Kaatsen, or Frisian Handball is a Regional Variation of the sport of Handball in the Netherlands Minority-Language Region of Frisia.

About

Kaatsen is a Frisian version of Handball that was first codified in 1853 by the Franeker de P.C. oprichten (Permanente Commissie). On 7 June 1897 it became part of the Nederlands Kaats Bond and then in 1934 became independent again as the CFK, de Christelijke Friese Kaatsbond. In 1994 it again merged with thE KNKB. It is Primarily played in Franeker in Friesland.

From the KNKB Website:

“By bouncing (Kaatsen) is meant:
Two teams that fight each other by passing the ball to each other. This involves a storage party (service) and a returning party. In the scoring, 4 winning strokes yield a first / game (game) and in addition to direct winning strokes, there are undecided strokes (bounce = wooden marker), which later yield points after switching functions.

Frisian handball originated in the 12th century in cloisters in France and therefore found its way north via Belgium.
Bounce was first played on squares throughout the Netherlands by the ‘hegerein’ (well-to-do), only later on grass. When the nobles withdrew more to the tennis courts with their game, handball became a game for ‘the common people’.”

Hokkaido Adult American Football Association Hamanasu Tournament Bowl 2011-Present [Reference: 2-10]

Report

Sapporo Bekgals have won five Hamanasu Bowls in the last decade, and Sapporo North Cowboys one, although the last three Bowls have gone to Kulms Eagles.

The Hamanasu Tournament is a Spring Knockout Cup between the members of the Hokkaido Adult American Football Association in North Japan. With the exception of 2017 and 2019 when it was played as a 3-team two-match-per-team league it has been played on a Semi-Finals and Finals format over two weekends.

The Japan Private Football Association (JPFF) organizes the All Japan Championship for non-University and non-Social (ie. Business) teams in Japan. teams are clubs with no direct links to Businesses or Universities that compete for the Rice Bowl.

The JPFF is divided into an East Japan and West Japan Block, with the winners meeting in the Ocean Bowl, which has been won three times in the last four years by Urawa Urawazu (Urawa Ulowers), with Tachikawa Falcons winning in 2018-19. The winners on each of the past four occasions have been the JPFF East Champions.

North Japan’s Kizuna Bowl was won by Sapporo Bengals, representing Hokkaido, three years in a row from 2011 to 2013, after which it was won by Sendai Black Boltz, repfresenting Tohoku, who lost then lost four Kizuna Bowls in a row to Sapporo Bengals (2015), North Gamblers (2016) and Kulms Eagles (2017 and 2018) before again winning the Bowl in 2019 over Kulms Eagles.

Hokkaido University won the 1st Division League in the Hokkaido Student American Football association in 2019, and then went on to meet Tohoku University in the Pine Bowl (North Japan College Bowl) for the right to play in the East Representaive Final (Japan Semi-Final), but lost 9-34. Muroran Institute of Technology won Promotion from the 2nd Division League after defeating the last placed team of the 1st Division 28-10 in the Postseason Relegation Match.

The Potato Bowl was a Charity American Football All-Star game in Hokkaido, North Japan, which ran until its’ 45th year in 2018. The Workers All-Stars won the Bowl from 2013 to 2015, and the Student All-Stars from 2016 to 2018, with 2017 cancelled due to rain. There was a Curtain Raiser from 2013 to 2015 featuring a High School Game. The match was in aid of Physically Handicapped Children.

The Hokkaido American Football Association is one of 25 Local American Football Associations in 9 of Japan’s Districts and Areas. It forms a level below the Japan American Football Association which runs Collegiate and Social (Corporation) Leagues. The Hokkaido American Football Association runs the Hokkaido Student League, Hokkaido Workers League, Hokkaido High School Championship, and the Hokkaido Flag Football League. According to John Gunning of American Football International and the Japan Times Hokkaido is famous for its potatoes and Ireland and Hokkaido are the 20th and 21st biggest islands in the World. Four years in a row from 2016 to 2019 Kwansei Gakuin University represented West Japan in the Koshien Bowl, the Japan Universities Championship Game, winning on three occasions, all against Waseda University representing the East. On the other occassion in 2017, Nihon University salvaged some pride for the North / East Representatives with a 23-17 victory.

The Koshien Bowl is the Japan American Football Association’s University Championship Game. Played between the West Japan winners and the Champions of the East Japan Championship Game, the match not only decides the University Champion, but also who represents the Universities in the Rice Bowl – Japan’s Super Bowl – against the X-League (Social Champions).

The Tomodachi Bowl is a Japan-USA Frienship Bowl in American Football, with the 8th game played in 2019 at Atsugi US Military Base in Japan. A Kanto Selection (Team Rising Sun) beat Team USA in 2017 and 2018, but the US gained some pride in 2019 by winning 23-3. In 2020 the match was replaced by a Team Japan v The Spring League (USA) Selection.
