1992 WLAF Season Recap

With the Raleigh-Durham Skyhawks having moved to Columbus, Ohio and renamed the Ohio Glory, and the New York / New Jersey Knights becoming simply the New York Knights, there was little change in franchises for the second season of the WLAF. The big surprise in 1992 was the struggling fortunes of the three European teams, so dominant in 1991.

Barcelona Dragons, despite starting strong with a 5-1 record after six weeks, then lost four in a row to finish off the season 5-5, but still European Champions after the London Monarchs and Frankfurt Galaxy posted dismal 2-7-1 and 3-7 records respectively. Defending Champions London in particular were a disappointment to their fans.

The WLAF North American East Division was won comfortably by Orlando Thunder on an 8-2 record despite a strong finish by the New York Knights who won their last six games after starting 0-4. Montreal Machine (2-8) disappointed their fans who had hoped to see the team at the World Bowl which was to be held at the Olympic Stadium in the Quebec city. Ohio Glory managed one win, which was one more than the team they replaced, the Raleigh-Durham Skyhawks.

The North American West Division, however, took over from the European Division as the dominant division, with all three teams posting a winning record: Sacramento Surge (8-2), Birmingham Fire (7-2-1) and San Antonio Riders (7-3).

Only the top two could make the playoffs however, and Sacramento took a five-game winning streak into the playoffs where they met the Dragons who were on a four-game losing streak. In the Playoffs Barcelona Dragons almost pulled off a shock, going down 15-17 to Sacramento Surge, while Orlando Thunder went into the World Bowl as favourites after a 45-7 demolition of Birmingham Fire in the other Playoff game.

The World Bowl itself provided an exciting end to the first era of the WLAF, as Sacramento Surge came from 17-6 down at halftime to score two touchdowns in the fourth quarter to stun Orlando Thunder 21-17. Orlando Thunder’s Quarterback, the Irish-named Mitchell, himself threw two touchdowns in the game.(For a Scoring Summary and Match report of the World Bowl ’92 please click on the game itself in the Playoff Schedule to be brought to the game recap).

About the World League of American Football

The World League of American Football was started by the National Football League in 1991 as a Development League, one level below the NFL itself. The WLAF’s first two seasons (1991 and 1992) featured 10 teams – Six in the United States of America, one in Canada (Montreal Machine) and three in Europe (Spain’s Barcelona Dragons, Germany’s Frankfurt Galaxy) and England’s London Monarchs). The League was divided into three Divisions: European, North American East and North American West, with the three division winners and one Wild-Card team (the runner-up with the next best record) qualifying for the playoffs which culminated in the World Bowl. After two seasons the NFL shelved the League and brought it back in 1995 as a six team Europe-only League.

Report

The first attempt at creating a World Pro American Football League that actually managed to get off the ground was the World League of American Football of 1991, which was a National Football League Official AAA Development League featuring 6 teams in the USA, one in Canada and three in Europe. After two seasons the League was put on hiatus by the NFL, the winners at this stage were London Monarchs (1991) and Sacramento Surge (1992).

Taking advantage of the WLAF’s break, the American Football League of Europe, spearheaded by the Hamburg Blue Devils and Terry Smith of the Manchester Spartans, played three seasons from 1993 to 1995, the first as a Limited Schedule Precursor, with the Hamburg Blue Devils winning the four team European Conference and the EuroBears winning the four team UK Conference. While all four teams in the UK Conference were based in Saffron Lane. Leicester, they were supposed to represent the four regions of the UK and were all named after NFL teams with the prefix Euro-added. Given that the Steelers were the designated home team for the NFL game in Dublin, later in 1997, and their owner was a prominent Irish American it could be thought the EuroSteelers were to represent Ireland. The Stockholm Nordic Vikings won both full seasons of the AFLE in 1994 and 1995.

The World League of American Football came back as a six-team Europe-only League in 1995, and the winners from then until 1997 were Frankfurt Galaxy (1995), Scottish Claymores (1996) and Barcelona Dragons (1997). Emmett Waldron, who was born in Cork, played for the Scottish Claymores in the WLAF / NFLE from 1996 to 1999. In 1996 he won the World Bowl with the Claymores when they triumphed 32-27 over the Frankfurt Galaxy in World Bowl 96.

The World League of American Football was renamed the National Football League Europe in 1998, and the Champions from then until 2007 were: Rhein Fire (1998, 2000), Frankfurt Galaxy (1999, 2003, 2006), Berlin Thunder (2001, 2002, 2004), Amsterdam Admirals (2005) and Hamburg Sea Devils (2007). In 2007 the NFL folded the NFL Europe to focus on promoting the NFL in Europe through the International Series of NFL Regular Season Games.

The World League of 2009 to 2011 could be thought of as the United Football League, although based entirely in USA. Its’ Champions were Las Vegas Locomotive (2009, 2010) and Virginia Destroyers (2011). In 2012 former NFL players and Coaches promoted the Elite Football League of India, with teams in India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Pune Marathas won its sole season.

The Legends Football Leagues took over the World League mantle from 2012 to 2017, with BC Angels winning the LFL Canada in 2012-13, NSW Surge winning LFL Australia in 2013-14 and Cougars de Veracruz, Evil Queens Culiacan and Valkirias San Luis Potosi winning the Pretty Girls Football League (Mexico) between 2014 and 2017. Cork-born Linda Holland played for the Western Australia Angels in the LFL Australia, and the Pretty Girls Football League in Mexico included a team called the Morrigans CDMX, named after a Gaelic Celtic Goddess.

In 2016 and 2019 the China Arena Football League was a venture of Arena Football League Global, with the winners being Beijing Lions (2016) and Wuhan Gators (2019). In 2018 Amsterdam Crusaders of the Dutch League, took a seasons break from the League to play an international-only schedule like the Hamburg Blue Devils in 1993.
