Factfile

IAFL Senior Team 1994-present

Home Ground: Woodburn RFC, Carrickfergus, Co. Antrim (1994-2017) / Shaw’s Bridge Sports Association, Belfast (2018-present)

Colours: Black & Yellow

History: Carrickfergus Knights were formed in 1994 out of the Prospect Pumas Junior Team. After losing the Shamrock Bowl in 1994 & 1995 they won at the third attempt in 1997, defeating the Dublin Bulls 21-0, and then repeated in 1998, winning 22-14 against the Dublin Tigers. After losing the 1999 Bowl Game 22-6 in a rematch with the Tigers, they again lost to Dublin opposition in the 2001 Bowl, 28-7 to the Rebels.

They won their third Shamrock Bowl in 2002, thrashing University of Limerick Vikings 66-0, before again losing to the Rebels 24-12 the following year, a disappointing result which was repeated in 2004, the Rebels winning a tight game 24-22. This was the end of their appearances in the Final, with the team losing its first playoff match on 8 of the next 12 seasons, before returning to the Shamrock Bowl in 2017, losing to the Dublin Rebels wherupon the decision was taken to move to Belfast in order to continue playing at the top level

The Knights have also played two games against Canadian opposition and finished third in the Charleroi Trophy in Belgium in 2003, defeating France’s Celtes de Mitry 22-8 after losing to Belgian hosts Charleroi Cougars 8-6.

NDMA Division 2 side Stoke Spitfires hosted the Four Nations Bowl, featuring top sides from England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. Glasgow Cyclones pulled out on the morning of the tournament, so what was originally meant to be Semi-Finals and Final was rearranged as a 3-team mini-league. [1]

Stoke Spitfires 20 Belfast Spartans 0 – Belfast Spartans were short a full squad due to players unable to travel, and were thus no match for NDMA Division 2 side and hosts Stoke. [1]

Cardiff Mets 13 Belfast Spartans 0 – Belfast Spartans were knocked out of the tournament by the Welsh NDMA Division 2 side, making the final match in effect the Bowl Game. [1]

Stoke Spitfires 13 Cardiff Mets 10 – Cardiff raced into a shock lead after an interception was returned 100 yards for a touchdown by Defensive Back Barrie Stevens. Stoke equalised just before halftime when two Americans, fullback Jeff Christmann and Tight End Bruce Crump connected on a 25 yard TD pass, with John Wyse kicking the extra-point. The fourth quarter saw Stoke take the lead after running Back Kevin Haughton ran in from four yards out, before the Mets scored two safeties to make it a close end to the game. [1]

Offensive MVP Award went to Kevin Haugghton of the Spitfires, while Barrie Stevens took the Defensive MVP honours. [1]
