MLFS Report

—1989-1990

MLFS Outline

The Minor League Football System (MLFS) aspired to be an official Minor League affiliated to the National Football League (NFL). Following the disatstrous attempts of the World Football League (1974-1975) and United States Football League (1983-1985) the league determined that taking on the NFL was not in its’ interests and decided, in the absence of a proper minor league affiliated to the NFL, to become that minor league. The MLFS re-utilised the ‘Outlaw’ identity of the United States Football League (1983-1985) in its’ team names. 16

MLFS 1989 Season

The MLFS’ first season in 1989 featured 12 teams – An Eastern Division of six teams: four teams in the Appalachian Mountains Region: Charlotte Barons (NC), Harrisburg Patriots and Pocono Mountaineers (both PA), Virginia Storm (VA) plus Florida Renegades (FL) in the Southeast and Ottawa Bootleggers of Ontario, Canada. The Western Division also consisted of six teams: St. Louis Riverboat Gamblers (MO), Seattle Express (WA), Colorado Springs Spirit and Pueblo Crusaders (both CO), and San Jose Bandits and Hayward Outlaws (CA). 17 18

Colorado Springs Spirit featured a Trans Cheerleader on their squad, Shannon Ireland Trump, who claimed to be a niece of former USFL team New Jersey Generals owner and future President Donald Trump. The Colorado Springs Spirit went 8-4 in their inaugural season, reaching the Championship Game after two playoff wins, before being defeated by Pueblo Crusaders. Both teams were from the State of Colorado. 19 20

MLFS 1990 Season

The 1990 pre-season featured three games by MLFS teams versus the visting Moscow Bears – the first ever Gridiron Football team to be formed in the USSR / Soviet Union (now Russia). All three games were won by the MLFS teams with Moscow failing to score a point. 21 22

The 1990 season also featured 12 teams, with numerous moves and replacement teams. The Colorado Springs Spirit started the season 7-0 before Head Coach Pete Riehlman resigned, citing Health reasons, and the same day the MLFS’ leading running back Rick Gales and three-fifth’s of the offensive line left the team. The Spirit forfeited their next game due to being down to 22 players in total, and were duly expelled by the MLFS. The league unravelled, with the Tacoma Express also folding after eight games, leading the MLFS to shorten the regular season to 10 games. Pueblo Crusaders again reached the Championship Game, this time losing to Charlotte Barons 18-24. 23 24

MLFS Legacy

The MLFS folded after the 1990 season, never realising its’ dream of becoming the NFL’s official minor league and the following season, 1991, the NFL instituted its’ own official development (minor) league: the World League of American Football (WLAF) with six teams in USA, one in Canada, and three in Europe. 25 26

The Colorado Springs Spirit Cheerleading Coach, remarked that while Ireland Trump was chunkier than most cheerleaders, she scored highest in the cheerleading exercises, and therefore made the cheerleading team, explaining that they were not meant to base the team on subjective reasons such as beauty. 28

RePORT

—Tomiwa Oyewo

Tomiwa Oyewo started playing Gridiron (American) Football with Cill Dara Crusaders (Newbridge, Co. Kildare) of the American Football Ireland league before being called up for the Irish Wolfhounds National Team and getting a place on the Allgau Comets of the German Football League, the top National League in Europe. While at the Comets in 2022, Oyewo compiled a statistics output of 7.1 yards per run, 381 rushing yards, 458 receiving yards, and returned four kickoffs for 91 yards. 14

In January 2023, the European League of Football announced the Irish National playmaker had signed with the Munich Ravens, to play in the top league in Europe, and one of the major World leagues outside of North America (along with the Japan X League and Liga de Fútbol Americano Profesional México). In his first year at the Ravens, Oyewo produced 1102 rushing yards off 70 attempts (over half of the Ravens total rushing yards), for an average of 6.48 yards per carry, and also 337 receiving yards off 33 catches. Oyewo contributed 90 points to Munich’s 425 total points, off 14 rushing touchdowns and one touchdown reception. 15

As predicted by Ravens’ director of sports operations, Sean Shelton, Oyewo was a big factor in the success of the Munich Ravens offense in the franchise’s first year, with the team posting a record of 7 wins and 5 losses, and Oyewo starting 11 of those games. 16 17

Spring Football Leagues 1999-2001

The return of outdoor 11-on-11 Spring Football Leagues to USA after a break of seven years if the World League of American Football (1991 to 1992 with USA teams) is to be included, or 14 years since the demise of the United States Football League after the 1985 season, was met with mixed reactions.

The first such league after the WLAF to succeed in playing a down, was the Regional Football League, playing a single season in 1999 with five teams in Southern USA and one in Ohio in the Midwestern USA.

After the RFL of 1999 the Spring Football League of 2000 was founded by three high profile former National Football League (NFL) players. The SFL planned on being a four-team, four-week season with a Championship Game, to test the waters for a full season the following year. The SFL only lasted two weeks as the announcement of the XFL by the owner of the World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) in conjunction with the National Broadcasting Corporation (NBC), which had lost its’ contract to show NFL games, put and end to the league in its’ infancy.

The XFL itself was the first Major Outdoor 11-on-11 Football League with a big budget to rival the NFL since the United States Football League of 1983 to 1985 – the first ever Outdoor Spring League. The XFL was launched in a blaze of publicity but ended with a whimper in the ‘Million Dollar Game’ as TV Ratings fell week on week after a big first week.

