Recap

Saskatoon Valkyries sailed through the Western Women’s Canadian Football League 2022 season, winning the Prairie Conference on a 4-0 record, before defeating Edmonton Storm (3-1, Western Conference #2 seed) 52-0 in the Crossover Semi-Finals and then triumphing 36-6 over Manitoba Fearless (3-1, Prairie Conference #2 seed) in the WWCFL Final. The title was Saskatoon Valkyrie’s seventh overall and first since 2019 due to the two-year enforced shutdown of the league due to COVID-19. [References: S1]

About the WWCFL 2022 Season

The 2022 Western Women’s Canadian Football League (WWCFL) season was the 10th season of the league, having been founded in 2011 (2020 and 2021 seasons were cancelled due to COVID-19). The Gridiron Football League for Women is based in the Western Canada Provinces of Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta. The Prairie Conference for 2022 consisted of Regina Riot and Saskatoon Valkyries from Saskatchewan and Winnipeg Wolfpack and Manitoba Fearless (Winnipeg) from Manitoba. The Western Conference consisted of the Alberta teams Calgary Rage, Edmonton Storm and Lethbridge Steel. Northern Anarchy (Western Conference) were the only team to not return after the enforced COVID-19 shutdown of the league. The two Conferences each played a four-game regular season entirely within their own Conference before the playoffs. The Playoffs were Crossover between Conferences from the Semi-Finals (Final four). Recap

1958 was the first official year of the Canadian Football League (CFL) and Winnipeg Blue Bombers greatest season ever, winning 13 games (a team record only beaten in 2022) and proceeding to win the Grey Cup by defeating Hamilton Tiger-Cats 35-28. Along the way in the playoffs they won the Western Final by two games to one versus Edmonton Eskimos who had knocked out Saskatchewan Roughriders in two games in the Western Semi-Final. The Eastern Final was won by Hamilton in two games versus Ottawa Rough Riders, who had eliminated Montreal Alouettes 26-12 in a single game in the Eastern Semi-Final. [References: S-1]

About the 1958 Canadian Football League

1958 was the first official year of the Canadian Football League, having broken away from the Canadian Rugby Union and adopted fully Gridiron Football rules like in the National Football League with a number of exceptions: 3-Downs to move the ball 10 yards or the ball is turned over rather than four in the NFL; 12 players on the Field at any one time rather than 11 in the NFL; and the possibility to score a Single (also known as a Rouge) where the ball is kicked through the back of the endzone but not through the goalposts. The Field is much bigger too – 110 yards long with 20 yard endzones rather than 100n yardsv long with 10 yard endzones as in the NFL.

Week 1 (10-12 June 2022)

Three Inter-Division match-ups saw wins for Western Division teams all of whom were at home to teams from the East. Winnipeg Blue Bombers opened their defence of the Grey Cup with a defeat of Ottawa REDBLACKS by 19-17, Calgary Stampeders won 30-27 versus Montreal Alouettes, and Saskatchewan Roughriders had an easier victory against Hamilton Tiger-Cats 30-13. The biggest victory of the weekend, however, was BC Lions huge 59-15 win at home in an all-West Division affair versus Edmonton Elks, who are still struggling under their new name. [References: 2]

Week 2 (17-19 June 2022)

Toronto Argonauts defeated Montreal Alouettes 20-19 to go top of the Eastern Division on 1-0. The two Inter-Division games saw Ottawa REDBLACKS fall to 0-2 after losing to defending Champions Winnipeg Blue Bombers 19-12. Winnipeg improved to 2-0 with the win as Calgary Stampeders joined the Blue Bombers on 2-0 with a 33-30 victory over Hamilton Tiger-Cats, who fell to 0-2. The Western Division match-up saw Saskatchewan Roughriders also move to 2-0 with a 26-16 triumph over Edmonton Elks, who lost their second game. [References: 2]

Week 3 (24-26 June 2022)

Three Inter-Division match-ups saw Montreal Alouettes improve to 1-2 with a shock 37-13 victory at Saskatchewan Roughriders who lost for the first time in 2022; British Columbia Lions improve to 3-0 with a huge 44-3 defeat of the 0-2 Toronto Argonauts; and Winnipeg Blue Bombers also improved to 3-0 as they defeated Hamilton Tiger-Cats 26-12. The Ti-Cats dropping their third straight game to open the season. The Western Division game between Calgary Stampeders and Edmonton Elks was won 30-23 by the Stamps as they improved to 3-0. [References: 2]

