Hypothetical Re-Alignment of Professional Football Leagues 2070

With Texan Independence, the four Texas teams: Dallas Cowboys, Houston Texans, Houston Oilers, and the relocated San Antonio Jaguars join the LFA (Liga de Futbol Americano) bringing the Mexican Professional League up to 16 teams. The Texan teams are replaced in the NFL by Allegheny Athletics – a revival of the first Professional American Football team in Pittsburgh, now representing West Virginia; the Watertown Red & Black, the oldest continuously-operated Professional Football team in USA, based in upstate New York, replacing the Buffalo Bills who have moved to Toronto; and the moving of Montreal Alouettes to the NFL. With 16 Teams each in the NFC. AFC, LFA and WNFC (Women’s League), the JSL (Japan Super League) and CFL (Canadian Football League) form a loose alliance. The ELF (European League of Football goes up to 16 teams with the readdition of Scottish Claymores.

Recap NFL 2021

Los Angeles Rams won their second ever NFL Super Bowl title and their first as a Los Angeles team on February 13th 2021 after defeating Cincinnati Bengals 23-20 at SoFi Stadium in downtown Los Angeles in what was effectively a home game for the Rams.

Quarterback Matthew Stafford and Tackle Aaron Donald starred for the team as they came from behind to win in the last few minutes. The Rams went 0-3 in the preseason, and looked destined to finish behind early pacesetters Arizona Cardinals in the NFC West, but overhauled the Glendale team in the last few weeks.

They then defeated  the Cardinals 34-11 in the Wildcard Playoffs, Tampa Bay Buccaneers 30-27 in the Divisional Playoffs, in what was to be Buccaneers legendary Quarterback Tom Brady’s last game, and then downed the San Francisco 49ers 20-17 in the Conference Championship Game.