Regional Football League 1999

The Regional Football League styled itself as the Spring Development League of America (NFL Europe was the Official Development League of the NFL with 6 teams in Europe only). It had 5 teams placed in the Southern United States and one in Toledo, Ohio.

The Mobile Admirals (Alabama) won the Championship in the League’s only season, defeating Houston Outlaws 14-12. One team, the Ohio Cannon only played in seven regular season matches, but were still allowed to compete in the Playoffs as the Shrevport Southern Knights, their only rival for the fourth playoff sport forfeited their last match with the Cannon..

Other teams were Shreveport Southern Knights, New Orleans Thunder and Mississippi Pride. The League had no TV coverage, no outstanding players and little press or radio coverage. [Ref: RFL-3] The International Football League of 2000 replaced it as the AAA Spring League in the USA.

Spring Football League 2000

The Spring Football League of 2000 was founded by Ex-NFL players Eric Dickerson (Los Angeles Rams), Bo Jackson (Los Angeles Raiders) Tony Dorsett (Dallas Cowboys) among others. It set a 4-team 4-game schedule for its first season in 2000, to test the waters for a full League and Schedule for 2001.

The first season, dubbed “Festival 2000” only lasted 2 of the 4 game weeks, and the planned Championship Game was scrapped, with the Houston Marshals and San Antonio Matdors, both unbeaten on 2-0 records, declared Co-Champions. The demise of the League was due to the founding of the XFL by the WWF – World Wide Wrestling (now WWE) owners, and the low attendances, more like Junior High School Games than a AAA Pro League.

XFL 2001

Los Angeles Xtreme won the XFL Championship Game – the Million Dollar Game – in 2001, triumphing 38-6 over San Francisco Demons. There were eight teams in the inaugural season of the XFL, five of them in cities without NFL teams: Los Angeles Xtreme, Birmingham Bolts, Orlando Rage, Memphis Maniax and Las Vegas Outlaws.

The XFL of 2001 was the brainchild of Vince McMahon of the World Wrestling Entertainment, who was refused a license to buy a Canadian Football League team, and instead decided to bankroll his own league. He gained a Television contract with NBC which had lost the rights to show the NFL, and initially, amid much hype the first weeks rating were good, but slid rapidly before the league went out of existence after one season.

The reasons given for this were numerous – there was too much variation on standard Football Rules, the team names were too violent, referencing either criminality or extreme mental states. The cheerleaders were too much like strippers rather compared with the NFL’s cheerleaders. The League was intended to give fans back Hard Working Class Football as had been seen to have disappeared from the NFL, but the XFL was seen as being too hard, more criminally insane than Working Class, according to First Down, a British American Football Newspaper.

Following the demise of the XFL in 2001 the Spring Football schedule consisted of the National Football League Europe League with six teams in the Old Continent, the Women’s Professional Football League (founded 2000), the National Women’s Football Association (founded 2004) and the Independent Women’s Football League (founded 2004 also), as well as the Arena Football League (an Indoor 8v8 Football League on a 50-yard field with two 8 yard-end zones).

This remained the situation in Alternative Spring Professional Gridiron Football Leagues until 2007 when NFL-EL folded and 2009 when big changes happened: the United Football League was founded, and Women’s Football was transformed with the start of the Lingerie Football League (a 7v7 Indoor League), and the replacement of the NWFA and WPFL with the Women’s Football Association – a rival Major Women’s League to the IWFL.

The XFL itself would not return until 2020 with version 2.0 and the small-scale Spring Football Leagues returned in 2011 with the Stars Football League.

NFL Super Bowl (AFC Champions v NFC Champions) 1991

NFL Report

Buffalo Bills, holding the best record in the AFC (13-3) lost their second Super Bowl in succession, defeated 37-24 by Washington Redskins, holders of the best record in the NFC and entire NFL (14-2). For the AFC it was an eighth successive loss in the biggest event in USA sports. The last time an AFC team won the Super Bowl was Los Angeles Raiders’ 38-9 victory over Washington Redskins on 22 January 1984 at Tampa, Florida in Super Bowl XVIII. Following a scoreless first quarter the Redskins scored 17 points in the second quarter and added a second John Riggs run touchdown 16 seconds into the third quarter to take a commanding 24-0 lead. Buffalo hit back later in the third quarter with a field goal and touchdown to reduce the deficit to 14 points, but another Redskins touchdown before the end of the quarter made the score 31-10. Two more field goals by Lohmiller made the score 37-10 in the fourth quarter. The Bills scored two passing touchdowns late in the game to make the score 37-24 at the final whistle. The Arena Football League in 1991 expanded by two teams to eight, with Washington Commandos and Pittsburgh Gladiators leaving the league and replaced by four new teams in Tampa Bay Storm (FL), Orlando Predators (FL), New Orleans Night (LA) and Columbus Thunderbolts (OH). Tampa Bay Storm were immediately successful, winning Arena Bowl V 48-42 versus Detroit Drive. As in all other Major Football Leagues in 1991 the two teams with best records reached the Championship Game. Following the season Thunderbolts relocated to Cleveland (OH) and Cincinnati Rockers (OH), Charlotte Rage (NC), Sacramento Attack (CA) and San Antonio Force (TX) were added for 1992. WLAF Report

