Adrian Young Report

Adrian Young, who was born in Dublin, played Linebacker for the Philadelphia Eagles from 1968 to 1972, when he was trade mid-season to the Detroit Lions. In 1973 he was traded again to the Chicago Bears, before finishing out his career at The Hawaiians of the World Football League, a AAA (2nd Level) Rival League to the National Football League from 1974 to 1975.

The National Football League had merged with the American Football League in 1970, after three years of playing the first Super Bowls between the two rival leagues. The Super Bowl continued to be played between the two Conferences, as the AFL and NFL were now known, and in 1970 was won by Baltimore Colts 16-13 over Dallas Cowboys. The 1971 title was won by Dallas Cowboys who defeated Miami Dolphins 24-3, and then the Dolphins completed a perfect season, going 14-0 during the Regular Season, before triumphing over Washington in the Super Bowl 14-7, thus becoming the only team in modern NFL history to go through a season undefeated. They repeated in 1973, beating Minnesota 24-7, before Pittsburgh Steelers, also won back-to-back Championships, winning their first Super Bowl in 1974 (16-6, Minnesota again the unlucky team), and in 1975 beating the Dallas Cowboys 21-17.

In 1976 the NFL expanded to 28 teams with the addition of the Seattle Seahawks, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, prving themselves ahead of their time with the two new teams, making up for what was seen as being too slow to take advantage of colour TV and America’s expansion westwards in the 1960s: The NFL shunned the National Broadcasting Corporation in the early 1960s, awarding TV contracts to stations that continued to broadcast in black and white, while the American Football League put 6 of its tams in new markets also shunned by the NFL: Dallas and Houston in Texas, Kansas City and Denver in the “Wild West” and Oakland and San Diego in Califonia. Prior to this the NFL only had teams west of the Mississippi in Los Angeles and San Francisco.

Fr. John Duggan Report

REPORT

Fr. John Duggan, born in Glenmore, Co. Kilkenny, Ireland and formerly of St. Kieran’s College in Kilkenny, went on study leave to the United States of America in 1972, where he came into contact with the Pittsburgh Steelers of the National Football League. He was informally appointed Chaplain of the team and is credited with influencing them in their first ever Super Bowl win in 1974 when they defeated Minnesota Vikings of the NFC 16-6 in Super Bowl IX. The Pittsburgh Steelers went on to win the Super Bowl again in 1975, triumphing 21-17 versus the Dallas Cowboys in Super Bowl X. He returned to Johnstown some time before August 1977.

Report

The 1988 College Football Bowl Games in 1988, had Four Big Bowl Games: Cotton, Rose, Sugar and Orange. The Bowl Games participants are selected by the Conferences.

In 1947-48, the Rose Bowl became a Western Universities match-up between the winners of the Pacific Coast (now Pacific 10) and the Big Ten, always held in Pasadena, California. Michigan beat USC (Southern California) 22-14 in the 1988 Rose Bowl.

The Orange Bowl had a tendency at the time to match up the Country’s two best teams, for the unofficial title of “National Champion”. In 1988 Miami beat Nebraska 23-3.

The Cotton Bowl matches the Champions of the Southwest Conference with another top College from across the USA, and in 1988 UCLA (California-Los Angeles) were the invited team, and beat Arkansas 17-3.

The Sugar Bowl, like the Cotton Bowl, matches the Champions of the Southeastern Conference (SEC) with another top College from elsewhere in the United States and in 1988 Florida State (an Independent) beat Auburn (the SEC Champions) 13-7.

The Irish interest, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, from South Bend, Indiana, just outside Chicago, won the Fiesta Bowl, beating West Virginia 34-21.

Match Reports 2007

Week 1 – 25 March 2007 – Dublin Rebels 8 DCU Saints 0

A defensive battle opened the season for these two IAFL Central Dublin rivals. Both teamsfought tirelessly to shut down the oppositions offense, with the secondaries having a terrific game. Saints Defensive Backs Willie Coyne, Scott Quigly and Bobby Blankenship put in top performances, as did their counterparts on the Rebels, Steve Archibald, and Marcus Naylor. Saints linebackers Carl Rushe, Thomas O’Regan, Austan Ragans and Joe Carlyle put constant pressure on the Rebels offense, and this coupled the the DB’s effort resulted in Linemen Cathal O’Callaghan, Neil Callanan and Kris Konieczny overwhelming the Rebels Offensive line. alllowing Konieczny to get the Saints first sack of the season on the Rebels satr Quarterback Andy Dennehy.

The Rebels scored the only score of the match when Andy Dennehy connected with Wide Receiver Mike Kresowaty on a 13-yard Touchdown Pass in the first quarter, which was converted by Tight End Henry Wassermann, on a pass from Dennehy for the two points. [Ref: 4]

Week 3 – 14 April 2007 – DCU Saints 0 Dublin Dragons 6

This game was a defensive battle, with the lone score coming on a breakaway score in the second quarter. The Saints, however, managed to block the Dragons PAT (Point After Touchdown) attempt.Throughout the game both sides managed to force the oppositions offense to punt on fourth down. [Ref: 5]

Week 5 – 29 April 2007 – DCU Saints 20 Carrickfergus Knights 12

The DCU Saints won their first game of the year against the Knights to keep them in the leadership battle for the IAFL Central title. [Ref: 5]

Week 6 – 6 May 2007 – DCU Saints 0 Dublin Rebels 46

The DCU saints defense put up a good fight, with two interceptions, and the offense also fought gallantly, but it wasn’t enough as the Rebels ran out comfortable 46-0 winners, leaving the DCU Saints in second place in the Division. [Ref: 5]

