Week 1 – 14 November 1942 – Hale 9 Yarvard 7

The Hale Blue Devils went in front in the first quarter with a touchdown run by the small Sergeant Raymond Chandler. The Yarvard Crimson Tide had a good back themselves in Corporal Robert Hopfer, who ran nearly every possesion for them until he was taken out of the game by a hard tackle. Hopfer equalised for Yarvard and Corporal Jay Wright kicked the conversion to give them a 7-6 lead at halftime. [Reference: 9]

The Hale team changed tactics in the third quarter to a passing game, with Quarterback David Zywicki completing passes to Carpenter, halfback John Urban, and Edmund Forzcek, to set up Carpenter’s 18 yard Field Goal to put the Blue Devils 9-7 up. Yarvard also went to a passing game, but their receivers found Private Armando Lopez guiding missiles that were too hot to handle, and the game ended 9-7 to Hale. [Reference: 9]

About

During World War II, American Soldiers based in Northern Ireland, England & Wales, played a series of matches for the European Theater of Operations Football Championship. These American Football matches were sometimes played in front of the Irish & British public at large stadiums in aid of the Red Cross. [Reference: 11] The match at Ravenhill, on 14 November 1942, was the first ever match of American Football in Ireland [1-5]

The first such match, held at Ravenhill on 14th November 1942 (the first ETO Championship was played in Northern Ireland in 1942), featured the Hale Blue Devils and Yarvard Crimson Tide. [Reference: 9]

The names Hale & Yarvard aren’t mis-spellings. The teams were made up of Soldiers stationed in Northern Ireland during World War II, and the British & Irish public would have been familiar with newspaper reports of the time on the big American College Football games, so the names Yarvard, Hale and Tech (the third team in the ETO Championship in 1942), were chosen to reflect this. There was no separating the teams in a defensive struggle with neither offense being able to move the ball upfield. The Dragons scored first with their new run-oriented offense, John Durrad scoring from 7 yards out as time elapsed at the end of the first quarter. There was no scoring for nearly all of the rest of the game, but just as it looked like the Dragons would win, the Vikings put together one last drive, with Chris Bassett scoring from one yard to level the scores with two minutes remaining

Week 6 – 23 April 2006 – Dublin Dragons 6 Cork Admirals 6

The Dragons managed a second 6-6 tie in as many games with a Cork Admirals team they had lost 54-0 to in their last meeting. The new-look Dragons Offense used a Wing-T formation which protects the ball carrier as he runs down the middle, which no Irish team had used of seen before. They only tried four passing plays, two of which succeeded, and which ended with QB John Durrad being hit hard. Both scores came in the second quarter, Diarmuid Noyes scoring on a short run to give the Dragons the lead, and Cork replying with an immediate 65-yard TD run from Running Back Keith O’Callaghan. The Admirals forced two turnovers in the second half giving their offense good field position, however, the first attempt ended in a blocked Field Goal and the second was turned over on downs after a penalty out.

Week 11 – 11 June 2016 – Belfast Bulls 32 Dublin Dragons 6

Mike Calo’s stellar performance, passing for four touchdowns, and running in one himself poved the difference in this match on a hot day in Belfast. The first quarter was a defensive struggle as both teams tried to grind it out in 30 degree plus temperatures. A 23 yard pass from Mike Calo to Bjorn Blythe, deep in the endzone, gave the Bulls the lead following the Dragons failed attempt at a punt. The Bulls the scored on their next two possessions, as their offense got into gear, strong running by Gareth Millar setting up QB Mike Calo for a 13 yard run for a touchdown. On their next possession, Calo connected with Millar on a swing pass who ran in from 6 yards out. This left the Belfast team 18-0 up at the half. The Dragons offense got going in the third quarter, as Dave Wheeler got the ball into the endzone with a 9 yard run. The Bulls defensive line started dominating proceedings after this as Conor Leckey marshalled the defense. The star of the fourth quarter was  Nick Crawford who scored two TD receptions, the first a 60 yard pass from QB Mike Calo where Crawford out ran the defense to score. The Bulls ran out 32-6 winners.