The National Football League established the World League of American Football (WLAF) to further promote the sport around the World. Beginning in 1991 with ten teams the WLAF was divided into three divisions: European (with teams in London, England, UK; Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain; and Frankfurt, Hesse, Germany); North American East Division (three teams in USA: New York/New Jersey Knights, NJ; Raleigh-Durham Skyhawks, NC; and Orlando Thunder, FL; plus one team in Quebec, Canada: Montreal Machine) and North American West Division (Three teams in USA: Birmingham Fire, AL; San Antonio Riders, TX; and Sacramento Surge, CA). An imbalance in players allocated by the NFL for development in the WLAF meant no team in the European Division finished with a losing record, and no team in either North American Division finished with a winning record. World Bowl ’91 was won by London Monarchs by 21-0 versus Barcelona Dragons at the hallowed grounds of Wembley Stadium, the home of England’s National Soccer Team. Following the 1991 season the winless Raleigh-Durham Skyhawks were replaced by Ohio Glory in Columbus for 1992. [WLAF References: 1-4]

AAF Report

A new Football power emerged on the scene in 1991: The USSR. Following glasnost the USSR opened up to American Football and a six-team league was established with teams in Moscow (Bruins and Swans), Caspian Sea Region (Sphinxes), Ukraine (Donetsk Scythians and Kharkov Atlantis) and Belarus (Minsk Zubrs – ‘Bison’). The first and only official Championship of USSR ended with a Moscow Bruins victory over Moscow Swans. After the season the USSR broke up, with Moscow Bears (Bruins) and Krasnoyarsk Siberian Devils competing for Championship of Russia. Kharkov Atlantis and Donetsk Scythians joined newly independent Ukraine’s Football Association and Minsk Zubrs joined Belarus’ Football Association. [AAF USSR References 1-2]

Weekly Recaps

Week 1 (18-19 February 2023)

Vegas Vipers travelled to Arlington, Texas to open the 2023 XFL season at the Renegades. Inspite of two first half touchdown passes from Luis Perez to Jeff Badet, building up a 14-3 lead at halftime, Vegas fell behind in the third quarter to a T Laulile Interception Return for touchdown and two T Russolino Field Goals as Arlington Renegades went into the final quarter 15-14 up. Another Luis Perez to Jeff Badet pass intercepted and return for touchdown by De Vante Bausby with just over four minutes to go and subsequent two-point conversion by Deveon Smith left Vegas needing a TD and 2-point conversion to force the game into overtime. Cinque Sweeting caught a 20 TD pass from Luis Perez with 12 seconds remaining but Arlington were left to celebrate after the 2-point conversion attempt failed. [References: 2]

Despite taking the lead early in the first quarter through Cody Latimer’s reception touchdown from Paxton Lynch, Orlando Guardians were to fall 6-24 down by the fourth quarter as Houston Roughnecks rattled off three touchdowns and two field goals in a 24-point scoring streak. Jontre Kirklin and Deontay Burnett both catching touchdown passes from Brandon Silvers and a 27-yard Max Borghi rushing TD left Orlando with a mountain to climb with 10 minutes remaining. Andrew Jameil caught a Quinten Dormady pass for a touchdown to reduce the deficit, but the game was put beyond doubt after Cole McDonald’s five yard rushing Touchdown with three minutes to go. H Duplessis added a third field goal for Houston near the end as the Roughnecks finished the game 33-12 winners. [References: 3]

Despite leading 15-3 with a little over two minutes renmaining San Antonio Brahmas lost their home opener to St. Louis Battlehawks after the Battlehawks drew within three points on Hakeem Butler’s TD reception from A.J. McCarron with 1:25 left in the fourth quarter. Following a successful three-pioint conversion pass from A.J. McCarron to Austin Proehl which brought St. Louis within three points, the Battlehawks were successful with the onside kick before a successful 14 yard pass for touchdown from McCarron to Proehl to wrap up an amazing comeback. [References: 4]

An Interception by Michael Joseph which was returned for a touchdown in the third quarter proved decisive in D.C. Defenders comeback versus Seattle Sea Dragons. With the successful two-point conversion it left the Defenders two-pints behind the Sea Dragons and the home team won the game early in the fourth quarter when Deriq King ran in from five yards out. [References: 5]

Week 2 (23-28 February 2023)

D.C. Defenders and St. Louis Battlehawks were clear leaders in the North Division after Week 2, both teams standing on 2-0 as the Defenders defeated Vegas Vipers 18-6 on a wet and windy night at Las Vegas’ old Baseball stadium, Cashman Field, last used for Professional Football in 1964 when Oakland Raiders played Houston Oilers in the AFL. D.C. went on a 15-point scoring streak in the fourth quarter to haul back a 3-6 deficit and win the game [References: S-6]

St. Louis Battlewhawks joined the Defenders on 2-0 with a 44-yard Field Goal from Donny Hageman to win the game 20-18 versus Seattle Sea Dragons. There has been a long list of 44-yard Field Goal heartbreaks for the Emerald City – In 2019 the Seattle Seahawks of the NFL missed a last second FG to hand the game to St. Louis Rams. Arizona Cardinals also defeated Seattle Seahawks with a 44-yarder in Overtime in 2020 and the Seahawks Jason Myers had made 37 consecutive FGs before missing one from 44-yards. [References: S-6]

In the South Division San Antonio Brahmas moved to 1-1 with a 30-12 defeat of struggling Orlando Guardians. Former Notre Dame Fighting Irish College star Jack Coan passed for three touchdowns in the victory. The game was a homecoming for San Antonio running back Jacques Patrick who starred at a local High School. [References: S-6]

