Report

The Baseball Ireland Irish Baseball League B-League was created in 2006 after the ten-team League was split halfway through the 2005 season into a Championship (Top Half) and Trophy (Bottom Half) sections.

The Trophy section became the B-League for 2006, with the teams made B Teams of the A League Teams.

The League in 2006 featured four teams – Dublin Spartans, Dublin Black Sox and Greystones Mariners B teams as well as the Wolves. The Spartans B won the League, going 9-0, but lost the B-League Final to the Black Sox B. [19]

In 2007, the Wolves were replaced by the Dublin City Hurricanes B Team, who won the League pennant only to lose to the Mariners B 11-10 in the Final, the second year running that the League Pennant winner had lost in the Final. [20]

The 2008 season saw the addition of the Cork Druids – the first team outside of the Dublin and Belfast Areas. They finished bottom of the League, which was again won by the Dublin City Hurricanes B, who won the Final against Greystones at this time of asking 3-2. [21]

In 2009, the Cork Druids were replaced by a combined Cork-Limerick team, the Munster Warriors, based in Limerick, who lit up the League in their debut season, winning the League Pennant with a Perfect 12-0 record. [22]

The Munster Warriors were promoted to the A-League for the 2010 season, and two new teams from the Irish Regions were added – the Cavan Comets from the Republic of Ireland part of Ulster and the West Clare Dolphins from Kilrush. The Hurricanes B won the Pennant and closed out the Final against the Greystones Mariners B in the third game of the best-of-three series. [23]

In 2011 the Dublin Black Sox B won their first title, with the Mariners B again the runners-up in a three-game series. The Hurricanes B had won the League Pennant but were unable to repeat. [3]

The 2012 season belonged to the Greystones Mariners B who won both the League Pennant and the Final – defeating Dublin City Hurricanes B 2-1 in the three-game series. [4]

The Belfast NorthStars added a B Team in 2013, and finished runners-up to the Hurricanes B in both the League Pennant and Final. [5]

Ashbourne Giants, formed out of a successful Little League Team in Co.Meath and the Dublin Tigers B – created by a Venezuelan Company operating in Ireland – entered the League in 2014, bringing the total number of teams up to an unprecedented 9 in the B-League. The Dublin City Hurricanes B proved the standout team, losing only one game all year, winning both the League Pennant and Final. [6]

The Dublin Tigers had pulled out of the League halfway through 2014, and West Clare Dolphins sat out the 2015 season, but the number of teams remained at 9 as the Belfast NorthStars split into three clubs – the NorthStars, Buccaneers and Hornets.

The League was split into a Northern and Southern Division with Belfast Hornets winning both the Northern Pennant and Final and the Hurricanes B winning the Southern Pennant, going a perfect 18-0 but losing to bogey team Dublin Spartans B in the Southern Final. The Dublin Spartans B won the B-League Final 15-4 in a single-game against the Hornets. [7][24]

The League remained at 9 teams for 2016 as the Hornets dropped out but the West Clare Dolphins returned. The Belfast NorthStars and Dublin City Hurricanes B both won their respective Division Pennants and Finals, before meeting in the B-League final, where the NorthStars swept the three-game series 2-0. [11][12][13][14][15][16][17][18]

The Dolphins dropped out of the League again in 2017, as did the Black Sox B, as the Ashbourne Giants investment in the International Baseball Centre – the first fully enclosed Baseball Diamond with seating in Ireland – paid off, with the team winning the League Pennant and defeated the Belfast Buccaneers 2-1 in the three-game Final. [9][10]

The Greystones Mariners B team won the League Title in 2018, posting a 15-3 Record [25] , but lost out to the Dublin City Hurricanes B in the Final, the Killer B’s completing an A & B League Final Double for the Hurricanes by sweeping the series 2-0 [26]

Mariners B won the 2019 Final 10-8 in the third game of a Best of 3 Series against Belfast North Stars. North Stars had taken it to a third game, by winning the second game 10-9, after a convincing 14-4 Mariners B win in the first game.

The 2020 season was shorrtened by half due to the COVID-19 Coronavirus Pandemic. Mariners B won the B-League South Conference and Ashbourne Giants U21 the B-League North Conference. The Giants U21 then defeated the Mariners B 13-5 in the B-League Final.

Report

The Irish Baseball League started in 1996. By 2006 there were enough teams to split the League into an A-League and B-League.

