Biography

Born: Galway, Ireland, 1 March 1992.

College: International (Ireland); Lindenwood University (USA).

Professional Career: Connacht Rugby (Pro 12 Rugby); New England Free Jacks (Major League Rugby, 2019); Aviators (The Spring League 2021); Panthers Wroclaw (European League of Football 2021); Hamilton Tiger-Cats (Canadian Football League Preseason 2022)

Former Connacht Rugby player Tadgh Leader was born in Galway, Ireland. At the age of 15 he and his brother Darragh headed out to kick some Rugby balls at their local pitch on Christmas Day. His dad, a former Galwegians RFC Rugby player made a bet with them that they could not kick the ball over the bars from the halfway line. Both Tadgh and his brother Darragh won €50 each.

Tadgh went on to play Rugby Professionally for Connacht and Darragh now lives in USA where he coaches at Clemson University Tigers. Tadhg suffered a number of injuries during his last few years at Connacht and after playing in Italy he ended up studying in USA and playing for both New England Free Jacks in Major League Rugby and making his Test debut for USA Eagles Rugby Union National Team.

Tadgh was signed up to play another year of Rugby Union in 2021 when the kicker started kicking American Footballs for fun. People took notice and said he should try out for American Football teams and so he went off to San Diego where he was kicking alongside Super Bowl-winning athletes. Unsure of his own ability he asked John Carney, who has 23 years of experience kicking Footballs and Carney said he could mix it with the NFL players.

Before long Leader found himself playing for the Aviators in The Spring League in USA. The Aviatiors, one of four teams based in Indianapolis, a COVID-19 Pod and one of two Pods in the 8-team league in 2021 finished with an 0-6 record in 2021. On May 7 versus Alphas Tadgh Leader scored the first points of his American Football career kicking a Field Goal to make the score Aviators 3 Alphas 7 at Halftime.

After spending Spring in Indianapolis with the Aviators Tadgh signed for Panthers Wroclaw in the European League of Football, making his debut on August 1 in a 31-33 loss at Cologne Centurions. Tadhg scored a 35-yard Field Goal in that game to make the score 16-7 [References: 7-8] On August 22 he kicked a 52-yard Field Goal, his personal highlight in a 30-24 victory at Hamburg Sea Devils [References: 9-10]. The Hamburg game was his fourth of the ELF season [References: 11]. Panthers Wroclaw finished the season with three straight wins to finish on 6-4 and reached the Playoffs where they lost to Hamburg Sea Devils 27-30.

In March 2022 Leader signed for Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the Canadian Football League, scoring the winning Field Goal with seconds left in the Ti-Cats opening preseason game versus Montreal Alouettes. After their second and last preseason game of the 2022 season where Leader sat on the bench and did not feature, Tadgh was released. [References: 15-21]

Recap

The Major Alternative Football Leagues of 2021 were The Spring League which kicked off its 5th season this year, with a major expansion, adding a second hub city and four teams to its schedule, the European League of Football, Japan X-League X1 Super, and the Canadian Football League.

The Linemen won TSL North in Indianapolis with a 5-1 record and the Jousters were Champions of TSL South in Houston with a 4-2 record. In a close Mega Bowl Linemen defeated Jousters 26-23 [13-14]. Tadhg Leader, former Connacht Rugby player, who was born in Ireland, played kicker for the Aviators who finished 0-6 in the TSL North [8-10].

Following the TSL season, Tadhg Leader moved on to play for Panthers Wroclaw of Poland in the European League of Football, along with a young Tallaght, South Dublin County native Kevin Mayo. The Panthers finished the season 6-4 in the ELF North but lost the Semi-Final 27-30 at Hamburg Sea Devils, who finished runners-up to ELF South Champions Frankfurt Galaxy (9-1) who won the ELF Championship Game 32-30 in an even closer game than the TSL Mega Bowl [7-8].

