Weeks 3-4 (31 April-9 April 2023)

After four weeks the Frisco Fighters of Texas (3-0), Massachusetts Pirates (2-0) and Tucson Sugar Skulls of Arizona (2-0) were the only undefeated teams in the IFL. Frisco had improved to 3-0 in week 3 with a close 60-55 victory at Duke City Gladiators from Albuquerque, New Mexico. Massachusetts Pirates kept pace with the Fighters in the Eastern Conference with a 59-52 defeat of Bay Area Panthers from San Jose, California in the Pirates home in New England, while Tucson Sugar Skulls picked up wins in their first two outings: 35-16 at San Diego Strike Force in a low-scoring game for Indoor rules in week 3, and a 54-48 win at Arizona Rattlers in an Arizona rivalry game.

The Eastern Conference’s Green Bay Blizzard and Sioux Falls Storm both picked up their first wins of the season in victories over Iowa Barnstormers: the Wisconsin-based Blizzard winning 44-25 at home in week 3 and the South Dakota-based Storm 54-24 at home in week 4. ABOUT THE IFL 2022

For the 2023 season the Indoor Football League lost the Bismarck Bucks but added the Tulsa Oilers to remain a 14-team league, divided into two Conferences (East and West) of seven teams each. Northern Arizona Wranglers are the defending Champions.

The Indoor Football League is a Major American Football League playing Reduced Numbers (8v8) Arena Indoor American Football in USA. Previously AAA, it has since the demise of the Arena Football League (a Major League) after the 2019 season, expanded its Geographic Reach, and has taken the AFL’s position as the Major League in Indoor/Arena Football. This version of American Football is most popular in Mexico, hence names like Tucson Sugar Skulls. LEXFA (Liga Extrema de Futbol Arena) in Mexico is the Major League in Mexico (and also one of four Mexican Majors)

Recap

Of interest to Irish readers in the LEXFA Lega Extrema de Football Americano in 2022 was the Peleadores team – Spanish for Fighters – the team were originally called Fighting Irish and continue to use the Notre Dame Fighting Irish Leprechaun Mascot Logo. Peleadores played in Division 4 in 2022, and although the six divisions from the Premiere down to Division 5 are organised according to ability there were a number of Inter-Division games during the regular season for all 42 teams. [References: 1-6]

Peleadoes looked certain of a playoff spot after going 2-2 in their first four games but lost their lastv two to finish the regular season 2-4 and in sixth place, just about doing enough to qualify for the Division 4 playoffs ahead of Sooners who had also finished 2-4 after winning their final two games. Peleadores scored eight more points than Sooners (124 to 116) to make the playoffs. [References: 5]

Once in the playoffs the Peleadores found form at the right time, winning their Round 1 match-up with Pig Machine 21-20. Then in Round 2 they met Division Title Winners Titanes (4-2) again winning by a slim margin, 33-30. Now in the Finale of Division 4 they met Orcas who after losing their first three games were now on a five-game winning streak, including two playoff victories, but once again the team which referenced the Irish Community in Mexico came good, winning the Division 4 Championship by a Final Score of 29-24. [References: 7-9]

The overall title was won by Legends who triumphed over Supermans Bizarros by 29-18 to take the Premiere title. Division 1 went to Dragones Aztecas who defeated Jugosos 40-14; Division 2 winners were Gavilanes who won 33-27 versus Tigres Coacalco; Division 3 Champions were Black Demons who won 28-14 versus Carneros Toluca Senior; and Division 5 honours went to Puercos Salvajes who beat Centauros 40-14. Recap

Quad City Steamwheelers from Moline, Illinois, repeated as af2 ArenaCup Champions thanks to a 55-51 victory over Richmond Speed from Virginia in ArenaCup 2001. Ironman Scott Hvistendahl hauled in a 3 yard Touchdown Reception from Quarterback Jay McDonagh with 10 seconds remaining to give the Steamwheelers the victory. A little over a minute earlier Kevin Harvey had caught a 13-yard reception from QB Bob Bees in the endzone to give Richmond a 48-44 lead in a rollercoaster game where the lead changed hands 16 times with neither team recording back-to-back scores. The game was played in front of 8,261 fans in Moline, Illinois.

