109th Grey Cup (20 November 2022 – Regina, Saskatchewan)

A Ouellette (Two Rushing Touchdowns) and B Bede (Three Field Goals, Two Convert Kicks and One Rouge (Single) were the heroes for Toronto Argonauts scoring 12 points each, and accounting for all the Argos points between them as Toronto ended Winnipeg Blue Bombers dreams of a dynasty with a close 24-23 victory in Regina, Saskatchewan.

The reigning Grey Cup holders Winnipeg were hoping for a three-peat but went down to A Ouellette’s five yard touchdown run and B Bede’s successful convert kick with less than four minutes remaining. The Blue Bombers had scored through two touchdowns from Quarterback D Prukop and a 102-yard punt return for Touchdown by J Grant, the longest in Grey Cup history as well as a Field Goal and two successful Convert Kicks by M Liegghio, however it was not to be as the Double Blues of Toronto took home the 109th Grey Cup. NAL Championship (13 August 2022)

Albany Empire won the 2022 NAL Championship in blistering fashion, reeling off 41 unanswered points after Carolina Cobras took a 7-6 lead. Albany quarterback Sam Castronova fired six touchdown passes at the appropriately-named MVP Arena in New York State to make the Empire back-to-back NAL Champions. Even though Albany were 47-7 up after three quarters the never-say-die Cobras punched back with a Zack Brown Fumble Recovery in the Endzone and a 38-yard Adam Smith Touchdown catch but time ran out for the Cobras as the Empire prevailed 47-20 thanks to a 3-yard TD run by Castronova less than two minuters into the game; a catch from Aaron Wascha for a 13-7 Albany lead after a 3-yard Kendrick Ings TD pass; Aaron Wascha scored a second TD catch and another TD pass from Castronova as well as a 10-yard Darius Prince TD put Albany 34-7 ahead. Two more TD passes by Castronova for Albany put the game beyond doubt: to Marquel Wade a lineman Cornelius Lewis to give the Empire an unassailable 47-7 lead at the end of the third quarter. About the 2022 USFL Season

The United States Football League (USFL) 2022 is a reincarnation of the successful Spring alternative to the National Football League (NFL) which ran from 1983 to 1985 before an unsuccessful bid to move to an autumn season and taking the NFL head-on [See link to USFL 1983-1985 below for more details]. The 2022 version shall be played entirely within a Hub City in Birmingham, Alabama, a model first used by The Spring League (TSL) from 2016 to 2021, before that league went into partnership with Fox Sports and bought out the naming rights and logos of the USFL 1983-1985 and renaming itself USFL for 2022 [See link below for The Spring League for more details] . The USFL 2022 published a 10-game schedule culminating in Semi-Finals and Championship Game between the top two teams in each Division [10].

About the European League of Football 2022

In some ways a resurrection of the old National Football League sponsored World League of American Football / National Football League Europe League, the European League of Football is the latest top-level Professional American Football League spanning the continent of Europe. The League resurrected many of the old WLAF and NFLE team names, such as Barcelona Dragons (Catalonia), Frankfurt Galaxy, Berlin Thunder, Hamburg Sea Devils, Rhein Fire and Cologne Centurions, as well as adding new teams Stuttgart Surge and Leipzig Kings (all Germany), and promoting European National League and previously members of other smaller European Professional Leagues, Raiders Tirol and Vienna Vikings (both Austria), Istanbul Rams (Turkey), and Panthers Wroclaw (Poland).

About Japan X-League X1 Super 2022

The Japan X-League X1 Super is the top Division of American Football in Japan playing for the Rice Bowl, Japan’s equivalent of the Super Bowl. The Rice Bowl is in its’ 76th season this year, starting out as a University All-Star game between East and West in 1947. After 24 wins for Kanto and 12 for Kansai the Rice Bowl became in 1984 a contest between the University Champions and the Social (Club) Champions. Ritsumeikan University Panthers were in 2009 the last University Champions to win the Rice Bowl and in 2021 the Rice Bowl became the sole possession of the X-League after growing concern for the safety of the University players who were younger and less experienced than their Social counterparts, all of whom could boast American professionals in star positions. For 2022 the X-League X1 Super (the top division in Japanese American Football) added four new teams promoted from the X1 Area League – Asahi Beer Silver Star, Asahi Soft Drinks Club Challengers, Tainai Deers and Otonari Fukuoka Suns. The X1 Super was divided into two divisions of six (A and B) to accomodate the promoted teams.

