Report
The history of Irish American Football south or the border in 1989 and 1990 is somewhat of a mystery. The Dublin Tornadoes dropped out of the Combined Gridiron League Irish Conference in 1989, forfeiting all their fixtures, as well as not competing in the League in 1990. The Dublin Celts played in the NCMMA, the British Second Level in 1990, while also playing friendlies against teams in the Irish League, which was exclusively Northern Ireland. The 1990 Shamrock Bowl was between the Dublin Celts and the Irish League Champions.
What is known of Irish American Football in the Republic of Ireland for the two years in question is that there were plans for a 12-team league in Ireland in 1990 which never materialised. The Dublin Celts, Dublin Tornadoes, Bray Seahawks, Lee Valley steelers (Cork), as well as teams in Limerick, Waterford and a third Dublin team were planned to play alongside the Northern Ireland teams, but it never came about. There were two separate Regional Bodies – the Northern Ireland American Football association and the Irish Council of American Football, below, and a constituent part of, the American Football Association of Ireland.
The only result from the period involving teams from Southern Ireland for the period is a game between the Dublin Tornadoes and Bray Seahawks sometime before November 31 1989. Both teams mention in the papers they have full squads and are looking forward to the season. Dublin Tornadoes won that match.