Houston Roughnecks and Arlington Renegades, both 1-0 coming into the game, served up a brilliant game for Texas football fans, as a see-saw battle in Houston, with Renegades 14-11 up at halftime. Cedric Byrd stepped up the pace for the Roughnecks in the second half, however, as the Houston wide receiver put the home town team ahead with a short touchdown catch. After a Renegades FG, Max Borghi ran up the middle for a late TD to seal the win for Houston Roughnecks, 23-14. [References: S-6]

Week 3 (4-5 March 2023)

Three high-octane shootouts and one quieter game greeted fans in week 3 of the XFL. Arlington Renegades moved into second place in the XFL South with a close 10-9 defeat of Orlando Guardians, leaving the Guardians on 0-3. Houston Roughnecks, meanwhile, were firmly in the lead of the South Division after a 22-13 victory over San Antonio Brahmas in the Texas rivalry game which closed out the weekend. Earlier in the weekend, the North Division similarly had a 3-2-1-0 cascade of wins in the Standings with Seattle Sea Dragons improving to 1-2 after a 30-26 defeat of Vegas Vipers in the battle of two winless teams. Meanwhile D.C. Defenders took the spoils at the top end of the table with a 34-28 defeat of St. Louis Battlehawks in a Wild West Shootout of a game between two teams yet to be defeated in 2023. [References: S-7]

Week 5 (16-19 March 2023)

The week started with Seattle Sea Dragons shocking the Houston Roughnecks 21-14 on Thursday night to hand the Texas team their first ever loss. The victory put the Sea Dragons on 3-2, two games behind new Kingpins D.C. Defenders who improved to 5-0 with a 28-20 win at St. Louis Battlehawks, who dropped to 3-2, both teams also playing in the XFL North Division. Also in the North Division Vegas Vipers finally managed to put a W in the win column with a close and high-scoring 35-32 defeat of Orlando Guardians in Nevada. The loss was Orlando’s fifth-straight to start the season and the Florida team prop up the XFL South Division. On Sunday evening Arlington Renegades made the trip South to take on fellow Texans San Antonio Brahmas, winning 12-10 in a low-scoring affair. With the win Arlington move a game closer to South Division leaders Houston on 3-2 and San Antonio drop to 1-4. [References: 1]

Week 6 (25-27 March 2023)

The XFL’s top two teams met in USA’s Capital City – D.C. Defenders triumphed 37-26 at home to Houston Roughnecks to remain the only undefeated team on 6-0 as the Roughnecks slumped to a second-straight defeat after starting the season 4-0. St. Louis Battlehawks and Seattle Sea Dragons both won over bottom-placed teams to improve to 4-2 in the North Division: Seattle winning by a touchdown, 26-19 over Orlando Guardians (0-6), and St. Louis having an easier time in Nevada, winning 29-6 at Vegas Vipers (1-5). In an all-Texas battle in the South Division, San Antonio Brahmas considerably improved their chances of a playoff place with a 15-9 defeat of Arlington Renegades to gain a second win of the season as Arlington dropped to the .500 mark with the loss, and also missed the chance to draw level with Houston at the top of the Division. [References: 1]

Week 7 (31 March-1 April 2023)

With all three teams in the North Division winning besides the undefeated coming into the week D.C. Defenders it left a close race for the Division title with only three games to go in the regular season. Both Seattle Sea Dragons (at Arlington Renegades, 3-4) and St. Louis Battlehawks (at Houston Roughnecks, 4-3) won by the identical scoreline of 24-15 as both teams improved to 5-2. Vegas Vipers gained a second win of the season, 26-12 versus San Antonio Brahmas in Nevada as the Brahmas dropped to 2-5. Meanwhile in the biggest shock of the entire campaign Orlando Guardians, who were winless coming into the game defeated the previously undefeated D.C. Defenders 37-36 in Central Florida. As it stood, Vegas Vipers are the only team eliminated from postseason play after week seven. [References: 1]

Division Championships (29-30 April 2023)

Irish-born punter Dan Whelan kicked a 57-yard punt for D.C. Defenders as the team from USA’s Capitol defeated Seattle Sea Dragons 37-21 in the North Division Championship to reach the XFL Championship Game. Defenders went on to play Arlington Renegades from Texas in the Championship after the Renegades defeated Houston Roughnecks 26-11 in an all-Texas South Division Championship Game. [References: 1-2, S-11, P1-P2]

XFL Championship (13 May 2023)

Irish-born punter Daniel Whelan kicked three punts for a total 158 yards, putting two punts inside the 20 yard line of Arlington and including a long of 64 yards, but was to be disappointed after his D.C. Defenders lost 35-26 to the Renegades in the 2023 XFL Championship Game. [References: 1-2, S-12, P1-P2]

About the 2023 XFL Season

The 2023 XFL season is the third in XFL History, having already played in 2001 and 2020. Seven of the eight teams from 2020 are returning in some form, the exception being Los Angeles Wildcats who were replaced by San Antonio Brahmas. D.C. Defenders, St. Louis Battlehawks and Houston Roughnecks return with the same name and much the same image. Seattle Dragons have been renamed Seattle Sea Dragons, and have adopted orange as their primary colour. Dallas Renegades have been renamed Arlington Renegades after the city where they are based, a satellite city of Dallas. Tampa Bay Vipers have been relocated to Vegas and adopted red and black as their colour-scheme rather than green and lime. New York Guardians have been moved to Orlando and adopted silver and lime as their primary colours. The eight teams are divided into two divisions of four teams each, with top two in each division playing in semi-finals.

