Matchday 2 (24-25 September 2022)

Matchday 2 wins for Panasonic Impulse (55-7 versus Tainai Deers) and IBM Big Blue (49-35 versus All Mitsubishi Lions) put them both on 2-0 and in command of Division A. Nojima Sagamihara Rise and Asahi Beer Silver Star were both on 1-1 just behind the two front-runners after Nojima Sagamihara defeated the Silver Star 31-21. Deers and Lions were both 0-2.

Division B was now a clear path for defending champions Fujitsu Frontiers after their 69-21 defeat of newly-promoted Otonari Fukuoka Suns who remain on 0-2 along with Tokyo Gas Creators who lost 17-19 to the other newly-promoted team in Division B Asahi Soft Drinks Challengers. Second place was held jointly by Obic Seagulls and Elecom Kobe Finies, both on 1-0-1 after a 14-14 tie at Akitsu Soccer Field. [References: 1-2]

Matchday 3 (8-10 October 2022)

Panasonic Impulse (68-0 victors over Asahi Beer Silver Star) and IBM Big Blue (27-24 winners versus Nojima Sagamihara Rise) continued to set the pace on 3-0 in Division A. Tainai Deers joined Silver Stars and Rise on 1-2 as the newly promoted team defeated All-Mitsubishi Lions 28-26 to register their first win in the topflight.

Division B was a three horse race by the end of Matchday 3, as Fujitsu Frontiers (3-0) defeated Asahi Soft Drinks Challengers 40-7 in a double bill at Kobe Oji Stadium that also featured the other Rice Bowl contestant from 2021 versus Asahi Soft Drinks brother Asahi Beer. Matchday 4 (22-23 October 2022)

Panasonic Impulse and IBM Big Blue kept their 100% record through Matchday 4 as the Impulse won handsomely against All Mitsubishi Lions 73-0 and IBM Big Blue struggled to win 28-21 versus Asahi Beer Silver Star. Playoffs Preview (19-20 November 2022)

The Top four teams in each Division reach the Playoffs with Cross-Division Match-Ups in Round 1 (Quarter-Finals). Last years Rice Bowl winners Fujitsu Frontiers (5-0) host Asahi Beer Silver Star (2-3) in a match the Frontiers should easily win. 2021’s Rice Bowl runners-up and 2022 Division A Champions Panasonic Impulse (5-0) likewise should have little trouble defeating Asahi Soft Drinks Challengers (2-3). The other two quarter-finals are harder to judge with IBM Big Blue (4-1) coming up against Elecom Kobe Finies (3-1-1) and Obic Seagulls (3-1-1) hosting Nojima Sagamihara Rise (3-2) in Yokohama Stadium. [References: 1-2; 8]

The relegation match-ups pit Tokyo Gas Creators (1-4) against All Mitsubishi Lions (0-5) and Tainai Deers (1-4) against Otonari Fukuoka Suns (0-5). [References: 8]

Playoffs Round 1 (19-20 November 2022)

In the Relegation Round 1 Playoffs Tokyo Gas Creators (2-4 all games) defeated All Mitsubishi Lions 13-7 (0-6) and Tainai Deers (2-4) won 41-30 versus Otonari Fukuoka Suns (0-6) in a far higher-scoring contest at Yokohama Stadium as part of a double-header.

The third match on Saturday 19 November 2022 saw Panasonic Impulse (6-0) struggle to beat Asahi Soft Drinks Challengers (2-4) 38-28 in the Rice Bowl Playoffs Round 1 at Yodoko Sakura Stadium. The following day at Yokohama Stadium in a triple-header Elecom Kobe Finies (4-1-1) provided a minor shock in defeating IBM Big Blue (4-2) 35-25, defending Champions Fujitsu Frontiers (6-0) defeated Asahi Beer Silver Star (2-4) 53-3 in a blow-out and Obic Seagulls (4-1-1) triumphed 21-9 versus Nojima Sagamihara Rise (3-3). [References: 8]

Playoff Semi-Finals (11-12 December 2022)

Panasonic Impulse and Fujitsu Frontiers set up a rematch of the 2021 Rice Bowl after defeating Obic Seagulls 30-10 and Elecom Kobe Finies 39-21 respectively in the Semi-Finals. For Fujitsu it shall be a chance to repeat while Panasonic shall be looking for revenge after defeat in Rice Bowl 2021. [References: 9]

Rice Bowl 76 (3 January 2023)

Despite falling behind 14-0 early on thanks to two Mitchell Victor Jamano Touchdown runs for Panasonic Impulse, Fujitsu Frontiers captured their second Rice Bowl in a row thanks to three Touchdown runs by their own Trashawn Nixon, the first one pulling them to within four points at the half, the second bringing the Frontiers back into the game after Panasonic’s Quarterback Jaylon Henderson found Watanabe Jamal for a 10-yard Touchdown Pass and then Nixon’s third Rushing TD, which earned him the MVP (Most Valuable Player) Award and put Fujitsu 29-21 up following the Frontiers go-ahead Passing TD from QB Tsubasa Takagi to Kyohei Kokaji which put Fujitsu 22-21 up. Frontiers still had to defend for the Final 3 minutes 14 seconds of the match, and despite good 25 yard drive by Panasonic it was ended with Fujitsu’s Defensive Back Takutoshi Takaoka taking his second Interception of the day. Final Score: Fujitsu Frontiers 29 Panasonic Impulse 21 [References: 10] Note: For Rice Bowl Box-Score and Scorers please click on the game in Question (Fujitsu Frontiers 29 Panasonic Impulse 21) in the Rice Bowl Tournament Scoreboard Above.

