Team Dream won the first Lingerie Bowl in 2004, and since then the Bowl (renamed the Legends Bowl in 2013) has been won by New York Euphoria, Los Angeles Temptation (three times), Chicago Bliss (four times) and Seattle Mist (three times). There were 16 Bowls in total, 13 of them played and three cancelled.

The Lingerie Bowl was conceived as a Rival to the NFL Super Bowl Half-Time Show which some fans had said was too boring and long. It was aired at the same time as the Super Bowl Half-Time Show on a Rival Network, and featured two teams of scantilly-clad Models & Actresses, representing New York Euphoria & Los Angeles Temptation. Team Dream won Lingerie Bowl I and New York Euphoria Lingerie Bowl II.

Lingerie Bowls IV-VI were cancelled, the first two due to failing to reach agreement with a TV Network, and VI due to a dispute with a local Nudist Resort near Tampa Bay, where it was due to be played.

The one-off Bowl became the Lingerie Football League in 2010, playing a full season, and featuring athletes ratherthan models and actresses. Los Angeles Temptation won Lingerie Bowls VII, VIII and IX, after which the League responded to claims of sexism and modified the kit the players wore to bicycle shorts and crop-tops, renaming the League the Legends Football League. Chicago Bliss won four of the next seven Legends Bowls, and Seattle Mist three before the League was cancelled after the 2019 season.

The Lingerie Bowl was first played in 2004 as a rival to the Super Bowl half-time show which was seen by many fans as two long and boring. It was aired on a rival TV network and featured two teams of scantily-clad Women. The Bowl eventually came a fully-fledged league in 2009. The owner of the League admitted it was aimed at beer-drinking college students and following claims of sexism the Lingerie was replaced by bicycle shorts and crop-tops, and the League renamed the Legends Football League. It is 7v7 American Football with very little in terms of protective clothing, and is similar in rules and play to Arena Indoor Football, played on a 50-yard field with two 8-yard endzones.

Report

The 2019 season in the Arena Football League was the last in this most successful independent alternative to the National Football League since the American Football League of 1960 to 1969. With only six teams in it’s last season, Albany Empire triumphed in the Arena Bowl XXXIII 45-27 over Philadelphia Soul. Its’ legacy is Arena Indoor Football Leagues all over the USA, as well as in Mexico, and copycat leagues such as the Legends Football League based on the same idea of a reduced numbers American Football League in an Indoor Arena.

Report

The Queens Football League is the first Women’s American Football League ever in the Netherlands. First played in 2017 between the Amsterdam Cats and Rotterdam Ravens, the Cats have won it twice, with Moenchengladbach Wolfpack of Germany triumphant in Queens Bowl III. For the first three seasons the League was a single game: the Queens Bowl, with a 5v5 Queens Bowl added in 2019, won by Rotterdam Ravens. For the 2020 it was planned to have a three-team, six-game league followed by Queens Bowl IV, but was cancelled after one game due to COVID-19 restrictions. [References: 2-6]

Report

In the opening Week in The Spring League 2020 in San Antonio Alphas lost 0-19 to Blues with QB Shea Patterson throwing for 3 TDs, two of which went to Jovon Durante Cinco. Aviators defeated Jousters 28-0 as DeShaun Amos twice intercepted the ball, returning one for a TD and QB McLeod Bethel-Thompson passed for 2 TDs. In the third game of the day, which was Nationally televised Generals triumphed 33-19 over Conquerors, with Bryan Scott throwing for 3 Tds in his first professional start, and the Generals defense recording 3 Interceptions.

In Week 2, the Aviators won in overtime against the Blues, 23-17, as Wide Receiver Matthew Sexton scored with a walk-off Punt Return in a game televised Nationally on FS1 (Fox Sports 1). The win moved the Aviators to 2-0 as the Blues fell to 1-1. QB JT Barret led the Alphas to their first win of the season as they beat the Conquerors 22-17, dropping the conquerors to 0-2. In the other game, Jousters Kicker Ricky Aguayo had a perfect 5/5 night as the Generals came from behind in the fourth quarter, allowing no Touchdowns in the game and forcing two turnovers in the fourth quarter, leading them to an 18-15 victory as they moved to 2-0 in the standings, and the Jousters dropped to 0-2.

In the third week the Conquerors shocked the Aviators with a 42-19 victory against the undefeated team, giving the Conquerors their first win of the season. The Jousters forfeited their match against the Alphas, due to COVID-19 testing and protocols, and also lack of practice. Alphas were awarded a 2-0 win as per league rules. Quarterback Bryan Scott, led the Generals to the only team undefeated on 3-0 with four Touchdowns and was matched by his own defence who contributed four interceptions as the Generals downed the Blues 42-28 to claim sole ownership of the top spot.

On 17 November 2020, The Spring League made the announcement to cancel the matches for Week 4 due to positive COVID-19 tests. The Championship Game was postponed until 15 December 2020 where the Generals totally dominated the Aviators winning 37-14, with QB Bryan Scott named MVP.

About

The Spring League is an Elite Developmental American Football League that played its 2020 Fall Season in the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.

Six teams were announced for The Spring League 2020 in San Antonio, the only 11v11 American Football League other than the National Football League to go ahead despite the COVID-19 Coronavirus Pandemic. Terry Shea, an Irish surname / family name, was named head coach of the Aviators, one of six teams, so possibly an Irish Connection there.

Report

Arena Football was invented by a former National Football League executive in 1982 after seeing an Indoor Soccer Game. In 1985 he left the NFL and played the first “Test Game” and the following year the first “Showcase Game”. In 1987 the Arena Football League started, which lasted until 2019. It spawned numerous copy leagues, some of which are still in existence today, such as the Indoor Football League. In 2004, a Rival TV Network, took advantage of fans describing the Super Bowl Halftime Show as too long and boring to air a match featuring scantily-clad models and actresses called the “Lingerie Bowl” at the same time. The game was a variation on Arena Football. In 2009 this Bowl became a fully-fledged league, which renamed itself the Legends Football League, and started playing in bicycle shorts and crop tops following complaints of sexism. Boty of these leagues had a Global adventure: the AFL established the China Arena Football League in 2016, which had its second season in 2019, and the LFL established the LFL Canada in 2012-13 and LFL Australia in 2013-14, both of which lasted one season. Irishwoman Linda Holland played for the Western Australia Angels in the LFL Autstralia.

About the American Football Ireland Intervarsity Championships

The Jordanstown Jaguars, based in Ulster University Jordanstown played in the first full season of the Irish American Football League in 1987. The Trinity Bowl, played from 1992-1995, was the first competition played in Irish Universities, although it did not involve College teams. The Irish Collegiate American Football Association was formed in 1993, and played a Flag Football Summer Bowl over the Summer Holidays, involving both College Students and non-College Students. From 1998 to 1999 the Queen’s University Belfast Broncos competed in the AFAI Irish Senior League, and in 1999 the University of Limerick Vikings were formed, initially as a Flag Football team, and then from 2001 onwards as a fully kitted team playing uin the resurrected IAFL.

The First Colleges and Universities Sports Association of Ireland (CUSAI) Kitted College Bowl was played in 2006, when there was more than one kitted College team for the first time, namely the University of Limerick Vikings and Dublin City University Saints. The College Championship became a three-team tournament involving the Trinity College Dublin Thunderbolts and the University College Dublin Sentinels in 2010 (DCU were no longer fielding a team). In 2014 the Irish American Football Association took over the running of the competition from CUSAI after the CUSAI became Student Sport Ireland and renamed the College Bowl the Intervarsity Championship.
