History: Irish National American Football Team, started in 1995 as the Irish Leprechauns and playing friendlies and in the Nations Cup with England, Scotland and Wales. A match versus Mount St. Joseph’s High School from Baltimore in Maryland in 2000 led to the resurrection of the Irish American Football League which had disbanded in disarray earlier that year. The Team Ireland Programme played a further four games in 2004-2006 against English and American College Opposition before being put on hiatus. It was started again in 2016 with a Full International against the Dutch Lions. The Irish Wolfhounds, as the team has been Christened, has won its last two Full Internationals by a point both times against the Belgian Barbarians.

Report

The first Ireland National American Football Team was the IAFL All-Stars, a team made up of the top players in the Irish American Football League in the mid-to-late 1980s. In 1990s the first Irish Squad, of Irish-born players, and players with Irish Passports (Grandparents Rule), played a match against Dublin Tornadoes, winning 31-15. In 1991 the team lost 6-48 to the Northants Storm, one of the top UK sides. Then in 1994 a combined Ireland / Le Mans Caimans team lost to Team Canada 7-27 in France.

In 1995 the Fighting Irish team was assembled from Tryouts in Dublin, Belfast and Northamptonshire (England), and played its first full international against the Great Britain Lions, losing 22-0. Over the following year the team went 3-4, with wins over the Ottawa Gee-Gees Alumni (a team of former Canadian College players), The North West GB All-Stars and the Northants Storm, one of the United Kingdom’s best teams. The Fighting Irish also lost to the Gee-Gees, Team USA, and the Hanau Hawks, Germany’s National Champion, one of over 80 teams in Germany.

From 1996 to 1999 the Irish Leprechauns competed in the Nations Cup against the Scottish Bravehearts, Welsh Dragons and England, winning two matches against the Welsh Dragons.

In 2000, the only match played in Ireland was one between the Ireland team and a High School from Baltimore, Maryland (Mount St. Joesph’s High School). The match led to the resurrection of the Irish American Football League.

From 2004 to 2006 team Ireland played in the Celtic Classic against two United States College teams from the NCAA Division III level, as well as a match against the Coventry Jets, one of the top teams in Europe, and UK Champions. The team also played a friendly against the Great Britain Bulldogs. while Team Ireland lost all matches they showed great promise.

That promise was to unfold a decade later, when the Ireland National Team was restarted, with the Irish Wolfhounds, as they were named, going down to the Dutch Lions and Team USA American Football World (an elite High School National Team) and beating the Belgian Barbarians by a point, not once, but twice.

There has also been a couple of IAFL North and South All-Stars matches. In 1988 the Northern Hordes, made up of IAFL teams in Northern Ireland played the Dublin Celts in the Summer Bowl, and in 1995 in Co. Wicklow, a Dublin / IAFL South All-Stars team played the Great Britain Bulldogs, a British University National team. In 2003 the IAFL North and IAFL South All-Stars played each other in a game the North won 7-0.

Report

In 1983 two teams played an American Football match in Banbridge Rugby Club. The Redskins and Yankees were Rugby Union players specially trained for the occasion, it was not, however until 1985 that the Irish American Football League really got started. [Reference: 10]

The first contact / kitted Irish American Football Team was the Dublin Celts, formed in 1985 in the Phoenix Park, after playing matches for the first season against English teams there were enough teams in Ireland in 1986 for an informal league at the end of which the top two were invited to play in Shamrock Bowl I, which the Craigavon Cowboys won 6-0 over the Celts. The Belfast Blitzers declined to take part in the first Shamrock Bowl as they considered themselves already Champions having won both the League and Cup. [Reference: 11-12]

The Following year, 1987, saw the first full season, 11 teams organised into two conferences, playing a 10 game season, with Semi-Finals and the Shamrock Bowl. The Celts went through the season undefeated, beating the Cowboys 43-25 in Shamrock Bowl II.

1988 saw a drop in the number of teams to seven, and again the league was divided into two conferences, with Semi-Finals and a Shamrock Bowl, which was won by the Celts again, 34-6 over the Belfast Blitzers.

In 1989 the teams played in an Irish Conference in the Combined Gridiron League, which was a league set up to unite all the various competing leagues in England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. At the end of the season, as well as competing in the CGL playoffs, the two division winners, the Dublin Celts and new team, the A26 Bulldogs, met in Shamrock Bowl IV, which the Celts again won by the slimmest of margins, 7-6.

It was around this time that a new organisation – the American Football association of Ireland took over the running of the sport.

History

_____________________________________________________________

Following on from the successful introduction of the IAFL-1 Conference in 2013, the IAFL-2 Conference was added by the Irish American Football Association as a third level in 2014 for newer clubs entering the sport to gain experience before moving on to the IAFL-1 Conference.

Tyrone Titans would win the first IAFL-2 Bowl, defeating Dundalk Mavericks 20-7, and there would be another Northern winner the following year when Belfast trojans 2nds team won 48-0 against South Kildare Soldiers. Donegal Derry Vipers would make it three-in-a-row for Ulster sides in 2016 when they defeated Wexford Eagles 33-29 in a clash of the only undefeated teams in the division [7] . Meath Bulldogs would end the dominance of Ulster teams in 2017, defeating Antrim Jets 40-0 [10] .

The division would be merged with IAFL-1 for the 2018 season.

History

____________________________________________________________

The IAFL-1 Conference was created as a second level in 2013, following on from the successful introduction of the 8-man Development League in 2008. It was decided for the 2013 season that teams in the Development League were ready for full 11-a-side football. The first IAFL-1 Bowl was played the following year.