About the National Women’s Football Conference

The National Women’s Football Conference is a National Women’s Tackle American Football League that brought Women’s Tackle Football to the World Stage for the first time. It is in its 3rd season in 2022 having launched its inaugural season in 2019, and has been featured in CBS, Iheartradio, NFL Network, NBC, ABC, FOX4, Yahoo Sports and Sports Illustrated [22].

About X League 2022

An all new start for the Legends Football League (also known as the Lingerie Football League) in 2022 as a rebrand to the X League and eight new teams sees an eight-week schedule with one game per week (for a total of two games per team) before the top four reach the playoffs and the X Cup 2022. The X League is a rival league to the Women’s National Football Conference, the NFL of Women’s Football, which plays for the IX Cup. The big differences are that the X League is 7v7 Arena Indoor Football versus the WNFC’s standard 11v11 Outdoor American Football, and the lack of protective clothing or knee pads that the X League players wear, although the 2022 edition of this Alternative League sees the gimmick of women wearing little in the way of clothing covered up another little bit more. It is also positioning itself almost entirely in the Western USA, whereas the other AAA Alternative League to the NFL/WNFC in 2022, the USFL is based almost entirely in the Eastern USA. 2022 National Arena League Preview

After a reduced schedule of 8 games in 2021 due to Covid-19 concerns, the National Arena League has scheduled a full 14-week schedule with each team playing 12 games for 2022. Jersey Flight have left the league after finishing 2-6 in 2021 and have been replaced by San Antonio Gunslingers, giving the NAL a footprint in Texas. Albany Empire shall be defending the title they won in 2021 with a 7-1 record and two 2-Touchdown victories in the playoffs: 79-62 versus Columbus Lions in the Championship Game after a 55-41 defeat of Carolina Cobras in the Semi-Finals.

ABOUT the IFL 2022

For the 2022 season the Indoor Football League lost the Louisville Xtreme and Spokane Shock but added Bay Area Panthers (San Jose, California), Quad Cities Steamwheelers (Moline, Illinois), San Diego Strike Force (California) and Vegas Knight Hawks (Las Vegas, Nevada) to incease to a 14-team league, divided into two Conferences (East and West) of seven teams each.

The Indoor Football League is a Major American Football League playing Reduced Numbers (8v8) Arena Indoor American Football in USA. Previously AAA, it has since the demise of the Arena Football League (a Major League) after the 2019 season, expanded its Geographic Reach, and has taken the AFL’s position as the Major League in Indoor/Arena Football. This version of American Football is most popular in Mexico, hence names like Tucson Sugar Skulls. LEXFA (Liga Extrema de Futbol Arena) in Mexico is the Major League in Mexico (and also one of four Mexican Majors)

Weekly Recaps

Week 1 (18-19 February 2023)

Vegas Vipers travelled to Arlington, Texas to open the 2023 XFL season at the Renegades. Inspite of two first half touchdown passes from Luis Perez to Jeff Badet, building up a 14-3 lead at halftime, Vegas fell behind in the third quarter to a T Laulile Interception Return for touchdown and two T Russolino Field Goals as Arlington Renegades went into the final quarter 15-14 up. Another Luis Perez to Jeff Badet pass intercepted and return for touchdown by De Vante Bausby with just over four minutes to go and subsequent two-point conversion by Deveon Smith left Vegas needing a TD and 2-point conversion to force the game into overtime. Cinque Sweeting caught a 20 TD pass from Luis Perez with 12 seconds remaining but Arlington were left to celebrate after the 2-point conversion attempt failed. [References: 2]

Despite taking the lead early in the first quarter through Cody Latimer’s reception touchdown from Paxton Lynch, Orlando Guardians were to fall 6-24 down by the fourth quarter as Houston Roughnecks rattled off three touchdowns and two field goals in a 24-point scoring streak. Jontre Kirklin and Deontay Burnett both catching touchdown passes from Brandon Silvers and a 27-yard Max Borghi rushing TD left Orlando with a mountain to climb with 10 minutes remaining. Andrew Jameil caught a Quinten Dormady pass for a touchdown to reduce the deficit, but the game was put beyond doubt after Cole McDonald’s five yard rushing Touchdown with three minutes to go. H Duplessis added a third field goal for Houston near the end as the Roughnecks finished the game 33-12 winners. [References: 3]

