International Flag Football Challenge – Ireland 27 England 7 – 6 May 2000

Ireland 27 England 7 – Dublin – 6 May 2000

Ireland 27 England 7 – While it was billed as Ireland’s first ever International Flag Football match, this was not the case, however it was to be memorable nonetheless, with Quarterback Aidan Kelly putting in an impressive preformance to marshall Ireland to a 27-7 triumph. Ireland opened the scoring on their second drive in the First Half with a 25-yard run by Brian Dennehy. Steve Gleeson added the extra point to make it 7-0. England replied almost immediately with their Quarterback Martin Brown connecting with Lawrence Tallon (Fen Harriers) on their next play from scrimmage, who sprinted 70 yards to the endzone. Midway through the First Half Ireland retook the lead when Brian Dennehy added a 20-yard reception and run. Padraig Reddington caught a 10-yard Touchdown Pass from Aiden Kelly and also addec the extra point to put Ireland 20-7 up at halftime.

England pressed hard after the break but failed on numerous occasions to convert possession deep in the Irish half to scores, with Stephen Dunne pull in two interceptions and Al Burke and Padraig Reddington combining for three sacks. Ireland took control of the game late in the Second Half, following Liam Farrell’s 20-yard Touchdown in the dying minutes, to make the final score 27-7. Ireland’s Coach Ian McGuinness was pleased with the win considering it was Ireland’s first ever match (since the Irish American Football Association was resurrected). The match was to become an annual affair with Ireland travelling to England for a return fixture in 2001.

Anglo-Irish Flag Football Challenge Drimnagh Cycos v BSFL Allstars Game Summary 2003

Drimnagh Cycos 12 BSFL Allstars 18 – 25 January 2003

Drimnagh Cycos 12 BSFL Allstars 18 – The BSFL Allstars travelled to Dublin on a cold, wet windy day on Saturday, 25 January 2003 to play the Drimnagh Cycos in the Anglo-Irish Flag Football Challenge in the Phoenix Park. The BSFL Allstars were made up of players from the Bournemouth Raiders and Invicta (Canterbury) Coyotes. The match was 7v7 Flag Football under the Irish Rules then used in Ireland. The Cycos first possession was stopped at the 20-yard line by a strong BSFL Defensive stand. On the first BSFL possession QB Nick Michael threw the ball straight into the hands of the Cycos #55 (Liam Farrell), although again the Allstars defense stopped the Cycos from scoring. QB Michael yet again threw an interception on the next BSFL drive, this time in the endzone. Drimnagh Cycos Quarterback Aidan Kelly scored the first Touchdown of the game on the next possesion, running in from 5 yards. Stephen wigley of the BSFL Allstars helted the Point After with a lunging tackle. Michael threw a third interception on the next drive, this time to Cornerback #53 who returned it 30 yards for the second touchdown. Kelly was tagged on the resulting option play by Mark Houston, ening the PAT attempt, leaving the score 12-0 to Drimnagh. Mark houston replaced Nick Michael at Quarterback for the Allstars, and they drove downfield in the final two minutes of the half to put a score on the board as Abdulmalik Lawal caught a 10 yard TD Pass from Houston, although the PAT attempt was unsuccessful. The Half-Time Score read Drimnagh Cycos 12 BSFL Allstars 6.

The second half started with playmaker Mark Houston calling a no huddle offense with Michael as QB and Houston as Wide Receiver. While a couple of Cycos looked at Houston, none decided to cover him and Michael completed a 75-yard pass to Houston to tie the game. The PAT attempt to Stephen Wigley was spoiled by a Drimnagh defender. The BSFL defense dominated the Cycos from there to the final whistle, leaving little room on passing, running, option and trick plays, and both Vincent Gurrea and Stephen Wigley got interceptions for the Allstars. BSFL decide to run conservative rushing plays up the middle by Houston and the outside by Lawal, who broke free on a 40-yard running play to put the BSFL Allstars 18-12 up. After a controversial sack in the endzone where the teams dispured whether it should be a safety or not, the Cycos kept the ball on their own goalline. Three plays later Houston intercepted a Cyco pass and returned it 20 yards, but BSFL could not get in the endzone as the Irish team kept them out. The Cycos then took over and started slowly marching downfield, and after two unsuccessful attempts to get in the endzone they face 4th and Goal from the 10 yard line. QB Kelly rolled out to his right looking for Receivers #55 (Liam Farrell) and #53 but they were covered. Kelly circled back, looking for an open Tight End in the Endzone to his left, but just as he was about to release the ball, Lawal dove to take the flag, leaving the BSFL Allstars 18-12 winners.

About Flag Football

Flag Football is a non-contact version of American Football whereby teams (usually of 5) play on a smaller field (50 yards with two 10 yard endzones), using Flags tied around their waist which must be pulled of by the tackler. The aim as in American Football is to pass or run the ball into the opposition endzone, within a specified number of downs (attempts) – teams have four downs in which to reach the Halfway line or two lines close to either endzone, or the ball is turned over to the opposition. On completing either a touchdown (reaching the endzone) or one of the first down markers (ie the Halfway line or one of the other two lines) the down count starts at one again. A Touchdown is worth 6 points, and a conversion (which must be passed into the endzone) is worth one or two points depending on whether the scoring team opts to start from the 5 yard line or 20 yard line. There is no kicking, although in Irish Flag Football in the 1990s there was kicking and seven player teams. Teams are mixed (coed).