Weeks 4-8 (2-31 July 2022)

Winnipeg Blue Bombers marched on to 8-0 with five victories in July – at Toronto (23-22), at BC Lions (43-22), versus Calgary (26-19), at Edmonton (24-10) and at Calgary (35-28). Their nearest challengers in the West Division were British Columbia Lions on 5-1 who had defeated Ottawa 34-31 on the road and Hamilton Tiger-Cats 17-12 in Vancouver and Saskatchewan 32-17 in Regina. Calgary Stampeders were in third on 4-2, with a 49-6 victory at Edmonton. The difference between the teams was Winnipeg’s victories over the Stampeders (twice) and Lions (once). Saskatchewan Roughriders trailed on 4-4 but were still in with a shot at a crossover playoff spot with wins versus Montreal Alouettes (41-20) and Ottawa REDBLACKS (28-13) before three losses in a row to Toronto (twice) and BC Lions (once). Edmonton were at the foot of the Standings with a 2-5 record, although had defeated Montreal Alouettes 32-31 in week 6.

The Toronto Argonauts were leading the East Division on 3-2 following two wins in two weeks versus Saskatchewan Roughriders (30-24 and 31-21), while Montreal Alouettes and Hamilton Tiger-Cats were both still in the running for a playoff spot, both standing on 2-5. Montreal had defeated Ottawa 40-33 and Hamilton Tiger-Cats had gained wins over Ottawa (25-23) and Montreal (24-17), the latter a crucial game for the TiCats. Ottawa REDBLACKS languished in last place in the East on 0-6. On 31 July the previous winless Ottawa REDBLACKS created a shock with a 23-13 home victory over division leading Toronto Argonauts. [References: 2]

Week 9 (5-7 August 2022)

Winnipeg Blue Bombers remained on course for a three-peat with a 35-20 defeat of Montreal Alouettes who fell to 2-6, as the Blue Bombers marched on to a ninth consecutive victory while also remaining unbeaten. Calgary Stampeders improved to 5-2 with a 17-3 victory over Ottawa REDBLACKS who despite being only 1-7 were still only one game off a playoff spot. Toronto Argonauts extended their lead in the East with a 34-20 victory over Hamilton TigerCats who dropped to 2-6 as the Argos improved to 4-3. The final game of the weekend was a huge 46-14 defeat of Edmonton Elks by BC Lions as the Lions improved to 6-1 and the Elks, still not realistically out of a crossover playoff spot, fell to 2-6. [References: 2]

Week 10 (12-14 August 2022)

Winnipeg Blue Bombers (9-1) were defeated for the first time in the 2022 season after losing 17-20 in overtime to Montreal Alouettes who improved to 3-6. Elsewhere BC Lions (7-1) kept up the pace with Winnipeg after a thrilling 41-40 victory at Calgary Stampeders (5-3). Hamilton Tiger-Cats also improved to 3-6 in the weaker East Division after winning 34-27 at home to Toronto Argonauts (4-4). Saskatchewan Roughriders (5-4) remained on course for a crossover playoff spot with a 34-23 victory over the 2-7 Edmonton Elks. [References: 2]

Week 11 (20-21 August 2022)

With Winnipeg Blue Bombers not playing, the British Columbia Lions took the opportunity to close the gap on the West Division leaders to half a game with a 28-10 victory at Saskatchewan Roughriders, who despite falling to 5-5 were still in with a good chance of making the crossover playoff spot. Calgary Stampeders improved to 6-3 with a 22-19 victory at Toronto Argonauts meaning with the Argos on 4-5 every team in the East Division was now on a losing record. Montreal Alouettes defeated Hamilton Tiger-Cats 29-28 in another close game as the Als improved to 4-6 and the TiCats dropped to 3-7. In the other game between the two cellar-dwellers Edmonton Elks improved to 3-7 with a 30-12 triumph at the 1-8 Ottawa REDBLACKS. [References: 2]

Week 12 (26-28 August 2022)

