William Wagner Trophy 2007

19 May 2007 – Postal Club Tallaght – Tallaght Outlaws 0 Claremont-McKenna (CMC) Stags 67

The Tallaght Outlaws were the first Irish Club to play a National Collegiate American Football Association Division III College, when they hosted the third Global Football match in Ireland, after two involving Team Ireland in 2004 and 2005. The Stags, from Claremont, 30 miles East of Los Angeles in the Pomona Valley, in the Foothills of San Gabriel Mountains, had played the Great Britain Bulldogs the previous year in California, and as expected were comfortable winners, although the Outlaws put up a batter-than-expected match to them.

The Stags were led by quarterback Aaron Gonzales on Offense, and scored a number of spectacular touchdowns, with Mike Hirokawa and D.J. Lillard scoring numerous touchdowns, and an 80-yard return by Ryan Larson. On defense, standouts were cornerback Dan Picciotto and defensive lineman Kevin Byram.

The Outlaws, however, put in a number of good individual performances. Dan Breslin got an interception, and put in the biggest hit of the day on his way to winning the MVP Award. James Hugges, Barry Bolton and Paul O’Toole all had good games for the Tallaght side. The biggest compliment of the day came from some of the Stags staff, who said the Outlaws performance was on a par with the Great Britain Bulldogs performance the previous Autumn in California. [Ref: 1-2]

The game was named in honour of William Wagner, a Stags player who had passed away a few months previously. Notable about the College is that Bono visited in October 2007. [Ref: 5]

29 July 2007 – University of Limerick Vikings 22 Cork Admirals 14

Seamus Hogan, who scored two touchdowns, won the Most Valuable Player Award in the Irish American Football League Shamrock Bowl XXI in 2007, as the University of Limerick Vikings beat the Cork Admirals 22-14 in a close Munster Derby.

Cork had a great start with kick returner David Barry returned the opening kickoff well into Limerick territory. They were stopped short of the goal-line, however, as were the Vikings on the next drive. On their next possession the Cork Admirals got into good field position following a 40 yard draw play by full back Alain Pezeron, leaving them on first and goal on the 3 yard line, which Keith O’Callaghan capitalized on with a 3-yard rushing touchdown for the first score of the game. Pezeron converted for two points.

The vikings got back into the game immediately, with Quarterback Chris Bassitt driving them downfield, helped by Running Backs Andrew Gordan and Seamus Hogan. Hogan got the equalizing touchdown, with a 5-yard run up the middle, converted for two points by Bassitt. The second quarter was scoreless as both defenses held the opposing offense, with good defensive plays by Vikings defenders Eoin O’Sullivan, Declan O’Donnell, Damien Laffan and Alan O’Carroll. The Admirals defensive line of Marcus Gates, Ross McCullough and Barry Rea forced a number of tackles for losses. The Vikings got the first turnover of the day with less than 5 minutes to go to halftime, when their defensive back intercepted the ball, however, they missed the resulting field goal, leaving the score 8-8 at half-time.

The first play from scrimmage of the second half yielded the second turnover of the day, as Admirals linebacker Martin Mulvey recovered a Vikings fumble to leave them in good field position on the Vikings 20-yard line. Shortly afterwards, the Admirals went 14-8 up as Quarterback David Lomansey connected with Wide Receiver Dominic MacHale for a 30-yard touchdown pass. Limerick then drove deep into Admirals territory, but a fierce goalmouth stand for the Cork side on their own 5-yard line prevented the Vikings from scoring. The Vikings defense, however, ensured their offense got another chance before the quarter was out, as they forced the Admirals to punt, giving the UL offense the ball at midfield. Through runs by Bassitt and Gordon they got to the 10-yard line, where Seamus Hogan scored his second running touchdown, on a draw play up the middle, pushing the ball over the goal-line as the Admirals defenders attempted to tackle him. The Single Point Kick conversion put the Vikings 15-14 up at the end of the third quarter.

Again the Vikings defense forced the Admirals to punt early in the fourth quarter, and in the ensuing drive, the Vikings went to the air with a long pass from Quarterback Bassitt to Wide Receiver Marc Ashworth, setting up MVP Seamus Hogan for his third touchdown of the day, as a he scored on a 5-yard sweep to the right. again the conversion kick was good to put the Vikings 22-14 up. The game was not over yet, however, and the Admirals drove to the Vikings two-yard line on the next drive. In the best defensive performance of the day, the Vikings held, the Admirals on all four downs, and the Vikings punted on their next possession having failed to run out the clock. The punt pinned the Cork side deep in their own territory, and while they picked up a couple of first downs, were stopped on fourth down with less than 30 seconds left. The Vikings could then celebrate their first ever Shamrock Bowl win. [Ref: 4]

Season Report

The Cork Admirals reached the Shamrock Bowl in 2007, losing to the University of Limerick Vikings 22-14. The season had started with wins over Belfast Bulls (13-6) and University of Limerick (30-0) before back-to-back defeats to Dublin Rebels (26-28) and the return game with the Vikings (20-36).

