Report

The Division 1AA Yankee Conference made its’ second visit to Europe in as many years in 1989 when Villanova University Wildcats and Rhode Island Rams played the Milano Kickoff Classic at the Arena Stadium in Milan in front of 5000 spectators. Despite being 2-5 coming into the game, Rhode Island Rams gave Villanova Wildcats a scare with the lead changing hands numerous times. Villanova took a 7-0 lead on a Scott Donald reception from QB Kirk Schuiz in the first quarter, but Rhode Island responded in the second quarter with a Kevin Neville TD, the QB going in from 1 yard out and a 26 yard John Duffy Field Goal putting the Rams in a shock 10-7 lead. The second quarter scoring was not over however as John Karoly put Villanova back in front with a 9 yard run only to see the Rams regain the lead with a Scott Hunt reception from Kevin Neville. With Rhode Island 17-14 up at the half it seemed an upset was on the cards, however, the Wildcats scored two more touchdowns in the third as they came out fired up: Jeff Johnson diving in from a yard out and Schuiz hitting clutch receiver Robert Brady on a 4 yard Touchdown pass. The Rams did not give up however and were back within touching distance with 11:39 to go in the 4th and Final Quarter when Neville found Jerry Williams for a spectacular 27 yard TD pass. With the resulting two point conversion that left Rhode Island within a Field Goal of Villanova, but they were unable to score again on two further possessions and the Wildcats were able to run out the clock for a 28-25 victory. The win left Villanova on 6-2.

Villanova University is the only Augustinian Catholic University in USA and has a long relationship with Irish Athletes with many going over to study and compete, particularly in Basketball and Athletics. Names such as Robert Brady testifying to the Irish Connection. Rhode Island Rams also had two players with Irish names on the scorers sheet: John Duffy and Kevin Neville.

Global Football Kilimanjaro Bowl 2011

Global Football Logo [Refeences: 1]

Arusha, Africa – 21 May 2011 – Drake Bulldogs (USA) 17 CONADEIP All-Stars (Mexico) 7 – A fourth Quarter comeback by Drake University Bulldogs (USA) delighted a 12,000 strong Tanzanian crowd at the very first College American Football game in Africa on 21 May 2011. The Global Kilimanjaro Bowl, organized by Global Football, played at the Sheik Amri Abedi Memorial Stadium in Arusha, Tanzania. After Billy Janssen scored the first historic points in the first half with a 27 yard Field Goal for the Bulldogs, the CONADEIP All-Stars, from the Private Colleges League in Mexico went ahead in the third quarter when Jose Reyes, who had severely damaged the Drake University defense with 124 yards rushing, went in from 5 yards out. Trailing 7-3 in the Final Quarter, the Bulldogs sent in Back-Up Quarterback Nick Ens who completed an 8 yard Touchdown pass to Joey Orlando to put the Bulldogs back in front, then, also in the final quarter, linebacker Patrick Cashmore recovered a fumble on the 8 yard line, running in for a TD to make the Final score 17-7 to Drake after the successful Point After Touchdown kick. Following the game, on the 25th May, players from both gteams climbed Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s tallest mountain at 19,341 ft, in the nearby Tanzania National Park. The event held was to raise funds for an orphanage in Tanzania [References: 2]. Ireland’s Glenn Baker, from near Athlone, Co. Roscommon, and originally Cork, had previously done that feat, in 2007, raising £4,000 for Charity while at Mount Ida Mustangs on a College Football Scholarship. [References: 3]

Report

In 1970 the film M*A*S*H featured a climactic end-sequence with an American Football game. this was the first ever time an American Football game had been seen on Major TV or Cinema screens in Europe, and started an interest in the American version of Rugby or Football in the continent.

The Intercontinental Football League was set up by Bob Kapp, a Texan who had introduced Professional Soccer to Texas. The intention was to start a Professional American Football League in Europe.

The National Football League had played its first game outside North American between NFL Bleu and NFL rouge in Paris, and the IFL had brought Bruno Beneck, a Media mogul who had successfully introduced Baseball to Italy, and had enough interest to have sold six francises. However, the Oil crisis and the spectre of terrorism in Europe put an end to the League in 1975 before it started.

In the meantime the World Football League had started in the USA with intention of bringing the game to the World. The League played two seasons from 1974 to 1975, although the furthest it got from the American mainland was Hawaii.

The IFL was undeterred, however, and arranged a series of tours by United States College, and Professional teams in Europe. The first Tour was during June 1976 in Germany, Austria and France. The teams were NAIA Colleges (Junior Colleges) Texas A&I Javelinas, who won all five games of the series, and Henderson State College Reddies.

In 1977 the tour featured Semi-Pro teams from the Chicagoland League and the five-game tour visited France, Germany and Austria, and again all five games were won by the same team: Newton Nite Hawks, who defeated Chicago Lions.

The final tour featured AA Professional teams from the Northern States Football League, Quad Cities Black Hawks (who won all five games) and the Indianapolis Capitols. This tour, like the two previous tours, lost a lot of money and Bob Kapp abandoned the venture. However, the long-term impact was the creation of the first teams and Leagues in Germany, Austria, Finland and Italy, one of which, the Dusseldorf Panther, is still in existence. American Football has had a continuous presence in those countries since and has since spread as far as Turkey, Portugal and Iceland.