Hypothetical Re-Alignment of Professional Football Leagues 2070

With Texan Independence, the four Texas teams: Dallas Cowboys, Houston Texans, Houston Oilers, and the relocated San Antonio Jaguars join the LFA (Liga de Futbol Americano) bringing the Mexican Professional League up to 16 teams. The Texan teams are replaced in the NFL by Allegheny Athletics – a revival of the first Professional American Football team in Pittsburgh, now representing West Virginia; the Watertown Red & Black, the oldest continuously-operated Professional Football team in USA, based in upstate New York, replacing the Buffalo Bills who have moved to Toronto; and the moving of Montreal Alouettes to the NFL. With 16 Teams each in the NFC. AFC, LFA and WNFC (Women’s League), the JSL (Japan Super League) and CFL (Canadian Football League) form a loose alliance. The ELF (European League of Football goes up to 16 teams with the readdition of Scottish Claymores.

A Week and a half before the start of the MLFB inaugural season, which was 6 years in the planning, the League delayed the start of the season due to a “funding delay” with players told to make their own way home and out of training camp in Mobile, Alabama. By the 1st August the League was shut down. [References: 2]

Week 2 (11-12 June 2022)

Panthers Wroclaw sat atop the Northern Division with a 28-25 victory at Stuttgart Surge who fell to 0-2 in the Central Division. Berlin Thunder gained their first win in the Northern Division with a 41-7 defeat of Istanbul Rams, who were left looking for their first win. The Centurions had a narrow 49-46 victory over Raiders Tirol, who were still looking for a first win in the Central Division while Rhein Fire defeated Northern Division cellar dwellers Leipzig Kings 28-17. Weeks 3-4 (18-26 June 2022)

By the end of June 2022, Hamburg Sea Devils were sitting on top of the ELF North Division with two more wins in weeks 3 and 4 over Leipzig Kings (14-0) and Panthers Wroclaw (26-23). The Panthers loss to Hamburg was their second consecutive loss after starting the season with two victories. The reverse to the Sea Devils followed a heavy week 3 loss to Frankfurt Galaxy (13-47). Berlin Thunder also lost two in a row in weeks 3 and 4 – 28-16 to Raiders Tirol and 15-19 at Leipzig in what was the Kings first victory of the season following defeats in each of their first three games. [References: S-1]

The Central Division included not just one of only two undefeated teams after week 4 in Vienna Vikings, but also the streaking Frankfurt Galaxy and Raiders Tirol who both won twice on the trot after losing their opening two games. Vienna’s weeks 3 and 4 triumph’s were 42-13 at Stuttgart Surge and 49-0 versus Istanbul Rams. In addition to Frankfurt and Tirol’s earlier mentioned week 3 victories over Wroclaw and Berlin respectively, the teams also won 48-12 versus Cologne Centurions (Frankfurt) and 33-0 versus Stuttgart Surge in Innsbruck (Tirol). Stuttgart meanwhile were still looking to break their duck. [References: S-1]

The Southern Division was led by Barcelona Dragons, also on 4-0 after narrow wins versus Cologne Centurions (34-32) and Rhein Fire (17-13). The losses were both Cologne’s and Rhein’s first of the season after starting 2-0 and 3-0 respectively. Cologne slipped up in their next game also at Frankfurt, while Rhein’s 42-12 week 3 victory over Istanbul Rams set up the mouth-watering week 4 clash with Barcelona in Catalonia. Istanbul Rams, like Stuttgart Surge were still looking for their first win. [References: S-1]

Weeks 5-9 (July 2022)

Hamburg Sea Devils winning streak continued to 6 games as they led the EFL Northern Division on 7-1. Berlin Thunder put together a four-game winning streak to go from 1-3 to 5-3 and increase their chances of making the playoffs behind Hamburg, while Panthers Wroclaw slipped to 3-5 and Leipzig Kings 2-6. [References: S-1]

In the Central Division, Vienna Vikings remained undefeated on 8-0 with a crucial 29-13 victory at home to Austrian rivals Raiders Tirol putting them three games ahead of both the Alpen team and Frankfurt Galaxy who were both on 5-3. Stuttgart Surge were struggling on 0-8 in a Division with three of the toughest teams. [References: S-1]

Barcelona Dragons topped the Southern Division after week 9 on 6-2 and Rhein Fire were in second despite a two-game losing streak. Cologne Centurions were suffering a six-game losing streak after starting the season 2-0 while Istanbul Rams picked up their first ever win, but were still languishing in last place on 1-7. [References: S-1]

Week 11 (13-14 August 2022)

After a break week for the weekend of 6-7 August, there was a major upset when Frankfurt Galaxy (6-3) defeated Vienna Vikings 42-8 in what was the Vikings first loss of the season. Raiders Tirol joined Frankfurt on 6-3 in the toughest Division with a 44-3 victory in Innsbruck over Stuttgart Surge, who were still looking for their first win. [References: S-1]

The Northern Division saw Hamburg Sea Devils (59-0 winners over Leipzig Kings) and Berlin Thunder (29-12 victors over Panthers Wroclaw) continue their winning streaks, now seven games and five games respectively as Panthers and Leipzig were eliminated from the Playoffs. [References: S-1]