The Admirals regrouped after this, and won big against Tallaght Outlaws (30-0), Dublin City University Saints (64-0), Belfast Trojans (60-0) and Tallaght Outlaws (64-0), to leave them with a 6-2 Won-Loss Record, and a place in the Wild-Card Playoffs with the Belfast Trojans, where they won 30-0, before another close game with the Dublin Rebels in the Semi-Finals, which they won 8-6, letting in the first points in six games. Then followed the heartbreak of the Shamrock Bowl against the Vikings, with the two teams evenly matched over the season beforehand, the Vikings having the slight advantage of only one loss, and homefield advantage.

Report

The first International game played by the National Football League outside of Canada was in tokyo, Japan, in 1976, and this was followed by a match in Mexico City in 1978 (see National Football League Intercontinental 1972-1978 for more details).

Beginning with matches in London in 1986, the American Bowl was a preseason Bowl game played in International cities until 2005, when the focus became Regular Season matches Internationally.

In 1994 the first American Bowl matches were played in Mexico, with a Cowboy-theme for one of the sides in each of the six matches: Dallas Cowboys four times, Denver Broncos once and Indianapolis Colts once. The Cowboys lost the first three matches they played, to the Oilers, Chiefs and Patriots, before winning against the Oakland Raiders. Similarly, the Broncos lost their game, before the Colts won against the Steelers.

The first Regular Season match in Mexico was played in 2005.

Report

After the demise of the Pacific Coast Football League after one week in 1936, there was no League season on the West Coast from 1936-1937, with the Salinas Packers and Los Angeles Bulldogs playing an independent schedule.

The Los Angeles Bulldogs had scheduled games against National Football League teams the Philadelphia Eagles (winning 10-7) and Pittsburgh Pirates (winning 27-7).

The Packers played against the Brooklyn Dodgers of the NFL in 1936, losing 18-0 and also the Green Bay Packers (NFL Champions) who won 42-7, before losing to an NFL All-Star team in Bakersfield. [1]

The two teams also played each other, with the Salinas Packers winning 21-17, as well as scheduling matches against other West Coast and Inland Empire opposition.

Report

In the Winter of January-February 1927 & 1928, some of the top teams in the National Football League & American Football League played in a Winter League in California, following the end of the Fall (Autumn) NFL & AFL seasons. The teams included star players from college teams in California and were dubbed after the teams’ star NFL & AFL players. e.g. the Nevers Eskimoes were the Duluth Eskimoes of the NFL with star player, Ernie Nevers.

For the second year in a row the Duluth Eskimoes and New York Yankees ended their seasons by competing in a Winter League in California over January and February 1928. They were joined this time by the Cleveland Bulldogs.

There were no Pacific Coast Football League teams this year, however, the Duluth Eskimoes included many Californian College players on their roster, and were dubbed Nevers-Imlay Giants by the press (after their two star players – Ernie Nevers of the Eskimoes and Tut Imlay from the Californian Colleges). The Los Angeles Wildcats, previously of the American Football League, named Wilson’s Wildcats by the Press, made up the final team in the four team league.

The Wildcats won their opening two fixtures against the Yankees, before dropping a game to the Cleveland Bulldogs. Their fourth game, against the Duluth Giants was cancelled, and they tied their last game 0-0 with the Bulldogs.

The Yankees recovered from their defeats to the Wildcats to defeat the Bulldogs and tie with the Giants, and the Bulldogs had started their season with a win over the Giants and Wildcats, before losing to the Yankees and tying their last game.

Despite being the best team on the circuit for the second year in a row, the Los Angeles Wildcats were not invited to the season ending Finale, their place insted going to the Yankees as they were a better draw for the fans, even though they had lost both games to the LA team.

The Yankees made no mistake in their second California Winter League Finale, winning 13-6 against Friedmann’s Bulldogs.

The League was essentially a AAA League/Major League Rival to the NFL from 1927-1928, featuring both star NFL & AFL teamxs and players and teams and players from the Semi-Pro Pacific Coast Football League and Californian College players.