About Japan X-League X1 Super 2022

The Japan X-League X1 Super is the top Division of American Football in Japan playing for the Rice Bowl, Japan’s equivalent of the Super Bowl. The Rice Bowl is in its’ 76th season this year, starting out as a University All-Star game between East and West in 1947. After 24 wins for Kanto and 12 for Kansai the Rice Bowl became in 1984 a contest between the University Champions and the Social (Club) Champions. Ritsumeikan University Panthers were in 2009 the last University Champions to win the Rice Bowl and in 2021 the Rice Bowl became the sole possession of the X-League after growing concern for the safety of the University players who were younger and less experienced than their Social counterparts, all of whom could boast American professionals in star positions. For 2022 the X-League X1 Super (the top division in Japanese American Football) added four new teams promoted from the X1 Area League – Asahi Beer Silver Star, Asahi Soft Drinks Club Challengers, Tainai Deers and Otonari Fukuoka Suns. The X1 Super was divided into two divisions of six (A and B) to accomodate the promoted teams.

REPORT

On February 11, 1981, James Foster witnessed an Indoor Soccer game at Madison Square Garden, and drew out the outline of an Indoor American Football field on a manilla envelope, using the same basic premise of a football field on a converted Ice Hockey rink. [2]

The first AFL test game was held on 27 April 1986 in Rockford, Illinois between the Rockford Metros and Chicago Politicians, and following positive public response the first “showcase game” in Chicago in front of 8,200 fans on February 27, 1987, where Miami Vice triumphed 33-30 over Chicago Bruisers. [2; 4-5]

About Arena Football

This version of American (or Gridiron) Football has become extremely popular in Mexico. Indoor Football, also known as Arena Football was developed in 1986 as an 8v8 form of Indoor American Football. After an initial few seasons where the game was developed with a 4 team league, a full seasons League with eventually over a dozen teams was developed in the 1990 which was considered by the Wall Street Journal to be a fifth major.

The Arena Football League over-expanded in the 2000s with a Minor League, and its importance (and number of teams) waned since it first experienced financial diffulties  in 2009, and it ceased operations after the 2019 season due to the legacy debt incurred. There is now, however, Indoor Football Leagues all over America, all of which would now be considered Minor League or Semi-Pro (AAA, AA, or even A)

Arena Indoor Football is played on a 50-yard field with two 8-yard endzones, and teams have 5 downs (attempts) to reach the endzone or the ball is turned over. 3 of those downs must be passing plays, making Indoor Football highly explosive and high scoring.

The main difference between Arena Football & Indoor Football is the rebound nets either side of the goalposts in Arena Football, which is the only part of the original patent given to the Arena Football League in 1989, that a subsequent ruling in 1998 ruled was copyright, the rest being Football already in other leagues.

Season Recap

Conference Championships

Oklahoma State Cowboys won the Big 12 Conference with an 8-1 record (there is no Conference Championship Game in the Big 12 as it has only one division of 10 Teams). The ACC (Atlantic Coast Conference) Championship Game pitted Atlantic Division Champions Wake Forest Demon Deacons against Coastal Division Champions Pittsburgh Panthers with the Pittsburgh College winning out 45-21. The Big Ten Conference Champions were Michigan Wolverines who defeated a surprising Iowa Hawkeyes in the Championship Game. Ohio State Buckeyes, one of the tradional powerhouses in College Football lost out on a tie-breaker to Michigan after both Colleges finished 8-1 in the East Division.

The Pacific-12 Conference Championship Game was a major surprise with Utah Utes, South Division Champions, winning by a huge 38-10 margin over favourites Oregon Ducks. The game every college football fan was waiting for, however, was the Southeastern Conference Championship game between perennial favourites Alabama Crimson Tide and the undefeated Georgia Bulldogs. The Athens, Georgia, College went in as favourites, meaning an unusual underdog position for the Tuscaloosa, Alabama, College. Alabama, however, showed why they are nearly always favourites with a 41-24 victory.

New Year Six Bowls

The Big New Year Six Bowls featured all five Power 5 Conference Champions, plus top Independent College Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Group 5 College Cincinnati Bearcats, American Athletic Conference Champions, and also Conference Runners-Up Georgia Bulldogs (SEC), Oregon Ducks (PAC-12) and Baylor Bears (Big 12), and high-ranking Ohio State Buckeyes (Columbus, Ohio) and Michigan State Spartans (perennial contenders and second and third respectively to Michigan Wolverines in the Big Ten East Division); and Mississippi Rebels (runners-up to Alabama in the SEC West Division).