USa won the first Championship in 2009, defeating Canada 41-3 in the Final, and then Canada got revenge in 2012, defeating USA 23-17. The pattern was repeated in 2014 and 2016, with first USA winning 40-17, and then Canada triumphing 24-6. In 2018 the sequence was broken with Canada becoming the first Country to repeat as Champions, triumphing 13-7 over Mexico in the Final.

About American Football

American Football, and its close cousin, Canadian Football are two variations of Gridiron Footbal, the dominant codes of the game in both countries. Both codes evolved side by side from Rugby fron the 1850s onwards, with Canadian Football currently employing 12-player squads as opposed to American Football which plays 11v11. Unlike in Rugby forward passes are allowed by the Quarterback (each position in Gridiron Football is highly specialised). Scoring is similar to Rugby except a Touchdown (Try) is worth 6 points, and a conversion kick one point. teams have the option of passing or running the conversion into the endzone (where one must score the touchdown) for two points. The main object of the sports are to get the ball into the other teams endzone (endzones are at either end of the pitch). Teams do not have unlimited attempts to do so, however, and if they do not make 10 yards in four downs (attempts) the ball is turned over (3 downs in Canadian Football). Teams have the option of kicking a Field Goal, worth 3 points, if they think they won’t make the 10 yards. In Canadian Football there is also a ‘Rouge’, whereby one point is scored if the ball is kicked through the other teams endzone. Another popular version of the game in Mexico and USA is Arena or Indoor Football, which is played on a 50 yard field with two 8 yard endzones, with teams having 5 downs in which to score, three of which must be passing plays. It is played on converted Ice Hockey Rinks. A Canadian Football field is 110 yards long with two 20 yard endzones and an American Football field is 100 yards long with two 10 yard endzones.

Team Canada Flag Football Tour of Ireland and Scotland 2009

Report

Team Canada Flag Football Select Junior Team (18-22) were to tour Ireland and Scotland from 12th to 22nd of March 2009 as part of a Global Tour that was to take in Puerto Rico (5-14 December 2008), Netherlands/Belgium (7-17 May 2009),and Japan (August 2009).

Shamrock Bowl IV Box-Score and Match Report

5 November 1991 – Musgrave Park, Belfast – A26 Bulldogs 6 Dublin Celts 7

The Dublin Celts survived a scare from the A26 Bulldogs, as a combination of wind, and poor snaps and kicking left the Antrim team a point adrift of the Celtsat the end of Shamrock Bowl IV, played in Musgrave Park, Belfast. The A26 Bulldogs took a 6-0 lead after Dave Elliott and William ‘Demo’ Beattie ran the ball down field after a Celt fumble. However, the Point After Touchdown was missed, which they were to rue at the end of the day. The Celts struck back through Quarterback John Donnelly connecting with Mark Rutherford in the second quarter, to leave them 7-6 ahead at the interval after Jimmie Kelly’s extra-point kick was good.

In the second half the ball changed hands regularly, and with 40 seconds to go, the Bulldogs defense, strong on the day, gave the offence which was out of sorts possession within field goal range, but the kick went wide, sending the Bowl back to Dublin. The Celts defensive unit played tough the entire game, holding the A26 Bulldogs to just 62 yards, including a total of minus-10 yards for the Belfast passing game.

The Celts had won their playoff game with the Giants 19-6, despite reports of the Giants team being stocked with players from the other Northern Ireland teams [Reference: 3] In the Playoffs, the A26 Bulldogs beat the Belfast Spartans 7-0 and the Celts had defeated the NI Giants 19-6. Dublin Tornadoes forfeited all their matches, and the NI Giants, Belfast Spartans and Craigavon Cowboys finished mid-table, with wins over the East Antrim Cougars.

About

For the 1989 season (the fourth season of the IAFL) the Irish American Football League elected to play in the Combined Gridiron League, which was an attempt to unite the various Independent Leagues of Ireland, England, Scotland and Wales. Teams were placed in an Irish conference in the Duke Premier Division (CGL 2nd Level – 3rd in the Atlantic Isles) and the Baron First Division (CGL 3rd Level – 4th in the Atlantic Isles).

There were Playoffs in each Division, with the two Irish conference winners also playing off in the Shamrock Bowl for the Irish title. Teams played a balanced schedule of two games against each division opponent and once against teams from the other division.

New Teams: Belfast A26 Bulldogs. Belfast Giants returned after a hiatus of one season as the NI Giants.

Non-Returning Teams: Coleraine Chieftains (sat out year – returned in 1990), Belfast Blitzers.

Name Changes: Carrickfergus Cougars moved to Newtownabbey, becoming the East Antrim Cougars.
