Report

________________________________________________________

The first Irish American Football League season took place in 1986. By 2000 nearly all the teams had dropped out and there was no league that year.

In 2001 a new organisation, the Irish American Football Association, led by Cillian Smith, took over the running of the sport. A winter league was started in 2001 with four teams – Dublin Rebels, UL Vikings, Carrickfergus Knights and Dublin Dragons. The Dublin Rebels beat the Knights 28-7 in Shamrock Bowl XV after they both finished the season 5-1.

The 2002 season saw the same four teams compete – with defending champions Dublin Rebels only winning one game, the Shamrock Bowl was played between Carrickfergus and UL Vikings. UL Vikings were without star American players who had guided their dominance of the regular season and they were defeated 66-0 in Shamrock Bowl XVI by the Knights.

In 2003 a new Division 2 was started, playing eight-man football for new teams, while the Cork Admirals would join Division 1. The Rebels won back the Shamrock Bowl, defeating the Knights 24-12.

The 2004 season saw the Division 2 merged with Division 1 into one Super League, bringing in the Belfast Bulls to bring the League up to 6 teams. The Dublin Rebels went 7-1 and again defeated the Knights in Shamrock Bowl XVIII 24-22.

The Belfast Bulls topped the League in 2005 on 7-1, but lost Shamrock Bowl XIX 26-19 to the Rebels, winning their fourth Bowl.

2006 saw an expansion of the League to eight teams as the Dublin City University Saints and North Dublin Marshals joined. Dublin Rebels would go undefeated, posting an 8-0 regular season record before thrashing Cork admirals 58-22 in the Semi-Finals and UL Vikings 44-12 in Shamrock Bowl XX.

Report

Cill Dara Crusaders Team Photo [6]

Cill Dara Crusaders, formed out of the merger of the North Kildare Reapers and South Kildare Soldiers finally won a Bowl game in 2019, defeating the Meath Bulldogs 32-26 in a close game, gaining revenge for their only defeat of the season, a heavy loss (12-33) against the same opposition at the end of May.

The two other Kildare teams dating back to 2012 (Reapers) and 2008 (Soldiers) had no luck in qualifying for the post-season with the Reapers failing to qualify for the Shamrock Bowl Conference Playoffs on a tie-breaker three seasons running.

The Crusaders had posted big wins over the NI Razorbacks and had close wins over the Antrim Jets, North Dublin Pirates and Causeway Giants as well as an away win over the Meath Bulldogs, meaning the teams were fairly level-pegged going into the Bowl, the Cill Dara Crusaders finishing the Regular Season on 7-1 and Meath Bulldogs 6-1-1.

Drimnagh Cycos won the first ever International Flag Football match played by either Irish or British teams. They scored two Rushing Touchdowns in the first half, one from Liam Farrell and the second from young QB Aiden Kelly before the Leicester defense tightened up and they got one back in the second half through Rich Manning scoring on a short pass from QB Chris Wild.

Note: The above Table is a composite table, adding the records of each of the teams for the four tournaments. No. = Number of Tournaments entered. Pct = Winning Percentage over entire season. Teams are Ranked by 1. Number of Wins. 2. Winning Percentage. 3. Number of Losses.

The Season was intended as a break from the League in order to grow the game – it seems to have worked – from 7 teams in the League in 2017 – there were 19 in 2018, and this year 25.

The Tournaments featured a European Team from a US Air Force Base in Germany – Kaiserslautern Screamin’ Eagles – making it an International Tournament Season like the Celtic Bowl of 2015. I was also Co-ed – men & women could both play.

Westmeath Minotaurs won the second Flag football tournament of the season in Maynooth, winning both group games and then defeating UCD in the final. After the group stage where each team played twice there was a straight final due to the fading light as the tournament was behind schedule. This left both the Dubliin Bay Raptors and South Dublin Panthers bitterly disappointed as they would be knocked out on points difference despite winning both of their group games like UCD and the Minotaurs.

The Final went into overtime with Westmeath emerging winners with a Niall King touchdown catch. Jack Lynch proved the standout on the day catching 7 TD passes as well as returning an interception for a touchdown.

Westmeath Minotaurs won their second straight Flag Bowl Tournament with a 20-13 victory over the Dublin Bay Raptors in the Final. Held in aid of the Simon Communities Charity for the Homeless, the Minotaurs won all five games, racking up 91 points in three group games behind QB Dermot Corroon
with Jack Lynch and Jason Owens on Offense and Chris Gilbert and David Walsh on Defense also having outstanding days.

The Dublin Bay Raptors won the other group in fine style also, winning all three games, and making sure to rack up the points also after the disappointment of the Maynooth Tournament, winning all three of their games like the Minotaurs.

After despatching the Panthers and Cowboys in the Semi-Finals, the Raptors and Minotaurs would meet undefeated in the Final, in what was a tense game. The Minotaurs would win their second Bowl in a row 20-13 after MVP Conor McGroarty of the Raptors was stopped yards from the line as time ran out.

Five teams entered the final Flag Football Tournament of the 2017-18 season which was held in University College Cork, including the Kaiserslautern Screamin’ Eagles, a team of American Military based in Germany.[19][20]

The Screamin Eagles and the Dublin Bay Raptors went through the group stage undefeated, with Kaiserslautern winning their games easily, and the Raptors matching them nearly all the way, with just the one tie against UCC Raiders, leaving them top of the scoring charts after the group stage. with Dublin Bay and the Screamin Eagles due to meet in the last group stage game and also both qualified for the Final, it was decided to to go straight to the Final, which was close all the way, the Raptors giving the Americans the toughest challenge they faced in the tournament. The Screamin Eagles would hold on for a 33-25 victory to win the Bowl, and consign the Raptors to their second straight Bowl defeat.[19][20][21][22]

Drimnagh Cycos 6 Leicester Europa Eagles 26

Drimnagh Cycos hosted the English Senior Flag League Champions Leicester Europa Eagles in Marlay Park, Dublin, for the 8th Anglo-Irish Flag Football Challenge. The Cycos defense intercepted Eagles QB Chris Wild on their first two drives, Liam Farrell and Aidan Kelly getting the picks. Defense dominated the early stages of this game as the Eagles got to the Cycos 1 yard line, only to fail to find a receiver on 4th down. [1]

Leicester’s James Hossack intercepted Aidan Kelly and the Eagles got the go-ahead touchdown on the following drive – riuunning back Ryan Melbourne sweeping down the right -hand side. Again the Cycos offense was stopped, and the Eagles went in 14-0 up at half-time after Chris Broughton found Hossack with an option pass. Chris Wild completed passes to Wide Receiver Tom Gill on both of these touchdowns to add extra points. [1]

To start the second half Broughton found Alastair Coulthurst with a short pass, which the Tight End took all the way into the endzone. Hossack got a second interception, and the ensuing drive saw him catch a Broughton Pass in the endzone to put Leicester 26-0 up. Drimnagh scored a consolatoiion TD after Steve Dunn weaved through the Leicester defense following a short pass from QB Aidan Kelly. [1]