The Four Non-College Football Playoff Bowls on New Years featured a 31-21 victory for Michigan State Spartans over Pittsburgh Panthers in the Peach Bowl in Atlanta, Georgia; a 37-35 victory for Oklahoma State Cowboys versus Notre Dame Fighting Irish in the Fiesta Bowl, in Glendale, Arizona; a 48-45 win for Ohio State Buckeyes in the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California versus Utah Utes; and a 21-7 triumph for Baylor Bears over Ole Miss Rebels in the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans, Louisiana.

College Football Playoff Semi-Finals (New Years)

With Oregon Ducks shock loss to Utah Utes and Oklahoma State Cowboys not having played a Championship Game, Cincinnati Bearcats became the first Group 5 College to appear in the College Football Playoff, ranked number 4, they were pitted against Alabama Crimson Tide, losing 27-6 in the Cotton Bowl in Arlington, Texas. The other Semi-Final between SEC runners-up Georgia Bulldogs and Michigan Wolverines, the Big Ten Champions, was a convincing 34-11 victory for Georgia.

2022 College Football Playoff National Championship

Going in as favourites this time Alabama Crimson Tide were hoping for a repeat of the SEC Championship Game where they defeated Georgia Bulldogs. Yet again, however, the underdogs pulled off the upset win with Georgia Bulldogs triumphing 33-18 versus Alabama at Lucas Oil Stadium, Indianapolis, Indiana to win the 2022 College Football Playoff National Championship. [References: 2]

It was the Bulldogs first National Championship since 1980 and came with a superlative fourth-quarter performance where the Bulldogs scored 20 unanswered points after being 9-6 down at halftime and five points down heading into the fourth quarter (13-18) . Touchdowns for Georgia came from Zamir White (1 yard run), Adonai Mitchell and Brock Bowers (both receptions), and Kelee Ringo (a 79-yard interception return). [References: 2]

A Week and a half before the start of the MLFB inaugural season, which was 6 years in the planning, the League delayed the start of the season due to a “funding delay” with players told to make their own way home and out of training camp in Mobile, Alabama. By the 1st August the League was shut down. [References: 2]

Report

The 2000 NWFL Championship Game II was won by Houston Energy 39-7 versus the inaugural 1999 Champions New England Storm from Providence, Rhode Island. Houston had started off the 2000 season with two big losses to Central Division’s Colorado Valkyries (0-58) and Minnesota Vixens (8-30) in weeks 3 and 4 after they had defeated Austin Rage 52-25 and 30-20 to start the season. By the time the playoffs had come around the Energy were ready for revenge. After another victory over Austin Rage and then Oklahoma City Wildcats in weeks 5 and 6 Houston had finished the regular season as West Division Champions on 4-2. Minnesota Vixens had won the Central Division on 5-0, one game ahead of Colorado Valkyries, while in the South, Daytona Beach Barracudas went undefeated on 6-0, well ahead of Miami Fury (3-4) and Tampa Tempest (0-6). [References: S1-S16]

The East Division saw a battle between New England Storm and New York Sharks, with both finishing the regular season on 4-2. The Storm then won the National Conference Wildcard Game 10-7 versus the Sharks in Providence, while Houston gained revenge for their earlier heavy loss to Colorado, winning 13-0 in the American Conference Wildcard Game. The American Conference Championship saw Minnesota Vixens suffer their first loss of the season, 14-35 to Houston Energy, and likewise in the National Conference, Daytona Beach Barracudas fell to their first reverse, 26-29 in overtime to New England Storm, in what was instantly the greatest game yet in WPFL history. The WPFL Championship Game II, played in Houston, Texas, went to the Energy 39-7 versus the New England Storm. [References: S1-S16]

About the WPFL 2000

The Women’s Professional Football League (WPFL) of 2000 to 2007 was the fourth Professional Women’s Football League in USA. The original Women’s Professional Football League operated out of Cleveland in Ohio from 1965 to 1971. The WPFL I played in Toledo, Cleveland, Toronto, Buffalo and Pittsburgh. By 1974 the National Women’s Football League (NWFL) was formed including teams such as Toledo Troopers, Dallas Bluebonnets, Forth Worth Shamrocks, Columbus Pacesetters, Los Angeles Dandelions, California Mustangs and Detroit Demons. In 1978 the California-based NWFL franchises broke away forming the Western States Women’s Professional Football League (WSWPFL) and by 1988 the NWFL had further split into two organisations: the Toledo-based NWFL and the Women’s Tackle Football Association (WTFA) based in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Professional Women’s Football died out after that year in USA, but in Germany and Australia the Professional Women’s Leagues were only starting up. [References: H-1]