In the East Division a win for Toronto Argonauts (37-20) over Tadhg Leader’s former team Hamilton Tiger-Cats put them back in sole possession of first place on 5-5 with Montreal Alouettes (4-6) on a bye week. Ottawa REDBLACKS (2-8) gained a second victory of the season, 25-18 at fellow strugglers Edmonton Elks (3-8) putting Edmonton well out of the West Division running. Saskatchewan Roughriders had an important 23-16 victory at B.C. Lions which put the Regina team on 6-5 and improving their chances of making the playoffs and delivering a blow to the Vancouver-based team’s hopes of a division championship after Winnipeg Blue Bombers won 31-29 at home in Manitoba versus Calgary Stampeders. Winnipeg were now on 10-1, a game and a half ahead of B.C. Lions while the Stampeders were on 6-4. [References: 2]

Week 13 (3-5 September 2022)

Ottawa REDBLACKS caused a minor shock in defeating Montreal Alouettes 38-24 in Week 13, improving to 3-8 and in the process markedly improving their playoff chances. The REDBLACKS were 1-8 two weeks previously and were now just one game behind Montreal (4-7) in the race for the second automatic playoff spot in the Eastern Division. Toronto Argonauts triumphed 28-8 at Hamilton Tiger-Cats to go 6-5 at the top of the East. Hamilton dropped to last place on 3-9.

The West Division was still Winnipeg’s to lose as the two-time defending champions improved to 11-1 with a close 20-18 victory at Saskatchewan Roughriders, with the ‘riders dropping to 6-6 but still in a crossover playoff spot. In the other game Calgary Stampeders improved to 7-4 after winning 26-18 at home to Alberta rivals Edmonton Elks who were adrift at the bottom of the West on 3-9. B.C. Lions who had a bye week were still in second on 8-2. [References: 2]

Week 14 (10-11 September 2022)

Montreal Alouettes bounced back from a shock defeat to Ottawa REDBLACKS to cause one the big upsets of the season themselves, triumphing 31-10 versus the British Columbia Lions. It was only B.C.’s third defeat of the season, and means Winnipeg Blue Bombers are virtually guaranteed the division title with seven weeks remaining after the Bombers went four wins in front with a 54-20 defeat of Saskatchewan Roughriders, who dropped to 6-7 on the year. Calgary Stampeders topped the Blue Bombers in the scoring stakes the next day however winning 56-20 at Edmonton Elks to improve to 8-4 and put a bit of light between themselves and the Regina-based ‘Riders for third place in the West. The Elks fell to 3-10 and well out of contention for the playoffs with the loss. Toronto Argonauts maintained their two-game cushion on Montreal at the top of the East Division after they won 24-19 at Ottawa who dropped to 3-9 and increasingly likely to fail to make the playoffs. As things stood after an average of 12 gamers played from 18 in total, Winnipeg Blue Bombers had clinched a playoff berth with no team as yet eliminated. [References: 2]

Week 15 (17-18 September 2022)

The big news in week 12 was Winnipeg’s second loss only all season, 31-48 at Hamilton Tiger-Cats, which left the Blue Bombers on 12-2 and the TiCats on 4-9 back in the playoff hunt. In other matches Saskatchewan Roughriders also had a shock defeat, 24-26 at home to Edmonton Elks, leaving the ‘riders on 6-8 and Edmonton on 4-10, still unbelievably mathematically still not eliminated from the playoffs. In a big game in the West Division B.C. Lions won 31-29 at Calgary Stampeders, leaving the Lions (9-3) with an edge for second place over the Stamps (8-5) [References: 2]

Week 16 (24-25 September 2022)

Montreal (6-7) kept the pressure on Toronto Argonauts in the East Division with a 23-16 victory at home to Hamilton Tiger-Cats (4-10). The Argos (8-5) won 45-15 at Ottawa REDBLACKS (3-10). In the West Division the only game played was between second placed British Columbia Lions (9-4) and third placed Calgary Stampeders (9-5) who moved level with B.C. on 18 Points with a 25-11 win in Vancouver. [References: 2] Winnipeg Blue Bombers, B.C. Lions, Calgary Stampeders and Toronto Argonauts had all with the weekends results clinched Playoff Berths. [References: 2]

Week 17 (1-2 October 2022)

Winnipeg Blue Bombers (13-2) continued tearing up the field, defeating the 6-9 Saskatchewan Roughriders 31-13. The Bombers were still not assured of the Western Division Championship, though, as B.C. Lions improved to 10-4 with a 34-19 victory over Ottawa REDBLACKS (3-11) and Calgary Stampeders (10-5) won 29-2 versus Toronto Argonauts (8-6). The Argos were joined in the Playoffs in the Eastern Division by Montreal Alouettes, who improved to 7-7 with a 25-18 triumph over Edmonton Elks (4-11). With only one playoff place remaining, and both Division Championships yet to be decided, it was all to play for with four weeks remaining in the regular season. [References: 2]

