Recap

The Southern Plains Football League featured 14 teams divided in two divisions in 2021, with one team of interest to Irish readers: the Med City Freeze, based in Mayo High School, Rochester, Minnesota, Mayo being one of Ireland’s traditional 32 counties [20]. The Freeze started the 8-game regular season with a 38-0 win at home in Mayo High School versus Buffalo Ridge Wildcats, an Inter-Division Game. The Freeze followed this up with a crushing 64-0 victory at Madison Warriors in Wisconsin. Week 3 saw Med City improve to 3-0 with a 22-10 at Albert Lea Grizzlies in Forest City, Iowa. The Freeze suffered their first defeat in Week 4, 0-10 at home to North Iowa Bucks but remained in the Playoff spots [2].

A bye week for the Freeze followed in week 5 and the last weekend in May was a rest week for the whole league. Back into action in Week 6 at the beginning of June, the Med City Freeze defeated Central Iowa Chiefs 17-0 to improve to 4-1. In Week 7 the Freeze suffered their second defeat of the season in an Inter-Division game, 8-32 at Des Moines Blaze in Iowa, eventual Champions of the SPFL in 2021. A crucial game followed with fellow Division Championship hopefuls Midwest Rampage, with Med City winning 6-0 at the Rampage in Iowa Falls, Iowa. The Freeze were now 5-2 and their Final match of the season was another crucial game against the 4-3 Minneapolis Warriors. The Freeze won 20-12 at Woodbury School in Minneapolis to finish 6-2 at take the East Division title on Head-to-Head over Midwest Rampage [2].

The Freeze were to play Midwest Rampage again in the Playoff Quarter-Finals and this time it was to be at home in Mayo High School. Med City were again victorious over their rivals winning 27-16 to advance to the Semi-Finals where they travelled to Des Moines, Iowa to take on the Blaze, losing 14-20, their second loss to the eventual Champions in 2021 as the Blaze took the Championship Game in Lake Benton, Minnesota 34-21 versus the undefeated Sioux Empire Crusaders from Harrisburg, South Dakota [3-4].

Recap

The Major Alternative Football Leagues of 2021 were The Spring League which kicked off its 5th season this year, with a major expansion, adding a second hub city and four teams to its schedule, the European League of Football, Japan X-League X1 Super, and the Canadian Football League.

The Linemen won TSL North in Indianapolis with a 5-1 record and the Jousters were Champions of TSL South in Houston with a 4-2 record. In a close Mega Bowl Linemen defeated Jousters 26-23 [13-14]. Tadhg Leader, former Connacht Rugby player, who was born in Ireland, played kicker for the Aviators who finished 0-6 in the TSL North [8-10].

Following the TSL season, Tadhg Leader moved on to play for Panthers Wroclaw of Poland in the European League of Football, along with a young Tallaght, South Dublin County native Kevin Mayo. The Panthers finished the season 6-4 in the ELF North but lost the Semi-Final 27-30 at Hamburg Sea Devils, who finished runners-up to ELF South Champions Frankfurt Galaxy (9-1) who won the ELF Championship Game 32-30 in an even closer game than the TSL Mega Bowl [7-8].

By the Fall the Japan X-League had kicked off and the 6-1 Fujitsu Frontiers upset the 7-0 Panasonic Impulse 24-20 in the Rice Bowl [4-5]. This was the first year the JXL had sole ownership of the Rice Bowl, previously the X-League Champions contested the Rice Bowl with the College Champions in Japan.

The Canadian Football League, the biggest of the Major Alternative Football Leagues played a covid-shortened 14-game schedule, with newly renamed Edmonton Elks struggling to a 3-11 record, worst in the CFL. The big news on the Football field however was Winnipeg Blue Bombers who went 11-3 in winning the CFL West before triumphing 33-25 against Hamilton Tiger-Cats (8-6) who had upset CFL East Champions Toronto Argonauts 27-19 in the Eastern Final [2].

