Week 1 Recap

Week 1 in the new Era of Japan X-League kicked off on Saturday, 4 September with Fujitsu Frontiers defeating Nojima Sagamihara Rise 49-17 and Panasonic Impulse winning by a landslide 71-0 against Tokyo Gas Creators. The following day, however, the single game played was much closer, in fact the match-up between IBM Big Blue and Elecom Kobe Finies ended up a 26-26 tie. The other match, to be played on the 5th September, between All-Mitsubishi Lions and Obic Seagulls was postponed.

Weeks 2-6 Recap

The big match-up between the two undefeated teams after five weeks went the way of Panasonic Impulse as they narrowly defeated Fujitsu Frontiers 26-20 to move to 6-0. Frontiers now have to regroup for another crucial top-of-the-standings game with Obic Seagulls shocked Elecom Kobe Finies 38-21 (both Fujitsu and Obic stand on 5-1) in the final week of the regular season. Kobe dropped to 2-4. In the other game that was crucial to playoff hopes IBM Big Blue defeated Nojima Sagamihara Rise 32-28 to move to 2-3-1 and in good position for the fourth playoff spot.

Week 7 Recap

Nojima Sagamihara Rise defeated All-Mitsubishi Lions 40-3 on the Saturday in a game with slim hopes for Rise to reach the Playoffs. Nojima finished 3-4 on the season and All-Mitsubishi 0-7. The Rise were eliminated from Playoff contention by IBM Big Blue’s 34-26 victory on the same day versus Tokyo Gas Creators leaving Big Blue 3-3-1 on the season and in the Playoffs and Creators finished 2-5 with their slim hopes of making the playoffs dashed by the loss. Elecom Kobe Finies finished the season with five straight losses after a 7-52 thrashing by Panasonic Impulse who took homefield advantage into the Playoffs after finishing the season 7-0 and on top of the 8-team X1 Super. In the week’s big game Fujitsu Frontiers narrowly defeated Obic Seagulls 14-13 to leave the Frontiers in second place on 6-1 and Seagulls in third on 5-2. Both Frontiers and Seagulls meet again in the Playoffs with Fujitsu having homefield advantage.

Semi-Finals Recap

Panasonic Impulse defeated IBM Big Blue 38-31 in a shootout to reach the 75th Rice Bowl on 3rd January 2022 where they will meet Fujitsu Frontiers after the Frontiers’ 17-10 victory over Obic Seagulls. Panasonic Impulse go into the Rice Bowl as favourites after a perfect season up to this point and having handed Fujitsu the Frontiers’ only defeat of the season, a 26-20 game back in Week 6 on November 13. Panasonic’s win over IBM was not as big as their regular season victory over the Big Blue, which ended 65-13 in a blowout. Fujitsu’s win over Obic was not as close as the 14-13 game which the Frontiers won in Week 1, but was similarly low-scoring.

Rice Bowl 75 Recap

Fujitsu Frontiers, playing in their 9th Social Championship game in a row, won the 75th Rice Bowl 24-18 against Number 1 Ranked Panasonic Impulse. The Frontiers had won four Rice Bowls straight from 2016 to 2019 but 2020 was the year of Obic Seagulls. 2021 again saw Fujitsu take the title of not just Working People (Social Championship – X League) but the Rice Bowl, this year the sole ownership of the X-League Social Championship (College Champions no longer compete for Rice Bowl) [23, 24] . Of Irish interest in the game is a player by the name Brennan – an Irish surname from Ossory, now Co. Kilkenny [25, 26]. Brennan played Wide Receiver for Panasonic Impulse, making at least two receptions [24].

About the JAFA Japan X-League X1 Super 2021

The Japan American Football Association is the National Governing Body for American Football in Japan. The X-League is the Top Level Social League (Businesses) and from 1984 to 2020 contested the Rice Bowl with the College Champions. However, due to the Social Champions winning 11 Rice Bowl’s in-a-row in what was increasingly a mismatch, the X-League has taken over in 2021 sole ownership of the Rice Bowl (Japan’s Super Bowl). The Rice Bowl has been played since 1947 and Japan is one of the four to five Major Gridiron Football countries in the World, along with USA, Canada, Mexico and Germany.

Craigavon Cowboys Season Report 1986

The Craigavon Cowboys played their first ever fully kitted game with pads and helmets in Shane Park, Lurgan, on May 19 1986 in the first ever fully kitted games in Northern Ireland between two Irish teams. Craigavon Cowboys lost that match 0-46 in what was an inauspicious start for a season that ended in triumph.