Week 18 (8-10 October 2022)

Hamilton Tiger-Cats (5-10) defeated Saskatchewan 18-14 to put some pressure on the Roughriders (6-10) for the Crossover Playoff spot. Toronto Argonauts (9-6) won 23-20 at home to British Columbia Lions (10-5) which handed the Western Division title to Winnipeg Blue Bombers who improved to 14-2 after a huge 48-11 win versus Edmonton Elks (4-12). Meanwhile Ottawa REDBLACKS (4-11) won 24-18 at Montreal Alouettes (7-8) which meant the REDBLACKS were still not mathematically eliminated. [References: 2]

Week 19 (15-16 October 2022)

Montreal Alouettes defeated Ottawa REDBLACKS 34-30 to improve to 8-8 as Ottawa slipped to 4-12. Hamilton Tiger-Cats won 35-32 at Calgary Stampeders as they improved their chances of gaining the crossover playoff spot going to 6-10, level with Saskatchewan Roughriders who had a bye week. Calgary were now on 10-6, one game behind B.C. Lions who had a shock 40-32 victory over Winnipeg Blue Bombers who were on 14-3 with only their third loss in 2022. [References: 2-2B]

Week 20 (22-23 October 2022)

Despite a big second quarter where the REDBLACKS outscored the Tiger-Cats 21-0, Hamilton came back in the 4th Quarter to win 30-27 a move a step closer to the playoffs. A big second quarter where the B.C. Lions outscored the Edmonton Elks 17-0 was the difference between the teams as the Lions secured second place in the West Division with a 31-14 victory. Despite a fourth quarter comeback by the Als where Montreal scored 17 points the Toronto Argonauts held on for the win, defeating the Alouettes 24-23 to make sure of the East Division Championship. Saskatchewan Roughriders playoff chances were dealt an almost unrecoverable blow after the Calgary Stampeders outscored the ‘Riders in each of the first three quarters to secure a 32-21 win. [References: 2-2B]

Winnipeg Blue Bombers took a 14-0 first quarter lead and led the rest of the game as they finished the regular season with a franchise-record 15-3 record. B.C. Lions finish on 12-6. 21 First quarter points were enough for the Montreal Alouettes to see out a hard-earned victory over Division Champions Toronto Argonauts. Als finish season on 9-9 in second place in the East, Argos on 11-7 in first place. Hamilton Tiger-cats qualified for the cross-over spot in the playoffs with a 23-16 victory at Ottawa REDBLACKS. Ticats finish 8-10 and REDBLACKS 4-14. Calgary Stampeders had a 36-10 victory at home over the slumping Saskatchewan Roughriders to finish the season 12-6 in third place in the West as the ‘Riders finished 6-12. [References: 2-2C]

Montreal Alouettes headed to their first Eastern Final since 2014 after a first half performance against Hamilton Tiger-Cats where they outscored the Ti-Cats 22-6, prevailing 28-17 in the end. B.C. Lions progressed to the Western Final after a 30-16 victory over Calgary Stampeders in the Western Semi-Final [References: 2]

Toronto Argonauts advanced to the Grey Cup thanks to a First Quarter where the Argos outscored the Montreal Alouettes 14-3. Toronto never relinquished the lead.

In a game that almost everything, including a Rouge (S Flintoff) and a convert kick return (T Williams) for BC Lions and Winnipeg’s second-longest playoff punt return in History (92 yards by J Grant), Winnipeg advanced to the Grey Cup to attempt the three-peat. Winnipeg Blue Bombers 28 BC Lions 20 was the Final Score. [References: 2][See Individual Games for Scorers References]

A Ouellette (Two Rushing Touchdowns) and B Bede (Three Field Goals, Two Convert Kicks and One Rouge (Single) were the heroes for Toronto Argonauts scoring 12 points each, and accounting for all the Argos points between them as Toronto ended Winnipeg Blue Bombers dreams of a dynasty with a close 24-23 victory in Regina, Saskatchewan.