Los Angeles Rams took the lead in the first quarter through Matthew Stafford connecting with Odell Beckham Jr for a 22 yard touchdown, but in a defensive battle during the first quarter the Cincannati Bengals could not convert a great one handed catch by Ja’Marr Chase in the red zone, and had to settle for a Field Goal in the last minute of the first quarter leaving the score 7-3 to the Rams at the whistle. End of the 1st Quarter: Los Angeles Rams 7 Cincinnati Bengals 3 Another great catch by Odell Beckham Jr brought the Rams into the redzone in the second quarter. On the next play Cooper Kupp caught the ball unmarked in the corner of the endzone from Stafford for a 13-3 lead. The point after snap was mishandled by Hecker and recovered by the Bengals. The Bengals responded with a deep pass from Joe Burrow to Mixon to within 11 yards. Two plays later Higgins caught a TD pass in the  endzone from Joe Mixon, the first TD pass by Mixon in the NFL in five years, to bring the Bengals to within 3 points. Towards the end of the half, Odell Beckham Jr had to leave the game with a knee injury while trying to catch the ball over the middle unmarked, a big blow to the Rams. With two minutes to go, Stafford, under pressure from the Bengals three-man rush threw deep to the endzone to Jefferson, a risky pass which was intercepted by Jesse Bates in the endzone for a big turnover for Cincinnati. Cincinnati’s next drive ended with Burrow being sacked, forcing the Bengals to punt. The Rams had 30 seconds to go deep, but after three deep passes were forced to punt and the Bengals took the knee with 6 seconds to go. Halftime: Los Angeles Rams 13 Cincinnati Bengals 10 12 seconds into the third quarter a 75 yard touchdown pass from Joe Burrow to Tee Higgins put the Bengals 17-13 up although as facemask penalty against the Bengals was missed by the officials. 10 seconds later the Bengals immediately intercepted a Stafford pass on the next drive as the momentum shifted suddenly to the Bengals. The Bengals made a risky 4th and 1 conversion which paid off on the Rams 20 yard line on the next drive, but as big play by Donald who sacked Burrow on the 20 yard line left the Bengals on 4th and 12. Taking the Field Goal, the Bengals rookie kicker Evan McPherson put them 20-13 up from the 38 yard line. The Rams settled for a 51 yard Field Goal on the next drive after a trick play on third down failed. Stafford limped out of the game with 3 minutes left in the 3rd quarter after the Bengals had been put under pressure in another blow for the Rams. Awuzie had a minute earlier been injured for the Bengals defense, which was significant as he was the Bengals best player all season. Burrow was sacked five times in two series after just the one sack all game, forcing the Bengals to punt with one minute to go in the third quarter. End of 3rd Quarter Los Angeles Rams 16 Cincinnati Bengals 20. Burrow limped off at the beginning of the fourth quarter after being sacked for the seventh time. The following Rams drive was a quick 3 and out forcing them to punt. Trying to protect Burrow, the Bengals took to the running game. Chris Evans caught a first down on the next drive for Cincinnati. Tyler Boyd dropped a crucial pass on 3rd and 9 preparing for the hit and taking his eyes off the ball, having not dropped a pass all season. Bengals punted and the Rams took over with a fair catch. With less than six minutes left in the game the pressure was on Matthew Stafford who had the most fourth quarter comebacks in the NFL in 2021. On 4th and 1 the Rams Head Coach Sean McVay made a big call going for first down which paid off. Another big first down was made at the Bengal 49 yard line with under 4 minutes to go. Kupp caught a big pass on the 23 yard line as the Rams went for the go ahead touchdown. Akers took the ball up the middle for a first and 10 on the 8 yard line with 2 minutes to go. Rams failed on 3rd and goal, but a holding penalty was called on the Bengals, giving the Rams an automatic first down. Stafford threw to Kupp in the endzone on the next play, however two flags on the play offset each other meant repeat first own. More flags on the next play were called on the Bengals, putting the ball on the one yard line. Stafford tried a quarterback sneak on first down for no yards. Cincinnati took a time out at 1:29. 2nd and Goal Kupp catches the ball in the endzone for a 23-20 Rams lead. Cincinnati took over at the 25 yard line with 1:25 and two timeouts left. Bengals gained 17 yards on the next play. Boyd caught the ball on the 49 yard line with 1 minute left. Burrow went deep on the next play but was unsuccessful. 48 seconds left. Cincinnati tried running on 3rd and 1 and gained no yards. 4th and 1 with no timeouts left Bengals, Burrow threw it away to avoid being sacked under pressure from Aaron Donald. Cincinnati let the clock run out. Final Score: Los Angeles Rams 23 Cincinnati Bengals 20.

Biography: John Sinnott was born in Wexford, Ireland in 1958, and played High School Football in Denham, Massachusetts, where he was recruited for Brown University Bears of the Ivy League in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). His High School Football Coach told hm that he might get injured in his first few weeks playing Football, so he should not concentrate on just Football, as his College Academic Achievement was as important, something which is not all that common these days. [Reference: 2] While at Brown, he played in the most successful Brown University Football Team in 50 years, in 1976 emulating the Iron Men of 1926 in winning their first Ivy League Championship in half a century. [Reference: 8]

After College he was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals, where he was cut from the roster during training camp. John was subsequently picked up by the New York Giants, and after two years on the squad, he was traded to the Baltimore Colts. There he played in 9 games in 1982, before injuring his back, an injury which still bothers him to this day, and retired from Football. [Reference: 2; 3]

Biography:

Adrian Young was born in Dublin and grew up in Albert Court, ‘a tough place’, across from Boland Mills, the famous bread company. He would go to hurling and football matches at Croke Park and got to participate in a track meet there, an experience which meant a lot to him. He got involved through his father in soccer in the Phoenix Park. It was the middle of the 1950s, however, and there was a large amount of emigration. Adrian’s father followed in some of his siblings footsteps and moved to Baltimore. The rest of the family arrived by boat in New York from Cobh in Cork once Adrian father had settled there.

It was not long before California beckoned and they drove in a 1953 Ford all the way along the Appalachian Trail and Route 66 before setting in La Puente, about half an hour from downtown Los Angeles. While in Los Angeles Adrian attended Bishop Amat High School, and with no Soccer on the activities list Adrian joined the Football program. winning an Inter-State Championship. Despite being slight at 165 pounds Young dedicated himself to training and he won a scholarship to the University of Southern California.