By 1999 the time had come for a new Women’s Professional Football League. The WPFL II held a “No Limits” Barnstorming Tour which was won by New England Storm. The 2000 WPFL was the first full season of the League, and featured 11 teams in four divisions: A Central Division consisting of Minnesota Vixens and Colorado Valkyries; a West Division comprising Oklahoma City Wildcats and two Texas teams, Houston Energy and Austin Rage; a South Division with three teams in Florida, Daytona Beach Barracudas, Miami Fury and Tampa Tempest and an East Division with two teams in New York State, the Buffalo-based New York Galaxy and the New York City-based New York Sharks as well as Providence, Rhode Island based team, the New England Storm. Toronto Argonauts defeated Montreal Alouettes 20-19 to go top of the Eastern Division on 1-0. The two Inter-Division games saw Ottawa REDBLACKS fall to 0-2 after losing to defending Champions Winnipeg Blue Bombers 19-12. Winnipeg improved to 2-0 with the win as Calgary Stampeders joined the Blue Bombers on 2-0 with a 33-30 victory over Hamilton Tiger-Cats, who fell to 0-2. The Western Division match-up saw Saskatchewan Roughriders also move to 2-0 with a 26-16 triumph over Edmonton Elks, who lost their second game. [References: 2]

Week 3 (24-26 June 2022)

Three Inter-Division match-ups saw Montreal Alouettes improve to 1-2 with a shock 37-13 victory at Saskatchewan Roughriders who lost for the first time in 2022; British Columbia Lions improve to 3-0 with a huge 44-3 defeat of the 0-2 Toronto Argonauts; and Winnipeg Blue Bombers also improved to 3-0 as they defeated Hamilton Tiger-Cats 26-12. [References: 2]

Weeks 4-8 (2-31 July 2022)

Winnipeg Blue Bombers marched on to 8-0 with five victories in July – at Toronto (23-22), at BC Lions (43-22), versus Calgary (26-19), at Edmonton (24-10) and at Calgary (35-28). Their nearest challengers in the West Division were British Columbia Lions on 5-1 who had defeated Ottawa 34-31 on the road and Hamilton Tiger-Cats 17-12 in Vancouver and Saskatchewan 32-17 in Regina. Calgary Stampeders were in third on 4-2, with a 49-6 victory at Edmonton. The difference between the teams was Winnipeg’s victories over the Stampeders (twice) and Lions (once). Saskatchewan Roughriders trailed on 4-4 but were still in with a shot at a crossover playoff spot with wins versus Montreal Alouettes (41-20) and Ottawa REDBLACKS (28-13) before three losses in a row to Toronto (twice) and BC Lions (once). Edmonton were at the foot of the Standings with a 2-5 record, although had defeated Montreal Alouettes 32-31 in week 6.

The Toronto Argonauts were leading the East Division on 3-2 following two wins in two weeks versus Saskatchewan Roughriders (30-24 and 31-21), while Montreal Alouettes and Hamilton Tiger-Cats were both still in the running for a playoff spot, both standing on 2-5. Montreal had defeated Ottawa 40-33 and Hamilton Tiger-Cats had gained wins over Ottawa (25-23) and Montreal (24-17), the latter a crucial game for the TiCats. Ottawa REDBLACKS languished in last place in the East on 0-6. On 31 July the previous winless Ottawa REDBLACKS created a shock with a 23-13 home victory over division leading Toronto Argonauts. [References: 2]

Week 9 (5-7 August 2022)

Winnipeg Blue Bombers remained on course for a three-peat with a 35-20 defeat of Montreal Alouettes who fell to 2-6, as the Blue Bombers marched on to a ninth consecutive victory while also remaining unbeaten. Calgary Stampeders improved to 5-2 with a 17-3 victory over Ottawa REDBLACKS who despite being only 1-7 were still only one game off a playoff spot. Toronto Argonauts extended their lead in the East with a 34-20 victory over Hamilton TigerCats who dropped to 2-6 as the Argos improved to 4-3. The final game of the weekend was a huge 46-14 defeat of Edmonton Elks by BC Lions as the Lions improved to 6-1 and the Elks, still not realistically out of a crossover playoff spot, fell to 2-6. [References: 2]

Week 10 (12-14 August 2022)

Winnipeg Blue Bombers (9-1) were defeated for the first time in the 2022 season after losing 17-20 in overtime to Montreal Alouettes who improved to 3-6. Elsewhere BC Lions (7-1) kept up the pace with Winnipeg after a thrilling 41-40 victory at Calgary Stampeders (5-3). Hamilton Tiger-Cats also improved to 3-6 in the weaker East Division after winning 34-27 at home to Toronto Argonauts (4-4). Saskatchewan Roughriders (5-4) remained on course for a crossover playoff spot with a 34-23 victory over the 2-7 Edmonton Elks. [References: 2]

Week 11 (20-21 August 2022)

With Winnipeg Blue Bombers not playing, the British Columbia Lions took the opportunity to close the gap on the West Division leaders to half a game with a 28-10 victory at Saskatchewan Roughriders, who despite falling to 5-5 were still in with a good chance of making the crossover playoff spot. Calgary Stampeders improved to 6-3 with a 22-19 victory at Toronto Argonauts meaning with the Argos on 4-5 every team in the East Division was now on a losing record. Montreal Alouettes defeated Hamilton Tiger-Cats 29-28 in another close game as the Als improved to 4-6 and the TiCats dropped to 3-7. In the other game between the two cellar-dwellers Edmonton Elks improved to 3-7 with a 30-12 triumph at the 1-8 Ottawa REDBLACKS. [References: 2]