Week 14 – 2 July 2006 – DCU Saints 8 Dublin Dragons 25

The Dublin Dragons kept their hopes of a Playoff spot alive with a 25-8 victory in North Dublin against the DCU Saints. Rookies had a big impact on the game, scoring 3 of the four touchdowns. The opening drive, which lasted half the quarter, ended in 25 yard Field Goal from Sean Power to give the Dragons the lead. The Saints punted on their next possession, but then linebacker Cathal O’Callaghan recovered a fumble to give them the ball back in good field position. The Dragons defense, however, held firm. The Saints defense stopped the Dragons halfway back in their own half, and then their Special Teams got the ball on the 2 yard line after the Dragons failed to get the punt off. Sean Whelan scored on the resulting run, which was converted by Shane Maguire to put DCU 8-3 up. The Dragons immediately responded, however, with a couple of long runs setting up Lez Connolly for the run on the one yard line. Karl Byrne scored the two point conversion. Sean Power extended the lead for the West Dublin team, as he broke free for an 80 yard run just before the two minute warning, leaving thre Dragons 17-8 up at the half. The second half saw great defensive plays by both teams, the highlight being an interception by Dave wheeler of the Dragons in full sprint, who returned it into the Saints half. The dragons capitalised on this when Barry Reynolds caught a 32 yard TD pass from QB John Durrad. The Dragons concentrated on controlling the clock after this, and their defense, in particular, Wheeler, Noyes and Newby, having a great fourth quarter to give the Dragons a 25-8 win.

Week 16 – 16 July 2006 – Dublin Dragons 12 Dublin Revels 46

The Dublin Rebels finished the season 8-0 after beating the Dublin Dragons 46-12 at Santry. Defense had a big impact on the game with four interceptions, two of which were returned for touchdowns. The Dragons defense were the first on the scoreboard when linebacker Nick Newby intercepted the ball at the Rebels 22 yard line and returned it to the 10. Barry Reynolds ran the ball in giving the Dragons the lead after 3 minutes. After roating the backfield, the Rebels got into scoring position with a first and goal, which rookie Chris Winton converted, leaving the teams tied. Sam Hodgins broke free for a 60 yard run on the next Rebels possession to give them the lead. Steve Archibald caught a crucial interception in the second quarter which gave the Rebels good field position. Sam Hodgins added his second rushing TD, with a short yardage effort which Simon Mackey again converted for twio points. Later in the quarter the Dragons defense scored their second TD of the game, Dave Wheeler returning an interception into the endzone to cut the defecit. The rebels scored again just as time expired in the first half as Carl Faichney caught a pass in the endzone to put the Rebels 32-12 up at the half. The second half was a defensive struggle with only one more offensive touchdown scored and yet another interception, this time Sean Shanahan returning one 29 yards in the endzone to effectively seal the game for the Rebels. The fourth quarter saw the only offensive touchdown of the half as Paul Smyth, lining up as a goaline offensive Tight End caught a short pass from QB Andrew Dennehy. The Rebels had one more scoring opportunity but were stripped of the ball by John Durrad on the 1 yard line, reclaiming possession in the process. The Rebels defense then held firm, giving them a 46-12 win.

Week 17 – 23 July 2006 – Carrickfergus Knights 13 Dublin Dragons 7

Carrickfergus Knights secured homefield advantage for the playoffs, and in the process, ended the Dublin Dragons playoff hopes, with a 13-7 win in Lucan, in what was a defensive struggle. In hot conditions, defense was on top in the first half with some fine displays from both sides. The Knights Ian McIlroy intercepted a pass in his own half, and the Dragons defense recovered a forced fumble, also in their own half.  In the third quarter, the Knights offense came out strong, putting together a 70 yard drive, mostly on the running of Darren Montgomery and David Wright. On third and goal Montgomery scored from the one yard line to give the Knights the lead, and Carrickfergus continued controlling the ball and the clock in the fourth quarter with David Wright running in from 12 yards out to double the lead. Scott Robinson had a crucial interception for the Knights in the fourth quarter. The Dragons, needing to win to stay in the playoff picture rallied their offense and Barry  Reynolds broke free to score a 51 yard run to give the some hope, but the onside kick was recovered by the Knights to effectively end the game at 13-7.