Another defeat in the American Independence Day Summer Bowl Festival in Dublin on August 6 followed, where they lost to Dublin Celts in the Semi-Finals of a four team Tournament played with a rolling clock and 20 minute quarters.

They again lost heavily to Belfast Blitzers in the Final Week on September 1, 0-40 but on September 27 they defeated Coleraine Chieftains 33-0 which enabled them to advance to the Shamrock Bowl, which was arranged after the season had ended. There they won 6-2 versus the Dublin Celts with a Touchdown by Nigel Trimble with only four minutes remaining, having gone 2-0 down in the first half having conceded a safety.

The Cowboys thus went down in history as the first winners of the Shamrock Bowl, Ireland’s Super Bowl. The turnaround was largely attributed to Chuck Ebron, a new Coach brought in from USA for the second half of the season.

Report

Irish American Football Teams played four International Friendlies in 1986, the first season of the Irish American Football League. Beginning with two preseason matches involving the Dublin Celts, then Ireland’s only fully kitted team with pads and helmets.

The Celts won their first two games of the season 14-0 versus the Wirral Wolves from Merseyside in England, and 16-14 versus Newcastle Senators in a much closer game.

Following the end of the Irish American Football League season Carrickfergus Cougars took on Scotland’s Ayr Burners in a postseason Bowl Game, losing 8-28.

Then in the last game of the season for Irish teams, the Green Isle All-Stars made up of players from the Dublin Celts, Belfast Blitzers, Craigavon Cowboys, Belfast Giants, Bangor Buccaneers and Dublin Tornadoes played the first ever game against American opposition ever played by an Irish American Football team, going down 0-36 in Kilmacud Crokes GAA ground in Stillorgan, Dublin 18.

Biography

Judge Patrick J. Fogarty was born in Kyle, in the parish of Killea, at the foot of Devil’s Bit Mountain in Co. Tipperary, Ireland on 7th July 1892. In 1913 he emigrated, aged 21 to Canada, along with 5 of his brothers (he was one of a family of 11, with one sister and nine brothers). While there he enrolled in Ottawa University Prep School, where he soon became interested in American Football, and learned to handle the ball with his Gaelic Football skills.

Working by night and studying by day, he excelled and won the Canadian Football Championship with an Ottawa Selected Team in 1914. In 1915 he gained a Scholarship to study and play Football at the famous Villanova University in Pennsylvania, USA, where he played 3 years and studied law. He was a member of the 1915 team that played West Point (the Army Academy) which included Dwight D. Eisenhower, later a famous Army General during World War II and then United States President.

In 1917 he transfered to Fordham University in New York, and then enlisted in the Navy in 1918 when USA entered the First World War. Upon arriving back in USA after the war he finished his law degree in 1921 and started practice in New York. That year he also became involved in the Tipperary Association, and was elected the Association’s President in 1926. He married New York-by-way-of-Kerry girl, Helen O’Meara, and ran unsuccessfully for Municipal Court Judge in Bronx County in 1935.

This entry into the political field resulted in elected to the Assembly two years later, as a member of the New York State Legislature. He was re-elected five times, and served a total of 10 years in the State Capital, Albany. He was appointed Family Court Judge in 1947 by William O’Dwyer and in 1957 re-elected. In 1962 he retired having reached the mandatory age of 70. He was known as a just, fair and humane Judge who based his judgements on the 10 Commandments. The Fogarty’s had six children.

The Irish American Football Association played its first season in 1986, with a preseason game in Shane Park, Lurgan between Craigavon Cowboys and Belfast Blitzers being the first ever full contact kitted game between two Northern Ireland teams, and possibly the first between two Irish teams. Belfast Blitzers won that match 46-0 and went on to become the first team to ever beat the Dublin Celts, 24-20 in the 2nd Leg of the Capital Cup, and although they lost the Cup on aggregate having lost the 1st leg 46-7 in Dublin, they were happy with the result of being the first team to ever beat the Celts.

Carrickfergus Cougars joined later on in the season, borrowing kit from Craigavon Cowboys to play their first ever full contact kitted game against Belfast Blitzers as part of the Carrick Festival, losing 6-55. Londonderry YMCA saw the last game of the regular season as Coleraine Chieftains lost 0-33 to Craigavon Cowboys. The first season was an ad-hoc scheduled season, and teams arranged their own fixtures.