Week 12 (26-28 August 2022)

In the East Division a win for Toronto Argonauts (37-20) over Tadhg Leader’s former team Hamilton Tiger-Cats put them back in sole possession of first place on 5-5 with Montreal Alouettes (4-6) on a bye week. Ottawa REDBLACKS (2-8) gained a second victory of the season, 25-18 at fellow strugglers Edmonton Elks (3-8) putting Edmonton well out of the West Division running. Saskatchewan Roughriders had an important 23-16 victory at B.C. Lions which put the Regina team on 6-5 and improving their chances of making the playoffs and delivering a blow to the Vancouver-based team’s hopes of a division championship after Winnipeg Blue Bombers won 31-29 at home in Manitoba versus Calgary Stampeders. Winnipeg were now on 10-1, a game and a half ahead of B.C. Lions while the Stampeders were on 6-4. [References: 2]

Week 13 (3-5 September 2022)

Ottawa REDBLACKS caused a minor shock in defeating Montreal Alouettes 38-24 in Week 13, improving to 3-8 and in the process markedly improving their playoff chances. The REDBLACKS were 1-8 two weeks previously and were now just one game behind Montreal (4-7) in the race for the second automatic playoff spot in the Eastern Division. Toronto Argonauts triumphed 28-8 at Hamilton Tiger-Cats to go 6-5 at the top of the East. Hamilton dropped to last place on 3-9.

The West Division was still Winnipeg’s to lose as the two-time defending champions improved to 11-1 with a close 20-18 victory at Saskatchewan Roughriders, with the ‘riders dropping to 6-6 but still in a crossover playoff spot. In the other game Calgary Stampeders improved to 7-4 after winning 26-18 at home to Alberta rivals Edmonton Elks who were adrift at the bottom of the West on 3-9. B.C. Lions who had a bye week were still in second on 8-2. [References: 2]

Week 14 (10-11 September 2022)

Montreal Alouettes bounced back from a shock defeat to Ottawa REDBLACKS to cause one the big upsets of the season themselves, triumphing 31-10 versus the British Columbia Lions. It was only B.C.’s third defeat of the season, and means Winnipeg Blue Bombers are virtually guaranteed the division title with seven weeks remaining after the Bombers went four wins in front with a 54-20 defeat of Saskatchewan Roughriders, who dropped to 6-7 on the year. Calgary Stampeders topped the Blue Bombers in the scoring stakes the next day however winning 56-20 at Edmonton Elks to improve to 8-4 and put a bit of light between themselves and the Regina-based ‘Riders for third place in the West. The Elks fell to 3-10 and well out of contention for the playoffs with the loss. Toronto Argonauts maintained their two-game cushion on Montreal at the top of the East Division after they won 24-19 at Ottawa who dropped to 3-9 and increasingly likely to fail to make the playoffs. As things stood after an average of 12 gamers played from 18 in total, Winnipeg Blue Bombers had clinched a playoff berth with no team as yet eliminated. [References: 2]

Week 15 (17-18 September 2022)

The big news in week 12 was Winnipeg’s second loss only all season, 31-48 at Hamilton Tiger-Cats, which left the Blue Bombers on 12-2 and the TiCats on 4-9 back in the playoff hunt. In other matches Saskatchewan Roughriders also had a shock defeat, 24-26 at home to Edmonton Elks, leaving the ‘riders on 6-8 and Edmonton on 4-10, still unbelievably mathematically still not eliminated from the playoffs. In a big game in the West Division B.C. Lions won 31-29 at Calgary Stampeders, leaving the Lions (9-3) with an edge for second place over the Stamps (8-5) [References: 2]

Week 16 (24-25 September 2022)

Montreal (6-7) kept the pressure on Toronto Argonauts in the East Division with a 23-16 victory at home to Hamilton Tiger-Cats (4-10). The Argos (8-5) won 45-15 at Ottawa REDBLACKS (3-10). In the West Division the only game played was between second placed British Columbia Lions (9-4) and third placed Calgary Stampeders (9-5) who moved level with B.C. on 18 Points with a 25-11 win in Vancouver. [References: 2] Winnipeg Blue Bombers, B.C. Lions, Calgary Stampeders and Toronto Argonauts had all with the weekends results clinched Playoff Berths. [References: 2]

Week 17 (1-2 October 2022)

Winnipeg Blue Bombers (13-2) continued tearing up the field, defeating the 6-9 Saskatchewan Roughriders 31-13. The Bombers were still not assured of the Western Division Championship, though, as B.C. Lions improved to 10-4 with a 34-19 victory over Ottawa REDBLACKS (3-11) and Calgary Stampeders (10-5) won 29-2 versus Toronto Argonauts (8-6). The Argos were joined in the Playoffs in the Eastern Division by Montreal Alouettes, who improved to 7-7 with a 25-18 triumph over Edmonton Elks (4-11). With only one playoff place remaining, and both Division Championships yet to be decided, it was all to play for with four weeks remaining in the regular season. [References: 2]

Week 18 (8-10 October 2022)

