Report

The 1990 season for the Dublin Celts was a mixed one. They did poorly in the NCMMA, the British Second Level, losing all four matches, with another two cancelled, but they also played matches against Irish League teams, beating the Craigavon Cowboys once, and meeting them again in the Shamrock Bowl, the result of which is still disputed.

The highlight, however, was their victory in the Eurobowl over the Barcelona Boxers, the first by an Irish team in European American Football competitions, and in the following round, they went close against the Manchester spartans, one of the top teams in Britain, and indeed Europe, losing in the end only 12-28.

Match Reports 2007

Week 1 – 25 March 2007 – Dublin Rebels 8 DCU Saints 0

A defensive battle opened the season for these two IAFL Central Dublin rivals. Both teamsfought tirelessly to shut down the oppositions offense, with the secondaries having a terrific game. Saints Defensive Backs Willie Coyne, Scott Quigly and Bobby Blankenship put in top performances, as did their counterparts on the Rebels, Steve Archibald, and Marcus Naylor. Saints linebackers Carl Rushe, Thomas O’Regan, Austan Ragans and Joe Carlyle put constant pressure on the Rebels offense, and this coupled the the DB’s effort resulted in Linemen Cathal O’Callaghan, Neil Callanan and Kris Konieczny overwhelming the Rebels Offensive line. alllowing Konieczny to get the Saints first sack of the season on the Rebels satr Quarterback Andy Dennehy.

The Rebels scored the only score of the match when Andy Dennehy connected with Wide Receiver Mike Kresowaty on a 13-yard Touchdown Pass in the first quarter, which was converted by Tight End Henry Wassermann, on a pass from Dennehy for the two points. [Ref: 4]

Week 3 – 14 April 2007 – DCU Saints 0 Dublin Dragons 6

This game was a defensive battle, with the lone score coming on a breakaway score in the second quarter. The Saints, however, managed to block the Dragons PAT (Point After Touchdown) attempt.Throughout the game both sides managed to force the oppositions offense to punt on fourth down. [Ref: 5]

Week 5 – 29 April 2007 – DCU Saints 20 Carrickfergus Knights 12

The DCU Saints won their first game of the year against the Knights to keep them in the leadership battle for the IAFL Central title. [Ref: 5]

Week 6 – 6 May 2007 – DCU Saints 0 Dublin Rebels 46

The DCU saints defense put up a good fight, with two interceptions, and the offense also fought gallantly, but it wasn’t enough as the Rebels ran out comfortable 46-0 winners, leaving the DCU Saints in second place in the Division. [Ref: 5]

Week 8 – 4 June 2007 – DCU Saints 2 University of Limerick Vikings 50

This was a resceduled game from Week 1, and was played in terrible condtions with an understrength DCU squad. The Vikings moved effectively on Offense to move downfield to score many times, and provided significant coverage on Defense to stifle the DCU Offense. Willie Coyne scored the DCU Saints only 2 points with an intercepted Vikings conversion attempt. [Ref: 6]

Week 9 – 11 June 2007 – Cork Admirals 64 DCU Saints 0

The DCU Saints ere overwhelmed in Cork against the Adirals who had over twice the numbers of another understrength DCU squad. A lot of the Saints players played Ironmen – playing both ways – and in extremely hot weather against a very strong Admirals team, were not able to put points on the board. [Ref: 6]

Week 10 – 17 June 2007 – Belfast Bulls 30 DCU Saints 0 #

The DCU saints forfeited this game to the Belfast Bulls, as they had a severely understrength team, more so than in the previous two games, and were unable to field a team as a lot of players were either away or involved in exams. [Ref: 6]

Week 11 – 25 June 2007 – 24 June 2007 – Dublin Dragons 0 DCU Saints 12

The Saints again had an understrength team, half the Dragons numbers, with players again playing both ways, but won 12-0 at home to win their second, and final, game of the season, and end on a high note. Willie Coyne put in a great performance returning a punt 70-odd yards for a Touchdown, and Colm Bolger, and Carl Rushe, who played both Quarterback and Linebacker, both also put in notable performances. Season Report 1999

The Knights started the 1999 season in fine form, starting where they left off in 1998, with a 44-0 shutout victory over the Queens University Belfast Broncos. In week 2, however, they lost to two 3rd quarter touchdowns to the Dublin Tigers, and in week 3, struggled to a 14-10 win against the Broncos in the return game, with plenty of errors.

The Knights came back strongly in Week 5, inflicting the heaviest defeat on the Dublin Tigers in their two year history, the Carrickfergus side inflicting a 36-0 win. The two sidesmet again in Shamrock Bowl XIV, a repeat of the 1998 Shamrock Bowl, with the Tigers running out victors this time.