Quad City Steamwheelers had finished the regular season National Conference Midwest Division Champions on 15-1 before defeating Macon Knights (10-6, American Southwest) 80-55 in the Quarter-Final Round and Carolina Rhinos (12-4, American Northeast) 35-16 in the Semi-Final Round. Richmond Speed’s path to the ArenaCup included posting a 13-3 record to win the American Conference Northeast Division title before knocking out Birmingham Steeldogs (12-4, National South Central) 67-60 in the Quarter-Final Round and in an exciting overtime game overcoming Tennessee Valley Vipers from Hunstsville, Alabama (14-2, National South Central) in the Semi-Final Round. Other teams to make the Playoffs were American Southeast Champions Tallahassee Thunder (11-5) and National Midwest runners-up Tulsa Talons (13-3).

About Arena Football League af2

The Arena Football League was the original Indoor or Arena American Football League, established in 1986. After the court ruling in 1998 that its patent (awarded in 1989) only referred to the rebound nets either side of the goalposts, everything else was football, and not under copyright, as it was already in the common sphere.

This opened the door to rival Indoor Leagues, and in an attempt to see them off Arena Football League created Arena Football 2 (af2) in 2000, an official Minor League. This was an over-expansion and coupled with the debts from the court case related to the patent, it incurred a legacy debt that left the League in no position to continue after 2019.

For the second af2 season in 2001, the league consisted of 28 franchises, in two conferences (American and National). The American Conference (East Coast) had two divisions of seven teams each: Northeast and Southeast and the National Conference (Central USA) also had two divisions of seven teams (Midwest and South Central). The top two teams in each division qualified for the playoffs, seeded 1-8.

ABOUT ARENA / INDOOR FOOTBALL

Indoor Football, also known as Arena Football was developed in 1986 as an 8v8 form of Indoor American Football. After an initial few seasons where the game was developed with a 4 team league, a full seasons League with eventually over a dozen teams was developed in the 1990 which was considered by the Wall Street Journal to be a fifth major.

The Arena Football League over-expanded in the 2000s with a Minor League, and its importance (and number of teams) waned since it first experienced financial diffulty in 2009, and it ceased operations after the 2019 season due to the legacy debt incurred.

There is now, however, Indoor Football Leagues all over America, all of which would now be considered Minor League or Semi-Pro (AAA, AA, or even A)

Indoor Football is played on a 50-yard field with two 8-yard endzones, and teams have 5 downs (attempts) to reach the endzone or the ball is turned over. 3 of those downs must be passing plays, making Indoor Football highly explosive and high scoring.

The main difference between Arena Football & Indoor Football is the rebound nets either side of the goalposts in Arena Football, which is the only part of the original patent given to the Arena Football League in 1989, that a subsequent ruling in 1998 ruled was copyright, the rest being Football already in other leagues.

The first AFL test game was held on 27 April 1986 in Rockford, Illinois between the Rockford Metros and Chicago Politicians, and following positive public response the first “showcase game” in Chicago in front of 8,200 fans on February 27, 1987, where Miami Vice triumphed 33-30 over Chicago Bruisers. About X League 2022

An all new start for the Legends Football League (also known as the Lingerie Football League) in 2022 as a rebrand to the X League and eight new teams sees an eight-week schedule with one game per week (for a total of two games per team) before the top four reach the playoffs and the X Cup 2022. The X League is a rival league to the Women’s National Football Conference, the NFL of Women’s Football, which plays for the IX Cup. The big differences are that the X League is 7v7 Arena Indoor Football versus the WNFC’s standard 11v11 Outdoor American Football, and the lack of protective clothing or knee pads that the X League players wear, although the 2022 edition of this Alternative League sees the gimmick of women wearing little in the way of clothing covered up another little bit more. It is also positioning itself almost entirely in the Western USA, whereas the other AAA Alternative League to the NFL/WNFC in 2022, the USFL is based almost entirely in the Eastern USA. About the SIFL 2011