Report

The European Flag Football Junior Championship is the Under 13 and Under 15 Championship for the National Teams of Europe. All games were played in Rome’s Stadio Pasquale Giannattasio. It was Coed, both boys and girls played on the same teams.

Ireland entered the Under 13 Championship and reached the Final where they lost to the Netherlands 39-13.

They had earlier won their two opening games by big margins (32-14 against Austria and 49-19 against Germany) and beaten the Netherlands in a previous pool game.

It was the best showing by any Irish American Football International team ever to that point.

in 2012 Ireland failed to reproduce the form which saw them reach the U13 European Flag Football Junior Championship Final in 2010 as Netherlands repeated as victors. Ireland, however, did manage to win the Fair Play Trophy.

________________________________________________________

In 1997 Carrickfergus Knights would defeat new team Dublin Bulls, who were formed by Gateway Computers and had a very international feel to the team, 21-0 to win their first Shamrock Bowl.

The 1998 season would see the Dublin Bulls replaced by the Tigers and new teams enter – the Greystones Rebels (who would later become the Dublin Rebels) and Queens University Belfast Broncos. The Tigers and Carrickfergus Knights would both go through the season undefeated – tie-ing both games with each other and winning all the rest. They would meet in Shamrock Bowl XIII where they were only separated by one converted Touchdown – Carrickfergus Knights winning 22-14.

The Greystones Rebels would pull out of the League  in 1999, citing the politics in the game, and the League would drop to just 3 teams. The Shamrock Bowl would be won by the Dublin Tigers 22-6 over the Carrickfergus Knights.

The 2000 season was not played as a further two teams pulled out and a court case involving the AFAI and Cillian Smith and a number of other players resulted in a new body being formed – the Irish American Football Association – which would feature the Rebels and Carrickfergus Knights as well as two other teams starting the League over. Cillian Smith would guide the sport as Commissioner for the next 17 years to one with 20 teams and three levels of play.

The USAFE (United States Air Force in Europe) Football league title was won on 10 occasions by Rhein-Main Rockets (Continental Sports Conference), Weisbaden Flyers (CSC) six times, Upper Heyford Sky Kings (United Kingdom Sports Conference) five times , Bitburg Barons (CSC) five times, Ramstein Rams (CSC) four times, London Rockets (UKSC) three times, Lakenheath Eagles (UKSC) twice and SHAPE Indians (Paris, France Sports Conference) twice.

Bentwaters Phantoms (UKSC), Chicksands Fighting Chicks (UKSC), Furstenfeldbruck Eagles (CSC), Landstuhl Raiders (CSC), Toul Tigers (FSC), Weathersfield Raiders (UKSC) each won the title once.

There were four Sports Conferences: United Kingdom, Continental, France and Mediterranean, although in the end the France and Mediterranean Sports Conferences were merged with the Continental Conference.

About

The United States Air Force in Europe Football League (USAFE – pronounced “You-Safe”) was the League for Air Force Personnel stationed at Cold War Military Bases in Germany, the United Kingdom, France, Italy & Greece.

There were three Conferences: UK Sports Conference, Continental Sports Conference (German & France) and Mediterranean Sports Conference (Italy & Greece). While the MSC was a competitive Conference, the Finals were usually played between the Winners of the UKSC and the CSC.

Following the end of the Cold War in the early 1990s, the USAFE Football League was discontinued and the only US Military Football now played in the UK is High School Football at Lakenheath, London Central (High Wycombe), Alconbury & Menwith Hill. [1]

The United States ARmy EURope played a separate League (USAREUR). [6]

The Ramstein Rams, Alconbury Spartans, Burtonwood Bullets & Weathersfield Raiders all played matches in Ireland, including one at Croke Park in aid of the Irish Red Cross. [12-15]