At USC he was co-captain of a side featuring O.J. Simpson, Tim Rossovich and Ron Yary, all legendary American footballers. It was during one game against longtime rival Notre Dame that Young made National Football League teams sit up and notice. He made four interceptions in the game, tying a conference record. The Los Angeles Times called it “Young’s greatest day.” USC went to the Rose Bowl twice during Young’s career. In 1967, behind O.J. Simpson, one of the greatest pro and college players ever, USC won the national championship. Young was selected as an All-Conference and All-American player. , significant awards.

Simpson carved out a stellar career with the Buffalo Bills in the NFL while Yary was the first draft pick 12 months later and became a star with the Minnesota Vikings. Rossovich was, like Young, drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles. Rossovich had roomed with Tom Selleck at USC and became a Hollywood stuntman after his football career. Young and Rossovich roomed together while at the Eagles. At USC, Young remembers rubbing shoulders with billionaires and the Hollywood Elite. He recalls going to parties and seeing Oscars in the dens of some of the houses.

He recalled that he was fortunate to stay injury-free in college, but in the tougher world of the NFL he was getting beat up more including tearing ligaments in his right knee. He was a starting linebacker for the Philadelphia Eagles for four and a half years. He then played half a year for the Detroit Lions, one year for the Chicago Bears and two for the Hawaiians in the World Football League. His time at Philadelphia wasn’t as successful as in college as the Eagles went through numerous coaching changes, but he said he got to play six years in the National Football League and nothing could take away from that.

Biography: Tom Furlong was born in Daingean, County Offaly and played Inter-County Football for Offaly before being banned by the County Board for playing soccer and emigrated to New York. Sitting in a bar in New York in 1964, he overheard members of the New York Giants coaching staff lamenting the quality of their kickers (the Giants were having a woeful season) and having seen the game on TV, thought there was nothing to it a GAA player could not do and volunteered to try out. He got on the practice squad for the Giants in 1965, leading to interviews with the New York Times and other newspapers with Irish-American connections.

The Giants brought in a new kicker the following season but Irish-American community leaders, seeing the value of an Irish-born player in the NFL, arranged tryouts with the Atlanta Falcons and New England Patriots. He was signed by the Falcons to a contract for $12, 000 a year, but unfortunately tore his cruciate ligament in training four days before the start of the season.

Furlong didn’t give up on a pro career, however, as he was only working as a carpet fitter at the time, a good job, but not paying nearly as much as Professional Football, and signed with the Brooklyn Dodgers in the Continental Football League where he played the 1966 season before retiring, as he thought his kicking was never as good after the injury.

NOTES

Note: R = Cancelled due to Rain. # Cancelled by the team with the (#) after its score. Considered a forfeit win for the other team by Eirball – Awarded 1-0 (#) CT = Cancelled due to train crash involving visiting Pitcairn team on way to match, no Pitcairn player was hurt. ^ Minor league Opposition thus not counted towards NFL Standings by Eirball.

Note 2: Cincinnati Celts and Minneapolis Marines joined the APFA in 1921 and the Toledo Maroons joined the NFL in 1922.

Note 3: Teams labelled Independent played matches against Official APFA teams. Teams labelled Minor League played matches against “Independents”.

Note 4: While an Official member of the APFA, Muncie Flyers failed the schedule another game after losing heavily to Rock Island Independents on the opening day of the season. Players signed on with other Indiana teams (in particular Muncie Tigers and Wabash AA) as well as APFA team Dayton Triangles. At the end of the season they scheduled three games against Gas City Tigers and Muncie Tigers who both finished the Indiana State Football season with 9-0 records, and the Flyers won all three matches claiming the Indiana State Football Championship in the process. whether their record is to be considered a 3-1 APFA half-season, or an Indiana State Championship season is open to debate. Other APFA teams (Rochester Jeffersons, Hammond Pros, Decatur Staleys, Buffalo All-Americans, Columbus Panhandles, Detroit Heralds and Chicago Cardinals) all also played more non-APFA teams than APFA teams, and other teams in the two seasons the NFL was known as the APFA played a half-schedule: Cincinnati Celts (1-3 in 1920 and 0-4 in 1921), Toledo Maroons (1-3 in 1920) and Tonawanda Kardex (0-2-1 in 1921 with one game cancelled).