Belfast Blitzers defeated Dublin Celts 7-0 thanks to a touchdown by Glentoran Soccer player George Neill in the All Ireland Championship Final in Belfast in August, but the season did not end there as another match was organised by sponsors Jack Daniels to be played in Dublin, called the Shamrock Bowl. It was to be invite only and Belfast Blitzers, having won both the League and All Ireland Championship declined to enter as they considered themselves already Champions. Craigavon Cowboys took their place and triumphed 6-2 thanks to a late rushing touchdown by Nigel Trimble.

In all there was a bewildering array of competitions and formats to make up for the small number of teams, with Festivals and Bowl Games coinciding with prominent Festivals around the country.

The Preseason featured the first ever fully kitted game between two Irish teams played in Ireland and the first ever fully kitted game between two Northern Irish teams played in Northern Ireland. It also featured the first leg of the Capitol Cup between the Belfast Blitzers and Dublin Celts, a match-up that would happen four times over the course of the season.

The Festivals included the first of the Big 4th of July American Independence Day matches between Irish teams in Ireland, a highlight of the season ever since, with Dublin Celts again winning against Belfast Blitzers. Belfast Blitzers got revenge however in the Final of the All Ireland Championship, also known as the Irish Cup which Belfast won 7-0.

Belfast Blitzers also won the NIAFA Championship – a league on paper only featuring only the regular season matches played in the IAFA Championship i.e no extra games were played towards it. They won the IAFA Championship also known as the Regular Season title, winning all four games, including the second leg of the Capitol Cup, the first time the Celts were ever beaten.

The History books however record the Craigavon Cowboys as the first Shamrock Bowl Champions, after an amazing turnaround under new American Coach Chuck Ebron, who was brought in halfway through the season. They Won Shamrock Bowl I 6-2 versus Dublin Celts thanks to a late Touchdown by Nigel Trimble.

In Division 1 Top 8, Nihon University triumphed 38-14 in the Final against J. F. Oberlin University (University of Sakuramibayashi). They were then due to meet Kwansei Gakuin University for the Koshien Bowl (Japan Collegiate American Football Association title game).

The 2020 Japan University American Football season kicked off in October, with The Top 8 in the Kantoh region playing their first games of the season. Newly promoted for the first time to the top rank, JF Oberlin University (University of Sakuramibayashi) almost came off with the win against Waseda University, but lost 6-9. Promoted back to the Top 8 after one season, the Nihon University Phoenix won 44-34 against Hosei University in a high-scoring thriller. Week 1 – 21 April 1994 – Belfast Spartans 6 Dublin Tornadoes 15

Belfast Spartans 6 Dublin Tornadoes 15 – The Dublin Tornadoes scored a safety to open the scoring but were soon 6-2 down after the Spartans came back with an unconverted touchdown. It was not until the second half that defending Champions the Tornadoes threw off their ring-rustiness and Brian Dennehy went in for two touchdowns, the second of which was converted to leave the score 15-6 at the final whistle.

Week 2 – 4 May 1994 – Trinity Bowl – Dublin Tornadoes 45 Belfast Spartans 6

Dublin Tornadoes 45 Belfast Spartans 6 – The third annual Trinity Bowl, saw the Tornadoes maintain their 100% record, with a seven-touchdown 45-6 mauling of the Spartans. Brian Dennehy scored on a 98-yard Kickoff return to open the scoring (the Belfast Telegraph credits this to Darren Cash). Also in the first quarter Gary Morrell ran in from 25 yards and also kicked the Point After to make the score 14-0. The Spartans fought back bravely and despite the effect the heat was having on the team they narrowed the margin when Mark Helferty sneaked in from inside the one yard line to make the score 14-6 after the first quarter. The second quarter was all Dublin Tornadoes as Gary Morrell scored his second and Brian Dennehy also scored, one of which was converted leaving the score 27-6 at half-time. The Spartans defence rallied in the third quarter to keep the Tornadoes out for the entire 15 minutes, but the heat took its toll on the small Belfast squad and Brian Dennehy and Gary Morrell both finished with three touchdowns on the day for a Final Score of 45-6.