The reigning Grey Cup holders Winnipeg were hoping for a three-peat but went down to A Ouellette’s five yard touchdown run and B Bede’s successful convert kick with less than four minutes remaining. The Blue Bombers had scored through two touchdowns from Quarterback D Prukop and a 102-yard punt return for Touchdown by J Grant, the longest in Grey Cup history as well as a Field Goal and two successful Convert Kicks by M Liegghio, however it was not to be as the Double Blues of Toronto took home the 109th Grey Cup. Biography

Born: Galway, Ireland, 1 March 1992.

College: International (Ireland); Lindenwood University (USA).

Professional Career: Connacht Rugby (Pro 12 Rugby); New England Free Jacks (Major League Rugby, 2019); Aviators (The Spring League 2021); Panthers Wroclaw (European League of Football 2021); Hamilton Tiger-Cats (Canadian Football League Preseason 2022)

Former Connacht Rugby player Tadgh Leader was born in Galway, Ireland. At the age of 15 he and his brother Darragh headed out to kick some Rugby balls at their local pitch on Christmas Day. His dad, a former Galwegians RFC Rugby player made a bet with them that they could not kick the ball over the bars from the halfway line. Both Tadgh and his brother Darragh won €50 each.

Tadgh went on to play Rugby Professionally for Connacht and Darragh now lives in USA where he coaches at Clemson University Tigers. Tadhg suffered a number of injuries during his last few years at Connacht and after playing in Italy he ended up studying in USA and playing for both New England Free Jacks in Major League Rugby and making his Test debut for USA Eagles Rugby Union National Team.

Tadgh was signed up to play another year of Rugby Union in 2021 when the kicker started kicking American Footballs for fun. People took notice and said he should try out for American Football teams and so he went off to San Diego where he was kicking alongside Super Bowl-winning athletes. Unsure of his own ability he asked John Carney, who has 23 years of experience kicking Footballs and Carney said he could mix it with the NFL players.

Before long Leader found himself playing for the Aviators in The Spring League in USA. The Aviatiors, one of four teams based in Indianapolis, a COVID-19 Pod and one of two Pods in the 8-team league in 2021 finished with an 0-6 record in 2021. On May 7 versus Alphas Tadgh Leader scored the first points of his American Football career kicking a Field Goal to make the score Aviators 3 Alphas 7 at Halftime.

After spending Spring in Indianapolis with the Aviators Tadgh signed for Panthers Wroclaw in the European League of Football, making his debut on August 1 in a 31-33 loss at Cologne Centurions. Tadhg scored a 35-yard Field Goal in that game to make the score 16-7 [References: 7-8] On August 22 he kicked a 52-yard Field Goal, his personal highlight in a 30-24 victory at Hamburg Sea Devils [References: 9-10]. The Hamburg game was his fourth of the ELF season [References: 11]. Panthers Wroclaw finished the season with three straight wins to finish on 6-4 and reached the Playoffs where they lost to Hamburg Sea Devils 27-30.

In March 2022 Leader signed for Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the Canadian Football League, scoring the winning Field Goal with seconds left in the Ti-Cats opening preseason game versus Montreal Alouettes. After their second and last preseason game of the 2022 season where Leader sat on the bench and did not feature, Tadgh was released. [References: 15-21]

Maritime Bowls for the McIntyre Cup [see References 1-7 for further reading]

Recap

The first three Maritime Bowls were won by three different teams – Halifax Shockers (Nova Scotia) in 2002, Saint John Wanderers (New Brunswick) in 2003 and Moncton Marshals (New Brunswick) in 2004. Thereafter a number of Dynasties took home the Terry McIntyre Cup – Saint John Wanderers in 2005 to 2006, Riverview Mustangs (New Brunswick) 2007 to 2009, and then Moncton Mustangs in 2010. There was no Champion in 2011 as the winner failed to pay their dues and then in 2012 Halifax Shockers won their second McIntyre Cup. Saint John Wanderers then won four straight from 2013 to 2016 before Moncton Mustangs won again in 2017. Saint John Wanderers won the Maritime Bowl back in 2018 and then Moncton Mustangs again won the Maritime Bowl for the McIntyre Cup in 2019. There was no League in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Of Irish interest is the Cup awarded to the winners of the Maritime Bowl is named after Terry McIntyre, one of the founders of the New Brunswick Senior Football League. McIntyre is an Irish name. Also of Interest to those reading in Ireland is that the home of Saint John Wanderers is Shamrock Park, and it is here that the Maritime Bowl was played in 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2019 with Saint John Wanderers the team with Home Field advantage due to being Regular Season Champions.