By the Fall the Japan X-League had kicked off and the 6-1 Fujitsu Frontiers upset the 7-0 Panasonic Impulse 24-20 in the Rice Bowl [4-5]. This was the first year the JXL had sole ownership of the Rice Bowl, previously the X-League Champions contested the Rice Bowl with the College Champions in Japan.

The Canadian Football League, the biggest of the Major Alternative Football Leagues played a covid-shortened 14-game schedule, with newly renamed Edmonton Elks struggling to a 3-11 record, worst in the CFL. The big news on the Football field however was Winnipeg Blue Bombers who went 11-3 in winning the CFL West before triumphing 33-25 against Hamilton Tiger-Cats (8-6) who had upset CFL East Champions Toronto Argonauts 27-19 in the Eastern Final [2].

Tadhg Leader – Irish-born Player (Panthers Wroclaw ELF and Aviators TSL)

Former Connacht Rugby player Tadhg Leader was born in Galway, Ireland. At the age of 15 he and his brother Darragh headed out to kick some Rugby balls at their local pitch on Christmas Day. His dad, a former Galwegians RFC Rugby player made a bet with them that they could not kick the ball over the bars from the halfway line. Both Tadhg and his brother Darragh won €50 each.

Tadhg went on to play Rugby Professionally for Connacht and Darragh now lives in USA where he coaches at Clemson University Tigers. Tadhg suffered a number of injuries during his last few years at Connacht and after playing in Italy he ended up studying in USA and playing for both New England Free Jacks in Major League Rugby and making his Test debut for USA Eagles Rugby Union National Team.

Tadhg was signed up to play another year of Rugby Union in 2021 when the kicker started kicking American Footballs for fun. People took notice and said he should try out for American Football teams and so he went off to San Diego where he was kicking alongside Super Bowl-winning athletes. Unsure of his own ability he asked John Carney, who has 23 years of experience kicking Footballs and Carney said he could mix it with the NFL players.

Before long Leader found himself playing for the Aviators in The Spring League in USA. The Aviatiors, one of four teams based in Indianapolis, a COVID-19 Pod and one of two Pods in the 8-team league in 2021 finished with an 0-6 record in 2021. On May 7 versus Alphas Tadhg Leader scored the first points of his American Football career kicking a Field Goal to make the score Aviators 3 Alphas 7 at Halftime.

After spending Spring in Indianapolis with the Aviators Tadhg signed for Panthers Wroclaw in the European League of Football, making his debut on opening day in a 55-39 victory over Cologne Centurions. [References: 8-10]

Kevin Mayo – Irish Player (Panthers Wroclaw ELF)

Kevin Mayo, who is from Tallaght, South Dublin Co. in Ireland, and had previously played for the South Dublin Panthers in the American Football Ireland League joined the Panthers Wroclaw at the tail end of the season after being picked up by North Park University in Chicago, an NCAA Division III College.

Before long Leader found himself playing for the Aviators in The Spring League in USA. The Aviatiors, one of four teams based in Indianapolis, a COVID-19 Pod and one of two Pods in the 8-team league in 2021 finished with an 0-6 record in 2021. On May 7 versus Alphas Tadhg Leader scored the first points of his American Football career kicking a Field Goal to make the score Aviators 3 Alphas 7 at Halftime.

After spending Spring in Indianapolis with the Aviators Tadhg signed for Panthers Wroclaw in the European League of Football, making his debut on August 1 in a 31-33 loss at Cologne Centurions. Tadhg scored a 35-yard Field Goal in that game to make the score 16-7 [References: 7-8] On August 22 he kicked a 52-yard Field Goal, his personal highlight in a 30-24 victory at Hamburg Sea Devils [References: 9-10]. The Hamburg game was his fourth of the ELF season [References: 11]. Panthers Wroclaw finished the season with three straight wins to finish on 6-4 and reached the Playoffs where they lost to Hamburg Sea Devils 27-30.

