About the CAAFA

The Central Asian American Football Association was set up in 2002 by the intrepid American with the Irish name, Tom Kelly. Having previously tried to promote American Football in the USSR in 1979, he had more success in 2002 starting teams at the American University of Khyrgyzstan (AUK) and KIMEP in Kazakhstan, two neighbouring Central Asian Republics.

Following a couple of Flag American Football games between the two teams and a few games versus Inter (International) and World teams featuring players from Turkey, Italy, Russia, USA, Canada, Afghanistan and Turkmenistan and also a game against the US Embassy in Kyrgyzstan, Tom Kelly managed to get some equipment in from America to set up two teams: Barsy Leopards, based in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, and Almaty KIMEP Titans in Kazakhstan.

After four years (2005 to 2008) playing a series of games versus each other every Spring and Autumn, there emerged a third team: Bishkek Golden Eagles. With the addition of a third team in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan National University (KNU) in Autumn 2008, a three-team tournament was organised in Bishkek, between the Leopards, Golden Eagles and KNU. Played over Labour Weekend, KNU won the inaugural Bishkek (Kyrgyzstan) Tournament, with Bishkek Barsy Leopards second and Bishkek Golden Eagles third.

Report

In 1979 American Promoter Tom Kelly, as Irish a name as your will find, approached the USSR with a proposal to form an American Football League in what was then the USA’s biggest enemy. With the Cold War not showing signs of thawing, the functionaries in the Kremlin turned down the proposal. By 1989, however, with Gorbachev in power the thaw was in full swing, and the first American Football match was played in Moscow, between two College teams: The “Stars” beat the “Bummers” took place in the Spring of 1989 in the Dynamo Arena.

By July 1989 there had been formed a team in Moscow – the Moscow Bears (also known as Bruins) and by September 17, 1989 they had played their first match, a 77-6 loss in West Berlin to a more experienced German team. In November 1989, The first match between two Soviet teams: Moscow Bears and Kharkov Atlantis (now in Independent Ukraine), was won 26-0 by Moscow Bears. This meeting led to the formation of the first Union of American Football in USSR. By the end of the month, however, disagreements had arisen, and the formation of an Independent Association of American Football in USSR soon had the approval of the European Football League, then the governing body of the sport in Europe, and most teams in USSR were now members of the new Association.

In November 1990, after a couple more International Friendlies and a tour of USA where the Moscow Bears defeated the semi-professional Charlotte Bandits, the first two tournaments were played in USSR, with Moscow Swans defeating Moscow Eagles. The defeat of the Americans at their own game created a massive interest in the press in the new sport, and by February 1991 the first “Snow Bowl” was played between five teams: Moscow Bears, Moscow Swans, Moscow Eagles, Chelyabinsk Federals and Donetsk Bisons, with Moscow Bears winning the Snow Bowl undefeated.

The Snow Bowl is considered a precursor to the first American Football Championship of the USSR which started that spring, featuring six teams: Moscow Bears, Moscow Swans, Caspian Sphinxes, Kharkov Atlantis, Donetsk Skiffs (Scythians?) and Minsk Zubrs (Bison). Moscow Bears were Champions of this, the only full American Football Championship of the USSR, watched by a guest invitee: the President of Severn Vale Royals American Football Team from Gloucester, England. In March of 1991, Moscow Swans made more Russian American Football history, representing the USSR in the Eurobowl (European Champions Cup) where they were defeated 44-14 in the first round by Finland’s Helsinki Roosters.

By now the USSR had broken up and been replaced by the CIS – Commonwealth of Independent States – and a new competition, the CIS Championship was born. Kharkov Atlantis appear to be named after the ancient Greek myth of Atlantis, which was beyond the “Pillars of Hercules” which has been variously described as being beyond the Straits of Gibraltar with Ireland and Cornwall mentioned as possible places for Atlantis due to Irish and Cornish tin showing up in Ancient Greek Bronze objects (Bronze is an alloy of Copper and tin). Atlantis has also been suggested as being situtated in the Black Sea, where Kharkov is situated, beyond the Dardanelles between Mainland Europe and Asiatic Turkey. [References: 4-5]

1992 WLAF Season Recap

With the Raleigh-Durham Skyhawks having moved to Columbus, Ohio and renamed the Ohio Glory, and the New York / New Jersey Knights becoming simply the New York Knights, there was little change in franchises for the second season of the WLAF. The big surprise in 1992 was the struggling fortunes of the three European teams, so dominant in 1991.

Barcelona Dragons, despite starting strong with a 5-1 record after six weeks, then lost four in a row to finish off the season 5-5, but still European Champions after the London Monarchs and Frankfurt Galaxy posted dismal 2-7-1 and 3-7 records respectively. Defending Champions London in particular were a disappointment to their fans.

The WLAF North American East Division was won comfortably by Orlando Thunder on an 8-2 record despite a strong finish by the New York Knights who won their last six games after starting 0-4. Montreal Machine (2-8) disappointed their fans who had hoped to see the team at the World Bowl which was to be held at the Olympic Stadium in the Quebec city. Ohio Glory managed one win, which was one more than the team they replaced, the Raleigh-Durham Skyhawks.

The North American West Division, however, took over from the European Division as the dominant division, with all three teams posting a winning record: Sacramento Surge (8-2), Birmingham Fire (7-2-1) and San Antonio Riders (7-3).