Hamilton Tiger-Cats (5-10) defeated Saskatchewan 18-14 to put some pressure on the Roughriders (6-10) for the Crossover Playoff spot. Toronto Argonauts (9-6) won 23-20 at home to British Columbia Lions (10-5) which handed the Western Division title to Winnipeg Blue Bombers who improved to 14-2 after a huge 48-11 win versus Edmonton Elks (4-12). Meanwhile Ottawa REDBLACKS (4-11) won 24-18 at Montreal Alouettes (7-8) which meant the REDBLACKS were still not mathematically eliminated. [References: 2]

Week 19 (15-16 October 2022)

Montreal Alouettes defeated Ottawa REDBLACKS 34-30 to improve to 8-8 as Ottawa slipped to 4-12. Hamilton Tiger-Cats won 35-32 at Calgary Stampeders as they improved their chances of gaining the crossover playoff spot going to 6-10, level with Saskatchewan Roughriders who had a bye week. Calgary were now on 10-6, one game behind B.C. Lions who had a shock 40-32 victory over Winnipeg Blue Bombers who were on 14-3 with only their third loss in 2022. [References: 2-2B]

Week 20 (22-23 October 2022)

Despite a big second quarter where the REDBLACKS outscored the Tiger-Cats 21-0, Hamilton came back in the 4th Quarter to win 30-27 a move a step closer to the playoffs. A big second quarter where the B.C. Lions outscored the Edmonton Elks 17-0 was the difference between the teams as the Lions secured second place in the West Division with a 31-14 victory. Despite a fourth quarter comeback by the Als where Montreal scored 17 points the Toronto Argonauts held on for the win, defeating the Alouettes 24-23 to make sure of the East Division Championship. Saskatchewan Roughriders playoff chances were dealt an almost unrecoverable blow after the Calgary Stampeders outscored the ‘Riders in each of the first three quarters to secure a 32-21 win. [References: 2-2B]

Winnipeg Blue Bombers took a 14-0 first quarter lead and led the rest of the game as they finished the regular season with a franchise-record 15-3 record. B.C. Lions finish on 12-6. 21 First quarter points were enough for the Montreal Alouettes to see out a hard-earned victory over Division Champions Toronto Argonauts. Als finish season on 9-9 in second place in the East, Argos on 11-7 in first place. Hamilton Tiger-cats qualified for the cross-over spot in the playoffs with a 23-16 victory at Ottawa REDBLACKS. Ticats finish 8-10 and REDBLACKS 4-14. Calgary Stampeders had a 36-10 victory at home over the slumping Saskatchewan Roughriders to finish the season 12-6 in third place in the West as the ‘Riders finished 6-12. [References: 2-2C]

Montreal Alouettes headed to their first Eastern Final since 2014 after a first half performance against Hamilton Tiger-Cats where they outscored the Ti-Cats 22-6, prevailing 28-17 in the end. B.C. Lions progressed to the Western Final after a 30-16 victory over Calgary Stampeders in the Western Semi-Final [References: 2]

Toronto Argonauts advanced to the Grey Cup thanks to a First Quarter where the Argos outscored the Montreal Alouettes 14-3. Toronto never relinquished the lead.

In a game that almost everything, including a Rouge (S Flintoff) and a convert kick return (T Williams) for BC Lions and Winnipeg’s second-longest playoff punt return in History (92 yards by J Grant), Winnipeg advanced to the Grey Cup to attempt the three-peat. Winnipeg Blue Bombers 28 BC Lions 20 was the Final Score. [References: 2][See Individual Games for Scorers References]

A Ouellette (Two Rushing Touchdowns) and B Bede (Three Field Goals, Two Convert Kicks and One Rouge (Single) were the heroes for Toronto Argonauts scoring 12 points each, and accounting for all the Argos points between them as Toronto ended Winnipeg Blue Bombers dreams of a dynasty with a close 24-23 victory in Regina, Saskatchewan.

The reigning Grey Cup holders Winnipeg were hoping for a three-peat but went down to A Ouellette’s five yard touchdown run and B Bede’s successful convert kick with less than four minutes remaining. The Blue Bombers had scored through two touchdowns from Quarterback D Prukop and a 102-yard punt return for Touchdown by J Grant, the longest in Grey Cup history as well as a Field Goal and two successful Convert Kicks by M Liegghio, however it was not to be as the Double Blues of Toronto took home the 109th Grey Cup. Weekly Recaps

Week 1 (4-5 June 2022)

Newcomers to the European League of Football, Istanbul Rams were narrowly defeated 38-40 by Cologne Centurions. Rhein Fire, were another new team to ELF, although previously a team named Rhein Fire were in the National Football League Europe League in the 1990s and 2000s. Fire defeated Frankfurt Galaxy 29-26. The other two expansion teams, moving up from the Austrian League and the Big 6 Eurobowl were Raiders Tirol from Innsbruck and Vienna Vikings, who clashed in Innsbruck with Vikings prevailing 29-23.