North Kildare reapers won the first title in 2013 on head-to-head over Dublin Dragons and Waterford Wolves [2] . All three were promoted to the Shamrock Bowl Conference for the following year. The First IAFL-1 Bowl was held in 2014 between UCD and Cork Admirals who had been demoted from the Shamrock Bowl Conference the previous year for forfeiting fixtures. UCD won the encounter handsomely by a score of 40-0 [3]. The Cork Admirals would be on the losing side again in 2015, going down 13-12 to Waterford Wolves in an all-Munster Bowl.[4]

Cork finally got their hands on the trophy in 2016, and automatic promotion, defeating the Belfast Trojans second team 38-7 [8] . In 2017 the Louth Mavericks won the Bowl and the coveted place in the Shamrock Bowl Conference, defeating Craigavon Cowboys 23-18.[12]

For the 2018 season IAFL1 & IAFL 2 were merged, creating an 11-team IAFL 1. Donegal Derry Vipers won the Northern Division, and Wexford Eagles the Southern Division, however, it was West Dublin Rhinos, one of the older teams in Ireland, who won the Bowl, 16-14 over one of the first teams to be formeed, the Craigavon Cowboys.[13][14]

IAFL Shamrock Bowl Conference 2019 [Reference: 20]

The Irish American Football League played its first Shamrock Bowl in 1986, and by 2013 there were enough teams playing 11-man contact football to necessitate a Second Tier – the IAFL-1 Conference, with the Top Tier named the Shamrock Bowl conference.

The SBC North Division in 2013 was won by Belfast Trojans on a perfect 8-0 record, and they would meet SBC North runners-up  Dublin Rebels in Shamrock Bowl XVII after the Rebels had beaten SBC South Champions UL Vikings in the Playoffs. The Trojans would win their second Bowl thrashing the Dublin Rebels 48-18.

In 2014 the Cork Admirals and University College Dublin were relegated for failing to complete fixtures in 2013, and the North Kildare Reapers, Waterford Wolves and Dublin Dragons would be promoted. Belfast Trojans, SBC North Champions would meet SBC South Champions Trinity College Dublin in the Shamrock Bowl, defeating the previously undefeated Trinity College side 7-0 in a game that was played in torrential rain.

The 2015 season would feature the return of UCD to the top ranks as well as the South Dublin Panthers (a reformed Dublin Dragons), while the Waterford Wolves had been relegated. Again Belfast Trojans and TCD would win their Divisions and meet in the Shamrock Bowl, where the Trojans completed a perfect season, winning 28-14.

The West Dublin Rhinos would drop down to the IAFL-1 for 2016, as the Rebels won back the title, defeating the Belfast Trojans 28-14 and ending the Trojans Bowl-winning streak at four.

The Cork Admirals would make a return to the SBC in 2017 replacing the Craigavon Cowboys who were relegated, as the Carrickfergus Knights won the SBC North Division title, appearing in their first Shamrock Bowl since 2004, but were unable to dethrone the repeating Dublin Rebels, who beat them 12-6 in a close encounter.

The Louth Mavericks would win the IAFL-1 Bowl in 2017 thus gaining promotion, while the North Kildare Reapers would merge with the South Kildare Soldiers, creating the Cill Dara Crusaders who would play in the IAFL-1 in 2018.

Report

The Trim Bulldogs were set up by Californian Garland Drake in Trim, Co. Meath in september 2010 and entered the DV8 Development League in 2011.

The Trim Bulldogs had a difficult year in the DV8 Development League, losing all their matches heavily. The League was an 8-a-side League and was set up with two aims – Allowing teams which have been newly set up and building their player/equipment levels to play kitted American Football, and to enable larger IAFL teams to field 2nd teams.

The Bulldogs managed one Touchdown, however, against Drogheda Lightning. They also played matches against other Regional Leinster team, Tullamore Phoenix, as well as games against 2nds teams of more established IAFL teams Dublin Dragons and Craigavon Cowboys.

Report

The University of Limerick Vikings raced out of the blocks in 2011, defeating the Dublin Rebels in a close game as well as crushing UCD, Cork Admirals & Carrickfergus Knights in big wins of close to 40+ points or more. A series of walkovers against IAFL South rivals then ensued which left them in a state of match rustiness for the playoffs where they eventually lost by a point to the Dublin Rebels.

Belfast Trojans Shamrock Bowl XXXIII Winners

Report

The Belfast Trojans won their fifth Shamrock Bowl 24-10 over surprise-packet South Dublin Panthers, who were appearing in their first Shamrock Bowl.

The Trojans had finished second in League play, only losing to the Cork Admirals, who had only drawn one game, winning all the rest before their shock defeat to the Panthers in the Semi-Finals. University College Dublin also qualified for the Semi-Finals with a 5-2-1 record.

At the other end of the table the University of Limerick Vikings, Dublin Rebels and Belfast Knights struggled by their usually high standards, and ended up with losing records along with West Dublin Rhinos. Belfast Knights appear to have suffered a dip in form since moving from Carrickfergus, and are looking at relegation following a bottom-of-the-table finish.

The season belonged to the Belfast Trojans, however, and surprise package South Dublin Panthers, who could be pleased with their best ever showing. The Belfast Trojans scored immediately in the Shamrock Bowl, Tom Morris returning the opening kickoff 100 yards to the endzone. They added another Touchdown from Jona Siri and a Field Goal from Ben sloan to take what seemed like an unassailable lead into halftime as the Panthers failed to get going. They came out fighting in the second half with a Touchdown of their own and a huge 49-yard Field Goal from Keith Lally to make it a one score game, but the Trojans held on and put the game out of reach in the fourth quarter with Quarterback James McKelvey scoring on one of his trademark QB sneaks.
