Report#

The 2020 American 7s Football League season, a no-pads full-tackle version of American Football, was played as a four-team four-week tournament in Yogi Berra Stadium in Montclair, New Jersey and televised by ELEVEN sports and For the Fans (FTF) Network, with additional broadcasting by Facebook Watch and Twitch.

Describing itself as the UFC of Football, the hard-hitting no-nonsense brand of Football culminated in the Back in Motion Championship Game (sponsored by Salus) in John Vianney High School Stadium with New Jersey Paterson University winning 49-7 against New Jersey Hawks. The season was late starting and shortened to four weeks with only four teams due to the COVID-19 Coronavirus Pandemic.

NCAA stands for National Collegiate Athletic Association

Report

The NCAA Football Championship Subdivision (originally Division 1AA) was introduced into American College Football in 1978, as the bigger Colleges (NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision) had become too competitive for the FCS Colleges. It is second-rank College Football, and third after NFL and NCAA FBS

There has been a number of dynasties, most notably North Dakota State which won the FCS Championship eight times in nine years from 2011 to 2019. Other dynasties have included Georgia Southern (six wins from eight championship appearances 1985 to 1990 and 1998 to 2000), Youngstown State (four wins from six appearances 1991 to 1999), and Appalachian State (three Championships in a row 2005 to 2007).

Report

The 2020 NCAA College Football season in the United States of America kicked off with on Thursday, the 3rd of September with Alabama-Birmingham (UAB) Blazers defeating Central Arkansas Bears 45-35 and South Alabama Jaguars winning 32-21 against Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles. The first big match-up on 7th of September featured Brigham Young (BYU) Cougars triumphing 55-3 over Navy Midshipmen.

By the first week in October the Notre Dame Fighting Irish were still undefeated, having won all three games, and were ranked 4th in the Nation. Ranked above them were Clemson (SEC, 1), Alabama (SEC, 2) and Georgia (SEC, 3), making Notre Dame the top-ranked team in the Atlantic Coast Conference and everywhere outside of the Southeastern Conference (SEC). The season, however, only featured half of the 10 Conferences, due to the COVID-19 Coronavirus Pandemic, with the other five cancelling their schedules.

Report

The 2020 National Football League season kicked off on 11th September 2020 with the Kansas City Chiefs defeating the Houston Texans 34-20 in a Thursday Night Game.

After 5 weeks the only undefeated teams were Buffalo Bills (4-0), Pittsburgh Steelers (4-0), Tennessee Titans (3-0) in the AFC and Green Bay Packers (4-0) and Seattle Seahawks (5-0) in the NFC. One game in week 4 and two in week 5 had to be postponed, including two Titans games, due to positives in the camps of a number of teams.

By the end of October (Week 7) Pittsburgh Steelers (6-0, AFC North) were the only undefeated team in the league. Kansas City Chiefs (6-1, AFC West), Tennessee Titans (5-1, AFC South) and Buffalo Bills (5-2, AFC East) were the Division leaders in the American Football Conference, while Philadelphia Eagles (2-4-1, NFC East), Tampa Bay Buccaneers (5-2, NFC South), Green Bay Packers (5-1-0, NFC North) and Seattle Seahawks (5-1-0, NFC West) were the leaders of the four National Football Conference Divisions.

By the end of November (Week 12), Pittsburgh Steelers (10-0, AFC North) were still undefeated, and defending Super Bowl Champions Kansas City Chiefs were leading the AFC West (10-1), with Buffalo Bills (8-3, AFC East) and Tennessee Titans (8-3, AFC South) still leading their divisions. In the NFC New York Giants had put together a three-game winning streak to lead the NFC East despite only being 4-7, while Green Bay Packers (8-3, NFC North), New Orleans Saints (9-2, NFC South) and Seattle Seahawks (7-3, NFC West) led their respective divisions.