Only the top two could make the playoffs however, and Sacramento took a five-game winning streak into the playoffs where they met the Dragons who were on a four-game losing streak. In the Playoffs Barcelona Dragons almost pulled off a shock, going down 15-17 to Sacramento Surge, while Orlando Thunder went into the World Bowl as favourites after a 45-7 demolition of Birmingham Fire in the other Playoff game.

The World Bowl itself provided an exciting end to the first era of the WLAF, as Sacramento Surge came from 17-6 down at halftime to score two touchdowns in the fourth quarter to stun Orlando Thunder 21-17. Orlando Thunder’s Quarterback, the Irish-named Mitchell, himself threw two touchdowns in the game.(For a Scoring Summary and Match report of the World Bowl ’92 please click on the game itself in the Playoff Schedule to be brought to the game recap).

About the World League of American Football

The World League of American Football was started by the National Football League in 1991 as a Development League, one level below the NFL itself. The WLAF’s first two seasons (1991 and 1992) featured 10 teams – Six in the United States of America, one in Canada (Montreal Machine) and three in Europe (Spain’s Barcelona Dragons, Germany’s Frankfurt Galaxy) and England’s London Monarchs). The League was divided into three Divisions: European, North American East and North American West, with the three division winners and one Wild-Card team (the runner-up with the next best record) qualifying for the playoffs which culminated in the World Bowl. After two seasons the NFL shelved the League and brought it back in 1995 as a six team Europe-only League.

Recap

With the Schedule running late due to the late arrival of Coahuila, the four divisions were merged into two conferences, with just the conference champions going forward to the Final. This left both Chihuahua and Quintana Roo bitterly disappointed, as having won all their games they were left to play in the consolation 3rd Place Playoff having lost out on Points Difference to ONEFA IPN and FADEMAC respectively. FADEMAC, the team from Estado de Mexico, won the Final 21-0 versus ONEFA IPN, the team from the National Polytechnic Institute. The Consolation Final was won by Quintana Roo 15-0 versus Chihuahua. The Irish Institute is based in Naucalpan, Estado de Mexico.

Recap

Jyväskylä Jaguars deservedly won the 1998 SAJL Finnish American Football League Naiset (Women’s) league, triumphing 24-0 versus Helsinki 69ers in the Final after going 9-1 during regular season play. The 69ers had finished second on 7-3, with Oulu Northern Lights, from up near the Arctic Circle finishing on 6-4 and Helsinki East City Giants fourth on 5-5 also qualifying for the playoffs. Kuopio Kojootit had finished 3-7, and Vantaa Taft (Terrikulan American Football Team) appear to have forfeited all but one Tournament’s games, finishing on 0-10, although the two games they played they did not disgrace themselves.

About the SAJL Naiset (Women’s) League

Recap

Dundee Storm won the first two Scottish Flag Football Association Junior Bowl Tournaments in 2001, defeating Galloway in the West Coast Offense Bowl Final on 9 May, then hosts Coatbridge Colts by two points in the Capital Bowl in Edinburgh a week later. Coatbridge Colts got revenge in July with a 54-18 demolition of Dundee Storm in the Independence Bowl hosted by Dundee. The Final Bowl of the Season was the Tartan Bowl III in Inverness in August, won by Inverness Rockets with a 3-0 record.

Some of teams were travelling all weekend to get to the games and back, especially Scalloway Vikings from the Shetland Isles, who competed in the Capital Bowl in Coatbridge High School in Edinburgh.

The Finals Day in early October produced a thrilling Final with Galloway Eagles defeating Dundee Storm 46-37 to claim the SFFA Title. The Eagles had triumphed convincingly in the Semi-Finals 40-6 over Paisley Panthers the Grangemouth Broncos had defeated the Dundee Storm 55-26 to reach the Final where Galloway went “all the way” and took the Trophy.

About Grangemouth

Grangemouth is Scotland’s biggest port, having been founded as the finish point of the Clyde-Forth Canal. Located near Falkirk in East Scotland, it is famous also for the art-statues of the two Kelpies, mythological Horses which can take Human form from Celtic Folklore. The artist who created the two giant artworks at the entrance to thde Helix Park, however, took inspiration more from the two work horses which drew each canal boat. Scotland was colonised by Gaelic-speakers from Ireland in 500 AD, although Gaelic is now only widely spoken in the Highlands and Western Isles. [References: 7-9]

Recap

Joe Clancy, a player with an Irish name from Merrimack, Massachusetts, jumped at the opportunity to play in the FXFL in his hometown after playing a season out of college at Orebro Black Knights in Sweden. The Boston Brawlers played out of Harvard Stadium, but unfortunately lost all four games in the FXFL in 2014. Brooklyn Bolts won the League with a 4-0 record and Omaha Mammoths finished second on 3-1. Florida Blacktips, the other team in the league finished 0-2, playing as a road team.

About the FXFL

The FXFL (Fall Experimental Football League) was a follow-on from The Stars Football League of 2011 to 2013, and was like a Spring Developmental Football League but played in the Fall. Its’ first season in 2014 featured four teams spread accross three regions of the USA: Boston Brawlers and Brooklyn Bolts in the Northeast, Omaha Mammoths in the Midwest and Florida Blacktips in the South.