Despite leading 15-3 with a little over two minutes renmaining San Antonio Brahmas lost their home opener to St. Louis Battlehawks after the Battlehawks drew within three points on Hakeem Butler’s TD reception from A.J. McCarron with 1:25 left in the fourth quarter. Following a successful three-pioint conversion pass from A.J. McCarron to Austin Proehl which brought St. Louis within three points, the Battlehawks were successful with the onside kick before a successful 14 yard pass for touchdown from McCarron to Proehl to wrap up an amazing comeback. [References: 4]

An Interception by Michael Joseph which was returned for a touchdown in the third quarter proved decisive in D.C. Defenders comeback versus Seattle Sea Dragons. With the successful two-point conversion it left the Defenders two-pints behind the Sea Dragons and the home team won the game early in the fourth quarter when Deriq King ran in from five yards out. [References: 5]

Week 2 (23-28 February 2023)

D.C. Defenders and St. Louis Battlehawks were clear leaders in the North Division after Week 2, both teams standing on 2-0 as the Defenders defeated Vegas Vipers 18-6 on a wet and windy night at Las Vegas’ old Baseball stadium, Cashman Field, last used for Professional Football in 1964 when Oakland Raiders played Houston Oilers in the AFL. D.C. went on a 15-point scoring streak in the fourth quarter to haul back a 3-6 deficit and win the game [References: S-6]

St. Louis Battlewhawks joined the Defenders on 2-0 with a 44-yard Field Goal from Donny Hageman to win the game 20-18 versus Seattle Sea Dragons. There has been a long list of 44-yard Field Goal heartbreaks for the Emerald City – In 2019 the Seattle Seahawks of the NFL missed a last second FG to hand the game to St. Louis Rams. Arizona Cardinals also defeated Seattle Seahawks with a 44-yarder in Overtime in 2020 and the Seahawks Jason Myers had made 37 consecutive FGs before missing one from 44-yards. [References: S-6]

In the South Division San Antonio Brahmas moved to 1-1 with a 30-12 defeat of struggling Orlando Guardians. Former Notre Dame Fighting Irish College star Jack Coan passed for three touchdowns in the victory. The game was a homecoming for San Antonio running back Jacques Patrick who starred at a local High School. [References: S-6]

Houston Roughnecks and Arlington Renegades, both 1-0 coming into the game, served up a brilliant game for Texas football fans, as a see-saw battle in Houston, with Renegades 14-11 up at halftime. Cedric Byrd stepped up the pace for the Roughnecks in the second half, however, as the Houston wide receiver put the home town team ahead with a short touchdown catch. After a Renegades FG, Max Borghi ran up the middle for a late TD to seal the win for Houston Roughnecks, 23-14. [References: S-6]

Week 3 (4-5 March 2023)

Three high-octane shootouts and one quieter game greeted fans in week 3 of the XFL. Arlington Renegades moved into second place in the XFL South with a close 10-9 defeat of Orlando Guardians, leaving the Guardians on 0-3. Houston Roughnecks, meanwhile, were firmly in the lead of the South Division after a 22-13 victory over San Antonio Brahmas in the Texas rivalry game which closed out the weekend. Earlier in the weekend, the North Division similarly had a 3-2-1-0 cascade of wins in the Standings with Seattle Sea Dragons improving to 1-2 after a 30-26 defeat of Vegas Vipers in the battle of two winless teams. Meanwhile D.C. Defenders took the spoils at the top end of the table with a 34-28 defeat of St. Louis Battlehawks in a Wild West Shootout of a game between two teams yet to be defeated in 2023. [References: S-7]

Week 5 (16-19 March 2023)

The week started with Seattle Sea Dragons shocking the Houston Roughnecks 21-14 on Thursday night to hand the Texas team their first ever loss. The victory put the Sea Dragons on 3-2, two games behind new Kingpins D.C. Defenders who improved to 5-0 with a 28-20 win at St. Louis Battlehawks, who dropped to 3-2, both teams also playing in the XFL North Division. Also in the North Division Vegas Vipers finally managed to put a W in the win column with a close and high-scoring 35-32 defeat of Orlando Guardians in Nevada. The loss was Orlando’s fifth-straight to start the season and the Florida team prop up the XFL South Division. On Sunday evening Arlington Renegades made the trip South to take on fellow Texans San Antonio Brahmas, winning 12-10 in a low-scoring affair. With the win Arlington move a game closer to South Division leaders Houston on 3-2 and San Antonio drop to 1-4. [References: 1]