About the Maritime Football League and the McIntyre Cup

The McIntyre Cup was first played in 2002 between the winners of the New Brunswick Senior Football League and the Champions of the Nova Scotia Senior Football League. Terry McIntyre, one of the founders of the New Brunswick Senior Football League donated a Trophy, named the McIntyre Cup, which has been awarded annually to the Champions of the Maritime Bowl, the Championship Game of the Maritime Football League since 2005. The Maritime Football League was formed in 2005 by former members of the New Brunswick and Nova Scotia Senior Football Leagues.

Report

Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic the Canadian Football League chose to have no preseason, and start the league late, in August, running for 16 weeks regular season with each team playing 14 regular season matches before the playoffs.

Week 1 Recap

Saskatchewan Roughriders broke out of the blocks in the first game at home in Mosaic Stadium in over 600 days, as they put up 32 points in the first half against BC Lions. The Lions made a spirited comeback in the second half, but the Roughriders held them off to win 33-29. The other contests were not as high-scoring, Toronto making a fourth quarter comeback to defeat Calgary with a late Field Goal, and Winnipeg coming from 6-0 down in the first quarter to win 19-6 at home to Hamilton Tiger-Cats. The much-anticipated game between the Edmonton Elks, playing for the first time under their new nickname, and Ottawa REDBLACKS ended 20-16 to Ottawa with the expected Offensive showdown between Quarterbacks Trevor Harris and Matt Nichols giving way to a defensive battle where the only Touchdown was a 102-yard Interception Return by Abdul Kanneh with 5 minutes remaining to give Ottawa victory.

Week 2 Recap

Kyran Moore, a player with an Irish name was on the scoresheet for Saskatchewan Roughriders as they came from 8-7 down in the second quarter to storm to a 30-8 victory in Hamilton versus the Tiger-Cats. Moore caught a 6 yard touchdown pass from Cody Fajardo to put the Roughriders 24-8 up in the third quarter. Meanwhile the BC Lions Michael Reilly, in for starting quarterback Nathan Rourke, both Irish names, scored on a 1 yard quarterback sneak that put them 12-3 up against Calgary Stampeders. Reilly would guide the Vancouver franchise to a 15-9 victory. Meanwhile Shai Ross caught an 11 yard touchdown pass from Trevor Harris to score a consolation TD for the Edmonton Elks as they went 0-2 in a 13-30 loss at home to Montreal Alouettes. Winnipeg Blue Bombers defeated Toronto Argonauts 20-7 in the other game. After two weeks Montreal Alouettes (1-0), Saskatchewan Roughriders (2-0) and Winnipeg Blue Bombers (2-0) were undefeated.

Week 3 Recap

Edmonton Elks got their first win under their new name, 21-16 versus British Columbia Lions, dropping the Lions to 1-2. Calgary Stampeders also moved to 1-2 with a 28-22 win against Montreal Alouettes as the Alouettes fell to 1-1. Toronto Argonauts gained revenge for the previous weeks loss to Winnipeg by defeating the Blue Bombers 30-23 to join them on four points. Saskatchewan Roughriders became the team to beat by defeating the also undefeated Ottawa REDBLACKS 23-10.

Week 4 Recap

Toronto Argonauts v Edmonton Elks was postponed due to a COVID outbreak among Edmonton players, and Hamilton Tiger-Cats won 27-10 versus Montreal Alouettes to gain the Ti-Cats first win of the season. British Columbia Lions won 24-12 versus Ottawa REDBLACKS to move to four points, while Winnipeg Blue Bombers joined Saskatchewan Roughriders on 6 points with a narrow 18-16 win over Calgary Stampeders.

Week 5 Recap

Montreal Alouettes defeated Ottawa REDBLACKS 51-29 to move into a three-way tie in the East with Toronto Argonauts and Hamilton Tiger-Cats with all three teams on four points after Hamilton had defeated Toronto Argonauts 32-19. Meanwhile in the West Division Edmonton Elks won 32-20 versus Calgary Stampeders in the battle of the two Alberta teams languishing on two points at the foot of the table before the game. The big game of the weekend, however, was Winnipeg Blue Bombers 23-8 defeat of Saskatchewan Roughriders, the Riders first loss of the season, and which left the Blue Bombers in sole possession of first place in the West on eight points.