The 2011 season was the third, and last, season of the Southern Indoor Football League. The season featured 16 teams, aligned in five divisions accross the Southern States of USA and up into Pennsylvania in the Northeast. For 2012 the SIFL merged with American Indoor Football Association to form American Indoor Football. The SIFL was an Arena Indoor Football League – 8v8 American Football played Indoors on a converted Ice Hockey rink with 50 yard field and two 8 yard endzones. Teams have five downs (attempts) in which to score (three of which must be passing plays) before the ball is turned over.

In the Western Conference Arizona Rattlers continued blazing through ther Arenas, winning 67-20 at home to Vegas Knight Hawks, to go 4-0 at the top, while Vegas fell to 2-2. In the closest, high-scoring game of the season, San Diego Strike Force finally got a W in the Win column with a 67-66 victory over the Tucson Sugar Skulls (1-2). Duke City Gladiators were another team to finally get a win, 50-28 versus Bay Area Panthers in Albuquerque to go 1-3, as the Panthers dropped to 1-3 also. [References: 1-16]

Week 6 Recap (15-18 April 2022)

The Western Conference leaders Arizona Rattlers defeated San Diego Strike Force 66-33 to go 5-0, as the Strike Force fell to 1-4. Week 7 Recap (23-24 April 2022)

Green Bay Blizzard’s Jack Sheehan, surely an Irish connection there somewhere, scored the team’s opening touchdown on an 11-yard run, and passed for another in the first quarter, with Keyshaun Taylor catching two TD’s in the second quarter and Toren Young running in a fifth as the Blizzard went into the break 34-0 up at halftime only to see Vegas Knight Hawks pull back to 34-25 in the second half before the buzzer sounded. For a full report click on the game link in the Schedule. Blizzard remain 2-4 at the foot of the Eastern Conference.

Elsewhere there were victories for Sioux Falls Storm (49-27 versus Bay Area Panthers); Quad Cities Steamwheelers (36-17 at Bismarck Bucks); defending Champions Massachusetts Pirates who take sole ownership of the Eastern Conference lead with a 36-22 defeat of Iowa Barnstormers; Frisco Fighters who defeated Duke City Gladiators 42-41 in a close Southwest rivalry match-up and Tucson Sugar Skulls who won 72-62 versus Northern Arizona Wranglers in an all-Arizona shootout. [References: 16-21]

Week 8 Recap (29 April-1 May 2022)

Massachusetts Pirates dropped their second game of the season 44-46 to Vegas Knight Hawks to fall to 4-2 as they just failed to take advantage of Frisco Fighters 35-49 loss to Arizona Rattlers as the Fighters fell to 5-2. The two results meant the Eastern Conference title race was blown wide open with Quad Cities Steamwheelers from Illinois defeating Green Bay Blizzard from Wisconsin 49-31 and Sioux Falls Storm from South Dakota winning 50-47 versus Iowa Barnstormers. With both the Steamwheelers and Storm improving to 4-3 and the Barnstormers on 3-3 there was no more than one loss between the top five teams in the East. [References: 1-16]

In the Western Conference Arizona Rattlers continue to march on, going to 6-0 with that victory over Eastern Conference leaders Frisco Fighters. Northern Arizona Wranglers (4-2) made it an Arizona 1-2 with a 65-34 defeat of Bay Area Panthers (1-6) while Tucson Sugar Skulls 42-41 win over Duke City Gladiators (2-5) from Albuquerque in New Mexico meant it was 1-2-3 for Arizona. San Diego Strike Force moved above the Gladiators with a 38-28 victory over North Dakota’s Bismarck Bucks (3-4) in an Inter-Conference match-up. ABOUT the IFL 2022

For the 2022 season the Indoor Football League lost the Louisville Xtreme and Spokane Shock but added Bay Area Panthers (San Jose, California), Quad Cities Steamwheelers (Moline, Illinois), San Diego Strike Force (California) and Vegas Knight Hawks (Las Vegas, Nevada) to incease to a 14-team league, divided into two Conferences (East and West) of seven teams each.