Biography: John Sinnott was born in Wexford, Ireland in 1958, and played High School Football in Denham, Massachusetts, where he was recruited for Brown University Bears of the Ivy League in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). His High School Football Coach told hm that he might get injured in his first few weeks playing Football, so he should not concentrate on just Football, as his College Academic Achievement was as important, something which is not all that common these days. [Reference: 2] While at Brown, he played in the most successful Brown University Football Team in 50 years, in 1976 emulating the Iron Men of 1926 in winning their first Ivy League Championship in half a century. [Reference: 8]

After College he was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals, where he was cut from the roster during training camp. John was subsequently picked up by the New York Giants, and after two years on the squad, he was traded to the Baltimore Colts. There he played in 9 games in 1982, before injuring his back, an injury which still bothers him to this day, and retired from Football. [Reference: 2; 3]

Biography:

Adrian Young was born in Dublin and grew up in Albert Court, ‘a tough place’, across from Boland Mills, the famous bread company. He would go to hurling and football matches at Croke Park and got to participate in a track meet there, an experience which meant a lot to him. He got involved through his father in soccer in the Phoenix Park. It was the middle of the 1950s, however, and there was a large amount of emigration. Adrian’s father followed in some of his siblings footsteps and moved to Baltimore. The rest of the family arrived by boat in New York from Cobh in Cork once Adrian father had settled there.

It was not long before California beckoned and they drove in a 1953 Ford all the way along the Appalachian Trail and Route 66 before setting in La Puente, about half an hour from downtown Los Angeles. While in Los Angeles Adrian attended Bishop Amat High School, and with no Soccer on the activities list Adrian joined the Football program. winning an Inter-State Championship. Despite being slight at 165 pounds Young dedicated himself to training and he won a scholarship to the University of Southern California.

At USC he was co-captain of a side featuring O.J. Simpson, Tim Rossovich and Ron Yary, all legendary American footballers. It was during one game against longtime rival Notre Dame that Young made National Football League teams sit up and notice. He made four interceptions in the game, tying a conference record. The Los Angeles Times called it “Young’s greatest day.” USC went to the Rose Bowl twice during Young’s career. In 1967, behind O.J. Simpson, one of the greatest pro and college players ever, USC won the national championship. Young was selected as an All-Conference and All-American player. , significant awards.

Simpson carved out a stellar career with the Buffalo Bills in the NFL while Yary was the first draft pick 12 months later and became a star with the Minnesota Vikings. Rossovich was, like Young, drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles. Rossovich had roomed with Tom Selleck at USC and became a Hollywood stuntman after his football career. Young and Rossovich roomed together while at the Eagles. At USC, Young remembers rubbing shoulders with billionaires and the Hollywood Elite. He recalls going to parties and seeing Oscars in the dens of some of the houses.

He recalled that he was fortunate to stay injury-free in college, but in the tougher world of the NFL he was getting beat up more including tearing ligaments in his right knee. He was a starting linebacker for the Philadelphia Eagles for four and a half years.He then played half a year for the Detroit Lions, one year for the Chicago Bears and two for the Hawaiians in the World Football League. His time at Philadelphia wasn’t as successful as in college as the Eagles went through numerous coaching changes, but he said he got to play six years in the National Football League and nothing could take away from that.

Biography: Tom Furlong was born in Daingean, County Offaly and played Inter-County Football for Offaly before being banned by the County Board for playing soccer and emigrated to New York. Sitting in a bar in New York in 1964, he overheard members of the New York Giants coaching staff lamenting the quality of their kickers (the Giants were having a woeful season) and having seen the game on TV, thought there was nothing to it a GAA player could not do and volunteered to try out. He got on the practice squad for the Giants in 1965, leading to interviews with the New York Times and other newspapers with Irish-American connections.

The Giants brought in a new kicker the following season but Irish-American community leaders, seeing the value of an Irish-born player in the NFL, arranged tryouts with the Atlanta Falcons and New England Patriots. He was signed by the Falcons to a contract for $12, 000 a year, but unfortunately tore his cruciate ligament in training four days before the start of the season.

Furlong didn’t give up on a pro career, however, as he was only working as a carpet fitter at the time, a good job, but not paying nearly as much as Professional Football, and signed with the Brooklyn Dodgers in the Continental Football League where he played the 1966 season before retiring, as he thought his kicking was never as good after the injury.