Week 6 Recap

With both teams on a 2-2 record the meeting of Toronto Argonauts and Hamilton Tiger-Cats was always likely to be close and so it proved as the Argos won by the slenderest of margins 17-16. Meanwhile the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and Saskatchewan Roughriders met again at the top of the West with the Bombers coming out best for the second week in a row, 33-9, to move into a four point lead at the top of the division. Calgary Stampeders moved level with Edmonton Elks with a 32-16 win to put both teams on four points, and British Columbia Lions joined Saskatchewan Roughriders on six points with a 45-13 rout of Ottawa REDBLACKS.

Week 7 Recap

Winnipeg Blue Bombers won for the sixth time in seven games as they defeated Edmonton Elks 37-22 to continue to set the pace in the West Division. The British Columbia Lions remain their nearest challenger on 8 points thanks to Michael Reilly’s 308 yards and two touchdown passing display versus Montreal in a 27-18 victory. The Saskatchewan Roughriders snapped a two-game losing streak to also move to 4-2 in the West with a 30-16 win against East Division leaders Toronto Argonauts. The Hamilton Tiger-Cats joined the Argos on 3-3 at the top of the East with a 23-17 triumph over Calgary Stampeders.

Week 8 Recap

Hamilton and Toronto both moved to 8 points and a joint lead in the East Division with victories over Division rivals Ottawa (24-7) and Montreal (30-27) respectively. In the only match-up in the West Division Saskatchewan defeated BC Lions 31-24 to go ahead of the team from Vancouver on 10 points, still in second behind Division leaders Winnipeg on 12 points.

Week 9 Recap

The East Division was shaken up a little in Week 9 with Montreal’s overtime win versus Hamilton, leaving the Alouettes back in touch on 6 points with with the Tiger-Cats on 8 points along with Toronto. In the West Division Winnipeg Blue Bombers stretched their lead over Saskatchewan with a 30-9 defeat of BC Lions as the Roughriders went down to Calgary Stampeders 17-23. Winnipeg now stand on 14 points, four ahead of the Roughriders with BC Lions a further 2 points back and Calgary on 6 points. Edmonton’s poor start under new name Elks continued as the lost 24-34 to Ottawa REDBLACKS in an Inter-Division game. The win put Ottawa on a similar 2-5 record as the Elks, but both teams remained rooted to the bottom of their Divisions.

Week 10 Recap

In a big week for the Argonauts the Toronto team defeated both Ottawa REDBLACKS 35-16 on Thursday and then on Monday squeaked by Hamilton Tiger-Cats 24-23 to put a bit of light between the teams as Toronto moved to 12 points, four ahead of Hamilton and Montreal who also had a narrow win (20-16) over Ottawa. In the West Division Winnipeg moved to 16 points and a three game lead as they won easily versus Edmonton 30-3 in a match-up between the Division leaders and bottom-placed team. Meanwhile Saskatchewan lost to Calgary for the second week in a row as the Stampeders won 22-19 in Regina to get back into playoff contention on 8 points, level with BC Lions and 2 behind the Roughriders.

Week 11 Recap

Edmonton put up a better display against Winnipeg after the previous weeks’ heavy defeat, but still went down 16-26 as the Blue Bombers further widened the gap at the top of the West Division to 8 Points. Calgary joined Saskatchewan on 10 points in second place in the West with a 39-10 victory in Vancouver over the Lions. In The East Division Montreal moved back into striking distance with the Argonauts as they downed the REDBLACKS 27-16 in Ottawa. The REDBLACKS remain in last place in the East on 4 points while the Alouettes claimed sole possession of second place on 10 points, two points behind Toronto.

Week 12 Recap

The top of the Standings became congested in the East Division as Montreal moved level with Toronto on 12 points after the Alouettes defeated the Argonauts 37-16. Hamilton were just 2 points back after the Tiger-Cats crushed the REDBLACKS 32-3 to remain in contention for the Division title. Ottawa slipped further out of Playoff contention with the loss. In the West Winnipeg scored another big win as they shutout BC Lions 45-0 at home in Manitoba as they moved to 20 Points, 8 Points clear at the top. Saskatchewan halted their slide, getting back to winning ways with a narrow 20-17 victory over Calgary in Alberta. The win put the Roughriders 2 Points back ahead of the Stampeders on 12 points with British Columbia 4 points back.