In the Southern Division Barcelona Dragons (7-2) and Rhein Fire (5-4) extended their lead over Cologne Centurions (2-7) and Istanbul Rams with 37-15 and 50-32 triumphs respectively. [References: S-1]

Week 12 (20-21 August 2022)

Hamburg Sea Devils (9-1) wrapped up the Northern Conference with a 39-17 victory at home to nearest rivals Berlin Thunder (6-4) while Panthers Wroclaw (4-6) defeated Leipzig Kings (2-8) 41-37 in a close game which meant very little for either team at this stage of the season other than pride. [References: S-1]

The Central Division was still up for grabs after Vienna Vikings (9-1) rebounded from their heavy loss at Frankfurt with a 37-22 victory at Istanbul (1-9). Neasest rivals and fellow Austrian team Raiders Tirol (7-3) stayed on their heels with a 45-20 victory at Cologne Centurions (2-8). [References: S-1]

Meanwhile Barcelona Dragons (8-2) continued to set the pace in the Southern Conference with a 62-8 victory at the winless Stuttgart Surge. Rhein Fire (6-4) were still not out of the running however, with a 23-21 victory at Frankfurt Galaxy (6-4), the latter coming back down to earth after their massive win versus the undefeated Vienna Vikings the previous weekend. [References: S-1]

Week 13 (27-28 August 2022)

Hamburg Sea Devils clinched the Northern Division title with a 17-0 victory at home to Panthers Wroclaw leaving the Sea Devils on 10-1 and the Panthers out of the running on 4-7. Berlin Thunder kept their hopes of a playoff place alive, improving to 7-4 with a 38-14 defeat of Istanbul Rams (1-10) and Leipzig Kings picked up their third win of the season 38-0 at Stuttgart Surge (0-11)

The Central Division title was won by Vienna Vikings (10-1) after they defeated Barcelona Dragons (8-3) 24-18 in a battle of the Central and Southern Division leaders. The Vikings were helped by Frankfurt Galaxy’s narrow 36-33 victory over Raiders Tirol in Central Germany, meaning both teams were now on 7-4 along with Berlin Thunder and Rhein Fire in the race for Playoff places.

In the Southern Division Rhein Fire kept their outside chance of a Division title alive, moving to within a game of Barcelona Dragons after a high-scoring 59-37 triumph in Cologne over the Centurions (2-9).

The race for the Final Playoff spots now moved to the final week with Hamburg Sea Devils traveling to Barcelona to play the Dragons, Berlin Thunder entertaining Raiders Tirol, and Rhein Fire at home to Leipzig Kings. Frankfurt Galaxy play Stuttgart Surge, Vienna Vikings play at Panthers Wroclaw and Cologne Centurions visit Istanbul Rams to wrap-up the 2022 Regular Season. [References: S-1]

Week 14 (3-4 September 2022)

The regular season finished with Northern Division champions Hamburg Sea Devils (11-1) winning 24-21 at Southern Division champions Barcelona Dragons (8-4). Second place in the Northern Division went to Berlin Thunder (7-5) despite their 10-37 loss to Central Division runners-up and wild-card playoff qualifiers Raiders Tirol (8-4). Tirol sneaked into the playoffs on a tie-breaker ahead of Frankfurt Galaxy who also finished on 8-4 after a 37-13 victory in Frankfurt over Stuttgart Surge who lost all 12 games in 2022. Vienna Vikings were Central Division champions even though they were shocked 42-6 by Panthers Wroclaw (5-7) in Poland, only the Vikings second defeat of the season, both of which were heavy defeats away from home in Austria. Leipzig Kings finished the season on 4-8 in the Northern Division after a close 34-31 victory over Rhein Fire (7-5) in Dusseldorf and Cologne Centurions (3-9) won 43-30 at Istanbul Rams (1-11) in a battle of two Southern Division strugglers. The Playoff qualifiers then were Hamburg Sea Devils (11-1, Northern Champions), Vienna Vikings (10-2, Central Champions), Barcelona Dragons (8-4, Southern Champions) and Raiders Tirol (8-4, Wildcard qualifiers). [References: S-1]

Playoffs (10-11 September 2022)

Vienna Vikings overcame their set-back in the final week of regular season play to shutout the Barcelona Dragons 19-0 to advance to the European League of Football’s second Championship Game. There the Vikings were to meet Hamburg Sea Devils who won 19-7 versus Raiders Tirol thus preventing an All-Austrian showdown. The two teams have yet to meet in 2022 with Hamburg losing only one of their 13 games during the season and Vienna only two games defeated.

About the European League of Football 2022

In some ways a resurrection of the old National Football League sponsored World League of American Football / National Football League Europe League, the European League of Football is the latest top-level Professional American Football League spanning the continent of Europe. The League resurrected many of the old WLAF and NFLE team names, such as Barcelona Dragons (Catalonia), Frankfurt Galaxy, Berlin Thunder, Hamburg Sea Devils, Rhein Fire and Cologne Centurions, as well as adding new teams Stuttgart Surge and Leipzig Kings (all Germany), and promoting European National League and previously members of other smaller European Professional Leagues, Raiders Tirol and Vienna Vikings (both Austria), Istanbul Rams (Turkey), and Panthers Wroclaw (Poland).