Week 3 – 22 May 1994 – Dublin Tornadoes 6 Carrickfergus Knights 7

Dublin Tornadoes 6 Carrickfergus Knights 7 – Carrickfergus Knights scored the first win over the Dublin Tornadoes in 21 months. The newcomers to the All-Ireland American Football League scored first with a 20 yard Shane Hamilton Touchdown which was converted to make the score 7-0 to the visitors. The Tornadoes did not get into gear until the second quarter, getting within striking distance of the goal-line on four occasions before Gary Morrell atoned for an earlier poor kick when he picked up a fumble a returned it 25 yards to the endzone. Unfortunately for the Tornadoes this was not converted and that proved to be the difference between the teams as there was no further scoring.

Week 1 – 8 June 1994 – Dublin Tornadoes 24 Lurgan Area Raiders 2

Dublin Tornadoes 24 Lurgan Area Raiders 2 – In a disappointing game, the Dublin Tornadoes moved to 3-1 with a 24-2 victory over Lurgan Area Raiders. Two first half touchdown receptions for John Durrad and Padraig Reddington from Quarterback Brian Sutton left the Tornadoes 12-0 up at half-time. Sutton had an excellent game and the Tornadoes lead was extended in the third quarter with two TD runs from Brian Dennehy, from 56 yards out on a daring fourth down play and later from the one yard line. The Raiders only score came from Paddy Patterson who blocked an extra point attempt. He had just returned from Scotland where he was trying out for the Scottish Claymores World League of American Football team (NFL Development League in Europe).

Week 1 – 17 July 1994 – Carrickfergus Knights 7 Dublin Tornadoes 20

Carrickfergus Knights 7 Dublin Tornadoes 20 – Given a boost by a victory over a touring Canadian team the previous weekend, the Dublin Tornadoes ended the Carrickfergus Knights winning streak. The first quarter remained scoreless, but the Tornadoes came out in the second quarter firing and scored two quick touchdowns, a seven yard run by John Durrad and a 30 yard run by Dave Salmon (both given to Brian Dennehy in the Evening Herald). This was the first time the Knights had ever been behind in a game and the question turned to one of how they would cope. Jack Martin pulled the Carrickfergus Knights back to within one touchdown on a 5 yard run in the third quarter. Gerald Graham added the point after to make it 12-7. The Tornadoes held strong, however, and they added a third touchdown in the Final Quarter, when Davy Salmon rushed in from three yards and Brian Dennehy caught the extra point to make it 20-7. (This touchdown and extra point is given to Gary Morrell and Jim Walsh in the Evening Herald). The clock ran out on the Knights, leaving them with their first ever defeat.

Week 9 – 17 July 1994 – Lurgan Area Raiders 7 Dublin Tornadoes 18

Lurgan Area Raiders 7 Dublin Tornadoes 18 – In their last regular season match the Dublin Tornadoes needed to win by 10 or more points to finish ahead of Carrickfergus Knights on points difference and capture the league title. John Durrad’s interception followed by a 15 yard run made the score 6-0 at halftime in their favour. They had to wait until the final quarter before adding to this when Fergal Douglas scored an amazing equivalent of an own goal in American Football. The Tornadoes had started a drive after the whistle and had been stopped only two yards from the Raiders line. All they had to do was clear the ball and they were safe, unfortunately for them the quarterback’s pass was deflected off the running back and the defensive end, Fergal Donoghue (Douglas?) scooped the ball up and ran over the line before anyone could realise what had happened. This made the score 12-0 to the Tornadoes. Soon after the Raiders drove downfield, scoring a 10 yard touchdown pass which was converted leaving the score 12-7. The Tornadoes nerves were steadied by the reliable Phil McGowan, who scored from the one yard after a much-interrupted drive up the field. This left the score 18-7 and that was how it ended, just enough for the Tornadoes to claim the league championship. They now met Carrickfergus Knights for the Shamrock Bowl in Newry.

Shamrock Bowl IX – 25 September 1994 – Dublin Tornadoes 18 Carrickfergus Knights 13

Dublin Tornadoes 18 Carrickfergus Knights 13 – Quarterback Brian Sutton absorbed most of the punishment as the Tornadoes fought off a fourth quarter Carrickfergus Knights comeback to win the Shamrock Bowl 18-13. It was a bruising encounter from the start, with Sutton staying on his feet and playing out the entire game. MVP went to Sutton. Phil Woodyard celebrated his 13th year in the game and Joe Clarke and Alan O’Brien also making valuable contributions. The Tornadoes touchdowns came from Brian Dennehy (47 and 12 yard runs) and Alan Burns (1 yard run).

