Belfast Blitzers 24 Dublin Celts 20 – Belfast Blitzers became the first Irish team to ever defeat the Dublin Celts when Martin Press ran in from closerange in the dying minutes to snatch victory at Cooke Rugby Club. The Match was the second leg of the Capital Cup, which was won on aggregate by the Celts after their 46-7 win earlier in the season, however, the Blitzers were overjoyed with their achievement. The Celts took the lead with an early touchdown, but the Blitzers hit back with touchdown from wide receiver Ivan Smith, which was converted to give them a 7-6 lead. Derek McCord turned the match in Belfast’s favour with an 85-yard Punt return, with extra point again good, to put the Blitzers 14-6 up. The Celts hit back with two touchdowns to go 20-16 up but the Belfast defense held on for seven minutes before Press scored the decisive Touchdown. [Reference: 15]

Report

The Blitzers won the IAFA Championship on points difference from the Dublin Celts as they both finished on the same record. They also won the NIAFA Championship, which included all matches played except the ones against the Dublin Celts.

At the end of the season there was a separate Shamrock Bowl arranged, which was by invite. The Dublin Celts & Belfast Blitzers were both invited but the Blitzers as both League & Cup Champions declined to take part as they considered themselves already champions. The Craigavon Cowboys took their place and beat the Celts 6-2, with a late Nigel Trimble Touchdown run.

About

There were two separate Leagues in 1986: The Northern Ireland American Football Association, where each of the Northern teams played each other twice. Belfast Blitzers won all of their matches. There was also an Irish American Football Association where each of the NIAFA games counted as well as a Home & Away series for each NIAFA team with the Dublin Celts. The NIAFA League was a League on paper only, though there were medals awarded to the winning Belfast Blitzers team.

Report

This article takes a look at how the DV8 Development League Standings would have looked if there were separate standings kept for 1st Teams and 2nds teams as in the IAFL Division 2 in 2003. In general 1st Teams played a full schedule of 6-8 games and 2nds teams a half shedule of 2-3 games.

Tullamore Phoenix won the 1st teams title using this method in 2010 and 2011 as they did the overall Development League title those years. Drogheda Lightning had the best record in 2012 overall but there was no clear winner with four teams on 4 wins including Trim Bulldogs victory over Drogheda in the Moneygall American Festival which was not counted in the standings.

The unofficial 2nds title could have been shared between Craigavon Cowboys 2nds and Carrickfergus Knights 2nds in 2010 and 2011, with both teams undefeated, and then in 2012 Belfast Trojans 2nds shade it over Craigavon Cowboys 2nds with a recordof 4-0-1 compared to the Cowboys 2nds 4-1-0.

About

The DV8 Development League was an 8-a-side fully kitted league and was set up in 2008 with two main aims: (1) To give teams in the Irish Regions a chance to play Competitive Football while building up their kit & player numbers and (2) to enable 2nds teams of bigger IAFL teams in the main league to field 2nds teams.

From 2008-2009 each team played a full schedule (6 games in 2008 & 8 games in 2009) and from 2010-2012 teams from the Irish Regions played a full schedule and 2nds teams played a half or three-quarter schedule.

In 2013 the League became a full 11-a-side second Division known as the IAFL 1 Conference. The DV8 format was kept for a third level over the Winter months of 2012-13 (playing in Blitzes) and following formation of the IAFL 2 Conference in 2014, the format was used for the Junior Kitted League.

Shamrock Classic Dublin – Navy Midshipmen 27 Notre Dame Fighting Irish 54 Box Score and Match Report 2 November 1996

Croke Park, 2 November 1996

Navy Midshipmen 27 Notre Dame Fighting Irish –while this was officially a Navy Home Game, the Midshipmen’s Head Coach said it did not feel like that as the Notre Dame Fighting Irish – the Irish Roman Catholic College in South Bend, Indiana, near Chicago – left the United States of America to play a Football game for only the second time ever. The win for the Irish gave the legendary Lou Holtz – the most successful College Football coach ever – a send-off that was worth remembering in his last year in charge, as he retired at the end of the season.

The Irish coped well with the Midshipmen’s ground game, shutting down Quarterback Ben Fay and Option Quarterback Chris McCoy for almost no yardage eeverytime they kept the ball to run at the Notre Dame defense, even though Navy’s aerial attack was proving successful. After a slow start Marc Edwards ran in from 5 yards out in the first quarter to give Notre Dame the go-ahead score. In the second quarter Pete Chrydlewicz received a toichdown pass from the promising Ron Powlus at Quarterback, a star in College Football circles in the USA, and Autry Denson, the big running back, added one from 33 yards out with 30 seconds to go in the half, as Navy could only manage one score – a run from Omar Nelson – leaving the score 21-7 at the half.

In the second half Renaldo Wynn scored a 24-yard Interception Return off of a long 50-yard pass from the Navy QB to put Notre Dame 28-7 up, a score that the Navy Coach said broke the backs of the Midshipmen. After that Notre Dame put up four more scores – two from Marc Edwards and one each from Autry Denson and Jamie Spencer – as Navy only managed three scores and the game ended 54-27 to Notre Dame.

Commenting after the game Lou Holtz said next time they might seek a Garda Escort as they spent so much time in traffic, saying it was worse even than New York’s, which he thought was bad, and remarked that Irish people must spend half their lives in their cars. Following the win Quarterback Ron Powlus, and Running Back Marc Edwards headed out to Dublin’s main entertainment district, Temple Bar, where they sample Guinness and were mobbed by girls who had travelled over from America to catch the game.

Notre Dame Fighting Irish, the Irish Roman Catholic College in South Bend, Indiana, near Chicago, finished in 12th place in legendary College Football Coach, Lou Holtz’s last season in charge. Report

Florida Gators won the 1996 Division 1A NCAA Football title with a defeat of rivals Florida State Seminoles in the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans. Ohio State Buckeyes won the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, defeating Arizona State Sun Devils to take second place in the end-of-season polls.

Unlike most other College Sports in the National Collegiate Athletic Association there was no National Bowl Game at the end of season, but a series of four Big Bowl Games in each quarter of the country for the Champions of the Top Conferences, with an end-of-season poll by the Nations Top Sport Journalists determining who wins the National Championship.

Notre Dame Fighting Irish, the Irish Roman Catholic College in South Bend, Indiana, near Chicago, finished in 12th place in legendary College Football Coach, Lou Holtz’s last season in charge. The Fighting Irish were not satisfied with the cost/payout relationship in the lesser bowls at the end of the season, and despite numerous invites to Bowl Games, did not take part in any, casting a lull over Holtz’s last year in charge.