Weekly Recaps

Week 1 (16-18 April 2022)

Birmingham Stallions opened the 2022 USFL season, the first since 1985, with a 28-24 victory over New Jersey Generals, once owned back in the 1980s by former US President Donald Trump. Despite a lawsuit from the original owners claiming trademark violations, the league went ahead, and the home team Stallions won the first of four opening weekend games played at their Protective Stadium (it was planned for all games to be played at Protective Stadium throught the season as part of the hub model). Other games saw wins for Houston Gamblers (17-12 versus Michigan Panthers), New Orleans Breakers (23-17 versus Philadelphia Stars) and Tampa Bay Bandits (17-3 versus Pittsburgh Maulers). [References: 13-14]

Week 2 (23-25 April 2022)

In the North Division New Jersey Generals improved to 1-1 with their first win of the season in a low-scoring game versus Michigan Panthers (10-6 to the Generals) and Philadelphia Stars likewise got their first win, 30-23 against Pittsburgh Maulers (0-2) in a Pennsylvania derby. The South Division, dominant during week 1, saw Birmingham Stallions make full usage of the home field advantage to move to 2-0 with a 33-28 defeat of Houston Gamblers, while New Orleans Breakers joined them on 2-0 with a huge 34-3 victory over Tampa Bay Bandits. [References: 13-14]

Week 3 (30 April-2 May 2022)

The South Division match-up between Tampa Bay Bandits and Houston Gamblers (both 1-1 coming into the game) was the closest of the weekend with Bandits prevailing 27-26. Birmingham Stallions were the only remaining undefeated team after defeating New Orleans Breakers, who were also undefeated coming into the game, 22-13. The North Division also saw a match-up between the two joint-division leaders (on wins) with New Jersey Generals winning 24-16 versus Philadelphia Stars. The other game between winless Pittsburgh Maulers and Michigan Panthers went the way of the Panthers, 24-0. [References: 13-14]

May 2022 Recap (Weeks 4-7)

Birmingham Stallions made full use of homefield advantage winning all four games at Protective Stadium in May, defeating Tampa Bay Bandits, Phiadelphia Stars, Michigan Panthers and Pittsburgh Maulers on their way to 7-0. Second place in the South Division was occupied by New Orleans Breakers on 5-2 who went 3-1 during May with only a loss to New Jersey Generals spoiling the record which included wins over Houston Gamblers, Michigan Panthers and Pittsburgh Maulers. Tampa Bay Bandits picked up a win over Michigan Panthers to go 3-4 in an otherwise disappointing May for the Florida team. Houston Gamblers lost all four games in May to be left out of playoff contention on 1-6. [References: 13-14]

The North Division saw New Jersey Generals assured of a playoff spot with their six game winning streak to week 7 leaving them on 6-1. Philadelphia Stars were almost assured of a playoff spot also standing on 4-3 as they defeated Michigan Panthers, Tampa Bay Bandits and Houston Gamblers in May. Michigan Panthers lost four in a row as the team from the City of Big Cats were joined on 1-6 by Pittsburgh Maulers who managed their first win with a narrow 21-20 victory over Houston Gamblers to also stand on 1-6 at the end of May. [References: 13-14]

June 2022 Recap (Weeks 8-10)

After narrowly defeating New Orleans Breakers 10-9 to record their eighth successive victory, Birmigham Stallions suffered a big shock in week 9 with a 17-15 loss to Houston Gamblers, only the Gamblers second victory of the season. The Stallions bounced back with a 21-18 triumph over Tampa Bay Bandits on the Final day of the Regular Season to finish 9-1 and capture the South Division title. New Orleans breakers joined the Stallions in the playoffs with a victory over Tampa Bay Bandits in week 9, but suffered a loss to the surging Houston Gamblers in the last week to finish 6-4. Tampa Bay Bandits won 13-3 versus Houston Gamblers in week 9 as the Bandits secured third place in the division with the win. Houston Gamblers finished 3-7 with those two shock victories against playoff-bound Birmigham and New Orleans to put a gloss on what was a disappointing season for the Texas team. [References: 13-14]

The North Division Champions were New Jersey Generals who finished off the regular season with victories over division rivals Pittsburgh Maulers, Michigan Panthers and Philadelphia Stars to complete a nine-game winning streak to end the regular season after that first loss to Birmingham Stallions in week 1. The Generals were joined in the playoffs by Philadelphia Stars who defeated Michigan Panthers and Pittsburgh Maulers either side of the loss to New Jersey in week 9 to finish on 6-4. The battle for the unenviable crown of first draft pick in 2023 went to Pittsburgh Maulers who finished 1-9 after a five game losing streak to end season including a 21-33 defeat to Michigan Panthers who finished 2-8 with the victory. [References: 13-14]

Playoff Preview

New Jersey Generals head into the Playoffs on the back of a nine-game winning streak which saw the Generals finish the regular season 9-1. The Garden State team’s only loss came in week 1 when they lost to host city team for the hub model in 2022, Birmigham Stallions 24-28. The Stallions themselves finished on 9-1 also, with a shock loss to the surprising Houston Gamblers in the penultimate week of the regular season. The Generals play North Division runners-up Philadelphia Stars (6-4) who they beat twice during the regular season in the Playoffs while Birmingham Stallions also meet a 6-4 team the New Orleans Breakers, who they also defeated twice during the regular season. All playoff games shall be played at the Professional Football Hall of Fame Stadium in Canton, Ohio, the birthplace just over 100 years ago of the National Football League (NFL) the Major Professional Football League. Playoffs (26 June 2022)