In other games Barcelona Dragons improved dramatically over last season, winning 38-9 at Stuttgart Surge, while Berlin Thunder were no match for Hamburg Sea Devils, losing 18-43 in the German capital. Meanwhile the sole Slavic team in the ELF, Panthers Wroclaw, won 34-27 at home to Leipzig Kings. [References: S-1 and Individual References in Games]

Week 2 (11-12 June 2022)

Panthers Wroclaw sat atop the Northern Division with a 28-25 victory at Stuttgart Surge who fell to 0-2 in the Central Division. Berlin Thunder gained their first win in the Northern Division with a 41-7 defeat of Istanbul Rams, who were left looking for their first win. Hamburg Sea Devils suffered their first loss of the season going down 21-24 to the Barcelona Dragons, who were top of the Southern Division on 2-0 along with Cologne Centurions and Rhein Fire. The Centurions had a narrow 49-46 victory over Raiders Tirol, who were still looking for a first win in the Central Division while Rhein Fire defeated Northern Division cellar dwellers Leipzig Kings 28-17. The Central Division appeared already to be Vienna Vikings to lose after they moved two games ahead of all three other teams with a 30-10 victory over fellow Central Division team, the Frankfurt Galaxy. Weeks 3-4 (18-26 June 2022)

By the end of June 2022, Hamburg Sea Devils were sitting on top of the ELF North Division with two more wins in weeks 3 and 4 over Leipzig Kings (14-0) and Panthers Wroclaw (26-23). The Panthers loss to Hamburg was their second consecutive loss after starting the season with two victories. The reverse to the Sea Devils followed a heavy week 3 loss to Frankfurt Galaxy (13-47). Berlin Thunder also lost two in a row in weeks 3 and 4 – 28-16 to Raiders Tirol and 15-19 at Leipzig in what was the Kings first victory of the season following defeats in each of their first three games. [References: S-1]

The Central Division included not just one of only two undefeated teams after week 4 in Vienna Vikings, but also the streaking Frankfurt Galaxy and Raiders Tirol who both won twice on the trot after losing their opening two games. Vienna’s weeks 3 and 4 triumph’s were 42-13 at Stuttgart Surge and 49-0 versus Istanbul Rams. In addition to Frankfurt and Tirol’s earlier mentioned week 3 victories over Wroclaw and Berlin respectively, the teams also won 48-12 versus Cologne Centurions (Frankfurt) and 33-0 versus Stuttgart Surge in Innsbruck (Tirol). Stuttgart meanwhile were still looking to break their duck. [References: S-1]

The Southern Division was led by Barcelona Dragons, also on 4-0 after narrow wins versus Cologne Centurions (34-32) and Rhein Fire (17-13). The losses were both Cologne’s and Rhein’s first of the season after starting 2-0 and 3-0 respectively. Cologne slipped up in their next game also at Frankfurt, while Rhein’s 42-12 week 3 victory over Istanbul Rams set up the mouth-watering week 4 clash with Barcelona in Catalonia. Istanbul Rams, like Stuttgart Surge were still looking for their first win. [References: S-1]

Weeks 5-9 (July 2022)

Hamburg Sea Devils winning streak continued to 6 games as they led the EFL Northern Division on 7-1. Berlin Thunder put together a four-game winning streak to go from 1-3 to 5-3 and increase their chances of making the playoffs behind Hamburg, while Panthers Wroclaw slipped to 3-5 and Leipzig Kings 2-6. [References: S-1]

In the Central Division, Vienna Vikings remained undefeated on 8-0 with a crucial 29-13 victory at home to Austrian rivals Raiders Tirol putting them three games ahead of both the Alpen team and Frankfurt Galaxy who were both on 5-3. Stuttgart Surge were struggling on 0-8 in a Division with three of the toughest teams. [References: S-1]

Barcelona Dragons topped the Southern Division after week 9 on 6-2 and Rhein Fire were in second despite a two-game losing streak. Cologne Centurions were suffering a six-game losing streak after starting the season 2-0 while Istanbul Rams picked up their first ever win, but were still languishing in last place on 1-7. [References: S-1]

Week 11 (13-14 August 2022)

After a break week for the weekend of 6-7 August, there was a major upset when Frankfurt Galaxy (6-3) defeated Vienna Vikings 42-8 in what was the Vikings first loss of the season. Raiders Tirol joined Frankfurt on 6-3 in the toughest Division with a 44-3 victory in Innsbruck over Stuttgart Surge, who were still looking for their first win. [References: S-1]

The Northern Division saw Hamburg Sea Devils (59-0 winners over Leipzig Kings) and Berlin Thunder (29-12 victors over Panthers Wroclaw) continue their winning streaks, now seven games and five games respectively as Panthers and Leipzig were eliminated from the Playoffs. [References: S-1]

In the Southern Division Barcelona Dragons (7-2) and Rhein Fire (5-4) extended their lead over Cologne Centurions (2-7) and Istanbul Rams with 37-15 and 50-32 triumphs respectively. [References: S-1]

Week 12 (20-21 August 2022)

Hamburg Sea Devils (9-1) wrapped up the Northern Conference with a 39-17 victory at home to nearest rivals Berlin Thunder (6-4) while Panthers Wroclaw (4-6) defeated Leipzig Kings (2-8) 41-37 in a close game which meant very little for either team at this stage of the season other than pride. [References: S-1]