By the end of the season in the first week of January the Steelers had dropped back to 12-4 but still won the AFC North with the Baltimore Ravens (11-5) making the Wild-Cards. Securing Home Field advantage for the playoffs in the AFC were the Kansas City Chiefs who won the AFC West with a 14-2 record, just ahead of AFC East Champions Buffalo Bills (13-3). The AFC South was won by Tennessee Titans on 11-5 in a tie-breaker with the Indianapolis Colts who were also made the playoffs. Cleveland Browns, also 11-5 reached the playoffs too despite finishing third in the AFC North.

The NFC saw Washington Football Team win their division, the NFC East with an historically bad 7-9 losing record. Home Field advantage for the playoffs went to Green Bay Packers (13-3, AFC North), and Seattle Seahawks (12-4, NFC West) and New Orleans Saints (12-4, NFC South) were the other Division Champions. Also making the playoffs in the NFC were Tampa Bay Buccaneers (11-5), Los Angeles Rams (10-6) and Chicago Bears (8-8).

The Wildcard Round saw Buffalo Bills, Baltimore Ravens and Cleveland Browns progress from the AFC and Los Angeles Rams, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and New Orleans Saints win through from the NFC. The Divisional Playoffs saw Buffalo Bills defeat Baltimore Ravens 17-5 and Kansas City Chiefs knock out Cleveland Browns 22-17 to make the AFC Championship which Kansas City won 38-24. The NFC Divisional Playoffs went to Green Bay Packers 32-18 against Los Angeles Rams and in the other game the Tampa Bay Buccaneers defeated New Orleans Saints 30-20. The Buccaneers reached the Super Bowl 31-26 in a close encounter with the Packers.

The Super Bowl itself was a showdown between Tom Brady’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Patrick Mahomes’ Kansas City Chiefs with the veteran Brady winning the contest 31-9 for the Buccaneers against the newcomer Patrick Mahomes. It was Brady’s seventh Super Bowl Ring (each Super Bowl winning team gets a jewel encrusted ring for each player), a record, higher than any team ever (Pittsburgh Steelers and San Francisco 49ers winning 6 each)

League Report

The second American Soccer League to take the name “Eastern Professional Soccer League”, the league arose out of a dispute between three clubs (New York Giants, Bethlehem Steel and Newark) and the American Soccer League I. The three clubs defied the ASL and entered the US Open Cup, and the ASL then banned them. The USFA (which ran the US Open Cup at the time) then responded by creating the EPSL, which added teams from the Southern New York State Association (SNYSA). The EPSL II played three seasons (Fall 1928, and Spring & Fall 1929) before merging with the ASL I after a peace deal to form the Atlantic Coast League.

At the time Soccer was the big Professional Sport in New Jersey, Pennsylvania and New England, with Professional American Football (the NFL) most popular in Ohio, Upstate New York, New York City and the Mid-West (Wisconsin, Chicago, Illinois, Michigan).

Irish Players

Bethlehem Steel included the Irish players Pitt, who joined from Newry Town, as well as McMeekim and Gibson. All three players joined Glentoran in Northern Ireland for the 1931-32 Irish Football League season. [Reference: 2]

Report

The College Football season in USA in 1904 was mainly fought by Eastern and Western Colleges (i.e. North East and Mid-West as it is today). The big colleges were still the Ivy League Colleges, with Princeton putting up a 6-0 record and Dartmouth 6-0-1 as per the results reported in the Sandusky Evening Star in Ohio.

Ohio was then the new hotbed of Pro Football in the Country, and while it could still not rival the big Eastern Colleges for drawing power or results, it is interesting to note that it formed a keystone of itself beyween the Big Eastern and Western (Mid-West) Colleges. The Evening Star thought it necessary to includethe results of the two big Indian (Native American) Colleges, Carlisle and Haskell, but the Pacific and Southern Colleges were rarely thought worth reporting on. West Virginia lost 130-0 to Michigan, but still beat Washington University 6-0, giving an indicatio of the relative strength of the Southern and Pacific Colleges.

Notre Dame, the Irish Catholic College in Indiana, managed a 2-2 Record,