Week 6 (25-27 March 2023)

The XFL’s top two teams met in USA’s Capital City – D.C. Defenders triumphed 37-26 at home to Houston Roughnecks to remain the only undefeated team on 6-0 as the Roughnecks slumped to a second-straight defeat after starting the season 4-0. St. Louis Battlehawks and Seattle Sea Dragons both won over bottom-placed teams to improve to 4-2 in the North Division: Seattle winning by a touchdown, 26-19 over Orlando Guardians (0-6), and St. Louis having an easier time in Nevada, winning 29-6 at Vegas Vipers (1-5). In an all-Texas battle in the South Division, San Antonio Brahmas considerably improved their chances of a playoff place with a 15-9 defeat of Arlington Renegades to gain a second win of the season as Arlington dropped to the .500 mark with the loss, and also missed the chance to draw level with Houston at the top of the Division. [References: 1]

Week 7 (31 March-1 April 2023)

With all three teams in the North Division winning besides the undefeated coming into the week D.C. Defenders it left a close race for the Division title with only three games to go in the regular season. Both Seattle Sea Dragons (at Arlington Renegades, 3-4) and St. Louis Battlehawks (at Houston Roughnecks, 4-3) won by the identical scoreline of 24-15 as both teams improved to 5-2. Vegas Vipers gained a second win of the season, 26-12 versus San Antonio Brahmas in Nevada as the Brahmas dropped to 2-5. Meanwhile in the biggest shock of the entire campaign Orlando Guardians, who were winless coming into the game defeated the previously undefeated D.C. Defenders 37-36 in Central Florida. As it stood, Vegas Vipers are the only team eliminated from postseason play after week seven. [References: 1]

Division Championships (29-30 April 2023)

Irish-born punter Dan Whelan kicked a 57-yard punt for D.C. Defenders as the team from USA’s Capitol defeated Seattle Sea Dragons 37-21 in the North Division Championship to reach the XFL Championship Game. Defenders went on to play Arlington Renegades from Texas in the Championship after the Renegades defeated Houston Roughnecks 26-11 in an all-Texas South Division Championship Game. [References: 1-2, S-11, P1-P2]

XFL Championship (13 May 2023)

Irish-born punter Daniel Whelan kicked three punts for a total 158 yards, putting two punts inside the 20 yard line of Arlington and including a long of 64 yards, but was to be disappointed after his D.C. Defenders lost 35-26 to the Renegades in the 2023 XFL Championship Game. [References: 1-2, S-12, P1-P2]

About the 2023 XFL Season

The 2023 XFL season is the third in XFL History, having already played in 2001 and 2020. Seven of the eight teams from 2020 are returning in some form, the exception being Los Angeles Wildcats who were replaced by San Antonio Brahmas. D.C. Defenders, St. Louis Battlehawks and Houston Roughnecks return with the same name and much the same image. Seattle Dragons have been renamed Seattle Sea Dragons, and have adopted orange as their primary colour. Dallas Renegades have been renamed Arlington Renegades after the city where they are based, a satellite city of Dallas. Tampa Bay Vipers have been relocated to Vegas and adopted red and black as their colour-scheme rather than green and lime. New York Guardians have been moved to Orlando and adopted silver and lime as their primary colours. The eight teams are divided into two divisions of four teams each, with top two in each division playing in semi-finals.

Dublin Rebels tore up the opposition, winning all eight regular season games by a combined total of 390 points to 82 – average of almost 50 points scored per game. Cork Admirals finished the regular season runners-up with a 7-1 record, finishing the season with a 42-0 defeat of South Dublin Panthers who missed out on the playoffs due to a ruled-forfeit in their last game at Belfast Trojans. University College Dublin and Belfast Trojans both finished 5-3, making the Semi-Finals ahead of the 3-5 Panthers. Westmeath Minotaurs and Belfast Knights put in respectable 2-6 records and Craigavon Cowboys finished 0-8, but put in some good performances on defence. [References: S-1 to S-11]