25 August 2002 – Carrickfergus Knights 6 Team Canada 34 – Carrickfergus Knights put in a splendid performance against Team Canada, an elite team traveling with 47 Under 22 College and High School players from 20 different schools. Carrickfergus Knights had several First Downs in the first quarter, mostly gained through the air with passes from Stephen McDowell to Paul McKillop and Ian McIlroy, however it was Team Canada who scored first through a 24 yard Touchdown run by Ashley Heinz. In the second quarter Dan Gooding also scored on a 10 yard run to put the visitors 14-0 up at the half after Ricky Postma added the 2 extra point conversion.

The third quarter saw Team Canada extend their lead with another Dan Gooding run, this time the Canadian went in from 7 yards out. The Carrickfergus Knights defense was a lot stronger in the second half, letting in only one more TD, another Ashley Heinz effort, breaking free on a long run, after Mike Smith returned a fumble 48 yards to the endzone, which was converted for two points again by Ricky Postma. With the score now 34-0 after the second of Heinz’s efforts, Carrickfergus put together a 75-yard scoring drive, with a couple of good runs by Pete Watt capped off by a Paul McKillop consolation 9 yard Touchdown Pass from Stephen McDowell. The Knights defense even managed to sack the Team Canada Quarterback in the second half, with Linebacker Spencer McDowell tackling the Canadian playcaller for a loss.

Ian Jones Irish-Born GAA Football, Rugby Union and NFL American Football Coach 2010-Present

Ian Jones, born in Cork, was appointed Assistant Strength & Conditioning Coach at the Houston Texans in 2017. He started doing voluntary work, mostly coaching in the GAA while still in College in 2010, where he was Head Strength & Conditioning Coach with Cork GAA (Official) and one other coach, Mark Kilgallon, who is now Head Strength and Conditioning Coach with the AFL’s Sydney Swans, saw potential, and got him an Internship at the University of South Carolina, using his contacts with Craig Fitzgerald, whom he had worked with at Harvard University in the mid-2000s.

He worked 12 Hours a Day at USC, seven days a week, 8 hours each day coaching the Football Team.
[1] After two summers at USC he moved on to London Welsh Rugby Union team, and his first Professional Contract. he was surprised at how low-level the set-up was. They had just been promoted to the Premiership, but the budget was small compared the Colleges in the USA, where Stsdiums can seat 110,000 people and there are massively successful alumni who can fund the College Programmes. He decided to phone Fitzgerald again and tell him it was not working out and secured a contract with Penn State College Football Team.

He stayed for three years at Penn State coaching the University’s Football Team as well as being involved in Coaching 30 other sports during his time there, including the College Rugby Team, and the USA Women’s Rugby Squad which also had s base there. While involved with the USA Women’s Rugby Team he got to go to Canadaon Tour with the, and also travel to Wales, England and the World Cup in france in 2014. . By now Fitzgerald had moved on to become a Coach at the Houston Texans. Jones ended up taking a low level position with the Cleveland Browns in 2016, and from there went on to the Houston Texans in 2017, after Fitzgerald called him up when a position became vacant. [1]

At the Texans a typical day stated at 3 A.M. the S&C Staff train at 3:45 AM, At 6 AM they Preview the Day and set up the Weight Room. At 7 AM they train the 30-or-so Rookies (First Year Players). At 8 AM they have a team meeting and 8:30 AM the S&C staff meet for injury/rehab reports. 9 AM they train the five Long Snappers, Kickers and Punters. 10 AM is full practice – Three Hours Long. At 1 PM until 3 PM the non-Rookies are trained individually, staggerred, before they move off to their own individual training. After that it calms down – they eat, review what needs to be done in the Weightroom, look at data from Practice. at 5 or 6 PM another full team meeting and at 7 PM a Final walk-through for the Day. Once the meetings are finished around 8 or 9 PM, that’s the day done. [1]

From the Texans he took up the position of Head Strength and Conditioning Coach at Salt Lake Stalions, of the Alliance of American Football, a AAA American Football League, the equivalent of Championship in English Soccer, and from July 2019 to July 2020 was Assistant Athletic Director for Sports Performance at Wagner College, Staten Island, New York, a multi-sports NCAA College programme position. In December 2019 he took up the position of Head StrengthConditioning Coach at Rugby United in New York, and also the role of Strength and Conditioning Consultant. From June 2018 to August 2020 he was also Head of Physical Performance of USA Rugby and at the same time Physical Performance Consultant.