IRISH PLAYERS

Bertie Maher, DE, who was born in Co. Mayo, played Defensive End for the Detroit Heralds in 1920. [2][3]

Bob Nash, DE/OT, who was born in Collinstown, Ireland, Played Defensive End & Offensive Tackle for the Akron Pros in 1920 [2][7]

Allen “Pat” McGinnis, who has an Irish name, was player-manager for the Evansville Ex-Collegians in 1920

Youngstown Patricians appear to be named after St. Patrick. On the 22 November 1920, the day the Patricians defeated St. Edwards Saints for the City Championship, the Youngstown Daily Vindicator’s Front Page Headline was ” Battles in Ireland Follow Bloody Day” (Monday, November 22, 1920)They started off as the Church team in St. Patrick’s Parish, before becoming the city’s team. The team was made up of Irish, Poles and Italians, tough men who worked in the steel mills. [Reference: 45]

Cincinnati Celts are another team with an Irish name, albeit one referencing all Celts. George Roudebush was Quarterback for the Cincinnati Celts and his revolutionary use of the foward pass changed football. He remembered the Celts as a team run “by a bunch of wild Irishmen” and was 93 years old in 1988 when interviewed, with his wits still sharp, remembering dates, names nicknames, figures, events and conversations from the era, making him the oldest living NFL player at the time. [Reference: 42]

Bert Maher, born in Co. Mayo, played in the first season for the Detroit Heralds. Bob Nash, played six seasons (1920-1925) for the Akron Pros, Buffalo All-Americans, Rochester J effersons & New York Giants. There was an Player-Manager for the Evansville Ex-Collegians in 1920 with an Irish name: Allen “Pat” McGinnis. Youngstown Patricians included players with names such as Ray Kenealy, Kennedy, Connors and Corcoran.

About the APFA (American Professional Football Association)

After spirallaing wages threatened to destroy the game with players continually jumping from team to team in the Ohio, Pennsylvania & New York Pro Football Circuits, looking for the best pay packet, four teams from Ohio – the Akron Pros, Canton Bulldogs, Cleveland Indians & Dayton Triangles, met in Canton, Ohio, to form a Pro Football League, and invited the top teams from Ohio, New York & Pennsylvania to join them in order to play under a common set of rules, and better organise finances. These states were the hotbed of Pro Football in USA, and the League they formed, the American Professional Football Association, changed its’ name for the 1922 season to the National Football League, laying the foundations for the hugely popular, and lucrative NFL of today.

In its early days, the NFL was still a Minor League, second to College Football in terms of status in the eyes of the Media & fans, and far less popular than Baseball. In 1926 it decided to consolidate the best players on the rosters of a fewer teams, reducing the league from 22 teams to 12. There was no official schedule in 1920, teams arranged their own schedules, often against non-APFA teams. There was a nine week regular season, followed by semi-official playoffs aranged after the season ended to determine a champion between the top 5 in the APFA. In total 14 teams entered the APFA season in 1920, although one – the Muncie Flyers disbanded after one big loss at the start and reformed three weeks from the end only playing from then on Independent teams. Another three teams who played APFA teams also appear to have only played a half schedule of four games – Cincinnati Celts, Toledo Maroons and Youngstown Patricians. Other Independently Scheduled teams also played matches against APFA teams – there were 20 of these in Total. The Cincinnati Celts, Toledo Maroons and Minneapolis Marines, although officially Independent were to join the APFA in 1921 and in 1920 played the bulk of their games versus APFA teams and so are included in the Unofficial APFA Standings by Eirball. The Other 17 Independent teams who played APFA teams are included in their own Unofficial Independent Schedule Standings.

