Report

Eoin Price of Westmeath led an Ireland comeback against Scotland in the 2nd Leg of the Hurling-Shinty International series in 2014. With Ireland 3-14 (23) points to 2-8 (14) down from the first leg, Price tallied 2-5 (11) points to lead Ireland to a 2-18 (24) to 0-8 (8) victory at Pairc Esler in Newry, Co. Down, which sealed a 38 to 31.

The important goal came in the 73rd minute of the 2nd leg, when ‘Bonnie’ Maher opened up the Scottish defense and created the chance for Price, who netted his second of the match.

About

The first Hurling-Shinty International Rules match was played back in 1897 in Glasgow between Cowal (Scotland) and Celtic (Dublin). [1]

There have been regular Internationals between Ireland and Scotland since 2000.

Shinty is very similar to Hurling and the two games would have the same Gaelic Celtic origin with Shinty most popular in Gaelic Scots part of Scotland, particularly the Highlands. The game, however, does not include over-the-bar points, only goals and there is less play in the air than in Hurling.

The scoring system is three points for a goal and one for a point (over-the-bar). In 2012 an experimental scoring system was used whereby a goal was worth 5 points. From 2000-2003 a scoring system was employed whereby a goal was worth 6 points, an ‘over’ 3 points, and a ‘behind’ (a score into posts either side of the two main posts) 1 point.

13-a-side or 14-a-side have both been employed, halfway between Hurling’s 15-a-side and Shinty’s 12-a-side. Bot teams play with their own sticks, so it is a game played with two different sets of equipment.

In 2010 the series became a home-and-away series with the aggregate score over two legs deciding the winners. During this period Ireland won from 2011-2014, though the series reverted to a single game in 2016

Report

The 2020 Baseball Ireland A League season was shortened to 9 weeks due to the COVID-19 virus outbreak, and did not start until the first week of August.

After 3 weeks of the 2020 Baseball Ireland season, Ashbourne Giants were in top spot, with three wins from three, having defeated all other teams: Mariners Baseball 14-12, Dublin City Hurricanes 13-11 and Dublin Spartans 22-14.

Mariners Baseball were in second having picked up wins in weeks 2 and 3 over Dublin Spartans (5-2) and Dublin City Hurricanes (15-14). Dublin Spartans had got off the mark for 2020 with a 9-5 defeat of Dublin City Hurricanes in week 3 in the battle of the two winless teams.

By the end of August Ashbourne Giants had finally been defeated in a shock loss to Mariners, leaving them on 5-1, with the Mariners a game behind. Dublin City Hurricanes meanwhile had picked up their first win, a shock 7-3 win against Mariners Baseball, and then followed it up with a second victory over Dublin Spartans to move into third on 2-4.

The Mariners won the League Pennant with a 12-4 victory in the last game over Ashbourne Giants A, finishing on 7-2 and 21 Points to the Giants’ 6-3 and 18 Points. The Dublin Spartans finished on 6 Points (2-6) and the Dublin City Hurricanes on 4 (2-5 with one forfeit).

The Final was split one win each, however Mariners A took the title having both scored more runs on aggregate in the Final (28-22) and having won the A League Pennant.

Semi-Finals, Saturday, 26 August 2004, Charleroi, Belgium

Dublin Rebels 8 Chevaliers d’Orleans 24 – The Dublin Rebels came into the game looking for a three-in-a-row in the Charleroi Trophy in Belgium, having won the Tournament in 2002 and 2003. Orleans got off to a flyer, scoring a 59 yard Touchdown Pass on their opening possession. The Rebels almost responded immediately but on their first drive fumbled the ball on the Chevaliers two yard line. A couple of plays later the Rebelsdefense almost tackled the Orleans Running Back in the end-zone for a safety but it was marked at the one yard line. The Knights (Chevaliers) scored a 34-yard TD shortly after haltime. In an attempt to get back into the game Rebels Quarterback fired off passes to Conor Ryan, Carl Faichney and Simon Mackey but to no avail. Later in the third quarter Orleans stretched their lead with a 43 yard TD Pass. The Rebels finally responded with a TD in the fourth quarter when Brian Dennehy ran in from 12 yards out, but it was too little too late, and the French side added a 50 yard Interception Return to book their place in the Final.