Recap

The 2022 American Football Ireland Kitted Intervarsities were held in the University of Limerick on 19 November 2022. The host college defeated reigning Shamrock Bowl Champions University College Dublin 16-2 in the opening game. UCD bounced back in the second game, winning 26-6 versus Trinity College Dublin before the University of Limerick Vikings took the College title with a 36-0 triumph over Trinity. [References: 1-3]

University College Dublin described the games as a huge display of talented rookies, with multiple big plays on both sides of the ball, including a 70-yard run, interceptions, fumbles and a few sacks. The University of Limerick Vikings described both games as savage. [References: 1-3]

Recap

1958 was the first official year of the Canadian Football League (CFL) and Winnipeg Blue Bombers greatest season ever, winning 13 games (a team record only beaten in 2022) and proceeding to win the Grey Cup by defeating Hamilton Tiger-Cats 35-28. Along the way in the playoffs they won the Western Final by two games to one versus Edmonton Eskimos who had knocked out Saskatchewan Roughriders in two games in the Western Semi-Final. The Eastern Final was won by Hamilton in two games versus Ottawa Rough Riders, who had eliminated Montreal Alouettes 26-12 in a single game in the Eastern Semi-Final. [References: S-1]

About the 1958 Canadian Football League

1958 was the first official year of the Canadian Football League, having broken away from the Canadian Rugby Union and adopted fully Gridiron Football rules like in the National Football League with a number of exceptions: 3-Downs to move the ball 10 yards or the ball is turned over rather than four in the NFL; 12 players on the Field at any one time rather than 11 in the NFL; and the possibility to score a Single (also known as a Rouge) where the ball is kicked through the back of the endzone but not through the goalposts. The Field is much bigger too – 110 yards long with 20 yard endzones rather than 100n yardsv long with 10 yard endzones as in the NFL.

Shamrock Bowl III

– Photo by Jean Daniel Francouer on Pexels.com

Dublin Celts made it two wins from three Shamrock Bowl appearances with a powerful 34-6 triumph over the visiting Belfast Blitzers at Terenure Rugby Club in Dublin. The Celts utilised a grinding running game on a blustery day in Dublin as fullback Martin Murphy led a balanced twin rushing attack with 120 yards and one Touchdown to supplement MVP (Most Valuable Player) Marcus Cunningham's 116 yards and two Touchdowns. The Celts got an early lead with Quarterback John Donnelly plunging in from two yards. Not long later the Celts took advantage of a Gerard Breen interception, as halfback Marcus Cunningham went in off a 40 yard sweep. Just before halftime Cunningham got his second, as he scored from 14 yards out on a well-executed tra. Another interception by the Celts, this time from Steve Kavanagh culminated in Murphy's 19 yard sweep for TD after another long drive. Another short yard TD from QB Donnelly sealed victory for the Celts before a late Blitzers consolation TD from fullback Dale Elliott from 12 yards on a running play took the bare look off the Blitzers end of the scoreboard. The Celts' win was the first by a home team in the Shamrock Bowl and carried possible EuroBowl qualification for 1989.

Dublin Tornadoes arrived an hour late in Belfast for their Week 8 1988 IAFL Regular Season match-up sponsored by Smithwicks in aid of the Pelethon Appeal.  The coach the Tornadoes were travelling in had broken down enroute and the players had no time to prepare for the game, which was to be played before TV Cameras.  Belfast Blitzers won comfortably by a score of 36-6 putting the Belfast team back in contention for the National Conference title. The loss left Tornadoes on 1-3. [References: 13-14]

Despite the closeness of the scoreline the Spartans remained unbeaten on 3-0 atop the Irish Conference, with Carrickfergus bottom of the same Conference on 0-3 as Belfast defeated the Cougars 14-13. [References: 14]

Shamrock Bowl III (25 September 1988)

– Photo by Jean Daniel Francouer on Pexels.com

Dublin Celts made it two wins from three Shamrock Bowl appearances with a powerful 34-6 triumph over the visiting Belfast Blitzers at Terenure Rugby Club in Dublin. The Celts utilised a grinding running game on a blustery day in Dublin as fullback Martin Murphy led a balanced twin rushing attack with 120 yards and one Touchdown to supplement MVP (Most Valuable Player) Marcus Cunningham’s 116 yards and two Touchdowns.

