Season Report

The University of Limerick Vikings repeated as Shamrock Bowl Champions, defeating the Dublin Rebels 14-12 with a last-minute blocked Field Goal at the Cork Institute of Technology, thus gaining revenge for defeat in Week 13, their only loss of the season.

The season opened with comfortable wins over the two Belfast sides and the Tallaght Outlaws before two games with the Cork Admirals, their Munster rivals giving them the closest test so far in 2008 by putting up 25 points against the Vikings in Cork, but the UL side managed their best offensive performance of the year by scoring 34.

They followed this by lighting up the scoreboard in an emphatic 92-0 win over Tallaght Outlaws, before crashing back down to earth with a heavy 32-14 loss to the Dublin Rebels, which proved to be their only loss of the season. The Vikings regrouped and won their next two games in style, including the Semi-Final over the IAFL North Division Champions, Belfast Trojans.

Having won the IAFL South Division, and dispatched the IAFL North Division Champions in the Semi-Finals, they then faced the IAFL Central Division Champions for the second time that season, in what was an extremely close Final. They Vikings led 14-3 at half-time thanks to a Rushing Touchdown from MVP Adrian Garvey and an Interception Return for Touchdown by Darragh O’Callaghan before a second-half comeback by the Rebels ended with the blocked Field Goal. IAFL 1 Bowl 2019 Logo [4]

Report

Craigavon Cowboys won the IAFL 1 Bowl at the third attempts 28-27 over the Westmeath Minotaurs. It was the Cowboys third IAFL 1 Bowl in-a-row, after losing to the Louth Mavericks in 2017 & West Dublin Rhinos in 2018. This was the Westmeath Minotaurs first ever appearance in a Bowl game.

The Cowboys had a tough start to the season, losing 2-14 to Trinity College Dublin in their opening game, before going on a 9-game winning streak to take the title. It was very close at the top of the table, with Craigavon Cowboys finishing on a 7-1 record, and Westmeath Minotaurs, Wexford Eagles and Trinity College Dublin all reaching the playoffs with 6-2 records.

The other end of the table saw Louth Mavericks, back in IAFL 1 after winning promotion to the Shamrock Bowl Conference in 2017 with their 1 Bowl victory in 2017, posting an even 4-4 record. Donegal / Derry Vipers, Galway Warriors and Waterford Wolves all struggled.

The Vipers only wins came in walkovers versus the other two teams who failed to finish the season. Waterford Wolves were back in the League after a two year absence and may have entered at a level too high for them.

The Bowl game, however, was extremely competitive, and could not have been closer with Craigavon edging it 28-27.

The game was closer than many had predicted with Belfast scoring early on a John Melville Touchdown, but good spoiling play by the Vikings meant two Field Goal attempts later on were no good for the Spartans.

Week 2 –  26 April 1992 – Trinity Bowl

Dublin Tornadoes 3 Antrim Bulldogs 0 – The Dublin Tornadoes snatched victory in the first ever American Football match played at Ireland’s hallowed Trinity College. They won with a Field Goal from Tony Fox in the last five seconds after Tony Degonia came on and started a move which pushed the Bulldogs back to their 10 yard line. Despite the low score it was an all action packed match, with both offenses moving the ball upfield and only tight defense preventing any break-through. This was a new-look Tornadoes with linebacker at the top of their game and Mark Nicholls, their Running-Back playing a superb game.

Report

________________________________________________________

The first Irish American Football League season took place in 1986. By 2000 nearly all the teams had dropped out and there was no league that year.

In 2001 a new organisation, the Irish American Football Association, led by Cillian Smith, took over the running of the sport. A winter league was started in 2001 with four teams – Dublin Rebels, UL Vikings, Carrickfergus Knights and Dublin Dragons. The Dublin Rebels beat the Knights 28-7 in Shamrock Bowl XV after they both finished the season 5-1.

The 2002 season saw the same four teams compete – with defending champions Dublin Rebels only winning one game, the Shamrock Bowl was played between Carrickfergus and UL Vikings. UL Vikings were without star American players who had guided their dominance of the regular season and they were defeated 66-0 in Shamrock Bowl XVI by the Knights.

In 2003 a new Division 2 was started, playing eight-man football for new teams, while the Cork Admirals would join Division 1. The Rebels won back the Shamrock Bowl, defeating the Knights 24-12.

