About:

The All-American football Conference of 1946-1949 was a successful rival to the NFL, so much so, that the two leagues agreed to merge in 1950, although in essence it was a takeover of the three most successful AAFC clubs by the NFL – San Francisco 49ers, Cleveland Browns & Baltimore Colts.

The League was won by the Cleveland Browns all four seasons – in 1946 they defeated New York Yankees 14-9, and in 1948 defeated the Buffalo Bills in the Championship game 49-7 before beating the San Francisco 49ers in the 1949 Championship Game 21-7

About

The AFL of 1944 was a Major League rival to the NFL on the West Coast that was one of the Leagues that took the AFL name from the 1920s to the 1940s. It challenged the other Major Pro League of the time – the Pacific Coast Pro Football League – for one season, and unlike the PCPFL till then was truly a West Coast league rather than a Californian League, including teams in Portland & Seattle.

The Hollywood Rangers won the title and played off against the PCPFL winners, the Saan Diego Bombers, for the Pacific Championship, which the Rangers won over two legs.

About

The Pacific Coast Pro Football League flourished during the Second World War as Soldiers based in California led to a boom in the game on the West Coast. Initially the League was vehicle for the Los Angeles Bulldogs and Hollywood Bears who won the first two titles and most games played involved one or other of these teams.

From 1942-1945 the League expanded and could be considered the Major League rival to the NFL during these years. The 1942 & 1943 title were won by the San Diego Bombers. In 1944 the Bombers won the League again and played the Hollywood Rangers, the winners of another League to call itself the AFL for the Pacific Championship. This AFL was the first truly Pacific Coast League as it included teams in Seatlle & Portland, and the Rangers won both legs of the Pacific Championship.

The AFL disbanded after one season and the 1945 PCPFL Championship was won by the Hollywood Bears. After the war the NFL’s Cleveland Rams relocated to Los Angeles, and the All-America Football Conference put the San Francisco 49ers (later to join the NFL) on the West Coast, and the PCPFL’s Major League status was gone.

The League soldiered on as a Minor League, adding teams in Tacoma, Hawaii, Salt Lake City and Sacramento, but was no longer important in the eyes of people on the West Coast and folded after the 1948 season. The Los Angeles Bulldogs and Hawaiian Warriors won the title during these these years.

Report

From the 1920s to the 1960s there were numerous rival leagues to the NFL, which were either Major League or a Minor League just below the level of the NFL.

The AFL was one such Major League rival, and the Boston Shamrocks catered for the large Irish-American market in that city. They won the league in 1936 over the Cleveland Rams in second, who the following year joined the NFL, eventually becoming the Los Angeles Rams.

The Shamrocks second season was not a successful as they posted only two wins, and the league folded at the end of the season.