Another interception by the Celts, this time from Steve Kavanagh culminated in Murphy’s 19 yard sweep for TD after another long drive.

Another short yard TD from QB Donnelly sealed victory for the Celts before a late Blitzers consolation TD from fullback Dale Elliott from 12 yards on a running play took the bare look off the Blitzers end of the scoreboard.

The Celts’ win was the first by a home team in the Shamrock Bowl and carried possible EuroBowl qualification for 1989. [References: 1988-24 to 1988-25]

About the 1988 Irish American Football League

– Photo by Ricardo CL on Pexels.com

football helmet beside football on gray asphalt road

The 1988 Irish American Football League was the third season of the league. Eight teams returned from the 1987 season – both East Side Jets and Jordanstown Jaguars had disbanded mid-way through the 1987 season and Bangor Buccaneers had moved to Newtownards, becoming the North Down Raiders but never played in the 1988 season. NI Giants (also known as Belfast Tennants Giants for sponsorship reasons) pulled out after the preseason after a dispute over scheduling leaving seven teams, divided into two Conferences: National and Irish. The two Conference Champions plus the two teams with the next best records qualified for the Shamrock Bowl Playoffs. Dublin Celts, Craigavon Cowboys, Belfast Blitzers and Dublin Tornadoes contested the National Conference while Coleraine Chieftains, Carrickfergus Cougars, and Belfast Labatt Spartans contested the Irish Conference.

Eurobowl Playoffs 1988

Ireland’s Dublin Celts lost 36-12 in Austria to Graz Giants on 1 November 1987 in the Eurobowl Qualifying game. Graz Giants went on to compete in the Eurobowl Tournament proper in England from the 30 July 1988 to 7 August 1988.

The Helsinki Roosters won Eurobowl II behind the strong running of American Mike Kane who scored three touchdowns in their shock 35-33 defeat of favourites Frogs Legnano from Milan, Italy in the Semi-Finals, and then bettered that by scoring four touchdowns in the Roosters 35-14 triumph at Crystal Palace in London, in the Eurobowl II Final.

Frogs Legnano defeated Berlin Adler 28-3 in the Third Place Playoff.

National Bowl Games 1987

Qualifying for the Eurobowl Tournament 1988 was by winning the European Football League members’ National Bowl Game in 1987. Dublin Celts triumphed 43-25 over Craigavon Cowboys in Shamrock Bowl II to represent Ireland. The Celts met Austrian Bowl Champions Graz Giants in a Qualifying game after Graz won Austrian Bowl III 20-0 versus Salzburg Lions.

Italian Champions were Legnano Frogs who were victorious by 27-24 versus Seamen Milano in Super Bowl VII to win the 28-team Italian League. Berlin Adler were the German representatives after winning German Bowl IX 37-12 over Badener Greifs in the 24-team German 1. Bundesliga. British representatives London Ravens triumphed 40-23 over Manchester Allstars to take Britbowl III and the 20-team British Budweiser League National Division.

French Champions Paris Castors had a surprisingly easy 75-0 victory over Paris Jets to win the 16-team Casque d’Or for the Casque d’Or VI title. The ten team Finnish Maple League was won by Helsinki Roosters who triumphed 14-7 versus Turku Trojans in Maple Bowl VIII. Amsterdam Crusaders defeated The Hague Raiders 47-13 to win Tulip Bowl III in the Netherlands and in Switzerland Zurich Renegades won the 2nd Swiss Meisterschaft with an 8-0 win over Lugano Seagulls.

Recap

Of interest to Irish readers in the LEXFA Lega Extrema de Football Americano in 2022 was the Peleadores team – Spanish for Fighters – the team were originally called Fighting Irish and continue to use the Notre Dame Fighting Irish Leprechaun Mascot Logo. Peleadores played in Division 4 in 2022, and although the six divisions from the Premiere down to Division 5 are organised according to ability there were a number of Inter-Division games during the regular season for all 42 teams. [References: 1-6]

Peleadoes looked certain of a playoff spot after going 2-2 in their first four games but lost their last two to finish the regular season 2-4 and in sixth place, just about doing enough to qualify for the Division 4 playoffs ahead of Sooners who had also finished 2-4 after winning their final two games. Peleadores scored eight more points than Sooners (124 to 116) to make the playoffs. [References: 5]

