Redskins vs Yankees

Report

An All-American Evening at Rifle Park, Banbridge, Co. Down on Friday Evening, the 19th August, 1983, was to have included an American Football game between two teams of specially-trained Rugby players. The “Redskins” versus “Yankees” was to be the highlight of the evening which also had all the razzamatazz of cheerleaders and bands.

The match, if it actually went ahead, would push back the history of Irish American Football a further year. As it Currently stands the Dublin Celts are the first ever Irish American Football Team, founded in 1984, and the first ever match between two Irish teams (A Flag Football match) took place in Omagh, Co. Tyrone, in 1985, between the Tyrone Tornadoes and Coleraine Chieftains.

It is unlikely the teams were kitted, so it may have been something similar to Ohio League American Football in the USA in the early 20th Century, which would have looked more like Rugby Union or Rugby League than the modern game of American Football.

REPORT

Condores UNAM (Universidad Nacional Autonoma de México) were the inaugural champions of the new Conferencia Diez Grandes winning 41-16 in the Finale versus Borregos Salvajes ITESM-Monterrey (ITESM-Monterrey White Rams). The Condores had gone through the regular season with a perfect 9-0 record.

The 1992 season saw ITESM-Monterrey shocked in the Semi-Finals 3-33 by Aguilas Blancas IPN (Instituto Politecnico Nuevo) as the White Eagles went on to defeat Centinelas IGP 17-13 in the Finale.

Borregos ITESM-Monterrey regained the title in 1993 with a 20-13 victory over Aguilas Blancas IPN in the Finale after topping the regular season standings for the third year in succession.

The Rams repeated in 1994, although only after being knocked off the top of the standings by Aztecas UDLA (Puebla) who were defeated by the Rams 17-10 in the Finale.

Aztecas got revenge in 1995, however, defeating ITESM-Monterrey 7-6 in a close Semi-Final before triumphing 43-13 over Condores UNAM in the Finale. Condores had defeated Aguilas Blancas IPN, the Regular Season Champions, 22-19 in the Semi-Finals.

About ONEFA Liga Mayor Conferencia de los 10 Grandes

The ONEFA College Football Championship is one of the highlights of the Mexican American Football season, and was considered the National Championship from 1933 until recently, with challengers both the breakaway CONADEIP College League (2013 onwards) and the Liga Football Americano Profesional (LFA Mexico), a Major Pro League (2016 onwards).

There are a number of different eras in the ONEFA Championship, with UNAM Pumas and Condores UNAM the most successful teams. The Conferencia Diez Grandes (Big 10 Conference) was established in 1991, a level about the Conferencia Nacional (National Conference). It lasted until 2000 when the National Conference was merged with the Big 10 and divided into three regional Conferences with Quarter-Finals to Final Playoffs.

Tyrolean Raiders (Aut) vs Carlstad Crusaders (Swe)

Report

Sweden’s Carlstad Crusaders were winners of the EFAF-Cup in 2003 having triumphed 28-7 against Austria’s Tyrolean Raiders from Innsbruck in the Final. Tyrolean Raiders had finished top of their three-team Semi-Final Group scoring 50-plus points against both of their opponents (Great Britain’s PA Knights and Switzerland’s Zurich Renegades). The other Semi-Final was won by the Crusasders in a closer fashion, 25-12 versus Denmark’s NFA Monarchs. Carlstad had knocked out Roskilde Kings, also of Denmark in their Group match while the Monarchs had received a walkover from Ukraine’s Kiev Slavs in the other Group B game.

About the EFAF-Cup

The EFAF-Cup (European Federation of American Football Cup) was the second level cup tournament for the Champions of European American Football Leagues between 2003 to 2013 inclusive. In 2003 the entrants were from Innsbruck, Austria (Tyrolean Raiders), Surrey, Great Britain (Personal Assurance Knights), Zurich, Switzerland (Zurich Renegades), Roskilde, Denmark (Rosklide Kings), Avedere, Denmark (NFA Monarchs), Carlstad, Sweden (Carlstad Crusaders) and Kiev, Ukraine (Kiev Slavs). The Groups were aligned geographically West-East (Group A: West; Group B: East) with the Group Winners playing in the EFAF-Cup Final 2003. Group A was round-robin each team playing the other once. Group B was Single-Elimination Semi-Finals and Final (called Group Games and Semi-Finals respectively).

Report

London O’s won the fourth Euro Cup – American Football’s equivalent of Soccer’s UEFA Cup – by defeating Norway’s Oslo Vikings 12-0 in the Euro Cup IV Final in Heysel Stadium, Brussels. The tournament was nearly cancelled, but in the end went ahead with a Northern Division featuring two Norwegian Teams (Oslo and Eidsvoll 1814s) and two Danish teams (Kronborg Knights and Roskilde Kings) and a Central Division where London O’s won 63-2 on aggregate versus Amsterdam Crusaders, who travelled with a depleted squad for their second match in London, which had to be abandoned for safety reasons because the Crusaders were short players.

Report

Aarhus Tigers won Mermaid Bowl XI 28-0 versus Kronborg Knights. It was the Tigers’ second Mermaid Bowl in a row and third overall, leaving them just one behind record-holders Cophenhagen Towers. Aarhus had won all six Regular Season matches in the seven-team National Ligaen, while also competing in the EuroBowl. Kronborg Knights had finished second on 5-1, with Roskilde Kings (4-2) and Odense Swans (3-3) also making the playoffs.

There were a large number of lop-sided victories in the league with all 24 games going according to form, including the playoffs. Perhaps for this reason the National Ligaen was reduced to four teams for 1999-2000, which was to be played over Winter. Both Esbjerg Hurricanes and Vejle Saints were relegated to the 1.Division for the 1999-2000 season while Kronborg Knights folded after three Mermaid Bowl losses in three seasons.

Kulosaari vs Kaarela

Report

Kulosaari Roosters won Finland’s NFL Europe Schools Flag Football Championship in 2001, defeating Kaarela 32-21 in an exciting final. Karela were looking to overcome a 26-21 deficit with a couple of minutes to go, battling to the Kulosaari 7-yard line, but there they threw an interception in the endzone which was returned by the Roosters defense all the way back to the Kaarela endzone for the victory. Kulosaari now went on to represent Finland in the EFAF (European Federation of American Football) Group Championship against SHS Graz Air Force of Austria and Paris AS Flag of France. The winners of the EFAF Group progess to the World Flag Football Championships to be held in the German city of Berlin during Kinderfest – the Youth Festival – from 24th-27th August 2001.

The word Roost or Rooster comes from the Old English word for “To Come Back Home” or “To Sleep” meaning a Roosting Bird. It is also found in Old Norse as well as Manx, which comes from From Old Irish rúsc, from Proto-Celtic *ruskos, meaning Peel, Rind or Bark. [Reference: See 3]