Biography

Neil O’Donoghue was born in Dublin in 1953 and grew up in Clondalkin, where at the age of 12 he started playing Gaelic Football (GAA) where he excelled, being selected for the Dublin Minor Team which reached the All Ireland Final in 1970, losing to Cork. He switched codes to Soccer, scoring on his debut for Shamrock Rovers in the League of Ireland when was 18. He played 16 games for Rovers, scoring two goals, and gaining a soccer Scholarship to St, Bernard’s Colege, in Alabama, the first Irishman ever to gain a Soccer Scholarship to the USA.

After the College Soccer Programme closed down he transfered to Auburn University, winning the starting Kicker position for the Tigers. In 1976 he won All-American Honours for Auburn, who play in the SEC (South Eastern Conference – traditionally the best in US College Football). He was drafted to the NFL (National Football League) in 1977 by the Buffalo Bills, playing five games before being cut from the roster and picked up by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where he played two year, turning around a 2-26 record in the first two years of the expansion franchise to a 15-17 record.

He then signed for the St. Louis Cardinals in 1980, where he managed to set the record for points scored in a season for the team which stood for 21 years, but will probably be best remembered by the Cardinals (now Arizona Cardinals) fans for lacking clutch kicking skills, most notably missing three Field Goals in a Playoff match against the New York Giants in 1983, including a 19-yard attempt in overtime which would have won the game for St. Louis. On the last day of the season in 1984 he missed what would have been a game-winning Field Goal in the dying seconds which would have secured a Playoff place. After the 1985 season he retired. He continued to play Senior Football Championship Football for Round Towers GAA in Clondalkin during the NFL off-season.

Biography

John Sinnott was born in Wexford, Ireland in 1958, and played High School Football in Denham, Massachusetts, where he was recruited for Brown University Bears of the Ivy League in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). His High School Football Coach told hm that he might get injured in his first few weeks playing Football, so he should not concentrate on just Football, as his College Academic Achievement was as important, something which is not all that common these days. [Reference: 2] While at Brown, he played in the most successful Brown University Football Team in 50 years, in 1976 emulating the Iron Men of 1926 in winning their first Ivy League Chamoionship in half a century. Career: Kicker on the Practice Squad of the New York Giants (NFL) 1965 / Pre-Season signing for Atlanta Falcons (NFL) 1966 (Cut after tearing cruciate ligaments) / Brooklyn Dodgers, Continental Football League 1966.

Biography: Tom Furlong was born in Daingean, Co. Offaly, and played Inter-County Football for Offaly, before being banned by the County Board for playing Soccer. Sitting in a bar in New York, he overheard members of the New York Giants Coaching Staff lamenting at the quality of their kickers (The Giants were having a woeful season) and having seen the game on TV, thought there was nothing to it a GAA player could not do, and volunteered to try out. He got on the Practice Squad for the Giants in 1965, leading to interviews with the New York Times and other newspapers with Irish-American connections.

The Giants brought in a new Kicker the following season, but the Irish-American Community Leaders, seeing the value of an Irish-born player in the NFL, arranged tryouts with the Atlanta Falcons and New England Patriots. He was signed by the Falcons for $12, 000-a-yeat contract, but unfortunately tore his cruciate ligament in training four days before the start of the season.

He didn’t give up on a Pro Career, however, as he was only working as a carpet fitter at the time and signed for the Brookyn Dodgers in the Continental Football League, where he played the 1966 season before retiring, as he thought his kicking was never as good after the injury.

Adrian Young Philadelphia Eagles 1972 [Ref: 6]

Adrian Young, born in Dublin, Ireland, played for the Hawaiians in the World Football League from 1974-1975, as well as Philadelphia Eagles (1968-1972), Detroit Lions (1972) & Chicago Bears (1973) in the National Football League beforehand. [2]

He was born in Dublin, and grew up in Albert Court, across from Boland Mills, the famous bread company. His grandfather had delivered bread for the company on a horse-drawn cart. His mpther was a baker and he went to school in St. Canice’s CBS on North Circular Road, ‘a tough place’ and also Westland Row and Haddington Place.