Philadelphia Stars shocked New Jersey Generals 19-14 ending a nine-game winning-streak for the Generals. New Jersey had defeated the Stars twice during the regular season. Philadelphia meet Birmingham Stallions in the USFL Championship Game after the Stallions triumphed 31-17 over New Orleans Breakers in the other Semi-Finals. [References: 13-14]

USFL Championship Game 2022 (3 July 2022)

Birmingham Stallions triumphed over Philadelphia Stars 33-30 thanks to two inportant interceptions in the fourth quarter – one of which was returned for a 46yard Touchdown by S Wright III and three more touchdowns as well as two Field Goals by R Aubrey. A Stars fightback in the 4th Quarter was ended by first Wright III’s interception with 3:03 left on the clock and then C McFarland’s timely interception with 28 seconds left which ended the game. About the USFL 2022

The United States Football League (USFL) 2022 is a reincarnation of the successful Spring alternative to the National Football League (NFL) which ran from 1983 to 1985 before an unsuccessful bid to move to an autumn season and taking the NFL head-on [See link to USFL 1983-1985 below for more details]. The 2022 version shall be played entirely within a Hub City in Birmingham, Alabama, a model first used by The Spring League (TSL) from 2016 to 2021, before that league went into partnership with Fox Sports and bought out the naming rights and logos of the USFL 1983-1985 and renaming itself USFL for 2022 [See link below for The Spring League for more details] . The USFL 2022 published a 10-game schedule culminating in Semi-Finals and Championship Game between the top two teams in each Division [10].

Recap

The Major Alternative Football Leagues of 2021 were The Spring League which kicked off its 5th season this year, with a major expansion, adding a second hub city and four teams to its schedule, the European League of Football, Japan X-League X1 Super, and the Canadian Football League.

The Linemen won TSL North in Indianapolis with a 5-1 record and the Jousters were Champions of TSL South in Houston with a 4-2 record. In a close Mega Bowl Linemen defeated Jousters 26-23 [13-14]. Tadhg Leader, former Connacht Rugby player, who was born in Ireland, played kicker for the Aviators who finished 0-6 in the TSL North [8-10].

Following the TSL season, Tadhg Leader moved on to play for Panthers Wroclaw of Poland in the European League of Football, along with a young Tallaght, South Dublin County native Kevin Mayo. The Panthers finished the season 6-4 in the ELF North but lost the Semi-Final 27-30 at Hamburg Sea Devils, who finished runners-up to ELF South Champions Frankfurt Galaxy (9-1) who won the ELF Championship Game 32-30 in an even closer game than the TSL Mega Bowl [7-8].

By the Fall the Japan X-League had kicked off and the 6-1 Fujitsu Frontiers upset the 7-0 Panasonic Impulse 24-20 in the Rice Bowl [4-5]. This was the first year the JXL had sole ownership of the Rice Bowl, previously the X-League Champions contested the Rice Bowl with the College Champions in Japan.

The Canadian Football League, the biggest of the Major Alternative Football Leagues played a covid-shortened 14-game schedule, with newly renamed Edmonton Elks struggling to a 3-11 record, worst in the CFL. The big news on the Football field however was Winnipeg Blue Bombers who went 11-3 in winning the CFL West before triumphing 33-25 against Hamilton Tiger-Cats (8-6) who had upset CFL East Champions Toronto Argonauts 27-19 in the Eastern Final [2].

Tadhg Leader – Irish-born Player (Panthers Wroclaw ELF and Aviators TSL)

Former Connacht Rugby player Tadhg Leader was born in Galway, Ireland. At the age of 15 he and his brother Darragh headed out to kick some Rugby balls at their local pitch on Christmas Day. His dad, a former Galwegians RFC Rugby player made a bet with them that they could not kick the ball over the bars from the halfway line. Both Tadhg and his brother Darragh won €50 each.

Tadhg went on to play Rugby Professionally for Connacht and Darragh now lives in USA where he coaches at Clemson University Tigers. Tadhg suffered a number of injuries during his last few years at Connacht and after playing in Italy he ended up studying in USA and playing for both New England Free Jacks in Major League Rugby and making his Test debut for USA Eagles Rugby Union National Team.

Tadhg was signed up to play another year of Rugby Union in 2021 when the kicker started kicking American Footballs for fun. People took notice and said he should try out for American Football teams and so he went off to San Diego where he was kicking alongside Super Bowl-winning athletes. Unsure of his own ability he asked John Carney, who has 23 years of experience kicking Footballs and Carney said he could mix it with the NFL players.

Before long Leader found himself playing for the Aviators in The Spring League in USA. The Aviatiors, one of four teams based in Indianapolis, a COVID-19 Pod and one of two Pods in the 8-team league in 2021 finished with an 0-6 record in 2021. On May 7 versus Alphas Tadhg Leader scored the first points of his American Football career kicking a Field Goal to make the score Aviators 3 Alphas 7 at Halftime.

After spending Spring in Indianapolis with the Aviators Tadhg signed for Panthers Wroclaw in the European League of Football, making his debut on opening day in a 55-39 victory over Cologne Centurions. [References: 8-10]

Kevin Mayo – Irish Player (Panthers Wroclaw ELF)

Kevin Mayo, who is from Tallaght, South Dublin Co. in Ireland, and had previously played for the South Dublin Panthers in the American Football Ireland League joined the Panthers Wroclaw at the tail end of the season after being picked up by North Park University in Chicago, an NCAA Division III College.