Dublin Spartans won the League Pennant in 2006 on a 12-3 record, and then defeated the Dublin Black Sox 3-0 and 15-8 to claim the A-League Title.

Dublin City Hurricanes would take the League Pennant in 2007, but fall short in the A-League Final, losing the series 2-1 to the Spartans, who would again win both the Pennant and A-League Final in 2008, with another victory over the Hurricanes.

In 2009, there would be more disappointment for the Hurricanes as for the second year in three they would win the League Pennant but lose the A-League Final to the Spartans. They following year the pattern would be repeated, with the Hurricanes again losing to the Spartans in the Final after winning the League Pennant.

For the third year in succession the Hurricanes would win the Pennant in 2011 only to lose the Final to the Spartans. This season would be specially bitter as they had gone a perfect 15-0 during the regular season.

The Spartans would win for the seventh time in a row in 2012, yet again after the Hurricanes had won the League Pennant. Following this disappointment the Hurricanes failed to win the Pennant in 2013 as the Spartans did the double. defeating the Black Sox in the Final.

In the 2014 season, the Spartans would fail to win the title after 8 in a row, as the Greystones Mariners came from nowhere with a winning run towards the end of the season to scrape into the playoffs and then defeat the Hurricanes in the Final. Yet again the Hurricanes experienced the bitter disappointment of losing a Final after a perfect 15-0 regular season.

A new dynasty would begin in 2015 as the Dublin City Hurricanes would make up for earlier disappointments by taking both the League Pennant and A-League Final, defeating the Greystones Mariners. They would repeat the feat in 2016, again beating the Mariners in the Final, and in 2017 would win the three-in-a-row over the Mariners. The Hurricanes defeated the Mariners in the Final for the fourth year in a row in 2018, after again taking the League Title.

Dublin City Hurricanes won the 2019 A League Final 2 games to 1 in the three game series with League Pennant winners Mariners. All three games were won by 9 or more runs, with Hurricanes winning the first 14-4, before Mariners levelled the series with a 19-11 victory. Hurricanes took the title with a 16-5 win in the deciding game.

The 2020 season was shortened by half due to the COVID-19 Coronavirus Pandemic. Mariners and Ashbourne Giants qualified for the A League Final, with Mariners triumphing.

Report

Irish American Football League teams played the first ever matches between Irish and American teams in 1986 and 1987. The matches were against Eastern Football League teams, a Semi-Pro League that still operates in the Massachusetts region.

The Irish teams were easily outclassed in what was a sport that was brand new to Ireland, losing heavily with not a single team scoring over the course of the five matches.

In 1986 the Marlboro Shamrocks defeated an IAFL All-All Star Team 36-0, and in 1987 in a pre-season game the Taunton Raiders, also from Massachusetts won 51-0 against the Dublin Celts. Later that year the Charletown Townies of Massachusetts toured Ireland beating Dublin Tornadoes, Craigavon Cowboys and Dublin Celts. In 1988 the Celts made a return visit to Massachusetts to play the Taunton Raiders, losing 50-0 at Middlesborough High School. [Reference: 1-6]

About

The Softball Ireland Brian Walshe Cup is the second tournament in Irish Slowpitch Softball after the Softball Ireland National Club Championship in the Order of Merit [Reference: 13].

It was previously known as the ISA Championship (Irish Softball Association 1990-1991) IBSA Cup Championship (1992-1996), IBSA 6:4 Cup (Irish Baseball and Softball Association) from 1997-1998, the IBSF Cup (Irish Baseball and Softball Federation) from 1999-2001, and the ISA Cup (Irish Softball Association 2001-2003). It then became the Softball Ireland Cup in 2004, before being renamed the Brian Walshe Cup in 2008

Brian Walshe

Brian first played Softball for the Oddsox in Tymon Park, Dublin 24, in 1991, at 15 years of age, accompanied by his dad, having being delighted to find out that Softball was played in Ireland. He asked all the right questions, and it wasn’t long before he was into the strategy of the game.

Soon he took up umpiring, and in 1993 moved from Oddsox Red to Oddsox Green, as there was a shortage of Pitchers. He excelled here, and found himself on the Ireland team, being the starting Pitcher for the National Team at the European Championships in 1998, 2000, and 2002.

He became Softball Director of the Irish Softball Association (2001-2002), and was ivolved in UCD Softball in a big way, as both Player and Coach. He passed away in 2003 just after taking up the role of managing the Irish Squad, still only 27. [Reference: 25]