He would go to hurling and football matches at Croke Park, and got to participate in a track meet there, an experience which meant a lot to him. He got involved through his father in Football in the Phoenix Park. They were a typical Dublin family – his mother came from a big family and they grew up opposite them. They took one bath a week, and his mother heated the water on the stove.

It was the middle of the 1950s, however, and with a large amount of emigration, and his father decided to follow in the footsteps of some of his siblings and move to Baltimore in Maryland, USA. They went to Cobh, in Cork, and took a big boat – the SS United States – on a six or seven day trip across the Atlantic – a journey which remains a vivid memory for Adrian. They landed in New York, and they didn’t have much money. Their father was supposed to pick them up. The car broke down enroute to Baltimore, and they waited six or seven hours in New York for him. He managed to get there eventually, and got to Baltimore, where they were “two strange kids walking around Baltimore” (Adrian and his brother). Their parents got them long pants for the first time.

His fther got a meat-packing job in Baltimore but it wasn’t long before California beckoned, and they drove all the way along the Appalachian Trail, all along Route 66, in a 1953 Ford, before they arrived in Southern California. They settled in La Puente, about half an hour outside downtown Los Angeles. Young attended Bishop Amat High School, and with no soccer on the activities list, joined the Football team, American Football, that is. Their coach was ex-Notre Dame, who wad played under the legendar y Frank Leahy. They won an Inter-State Championship and Young was selected as one of the best players around.

Being Irish, and from a small island, and then being in a big place like the United States of America and Los Angeles, it made him feel more comfortable in it, being good at something over there, like Football. They never had much money, but they were told life was opportunity, and to go after it, so even though Football was alien to his parents, they saved up to buy football cleats.

He was slight though, only 165 lbs, and decided to dedicate himself to training. He won a scholarship to USC (the University of Southern California), he would otherwise have never have afforded to go to University. They had won National Championships a few years previously. Young is part of the USC legend, which is something considering the athletes there over the years. He was co-captain of a side containg OJ Simpson, Tim Rossovich and Ron Yary – all legendary American Footballers. It was during one game against longtime rivals Notre Dame , that Young made NFL teams sit up and notice. . He made four interceptions in the game, which tied a conference record. The LA Times referred to it as “Young’s greatest day” .

With OJ Simpson, one of the greatest Pro and College players ever, on the team, the went all the way to the Rose Bowl, one of the top College Bowls, and Young was selected as an All-Conference and All-American player, significant awards. Simpson carved out a stellar career with the Buffalo Bills in the NFL, Yary was the first draft pick 12 months later for the ad became a star with the Minnesota Vikings. Rossovich was, like Young, drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles, and went on to become a Hollywood stuntman after the NFL – he had roomed with Tom Selleck, while at USC. Young and Rossovich roomed together while at the Eagles. Young rembers his time at USC, rubbing shoulders with billionaires, and going to parties and going into the den and seeing Oscars there. Some of the college students came from the Hollywood Elite.

He recalled that he had been fortunate enough to stay injury free while at college, but in the tougher world of the NFL he was getting beat up more. He had been quick on his feet, but tore his ligament off his right knee. He was able to play again, and was starting linebacker for the Philadelphia Eagles for five and a half years, and then played half a year for the Detroit Lions, and then one for the Chicago Bears, and two for the Hawaiians in the World Football League, a Major League rival to the NFL. He felt his time at Philadelphia wasn’t as successful as his time inn College, the Eagles were going through a transition phase, and had numerous coach changes, but he said he got to play 6 years in the National Football League and nothing could take away from that.

He returned to Dublin recently, and said that it had changed a lot – his old neighbourhood was now an upscale development – but said that his Irish background remained something deeply respected, despite all the fame and glamour he was exposed to in the NFL and USC.
