Report

The Irish Flag Football League was established in 1991 by members of the Dublin Tornadoes as a way of growing the game and ran until 2000, playing games at Marlay Park, Fairview Park and Phoenix Park [1][2]. It played a 7-a-side version as opposed to the international standard 5-a-side version.[5]

The Dublin Tornadoes Flag team won the title for first two years, and then the Marlay Martyrs won in 1993-1994 and 1994-95 [3] .The Drimnagh Cycos won the fifth edition, before the Dublin Crows won in 1997. The Dublin Pirates would then win the last three titles from 1997-2000 [6][7]

1995-96 Final

Marlay Hellfire 6 Drimnagh Cycos 12 – Marlay Hellfire went into the Final as huge favourites after an undefeated 12-game season, and having only been beaten once in the Irish League over the previous two-and-a-half-years, however, the Drimnagh Cycos, after an 8-3 season, surprised them in a 12-6 victory. Every player played his part according to Drimnagh spokesman Liam Farrell. [2]

1996-97 Final

Drimnagh Cycos 23 Dublin Crows 25 – With bad weather conditions prevailing, the Dublin Crows built up a 25-0 half-time lead. With the change of ends in the second-half the Drimnagh Cycos came back into the match, however, the Crows held on for the win as time ran out, thanks to a tactical offense. [7]

1997-98 Final

Drimnagh Cycos 12 Dublin Pirates 18- Dublin Pirates won an encounter which was close the entire match. [7]

1998-99 Final

Dublin Pirates 14 Greystones Rebels 12 – The Dublin Pirates won a closely fought final.[8]

About

The Irish Flag Football League was set up in the Winter of 1991 by members of the Dublin Tornadoes American Football Team as a way of growing the game [3].

There was both a Winter League and Summer League, with teams based in Dublin & Wicklow.

It was administered by the Irish Council of American Football, which was the regional body for the Republic of Ireland, within the American Football Association of Ireland.

It disbanded after the 1999-2000 season, and was replaced by the Irish American Football Assovciation’s Flag Football programme, which featured Challenge games over the whole island. [see https://eirball.ie/2019/03/11/irish-american-football-association-flag-football-challenge-games-2001-02/ ]

Report

The Ballymena Wolfhounds made a round-trip of 800 miles to Yorkshire to play their only match of the season as they had no opposition in Ireland at this level. [1]

The Wildcats were bigger and more numeerous than the Wolfhounds, but the Irish lads held their own in the first quarter, with the score remaining 0-0 until mid-way through the second quarter when second string fullback Marty McConville broke free on a 48 yard run to open the scoring. The Extra point kick failed. [1]

The scoring didn’t end there for the first half as the Doncaster lads hit back with a 17 yard passing TD, but with one minute still on the clock in the first half the Wolfhounds executed a reverese to perfection, with lead blocks from Paul Martin and Brian Elliott helping Enda Casey on his way to a 66 yard rushing touchdown. The Wolfhounds incresed the lead to 14-6 when the extra-pont attempt was caught by Paul Martin from QB Paul Haddock. A further touchdown for the Wolfhounds was called back due to a clipping penalty, so the score remained 14-6 at half-time. [1]

The entire second half was one of the most dominating displays by a Wolfhounds team in its ten year history as the held the Wildcats to negative yardage. [1]

There was no scoring in the third quarter as both teams had touchdowns called back for penalties. [1]

Despite their tiredness they still managed to put more points on the board. Lineman Frank Casey tackled the Doncaster running-back in the endzone for a safety making it 16-6, and then Paul Haddock scored on a 28 yard QB keeper to finish off the scoring. [1]

The game ended 22-6 to Ballymena and was a fair reflection of their dominance. Marty McConville was named MVP for his magnificent performance on both sides of the ball. Rookie Paul Murphy desreves a Special Mention for Rushing 78 yards in his debut. [1]

Report

The first DV8 Development League was won by Cork Admirals 2nds, who beat Dublin Rebels 2nds 30-0 in the Final. from the on it was just a straight league with the title decided on points. Craigavon Cowboys won the League in 2009, and teams from Regional Leinster won the last three titles – Tullamore Phoenix in 2010 & 2011 and Drogheda Lightning in 2012.

About

The DV8 Development League was an 8-a-side fully kitted league and was set up in 2008 with two main aims: (1) To give teams in the Irish Regions a chance to play Competitive Football while building up their kit & player numbers and (2) to enable 2nds teams of bigger IAFL teams in the main league to field 2nds teams.

From 2008-2009 each team played a full schedule (6 games in 2008 & 8 games in 2009) and from 2010-2012 teams from the Irish Regions played a full schedule and 2nds teams played a half or three-quarter schedule.

In 2013 the League became a full 11-a-side second Division known as the IAFL 1 Conference. The DV8 format was kept for a third level over the Winter months of 2012-13 (playing in Blitzes) and following formation of the IAFL 2 Conference in 2014, the format was used for the Junior Kitted League.

Report

From the 1920s to the 1960s there were numerous rival leagues to the NFL, which were either Major League or a Minor League just below the level of the NFL.

The AFL was one such Major League rival, and the Boston Shamrocks catered for the large Irish-American market in that city. They won the league in 1936 over the Cleveland Rams in second, who the following year joined the NFL, eventually becoming the Los Angeles Rams.

The Shamrocks second season was not a successful as they posted only two wins, and the league folded at the end of the season.

Report

________________________________________________________

Report: Linda Holland was born in Cork before moving to Perth, Western Australia in 2009. She started playing American Football there and in 2013 when the Legends Football League came to Australia she jumped at the opportunity to play Professional American Football. Even though the League has garnered criticism for the tiny shorts and crop tops the players wear (at first they played in Lingerie but that was changed after sexism claims) Linda said it was an honour to represent her country, describing herself as “Irish by birth, Irish by grace of God”. [1] The Western Australia Angels reached the Final in 2013-14, losing 36-15 to NSW Surge.[8]