The Central Division was still up for grabs after Vienna Vikings (9-1) rebounded from their heavy loss at Frankfurt with a 37-22 victory at Istanbul (1-9). Neasest rivals and fellow Austrian team Raiders Tirol (7-3) stayed on their heels with a 45-20 victory at Cologne Centurions (2-8). [References: S-1]

Meanwhile Barcelona Dragons (8-2) continued to set the pace in the Southern Conference with a 62-8 victory at the winless Stuttgart Surge. Rhein Fire (6-4) were still not out of the running however, with a 23-21 victory at Frankfurt Galaxy (6-4), the latter coming back down to earth after their massive win versus the undefeated Vienna Vikings the previous weekend. [References: S-1]

Week 13 (27-28 August 2022)

Hamburg Sea Devils clinched the Northern Division title with a 17-0 victory at home to Panthers Wroclaw leaving the Sea Devils on 10-1 and the Panthers out of the running on 4-7. Berlin Thunder kept their hopes of a playoff place alive, improving to 7-4 with a 38-14 defeat of Istanbul Rams (1-10) and Leipzig Kings picked up their third win of the season 38-0 at Stuttgart Surge (0-11)

The Central Division title was won by Vienna Vikings (10-1) after they defeated Barcelona Dragons (8-3) 24-18 in a battle of the Central and Southern Division leaders. The Vikings were helped by Frankfurt Galaxy’s narrow 36-33 victory over Raiders Tirol in Central Germany, meaning both teams were now on 7-4 along with Berlin Thunder and Rhein Fire in the race for Playoff places.

In the Southern Division Rhein Fire kept their outside chance of a Division title alive, moving to within a game of Barcelona Dragons after a high-scoring 59-37 triumph in Cologne over the Centurions (2-9).

The race for the Final Playoff spots now moved to the final week with Hamburg Sea Devils traveling to Barcelona to play the Dragons, Berlin Thunder entertaining Raiders Tirol, and Rhein Fire at home to Leipzig Kings. Frankfurt Galaxy play Stuttgart Surge, Vienna Vikings play at Panthers Wroclaw and Cologne Centurions visit Istanbul Rams to wrap-up the 2022 Regular Season. [References: S-1]

Week 14 (3-4 September 2022)

The regular season finished with Northern Division champions Hamburg Sea Devils (11-1) winning 24-21 at Southern Division champions Barcelona Dragons (8-4). Second place in the Northern Division went to Berlin Thunder (7-5) despite their 10-37 loss to Central Division runners-up and wild-card playoff qualifiers Raiders Tirol (8-4). Tirol sneaked into the playoffs on a tie-breaker ahead of Frankfurt Galaxy who also finished on 8-4 after a 37-13 victory in Frankfurt over Stuttgart Surge who lost all 12 games in 2022. Vienna Vikings were Central Division champions even though they were shocked 42-6 by Panthers Wroclaw (5-7) in Poland, only the Vikings second defeat of the season, both of which were heavy defeats away from home in Austria. Leipzig Kings finished the season on 4-8 in the Northern Division after a close 34-31 victory over Rhein Fire (7-5) in Dusseldorf and Cologne Centurions (3-9) won 43-30 at Istanbul Rams (1-11) in a battle of two Southern Division strugglers. The Playoff qualifiers then were Hamburg Sea Devils (11-1, Northern Champions), Vienna Vikings (10-2, Central Champions), Barcelona Dragons (8-4, Southern Champions) and Raiders Tirol (8-4, Wildcard qualifiers). [References: S-1]

Playoffs (10-11 September 2022)

Vienna Vikings overcame their set-back in the final week of regular season play to shutout the Barcelona Dragons 19-0 to advance to the European League of Football’s second Championship Game. There the Vikings were to meet Hamburg Sea Devils who won 19-7 versus Raiders Tirol thus preventing an All-Austrian showdown. The two teams have yet to meet in 2022 with Hamburg losing only one of their 13 games during the season and Vienna only two games defeated.

ELF Championship Game II (25 September 2022)

Vienna Vikings dominated the Hamburg Sea Devils 27-15 in the Second ever European League of Football Championship Game. The Vikings held the Sea Devils top rusher Glen Toonga to a total of minus five yards in the First Half as Vienna’s Quarterback Jackson Erdmann completing almost all passes. [Reference: S-2]

About the European League of Football 2022

In some ways a resurrection of the old National Football League sponsored World League of American Football / National Football League Europe League, the European League of Football is the latest top-level Professional American Football League spanning the continent of Europe. The League resurrected many of the old WLAF and NFLE team names, such as Barcelona Dragons (Catalonia), Frankfurt Galaxy, Berlin Thunder, Hamburg Sea Devils, Rhein Fire and Cologne Centurions, as well as adding new teams Stuttgart Surge and Leipzig Kings (all Germany), and promoting European National League and previously members of other smaller European Professional Leagues, Raiders Tirol and Vienna Vikings (both Austria), Istanbul Rams (Turkey), and Panthers Wroclaw (Poland).
