Report

Six National Collegiate Athletic Association Division III Colleges travelled to Europe under the Global Football banner in 2019, as part of the 150th Anniversary of College Football (American Football).

Northern Ohio Polar Bears scraped a 9-7 win against German Football League team Allgau Comets from Kempten, while on the same weekend, Sewanee Tigers from Tennessee, who had played in Ireland, left from a visit to Greece to play Lazio Ducks in Rome, 60-16.

There were wins also for Muhlenberg Mules from Pennsylvania over Guelfi Firenze from Tuscany in Italy, and Luther College Norse from Illinois over Catalan side Uroloki. On 8 June 2019, Graz Giants, who have previously won the Eurobowl, Europe’s Super Bowl, registered a rare win for European teams over NCAA Colleges, with a 28-25 win against Elmhurst Bluejays of Illinois. Report

Calcio Storico Fioentino has been played in Florence, Tuscany since the Renaissance. The first organised match took place on February 17, 1530. It was revived in the 20th Century. first under the 1930s government of Mussolini, and then again after World War II in the Italian Republic. Earlier matches dating back to the 1400s mention games played in breaks between work by workers [Reference: 2-5]

The matches usually take place during the June Festival period, with four teams, Azzurri, Bianchi, Rossi and Verdi (Blues, Whites, Reds and Greens) representing the four quarters of the city of Florence. The match is played between 54 players – two teams of 27 – with teams reversing ends after each score. It is played on sand in the Plaza. There are usually a Semi-Finals and Final. Half Points are scored, and teams play in traditional dress.

Report

In the seven seasons the Pro 12 operated as a 12-team League, Irish Provinces dominated, winning four of the seven Championships. Leinster won the Championship in 2012-13 and 2013-14, Munster were Champions in 2010-11, and Connacht triumphed for the first time in 2015-16. Welsh sides Ospreys (based in Swansea) won in 2011-12, and Scarlets (based in Llanelli) won in 2016-17, with Glasgow Warriors winning it for Scotland in 2014-15.

The Pro 12, run by Celtic Rugby Ltd, became a 12-team League in 2010-11 with the admission of two Italian teams, with each team playing home & away for a 22-game season plus a Final Series featuring the Top 4. After one year where it continued to be known as the Magners League due to sponsorship reasons it changed its name to the Pro 12.

In addition the top teams qualified for the European Champions Cup alongside the Top French (Top 14) and English (Premiership) teams. After 2017, two South African Provinces, Southern Kings and Cheetahs were admitted, changing the name of the League to the Pro 14.

Report

Engelbert of Congo Kinshasa (now DR Congo) won the Confederation of African Football African Club Cup in 1968-69 in a remarkable manner. After surviving an early round due to their opponents, Africa Sport of Ivory Coast, fielding an ineligible player and therefore being disqualified, they went on to win the Final against Etoile Filante of Togo 6-4 on aggregate.

They looked home and dry after the first leg at home, but in the second leg, Etoile Filante pulled four back in the first half. Seemingly out for the count Engelbert picked themselves up for the second half, and scored a goal to make the Final score 1-4 on the day, and 6-4 on aggregate.

Report

It’s exciting times in Professional American Football, with the Rams and Chargers moving back to Los Angeles, the 49ers moving to Santa Clara (a suburb of San Jose), but keeping the name San Francisco, and Washington Redskins dropping their offensive nickname, which had long upset Native Americans.

Eirball takes another look at what almost all Irish fans of Professional American Football are looking forward too: The National Football League making a move overseas, to Europe and elsewhere. In this scenario, teams which have never settled in USA have moved to Europe, Canada, Mexico, Australia, Japan, and one team, the Kansas City Chiefs, has moved to Africa.

These teams have been replaced in their home cities by new teams with the same name in the Xtreme Football League, which has merged with the Canadian Football League and Liga Football Americano de Mexico, to form the Continental Football League. Teams not name after the city they reside in have been forced legally to take the name of the city, leaving teams like the San Francisco 49ers to also be resurrected in the new Continental Football League. This may not happen until 2050, but Eirball has set an optimistic target of 2033.
