Recap

Eurobowl Playoffs 1988

Ireland’s Dublin Celts lost 36-12 in Austria to Graz Giants on 1 November 1987 in the Eurobowl Qualifying game. Graz Giants went on to compete in the Eurobowl Tournament proper in England from the 30 July 1988 to 7 August 1988.

The Helsinki Roosters won Eurobowl II behind the strong running of American Mike Kane who scored three touchdowns in their shock 35-33 defeat of favourites Frogs Legnano from Milan, Italy in the Semi-Finals, and then bettered that by scoring four touchdowns in the Roosters 35-14 triumph at Crystal Palace in London, in the Eurobowl II Final.

Frogs Legnano defeated Berlin Adler 28-3 in the Third Place Playoff.

National Bowl Games 1987

Qualifying for the Eurobowl Tournament 1988 was by winning the European Football League members’ National Bowl Game in 1987. Dublin Celts triumphed 43-25 over Craigavon Cowboys in Shamrock Bowl II to represent Ireland. The Celts met Austrian Bowl Champions Graz Giants in a Qualifying game after Graz won Austrian Bowl III 20-0 versus Salzburg Lions.

Italian Champions were Legnano Frogs who were victorious by 27-24 versus Seamen Milano in Super Bowl VII to win the 28-team Italian League. Berlin Adler were the German representatives after winning German Bowl IX 37-12 over Badener Greifs in the 24-team German 1. Bundesliga. British representatives London Ravens triumphed 40-23 over Manchester Allstars to take Britbowl III and the 20-team British Budweiser League National Division.

French Champions Paris Castors had a surprisingly easy 75-0 victory over Paris Jets to win the 16-team Casque d’Or for the Casque d’Or VI title. The ten team Finnish Maple League was won by Helsinki Roosters who triumphed 14-7 versus Turku Trojans in Maple Bowl VIII. Report

With one team withdrawing from four of the five Divisions and Leagues, there was little competition in the Qualifying Phase, with Stockholm Mean Machine and Marfil Alella Drags receiving a bye into the Quarter-Finals, and the South League’s six matches being superfluous as all three teams that played were guaranteed a Quarter-Final spot. This left Division 1 and 2 to be played to knock out two teams. La Corneuve Flash of France qualified from Division 1 at the expense of British Champions London O’s and Chrysler Vienna Vikings (4-0) and Marche Team Dolphins (2-2) qualified from Division 2 ahead of Bolzano Giants of Italy.

In the Quarter-Finals an All-Italian match-up saw Bergamo Lions progress at the expense of Marche Team Dolphins, and an All-Austrian tie was a win for Chrysler Vienna Vikings by a single point versus Tyrolean Raiders. The previous weekend Sweden’s Stockholm Mean Machine had triumphed 72-52 in a high-scoring thriller at Spain’s Marfil Alella Drags and La Corneuve Flash of France shutout Seaside Vipers of Switzerland 62-0.

The Semi-Finals were a lot closer as Bergamo Lions defeated La Corneuve Flash 28-12 and Chrysler Vienna Vikings defeated Stockholm Mean Machine 23-14. Eurobowl XV was a repeat victory for Bergamo Lions as they defeated Chrysler Vienna Vikings 28-11.

About Eurobowl XV 2001

With the German teams not entering and a total of 14 teams entering, including the return of the British Champions London O’s, a similar format to 2000 was employed, with the North and South Leagues kept and three other Divisions, named 1, 2 and 3. The South League and Division 2 each had four teams in their Group and The North League and Division 1 and 3 each had two teams in their Group.

The Winners of the Divisions and Leagues with two teams each entered the Quarter-Finals, and the Top three teams in the South League and Top two in Division 2 also qualified for the Quarter-Finals. Each Division and League in the Qualifying Phase played Home & Away (Home & Home in North American naming) and from the Quarter-Finals onwards the playoffs were single elimanation with one game per tie.

Report

Champions League North Region 1 was won by Stockholm Mean Machine of Sweden with a 4-0 record and Bergamo Lions also went 4-0 in winning the Champions League South Region 7. Both of those teams were seeded to the Eurobowl Semi-Finals and Champions League Final.

Eurobowl Regions 2, 3 and 5 were all won with two victories by Vienna Vikings (Austria), Aix-en-Provence Argonautes (France) and Cologne Crocodiles (Germany), but Region 6 was tougher for the winner Asnieres Molosses of France who had to rely on points differential to see off Badelona Drags of Spain.

The Wild-Cards saw Vienna Vikings defeat Aix-en-Provence Argonautes 48-28 and Cologne Crocodiles win 49-27 against Asnieres Molosses. Hamburg Blue Devils and Braunschweig Lions (1999 Runners-Up and Eurobowl Champions) entered at the Quarter-Final stage, defeating Vienna Vikings 43-16 and losing to Cologne Crocodiles (24-15) respectively.

Champions League North and South Group winners entered at the Semi-Final stage where Stockholm Mean Machine went down 12-35 to Hamburg Blue Devils and Bergamo Lions defeated Cologne Crocodiles 62-56 in Overtime in a close high-scoring encounter.

The Eurobowl XIV 2000 Final was thus between Italy’s Bergamo Lions and Germany’s Hamburg Blue Devils and again the Blue Devils had to be content to be runners-up as Bergamo Lions won 42-20. The Champions League Final between North Region 1 and South Region 7 winners took place four weeks later and again Bergamo Lions emerged thriumphant, winning 35-10 versus Stockholm Mean Machine.

