Scottish Flag Football Association Junior Finals 2001

Recap

Dundee Storm won the first two Scottish Flag Football Association Junior Bowl Tournaments in 2001, defeating Galloway in the West Coast Offense Bowl Final on 9 May, then hosts Coatbridge Colts by two points in the Capital Bowl in Edinburgh a week later. Coatbridge Colts got revenge in July with a 54-18 demolition of Dundee Storm in the Independence Bowl hosted by Dundee. The Final Bowl of the Season was the Tartan Bowl III in Inverness in August, won by Inverness Rockets with a 3-0 record.

Some of teams were travelling all weekend to get to the games and back, especially Scalloway Vikings from the Shetland Isles, who competed in the Capital Bowl in Coatbridge High School in Edinburgh.

The Finals Day in early October produced a thrilling Final with Galloway Eagles defeating Dundee Storm 46-37 to claim the SFFA Title. The Eagles had triumphed convincingly in the Semi-Finals 40-6 over Paisley Panthers the Grangemouth Broncos had defeated the Dundee Storm 55-26 to reach the Final where Galloway went “all the way” and took the Trophy.

About Grangemouth

Grangemouth is Scotland’s biggest port, having been founded as the finish point of the Clyde-Forth Canal. Located near Falkirk in East Scotland, it is famous also for the art-statues of the two Kelpies, mythological Horses which can take Human form from Celtic Folklore. The artist who created the two giant artworks at the entrance to thde Helix Park, however, took inspiration more from the two work horses which drew each canal boat. Scotland was colonised by Gaelic-speakers from Ireland in 500 AD, although Gaelic is now only widely spoken in the Highlands and Western Isles. [References: 7-9]

Report

Dundee Storm and East Kilbride Pirates both put their perfect records on the line in the Final of the first Scottish Claymores Flag Football Association Youth League for 14 to 18 year olds in Meadowbank Sports Club, Edinburgh on 20th October 1996. The Storm emerged victorious thanks to two unconverted touchdowns in the fourth quarter from Quarterback Adam Smith, which helped the Storm come back from 8-0 down to lead 18-8. East Kilbride’s Quarterback James Keogh (an Irish name) scored a late touchdown himself, but it was not enough for the Pirates as the Storm won 18-14 to take the title. Roddy Greig scored East Kilbride Pirates’ other touchdown in the first quarter, with 2 safety points their other score. Storm’s Wide Receiver Graeme Anderson had given them hope by scoring on a long pass for the best touchdown of the match in the third quarter.

Ireland’s Emmett Waldron, born in Cork played for the Scottish Claymores in the World League of American Football / National Football League Europe League from 1996 to 1999, and part of the role would have been helping out with the Youth Programme of the NFL, including the Scottish Claymores Flag Football Association Youth League.

Report

The Scottish Flag Football Association was an Independent Flag American Football Association, operating in Scotland from 2003 to 2007. It ran Leagues for Seniors, Youth, Juniors, and Cadets, and followed on from the Scottish Claymores Flag Football Leagues (NFL Europe).

The League Champions were Kirkcaldy Bulls (2003 to 2005), and then from 2006 to 2007 there was a separate North / East Conference (winners were again Kirkcaldy Bulls 2006 and 2007), and West / Central Conference (winners were Glasgow Hornets 2006 and Grangemouth Broncos 2007).

Report

The Thistle League was won by Dundee Whalers with a perfect 10-0 record, with Fife 49ners, Strathmore Scorpions and Ness Minsters finishing mid-table. Barrhead Redhawks and Capital Clansmen finished bottom, losing all games against the other teams, and only separated by the Redhawks forfeit win over the Clansmen (the other match between the clubs ended in a tie)

The League became the Caledonian American Football League in 1988, after Dundee Whalers and Fife 49ners moved the Budweiser League Division 1 (essentially a Promotion). The League, however, gained the Glasgow Diamonds, Forth Valley Generals and Inverclyde Comets. Another new side Strathclyde Sheriffs won the Regular Season with a perfect 10-0 record, meeting the Ness Monsters (Inverness) in the Final.

The League became part of the Combined Gridiron League in 1989, which was a league set up to unite all the different regional leagues below the Budweiser League.

About

The Thistle League and Caledonian American Football League were two related independent American Football Leagues in Scotland in the late 1980s. They were both essentially the fourth level of Scottish American Football, with the top teams competing in three levels of the Budweiser League, the main British League at the time.
