Report

The Continental Football League was created in 1965 from the merger of the United Football League and Atlantic Coast Football League as a Development League to the National Football League, with teams situated on the East Coast and in Toronto, . In 1966, the League broke away from autonomy towards a working alliance with AFL & NFL clubs, causing Commissioner Chandler to resign, as it was moving away from the original charter he signed up to. The League added a Pacific Division that year.

1967 was a difficult year for the CoFL as a number of teams failed to finish the season, although the League became more “Continental” by merging with Professional Football League of America, thus bringing in teams from the Centre. In 1969 the League absorbed the Texas Professional Football League, and looked to become the largest Football League in the country, as it bid for University of Southern California star, O. J. Simpson. the newly merged NFL-AFL began opening their pockets in 1970 and the Continental Football League fell apart as backers pulled out.

Tom Furlong

Born: Daingean, Co. offaly

Career: Kicker on the Practice Squad of the New York Giants (NFL) 1965 / Pre-Season signing for Atlanta Falcons (NFL) 1966 (Cut after tearing cruciate ligaments) / Brooklyn Dodgers, Continental Football League 1966.

Biography: Tom Furlong was born in Daingean, Co. Offaly, and played Inter-County Football for Offaly, before being banned by the County Board for playing Soccer. Sitting in a bar in New York, he overheard members of the New York Giants Coaching Staff lamenting at the quality of their kickers (The Giants were having a woeful season) and having seen the game on TV, thought there was nothing to it a GAA player could not do, and volunteered to try out. He got on the Practice Squad for the Giants in 1965, leading to interviews with the New York Times and other newspapers with Irish-American connections.

The Giants brought in a new Kicker the following season, but the Irish-American Community Leaders, seeing the value of an Irish-born player in the NFL, arranged tryouts with the Atlanta Falcons and New England Patriots. He was signed by the Falcons for $12, 000-a-yeat contract, but unfortunately tore his cruciate ligament in training four days before the start of the season.

He didn’t give up on a Pro Career, however, as he was only working as a carpet fitter at the time and signed for the Brookyn Dodgers in the Continental Football League, where he played the 1966 season before retiring, as he thought his kicking was never as good after the injury.

Report

Following claims of sexism the Lingerie Football League ditched the Lingerie Kit the Women had to wear and adopted shorts and crop-tops, changing its name to the Legends Football League in the process.

The newly-named Legends Cup was won in 2013 by Chicago Bliss, 33-14 over Philadelphia Passion. They won again the following year, 24-18 over Atlanta Steam. They were unable to win three-in-a-row however, losing the 2015 Cup 27-21 to Seattle Mist, before gaing revenge in Legends Cup 2016, beating the same opposition 31-26.

The 2017 edition of the Legends Cup went back to Seattle with the Mist defeating Atlanta Steam 38-28, before Chicago Bliss became the winningest team in Legends Cup History with victory in the 2019 Legends Cup, defeating Austin Acoustic 28-20

Report

The Lingerie Bowl started in 2004 as a rival to the NFL Super Bowl Half-Time Show, featuring two teams of scantilly-clad acresses and models.

By 2009 it had become a fully-fledged League: The Lingerie Football League, with 10 teams divided into an Eastern & Western Conference, playing 7v7 Tackle Football although with very little protection in terms of padding or kit. The Eastern Conference consisted of Chicago Bliss, Miami Caliente, Tampa Breeze, Philadelphia Passion and New York Majesty, and the Western Conference consisted of Los Angeles Temptation, Dallas Desire, Seattle Mist, Denver Dream and San Diego Seduction. The season consisted of 4 Regular Season Matches, plus Playoffs,.

Lingerie Bowl VII won by Los Angeles Temptation, 27-14 over Chicago Bliss. The 2010-11 season saw Orlando Fantasy & Baltimore Charm replace New York Majesty and Denver Dream. The 2011 Lingerie Bowl was won by Los Angeles again, 26-25 over Philadelphia Passion, and they completed the three-in-a-row in 2012, again defeating the Paasion, this time by a more comfortable margin 28-6.

There was an expansion for the 2011-12 season, going from 10-12 teams with the addition of Minnesota Valkyrie, Green Bay Chill, Toronto Triumph, Las Vegas Sin and Cleveland Crush. Miami Caliente, Dallas Desire and San Diego Seduction left the League

Following criticism of the kit the players were wearing, with claims the League was sexist, the League changed its name to the Legends Football League for the 2012-13 season, and played in Beach Volleyball-style shorts and crop-tops rather than Lingerie.

The London Monarchs won World Bowl ’91 21-0 against Barcelona Dragons at home in Wembley Stadium, in an all-European Final. They had finished top of the European Division with a 9-1 record, and the Dragons second with an 8-2 record, also qualifying for the playoffs as a wild-card qualifier (best runner-up).

The other Division Champions were New York New Jersey Knights (5-5, North American East) and Birmingham Fire (5-5, North American West). In all 10 teams played in the first year of the World League of American Football, including Frankfurt Knights, Raleigh-Durham Skyhawks, Orlando Thunder, Montreal Machine, Sacramento Surge and San Antonio Riders.

For the second season of the World League the NFL (the League’s owners) replaced the struggling Raleigh-Durham team with the Ohio Glory in Columbus. Barcelona Dragons (5-5), Orlando Thunder (8-2) and Sacramento Surge (8-2) were the three Division winners, with Birmingham Fire (8-2-1) also qualifying for the playoffs as a wildcard. Sacramento surge went on to win World Bowl ’92 21-17 against Orlando Thunder in the Olympic Stadium in Montreal, Canada.

After 1992 the NFL put the World League on ice, and brought it back in 1995 as a Europe-only league with six teams.

The World League of American Football was started by the National Football League as an Official Development League, with the intention of also possibly heading off any rivial to the NFL in 1990s like the American Football League of the 1960s, World Football League of the 1970s, and United States Football League of the 1980s, all of whom attempted to take on the NFL head-to-head, and the in the case of the AFL to successfully merge with the NFL.