Week 8 – 4 June 2007 – DCU Saints 2 University of Limerick Vikings 50

This was a resceduled game from Week 1, and was played in terrible condtions with an understrength DCU squad. The Vikings moved effectively on Offense to move downfield to score many times, and provided significant coverage on Defense to stifle the DCU Offense. Willie Coyne scored the DCU Saints only 2 points with an intercepted Vikings conversion attempt. [Ref: 6]

Week 9 – 11 June 2007 – Cork Admirals 64 DCU Saints 0

The DCU Saints ere overwhelmed in Cork against the Adirals who had over twice the numbers of another understrength DCU squad. A lot of the Saints players played Ironmen – playing both ways – and in extremely hot weather against a very strong Admirals team, were not able to put points on the board. [Ref: 6]

Week 10 – 17 June 2007 – Belfast Bulls 30 DCU Saints 0 #

The DCU saints forfeited this game to the Belfast Bulls, as they had a severely understrength team, more so than in the previous two games, and were unable to field a team as a lot of players were either away or involved in exams. [Ref: 6]

Week 11 – 25 June 2007 – 24 June 2007 – Dublin Dragons 0 DCU Saints 12

The Saints again had an understrength team, half the Dragons numbers, with players again playing both ways, but won 12-0 at home to win their second, and final, game of the season, and end on a high note. Willie Coyne put in a great performance returning a punt 70-odd yards for a Touchdown, and Colm Bolger, and Carl Rushe, who played both Quarterback and Linebacker, both also put in notable performances. Report

Team Ireland played its first Home International Series in Gormanston College, Co. Meath on 10 September 2016. Ireland hosted a 6-team tournament, with Great Britain, Netherlands, Sweden 1 and Sweden 2 the invited International teams, as well as Ramstein Mayhem from Germany.

Ireland were relative newcomers to International Flag Football and were up against some of the top international sides in Europe, losing their first two matches against the GB Lions and Sweden 1 by 33-6 and 33-18 respectively, before winning 34-27 in a close encounter with Sweden 2, and then again losing their last match 52-31 against the Dutch Lions, to finish in fourth place.

Report

The 2011 Stars Football League played 6 matches between 4 teams from 3 states [Ref: 5]. There was no Championship Game in the inaugural season, which was wrapped up in front of 1,900 fans at Tad Gormley Stadium, City Park, New Orleans, when the hometown Jazz beat the Michigan Coyotes 21-6. [Ref: 5]

The second Stars Football League season in 2012 featured three teams in Southern Florida, playing a 2-game schedule each, with all three teams making the Playoffs. The Fort Lauderdale Barracudas, taking homefield advantage in the Semi-Final, beat the Ft. Myers Swampdogs 21-10, to advance to the first Stars Football League Championship Game, which was also held in Central Broward Park in Lauderhill, Ft. Lauderdale. [Ref: 6-9]

Having failed to score during the regular season, the Barracudas again put up a much better showing in the President’s Trophy Championship Game, but this time fell short, with the Daytona Beach Swampdogs winning 16-14. [Ref: 9-11]

The Stars Football League expanded to 4 teams for the 2013 season, adding the Miami Ironmen. The Ft. Myers Swampdogs moved to Pompano Beach, also Florida.

The Daytona Beach Racers, defending champions, were unable to repeat, losing all three regular season matches and losing to expansion side Miami Ironmen in the Playoffs. The Swampdogs defeated Ft. Lauderdale Barracudas 12-8 in the other Semi-Final. The Ironmen, who had gone 3-0 during the Regular Season, went all the way, completing a perfect season, winning the President’s Trophy II, 11-6 over Pompano Beach Swampdogs in the Championship Game. About

The Stars Football League was a Professional Spring Football League that played from 2011 to 2013, primarily in Florida, but also in 2011 in New Orleans (Louisiana) and Michigan. It is notable for introducing a 1-2-3 Rule after touchdowns, whereby Conversions are worth 1 Point if Kicked, or 2 Points if Passed or Ran into the Endzone from 2 Yards out, and 3 Points if Passed or Ran into the Endzone from 10 Yards out. [Ref: 2]. In 2013 the 1-2-3 Point Rule became a 1234 Point Rule with 4 Points awarded for Passing or Running the ball into the endzone from 20 Yards out. [Ref: 12]

AFI & Inside Sport Japan Top 225 World American Football Teams Ranking 2019 [Ref: 1]

Report

Unsurprisingly Japanese and Mexican teams dominate the Top 20 teams in the World Rankings. These countries have played American Football the longest outside USA and Canada, with Mexicos’s tradition stretching back to the 19th Century and Japan’s to just after World War II. Germany also ranks prominently in the Top 225.

Fujitsu Frontiers (Japan) are ranked Number 1, with the Top 7 teams all being Japnese, New Yorker Lions (Germany) are ranked 8, and Condors CDMX (Mexico) ranked 14. Outside of these countries the Top teams are Swarco Raiders Tirol (Innsbruck, Austria) ranked 9; Koc Rams (Turkey), the Top Ranked West Asian team at 86; Western Crusaders (Australia), ranked 97; Joao Pessoa Espectros (Brazil), the Top Ranked South American team at 107; Samsung Blue Storm (South Korea), the Top Ranked non-Japanese East Asian team at 177; and GUC Eagles (Egypt), the Top Ranked African team at 221.

Two Irish teams rank in the Top 225: Belfast Trojans at 205 and South Dublin Panthers at 206.