NAL Championship (13 August 2022)

Albany Empire won the 2022 NAL Championship in blistering fashion, reeling off 41 unanswered points after Carolina Cobras took a 7-6 lead. Albany quarterback Sam Castronova fired six touchdown passes at the appropriately-named MVP Arena in New York State to make the Empire back-to-back NAL Champions. Even though Albany were 47-7 up after three quarters the never-say-die Cobras punched back with a Zack Brown Fumble Recovery in the Endzone and a 38-yard Adam Smith Touchdown catch but time ran out for the Cobras as the Empire prevailed 47-20 thanks to a 3-yard TD run by Castronova less than two minuters into the game; a catch from Aaron Wascha for a 13-7 Albany lead after a 3-yard Kendrick Ings TD pass; Aaron Wascha scored a second TD catch and another TD pass from Castronova as well as a 10-yard Darius Prince TD put Albany 34-7 ahead. Two more TD passes by Castronova for Albany put the game beyond doubt: to Marquel Wade a lineman Cornelius Lewis to give the Empire an unassailable 47-7 lead at the end of the third quarter. 2022 National Arena League Preview

After a reduced schedule of 8 games in 2021 due to Covid-19 concerns, the National Arena League has scheduled a full 14-week schedule with each team playing 12 games for 2022. Jersey Flight have left the league after finishing 2-6 in 2021 and have been replaced by San Antonio Gunslingers, giving the NAL a footprint in Texas. Albany Empire shall be defending the title they won in 2021 with a 7-1 record and two 2-Touchdown victories in the playoffs: 79-62 versus Columbus Lions in the Championship Game after a 55-41 defeat of Carolina Cobras in the Semi-Finals. With four of the six teams playing in the postseason playoffs, each team shall fancy their chances of making it beyond the regular season, with San Antonio and Jacksonville Sharks (2-6 in 2021) targetting the playoff places won by Orlando Predators (4-4 in 2021) and Carolina Cobras (3-5 in 2021). Columbus Lions (6-2 in 2021) and Albany Empire should be favourites to reach the playoffs again.

ABOUT THE NAL

The National Arena Football is a AAA (Third Level) American Football League based primarily in the Northeastern & Southern States of the USA. It is one of 2 AAA Arena Indoor Football Leagues in the USA, the other being the Indoor Football League (Midwest and West).

ABOUT ARENA / INDOOR FOOTBALL

Indoor (also known as Arena) Football plays an 8 v 8 version of American Football on a converted Ice Hockey Rink 50-yards long with 2 10 -yard endzones. Teams have 5 downs (attempts) to score or the ball is turned over – 3 of which must be passing plays. It is therefore a higher scoring game than standard 11 v 11 American Football. The main difference between Arena Football and Indoor Football is that there is no rebound net either side of the goalposts in Indoor Football. Arena Football rules allow the ball stay in play when it comas back off the rebound nets.

About LEXFA

LEXFA – Lega Extrema de Football Americano – is the biggest Arena / Indoor Football League in the World. It comprises four to five divisions of Arena Indoor Football teams in Mexico, with the Divisions based on level of play as in Soccer rather than Geographical as in American and Canadian Football.

Arena, also known as Indoor Football is an 8v8 version of American Football played in converted Ice Hockey rinks or other Arenas with a 50 yard field and two 8 yard endzones. Instead of having 4 downs (attempts) to reach 10 yards or the ball is turned over, Arena Indoor Football employs a five downs to score system of play, with three of those downs having to be passing plays.
