Report

The origins of Croquet are unclear, it may have been played in the Middle Ages, and possibly even have passed down from ancient times. The first mention of Croquet, however, is in the Field in 1858, which mentions meetings of the Co. Meath Croquet Cracks. the players were mostly young and met at each others houses, and one player, George Annesley Pollock of Oatlands and Newcastle, Co. Meath, laid out the rules under the pseudonym “corncrake” and called them “The Rules of the Oatlands Club” – the first Croquet Rules in the World.

The Championship of Ireland, an Open featuring some of the top players of the World, has been won numerous times since 1988 by Irish Croquet players Simon Williams, Ronan McInerney, Mark McInerney and Andrew Johnston.

Report

Brendan Cummins won his third GAA Poc Fada All-Ireland Championship in-a-row, and his fourth in five years, in 2008, beating Ruairi convery by two Pocs. The Championship was held on Annaverna Mountain, Cooley in Co. Louth on Saturday, August 2, 2008.

About Poc Fada

Poc Fada is the Irish equivalent of Golf, and the two sports have the same origins in the times of the Gaelic Celtic myths and legends. According to early Irish literature, Setanta used his Hurley to hit a ball from his home in Co. Louth, while travelling, all the way to the feast of the Ulster king in Armagh, and Poc Fada is the modern equivalent, whereby a player uses their Hurley to hit a ball up the side of a mountain and down the other side in as few Pocs, or hits as possible. The All-Ireland Championships are held in the Cooley Mountains in Co. Louth every August.

Report

The Amateur Basketball Association of Ireland instituted the Top Four Playoffs in 1977-78. Marian and Blue Demons were the first two winners. In 1979-80 the name of the organization was changed to the Irish Basketball Association (IBBA) to reflect the new paid imports from America. Between then an 1991 St. Vincent’s (Gleneagle) Killarney won it twice, St. Vincent’s (Jameson) Dublin four times, Blue Demons (Team Britvic) from Cork three times, and Neptune (Burgerland), also from Cork, three times.

In 1991-92 the two Men’s Divisions were merged into one Budweiser National League, won by Ballina (Connacht Gold) from Co. Mayo in 1991-92 and North Monastery 96ers, from Cork in 1992-93. The League was again split into two divisions in 1993-94 with the top division renamed the Men’s Super League.

From 1993-94 to 2002-03 the National Championship was won on four occasions by St. Vincent’s Dublin (Saints), Star of the Sea (Belfast) on three occasions and Notre Dame (Tallaght) and Tralee Tigers on one occasion each.

The Association rebranded as Basketball Ireland in 2003 and the two Conference (North and South) system was re-introduced (as in 1991 to 1993). The Super League Playoff Final was won three times between then and 2013 by both UCC Demons (Blue Demons merged with UCC) and DART Killester. Tralee Tigers won it twice and St. Vincent’s Dublin and UL eagles once.

In 2013-14 the Super League was renamed the Premier League for three seasons before reverting to the Super League name, and the National Championship renamed the Champions Trophy. It was won on three occasions by UCC Demons, twice by Garvey’s Tralee Warriors and once by Templeogue BC between 2013-14 and the present.

The IAFL 2 Conference was started as a third level in 2014. Tyrone Titans won the first IAFL 1 Bowl 20-7 over Dundalk Mavericks. Belfast Trojans 2nds won the following year, again a Leinster Regional Team the Runners-Up in South Kildare Soldiers.

Donegal/Derry Vipers made it three in a row for Ulster in 2016 with a win over another Leinster Regional team, the Wexford Eagles (33-29). Meath Bulldogs finally won the Title for Leinster with a 40-0 win over Antrim Jets who were hoping to make it four in a row for Ulster sides.

The IAFL 2 Conference was merged with the IAFL 1 Conference in 2018, but the Conference was reinstated in 2019, Cill Dara Crusaders becoming the first Kildare side to win a Bowl by beating Meath Bulldogs 34-26 in the Final.

In all, nine different teams have competed in the five years of the 2 Bowl, with only the Meath Bulldogs making a return trip to the Bowl.

Report

UCD won the first IAFL 1 Bowl 40-0 over Cork Admirals a year after both clubs were controversially relegated from the Shamrock Bowl Conference for forfeiting fixtures. Waterford Wolves beat Cork the following year – again after being relegated from the SBC.

In 2016 the Admirals won the Bowl at the third attempt – and promotion back to the SBC – beating The Belfast Trojans Seconds Team 38-7. Louth Mavericks made it a second win for the Regions with victory over Craigavon Cowboys in 2017. The Cowboys lost the following year to West Dublin Rhinos, but finally won the title and promotion back to the SBC with a narrow 28-27 win over Westmeath Minotaurs in 2019.

In all six different teams have each won the 1 Bowl once.

Note 1: The 1986 season featured two Finals; The All-Ireland League and Championship based on an Irish / British League and Cup system were both won by Belfast Blitzers. Two months later in October 1986 sponsors decided there should be a big American-style Bowl game to finish the season, to which Belfast Blitzers and Dublin Celts – the top two teams – were invited, but the Blitzers as both League and Cup Champions declined to take part as they condsidered themselves already Champions. Craigavon Cowboys took their place and won Shamrock Bowl I by a score of 6-2 against the Dublin Celts.

Note 2: The 1990 Shamrock Bowl is disputed between the Craigavon Cowboys & Dublin Celts. There was a separate Irish League (Northern Ireland) & League of Ireland (Republic of Ireland) with the Dublin Celts electing to play in the NCMMA (British Second Level) as well as playing matches against Irish Teams. At the end of the Season a match was organised between the Winners of the Irish League (Craigavon Cowboys) & the Dublin Celts, which the Celts won 40-0, according to the AFI website.

Note 3: There was no League in 2000 or 2020

Shamrock Bowl Champions 1986-2019 [Ref: 5]

The Craigavon Cowboys won the first Shamrock Bowl in 1986, after that the Dublin Celts won 5-in-a-row from 1987 to 1991, a record winning streak that is still there today. Craigavon Cowboys won their second in 1992, before the Dublin Tornadoes won three in-a-row from 1993 to 1995, before being stopped short of four in-a-row by the Dublin Lightning in the Shamrock Bowl in 1996. The Carrickfergus Knights appeared in seven Shamrock Bowls in-a-row from 1997 to 2004, winning in 1997, 1998 and 2002, with the Dublin Tigers winning in 1999, and the Dublin Rebels in 2001.

From 2003 to 2006 the Rebels were Champions, with the University of Limerick Vikings winning their first of three-in-a-row in 2007. The Dublin Rebels then won in 2010 and 2011, before the Belfast Trojans won 4-in-a-row from 2012 to 2015, then it was another Rebels brace, winning in 2016 and 2017. The Cork Admirals won their first Shamrock bowl in 2018, before the Belfast Trojans won their fifth in 2019.