Once in the playoffs the Peleadores found form at the right time, winning their Round 1 match-up with Pig Machine 21-20. Then in Round 2 they met Division Title Winners Titanes (4-2) again winning by a slim margin, 33-30. Now in the Finale of Division 4 they met Orcas who after losing their first three games were now on a five-game winning streak, including two playoff victories, but once again the team which referenced the Irish Community in Mexico came good, winning the Division 4 Championship by a Final Score of 29-24. [References: 7-9]

The overall title was won by Legends who triumphed over Supermans Bizarros by 29-18 to take the Premiere title. Division 1 went to Dragones Aztecas who defeated Jugosos 40-14; Division 2 winners were Gavilanes who won 33-27 versus Tigres Coacalco; Division 3 Champions were Black Demons who won 28-14 versus Carneros Toluca Senior; and Division 5 honours went to Puercos Salvajes who beat Centauros 40-14. Recap

Quad City Steamwheelers from Moline, Illinois, repeated as af2 ArenaCup Champions thanks to a 55-51 victory over Richmond Speed from Virginia in ArenaCup 2001. Ironman Scott Hvistendahl hauled in a 3 yard Touchdown Reception from Quarterback Jay McDonagh with 10 seconds remaining to give the Steamwheelers the victory. A little over a minute earlier Kevin Harvey had caught a 13-yard reception from QB Bob Bees in the endzone to give Richmond a 48-44 lead in a rollercoaster game where the lead changed hands 16 times with neither team recording back-to-back scores. The game was played in front of 8,261 fans in Moline, Illinois.

Quad City Steamwheelers had finished the regular season National Conference Midwest Division Champions on 15-1 before defeating Macon Knights (10-6, American Southwest) 80-55 in the Quarter-Final Round and Carolina Rhinos (12-4, American Northeast) 35-16 in the Semi-Final Round. Richmond Speed’s path to the ArenaCup included posting a 13-3 record to win the American Conference Northeast Division title before knocking out Birmingham Steeldogs (12-4, National South Central) 67-60 in the Quarter-Final Round and in an exciting overtime game overcoming Tennessee Valley Vipers from Hunstsville, Alabama (14-2, National South Central) in the Semi-Final Round. Other teams to make the Playoffs were American Southeast Champions Tallahassee Thunder (11-5) and National Midwest runners-up Tulsa Talons (13-3).

About Arena Football League af2

The Arena Football League was the original Indoor or Arena American Football League, established in 1986. After the court ruling in 1998 that its patent (awarded in 1989) only referred to the rebound nets either side of the goalposts, everything else was football, and not under copyright, as it was already in the common sphere.

This opened the door to rival Indoor Leagues, and in an attempt to see them off Arena Football League created Arena Football 2 (af2) in 2000, an official Minor League. This was an over-expansion and coupled with the debts from the court case related to the patent, it incurred a legacy debt that left the League in no position to continue after 2019.

For the second af2 season in 2001, the league consisted of 28 franchises, in two conferences (American and National). The American Conference (East Coast) had two divisions of seven teams each: Northeast and Southeast and the National Conference (Central USA) also had two divisions of seven teams (Midwest and South Central). The top two teams in each division qualified for the playoffs, seeded 1-8.

ABOUT ARENA / INDOOR FOOTBALL

Indoor Football, also known as Arena Football was developed in 1986 as an 8v8 form of Indoor American Football. After an initial few seasons where the game was developed with a 4 team league, a full seasons League with eventually over a dozen teams was developed in the 1990 which was considered by the Wall Street Journal to be a fifth major.

The Arena Football League over-expanded in the 2000s with a Minor League, and its importance (and number of teams) waned since it first experienced financial diffulty in 2009, and it ceased operations after the 2019 season due to the legacy debt incurred.

There is now, however, Indoor Football Leagues all over America, all of which would now be considered Minor League or Semi-Pro (AAA, AA, or even A)

Indoor Football is played on a 50-yard field with two 8-yard endzones, and teams have 5 downs (attempts) to reach the endzone or the ball is turned over. 3 of those downs must be passing plays, making Indoor Football highly explosive and high scoring.

The main difference between Arena Football & Indoor Football is the rebound nets either side of the goalposts in Arena Football, which is the only part of the original patent given to the Arena Football League in 1989, that a subsequent ruling in 1998 ruled was copyright, the rest being Football already in other leagues.