Week 13 Recap

In a Week of Inter-Division match-ups Calgary easily disposed of bottom-placed in the East Ottawa 26-13 to move to 12 Points and Hamilton also had an easy win over West Division last-placed Edmonton as the Tiger-Cats moved to 12 Points with a 39-23 defeat of the Elks. Toronto won 31-29 at home to BC Lions to improve to 7-4 and go 2 Points in front in the East as Montreal fell 14-19 at home to Saskatchewan, putting the Alouettes on 6-5 and joint second in the East with Hamilton. The Roughriders improved to 7-4 also and narrowed the gap to West Division leaders Winnipeg to 6 Points with the Blue Bombers on a bye week.

Week 14 Recap

With the Playoffs looming in a COVID-19 shortened regular season Hamilton stayed in the East Division title race with a 26-18 defeat of British Columbia, consigning the Lions to their sixth defeat in a row. The Tiger-Cats were on a three-game winning streak with this win which saw them overtake Montreal in second place as the Alouettes lost 21-31 at Winnipeg, assuring the Blue Bombers of the West Division title. Saskatchewan had a narrower 19-17 victory at Edmonton which secured the Roughriders a spot in the Playoffs and meant the Elks were assured of last place in the West with their 7th loss in a row. Toronto also had a narrower than expected 23-20 win at the REDBLACKS in Ottawa as they maintained first place in a tightly-contested East Division.

Week 15 Recap

With only one Week to go in the Regular Season the Argonauts wrapped up the East Division title with a convincing 31-12 victory in Toronto versus nearest challengers Hamilton Tiger-Cats. Montreal joined Hamilton on 14 points with a shock 28-14 victory at Winnipeg as the Blue Bombers, already assured of the West Division title and League Best-Record slipped up, losing for the first time in 9 games. Saskatchewan had a narrow 29-24 win at home in Regina over Edmonton Elks, ensuring the Roughriders of second place and homefield advantage in the Western Semi-Final versus Calgary Stampeders who earned third place with a 33-23 defeat of British Columbia in the Lions 7th loss in a row.

Week 16

With the Argonauts already assured of first place in the East, Edmonton Elks snapped an 8-game losing streak with a 13-7 win in Toronto in a rescheduled game from Week 4. Edmonton then went on to lose heavily to British Columbia as the Lions snapped a seven-game losing streak of their own with a 43-10 win to finish out the season in front of their own fans in Vancouver. Ottawa likewise finished off the season ending a long losing streak as the REDBLACKS won for the first time in seven games by defeating the Alouettes 19-18 in Montreal, thus depriving the Quebec team of second place in the East Division which went to Hamilton as the Tiger-Cats won 24-3 in Ontario versus the visiting Saskatchewan Roughriders. Meanwhile Winnipeg gave their fans some concern with their second loss in a row after a nine-game winning streak as the Blue Bombers fell 12-13 at Calgary Stampeders.

With the Regular Season wrapped-up Toronto had a bye into the East Division Final after winning the East title with a 9-5 Record. Second-placed Hamilton Tiger-Cats (8-6) secured home advantage for the visit of Montreal Alouettes (7-7) in the East Semi-Final while Ottawa REDBLACKS finished fourth on 3-11. In the West Division a two-game slump at the end did not prevent Winnipeg Blue Bombers (11-3) from winning the West title and Homefield advantage for the West Division Final where they would meet the winners of Saskatchewan Roughriders (9-5) and Calgary Stampeders (8-6). British Columbia Lions (5-9) and Edmonton Elks (3-11) both finished out of Playoff contention after long losing sequences for both teams mid-season.

CFL Playoffs 2021 Recap

Close games abounded in the 2021 CFL playoffs, with Hamilton Tiger-Cats 23-12 defeat of Montreal Alouettes in the Eastern Semi-Final the widest margin of victory. The Western Semi-Final was decided by a Field Goal in Overtime as Saskatchewan Roughriders won 33-30 at home to Calgary Stampeders. The Tiger-Cats went on to defeat the Argonauts in Toronto 27-19 to reach the 108th Grey Cup while Winnipeg Blue Bombers sneaked by Saskatchewan, winning 21-17 versus the Roughriders in the Western Final.

108th Grey Cup
