46 Countries entered the Asia Qualifiers for the FIFA World Cup in Qatar 2022. In Irish interest in the Asia Zone (countries where Irish players play professionally), Australia lead at mid-August in Group A, Iran are in third place in Group C, 5 points behind Iraq, India are in fourth place in Group D, 10 points adrift of Qatar and 9 behind Oman, and Singapore are in third place in Group B, 2 points behind Uzbekistan. Brunei Darussalam were knocked out in the first round by Mongolia.

Six rounds of matches have been played of 10 rounds (8 games in total per team)

Ireland International Clare Shine, a native of Cork, played for Glasgow City FC, a cross-denominational Women’s Football Team in scotland, who will be competing in the UEFA Women’s Champions League Finals in Bilbao and San Sebastian in the Basque Country from the end of August to the beginning of September. She went missing in June of 2020, but thankfully hassince been found.

Manchester City FC were defeated 1-3 by Olympique Lyon in the Quarter-Finals of the UEFA Champions League in 2019-20. The Finals were held over 12 days in the Portuguese capital Lisbon, after the COVID-19 Coronavirus Epidemic cut short the season, meaning the elimination of the two legs that were to be played on separate weeks in the Quarter-Finals and Semi-Finals. The Final was played between Paris St. FGermain and Bayern Munich on the 23 August 2020, with the German team winning 1-0.

The Manchester City FC squad included EDS (Reserve Team) Goalkeeper from the Republic of Ireland, Gavin Bazunu.

Liverpool Fc won the FIFA Club World Cup in 2019, triumphing 1-0 over Brazil’s Flamengo in the Final. Other contestants included Monterrey of Mexico, Esperance of Tunisia, Al Hilal of Saudi Arabia, Hienghene of New Caledonia and the hosts Al Sadd Sports cClub of Doha in Qatar.

The Liverpool Squad included the Republic of Ireland’s Caoimhin Kellehar, the back-up Goalkeeper.

28 Countries were paired in two-leg single tie qualifiers in Round 1 of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 Africa Qualifiers. Mauritius lost 0-3 on Aggregate to Mozambique in what could be considered Irish interest. Of other Irish interest Ethiopia defeated Togo on away goals after a 1-1 tie, and Seychelles lost 0-10 to Rwanda over the two legs.

In all 54 countries are participating in Africa.

The qualifying draw for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 North, Central America & Caribbean Zone Qualifiers pitted Canada in Group B along with Suriname, Bermuda, Cayman Islands and Aruba. Cuba were drawn in Group C with Curacao, Guatemala, St. Vincent / Grenadines, and British Virgin Islands. In all there were 6 Groups of 5 in Round 1, with the top 5 countriesgiven a bye to Round 2 (Mexico, USA, Jamaica, Costa Rica and Honduras).