The 2004 season saw the Division 2 merged with Division 1 into one Super League, bringing in the Belfast Bulls to bring the League up to 6 teams. The Dublin Rebels went 7-1 and again defeated the Knights in Shamrock Bowl XVIII 24-22.

The Belfast Bulls topped the League in 2005 on 7-1, but lost Shamrock Bowl XIX 26-19 to the Rebels, winning their fourth Bowl.

2006 saw an expansion of the League to eight teams as the Dublin City University Saints and North Dublin Marshals joined. Dublin Rebels would go undefeated, posting an 8-0 regular season record before thrashing Cork admirals 58-22 in the Semi-Finals and UL Vikings 44-12 in Shamrock Bowl XX.

Cill Dara Crusaders, formed out of the merger of the North Kildare Reapers and South Kildare Soldiers finally won a Bowl game in 2019, defeating the Meath Bulldogs 32-26 in a close game, gaining revenge for their only defeat of the season, a heavy loss (12-33) against the same opposition at the end of May.

The two other Kildare teams dating back to 2012 (Reapers) and 2008 (Soldiers) had no luck in qualifying for the post-season with the Reapers failing to qualify for the Shamrock Bowl Conference Playoffs on a tie-breaker three seasons running.

The Crusaders had posted big wins over the NI Razorbacks and had close wins over the Antrim Jets, North Dublin Pirates and Causeway Giants as well as an away win over the Meath Bulldogs, meaning the teams were fairly level-pegged going into the Bowl, the Cill Dara Crusaders finishing the Regular Season on 7-1 and Meath Bulldogs 6-1-1.

Shamrock Bowl XV

Carrickfergus Knights 7 Dublin Rebels 28 – The Carrickfergus Knights were appearing in their sixth Shamrock Bowl in seven seasons, and the Rebels, a merger of the Greystones Rebels and Dublin Tigers, were appearing in their first, although many, including Brian Dennehy saw Shamrock Bowl action in 1998 and 1999 for the Tigers.

The teams were evenly matched throughout the season, both finishing on 5-1 Won-Loss Records, with the Rebels giving up Home Field Advantage with a loss on the final day of the regular season to the Knights. The Shamrock Bowl, however, was to be a Rebel victory, as Running Back Brian Dennehy scored with a 90-yard Kickoff Return from the first whistle, and then ran in the two-point conversion. Carrickfergus didn’t get a hand on him until the one-yard line and never recovered.

Rebels Quarterback Paddy Blood played the game of his life, returning from injury. With the Dublin defense winning the ball back, he drove the offense the length of the field, sweeping behind the offensive line, and finishing with a 20-yard Touchdown pass to Paraic Reddington.

The Knights recovered their composure momemtarily, as they recovered the ball from a blocked punt and Quarterback Stephen McDowell drove to the 10-yard line, where he connected on an out pattern to Wide Receiver Ron Smyth to bring them back to within one touchdown. The Extra-Point Kick was successful, making the score 14-7.

That was as close as the Knights would get for the rest of the afternoon, as the momentum was still with the Rebels. They scored again just before halftime on a half back option, as Dennehy connected with Wide Receiver Brian Martin for a 30-yard touchdown. Paddy Blood then hooked up with Dennehy for the two-point conversion.

Both teams stepped up on defense, as the Rebels hung on, comfortable and composed but not complacent. Michael Finucane and Steve Porteous were punishing Carrickfergus from the Defensive Line, and the Knights defense, playing tight as a unit, managed to halt the Rebels offense.

The Knights decided to switch to an aerial attack for the remainder of the game in the third quarter, and completed passes to Smyth and Paul McKillop. Two goal-line stands by the Rebels, with Free Safety Marcus Naylor making a crucial acrobatic tackle kept the Knights out in what was a nail-biting time for the Rebels.

The game was sealed late in the third quarter as Dennehy kept the ball for most of a 70-yard drive that culminated in him seeping in from two-yards out, making the score 28-7. That was the way the score stayed throughout the fourth quarter, as the Rebels celebrated their first Shamrock Bowl win, in a game which bode well for the future of Irish American Football, in its first season since 1999, and with a new Spring League just around the corner in 2002.