About the EFAF Eurobowl and Champions League 2000

The 2000 edition of the European Federation of American Football (EFAF) Champions League and Eurobowl featured 16 teams divided into six regions for Qualification games. Two of those teams, German sides Braunschweig Lions and Hamburg Blue Devils (Eurobowl XIII 1999 Champions and Runners-Up) were given byes into the Quarter-Finals. The other two Quarter-Finalists were to be the Winners of the two Wild-Card Games between the four Regions with two teams each in the Qualification Games (Regions 2, 3, 5, 6).

There were also two Champions League regions of three teams each – Champions League North Region 1 and Champions League South Region 7, the winners of which were seeded into the Semi-Finals, and also met in the Final of a separate Competition – the EFAF Champions League 2000. The winners of the two Semi-Finals met in the EFAF Eurobowl XIV 2000. Qualification Region Groups were all to be Double Round-Robin (Home & Away – Home & Home in North American naming) and the Eurobowl Playoffs and Champions League Final were to be a single match each fixture.

Regions 4 and 8 (Atlantic Isles including Ireland; and Eastern Europe) were not represented in Eurobowl XIV 2000.

Report

Britain’s London Olympians won the Eurobowl in 1993, defeating the Amsterdam Crusaders of the Netherlands 42-21 in the Final, after triumphing 32-29 in Dusseldorf, Germany against the hometown Panther in their First Round group, and then winning 34-29 against East City Giants from Helsinki in Finland in the Semi-Finals.

The First Round pitted 11 teams in 5 groups with one group of three, where Amsterdam Crusaders and SAFIR Argonautes Aix-en-Provence (France) made light work of Leuven Lions from Belgium. In the Group decider Amsterdam Admirals disposed of the SAFIR Argonautes 54-26 in a high-scoring shootout. East City Giants had a tougher time in their group match with Uppsala 86ers of Sweden, eventually winning 40-35. The other two Groups were played over two legs, home-and-away (home-and-home to readers from USA). The Swiss champions St. Gallen Raiders lost both legs of their group to Cardkey Raiders of Netherlands and LEVIS Graz Giants of Austria likewise lost both legs of their group match with Pharaones Milano of Italy. The Intermediate Round match saw Cardkey Raiders won a close encounter with Pharaones Milano 36-34.

The Championship was an emotional one for the British team as the Final took place at Heysel Stadium, Brussels, Belgium, where one of the worst soccer tragedies occurred, involving Liverpool fans, and was played on July 3rd, the eve of American Independence Day. It was the second Eurobowl title in a row for the Olympians and they had defeated Amsterdam Admirals, winners of the two previous Eurobowls in 1990 and 1991.

Report

London Olympians won the Eurobowl (European American Football’s Super Bowl) for the second year running, defeating surprise package Bergamo Lions of Italy 26-23 in the Final in Stuttgart, with MVP Stephen Hutchison standing out on offense.

The Olympians had earlier defeated Hague Raiders of the Netherlands and East City Giants, from Helsinki in Finland. The Bergamo lions had disposed of the Paris Castors in the Quarter-Finals and Munich Cowboys in the Semis.

The Munich Cowboys had the easiest of Quarter-Finals, playing against the Qualifying team, who had to go through a Preliminary series of matches featuring the Austrian, Swiss, Danish and Belgian Champions. East City Giants, from Finland, traditionally one of the stronger countries in European American Football, easily defeated Swedish Champions Limhamn Griffins in the Quarter-Finals.

The Final was a thrilling encounter which was not decided until the last second, with Bergamo’s ace import Steve Beck, ex-University of Colorado, threatening to do the same to London that he did when upsetting heavily-fancied favourites Munich. He ran the kickoff 44 yards to the Olympians 4o yard line, and from there it was only 6 plays to the endzone. The Olympians fought back, but their next drive seemed stalled on their own 8-yard line, but American QB Leonard Valentine attempted to find Australian WR Wes Garth for a 90-yard TD, but was picked off and returned for what looked like a 98-yard Interception Return for a touchdown. The Lions were called back on a clipping penalty however, saving the Olympians’ blushes.

The next Lions drive was stalled on the 8-yard line by a London stand, and the O’s Offense took over, inspired by their defense, Valentine turned a broken play around, scrambling 91-yards for a touchdown. Bergamo were back in front 11 plays later as Beck ran in from the one yard line, and then once again, Valentine attempted to find the Aussie receiver for a big play, which this time paid off in a 74-yard TD. Back to within 2 points, the momentum shifted to the London side, and Bergamo managed a Field Goal at the end of the half, after a goalline stand by the Olympians again stopped the Lions shot, this time after a QB sack. It was to be a vital stand.

In the second half, Hutchison scored on a 16-yard run, and then, again, with a 10-yard run, to put The Olmpians nine points in front. A Bergamo TD, brought them within 3, and then with seconds left they had a long pass into Field Goal Range on third down, setting up a chance to tie the game or go for victory. Coach Joe Clark appeared to go for FG but went on second thoughts for a Touchdown, but a pitch towards Beck was mishandled and the Olympians breathed a sigh of relief, holding out for their second Eurobowl triumph in two years.