Week 1 Report

Canton Bulldogs, the team who formed the APFA a year previously, easily disposed of non-APFA team Pitcairn Quakers from Pennsylvania 48-0. Another Ohio team, and also early favourite for the title, Akron Pros similarly defeated Wheeling Stogies of West Virginia 43-0. In Upsate New York, Buffalo All-Americans won 32-6 versus All-Buffalo and Rochester Jeffersons defeated All-Buffalo 10-0. All four of those games were between an APFA team and an Independent team. Meanwhile, two non-APFA games in Ohio featured Irish teams which were later to play APFA teams: Cincinnati Celts winning 6-0 versus Fort Wayne Friars; and Youngstown Patricians, who claimed the World Championship in 1916, who won 21-0 at home versus Sharon. Decatur Staleys, who in two years were to become the Chicago Bears, but who even then in 1920 were still coached by legendary Bears coach George Halas, had some trouble with non-APFA team Moline Tractors, winning 20-0.

All-Tonawanda knocked off Cleveland Panthers 38-0 in another game between two non-APFA teams who were to play APFA teams later in the season. Rock Island Independents of Illinois, who the week previously had defeated St. Paul’s Ideals 48-0 in the first game to feature an APFA team, were this week involved in a one-sided game with Muncie Flyers of Indiana. The Independents were 31-0 up at halftime and took it easy in the second half winning 45-0. All other APFA teams cancelled games with Muncie following this fearing low gate recepits from a match with a sub-standard team. The other APFA game that week besides the Rock Island-Muncie game that featured two APFA teams, in fact, the first ever game featuring two APFA teams saw Dayton Triangles defeat Columbus Panhandles, both from Ohio, 14-0.

National Football League Preseason Standings 1995 [Reference: 1]

Report

1995 saw large-scale change in the National Football League. Debutants Carolina Panthers and Jacksonville Jaguars played in the Hall of Fame Game in Canton, Ohio, to open the Preseason, with the Panthers winning the battle of expansion franchises 20-14. The two Los Angeles teams also embarked for new patstures: the Rams to St. Louis and the Raiders back to Oakland. Two American Bowls were played that year – Buffalo Bills defeating Dallas Cowboys 9-7 in Toronto, Canada, and Denver Broncos winning 24-10 in Tokyo, Japan against San Francisco 49ers.

Elsewhere the Houston Oilers, a year before they left for Tennessee, played two preseason home games outside Houston: versus Washington Redskins in Knoxville, Tennessee, and Dallas Cowboys in San Antonio, Texas, losing both. Miami Dolphins and Tampa Bay Buccaneers also played a game in Orlando, Florida, with Tampa Bay Buccaneers winning, while the New England Patriots lost a ‘home’ game in Stanford, California to the Oakland Raiders, and the New York Jets similarly lost a home game versus Philadelphia Eagles at Jackson, Mississippi. Preseason Division Champions were Indianapolis Colts (3-1, AFC East), Cleveland Browns (2-2, AFC Central), Kansas City Chiefs (3-1, AFC West), Philadelphia Eagles (4-0, NFC East), Detroit Lions (3-1, NFC Central), and Carolina Panthers (3-2, NFC West). Only the Kansas City Chiefs went on to win their Division durling the Regular Season.

National Football League Preseason Results 1986 [Reference: 1]

Report

The National Football League Preseason of 1986 featured the American Bowl ’86 in London, England, where the Chicago Bears defeated the Dallas Cowboys 17-6. The Preseason, as usual, opened with the Hall of Fame Game in Canton, Ohio, where the New England Patriots won a tight game 21-16 against the St. Louis Cardinals. After four more weeks of games, Preseason Division titles went to New England Patriots (4-1, AFC East), Cleveland Browns (4-0, AFC Central), San Diego Chargers (3-1, AFC West), New York Giants (3-1, NFC East), Chicago Bears (4-1, NFC Central), and Atlanta Falcons (2-2, NFC West). Four of these teams went on to win their Regular Season Division title, only the San Diego Chargers (who lost out to the Denver Broncos) and Atlanta Falcons who lost out to San Francisco 49ers, failed to translate Preseason form into Regular Season Championships.