Tadhg Leader – Irish-born Player (Panthers Wroclaw ELF and Aviators TSL)

Former Connacht Rugby player Tadhg Leader was born in Galway, Ireland. At the age of 15 he and his brother Darragh headed out to kick some Rugby balls at their local pitch on Christmas Day. His dad, a former Galwegians RFC Rugby player made a bet with them that they could not kick the ball over the bars from the halfway line. Both Tadhg and his brother Darragh won €50 each.

Tadhg went on to play Rugby Professionally for Connacht and Darragh now lives in USA where he coaches at Clemson University Tigers. Tadhg suffered a number of injuries during his last few years at Connacht and after playing in Italy he ended up studying in USA and playing for both New England Free Jacks in Major League Rugby and making his Test debut for USA Eagles Rugby Union National Team.

Tadhg was signed up to play another year of Rugby Union in 2021 when the kicker started kicking American Footballs for fun. People took notice and said he should try out for American Football teams and so he went off to San Diego where he was kicking alongside Super Bowl-winning athletes. Unsure of his own ability he asked John Carney, who has 23 years of experience kicking Footballs and Carney said he could mix it with the NFL players.

Before long Leader found himself playing for the Aviators in The Spring League in USA. The Aviatiors, one of four teams based in Indianapolis, a COVID-19 Pod and one of two Pods in the 8-team league in 2021 finished with an 0-6 record in 2021. On May 7 versus Alphas Tadhg Leader scored the first points of his American Football career kicking a Field Goal to make the score Aviators 3 Alphas 7 at Halftime.

After spending Spring in Indianapolis with the Aviators Tadhg signed for Panthers Wroclaw in the European League of Football, making his debut on opening day in a 55-39 victory over Cologne Centurions. [References: 8-10]

Kevin Mayo – Irish Player (Panthers Wroclaw ELF)

Kevin Mayo, who is from Tallaght, South Dublin Co. in Ireland, and had previously played for the South Dublin Panthers in the American Football Ireland League joined the Panthers Wroclaw at the tail end of the season after being picked up by North Park University in Chicago, an NCAA Division III College.

About

Major League Football (MLF) is a Professional American Football League intended to start play in Fall 2022, which would put it in direct competition with the National Football League (NFL) which is the 100-year old established Professional American Football League, which has to date seen off all challenges to its position as the number 1 Professional League, although it had to absorb a successful alternative in the American Football League (AFL) of the 1960s (see https://eirball.ie/national-football-league/ for more details on the NFL and https://eirball.ie/american-football-leagues/ for more details on Alternative Leagues to the NFL).

Some Leagues never even start, and considering the Major League Football of 2022 has not yet announced team names, stadia, ownership groups or any other details such as media partners and player tryouts as of 7 January 2022 and is intending to play in the Fall of 2022 it is most likely to fall into this latter category. It has announced it is starting with 32 teams, just like the Trinity Professional Spring Football League which also named only cities and states where teams were to be based and no other details. (see https://eirball.ie/failed-american-football-leagues/ )

Major League Football is intending to go directly head-to-head with the NFL in 14 Markets as well as in the Fall. These markets are: New Jersey (NFLs Jets and Giants), Philadelphia (NFLs Eagles), Miami (NFLs Dolphins), Atlanta (NFLs Falcons), Cleveland (NFLs Browns), Chicago (NFLs Bears), Cincinnati (NFLs Bengals), New Orleans (NFLs Saints), Maryland (NFLs Baltimore Ravens), North Carolina (NFLs Carolina Panthers), Dallas (NFLs Cowboys), Houston (NFLs Texans), Los Angeles (NFLs Rams and Chargers) and San Jose (NFLs San Francisco 49ers). [References: 27]

In addition to those 14 NFL markets, the MLF is intending to put teams in Oakland, San Diego and St. Louis which were all vacated by NFL teams recently, and 10 markets which previously held Alternative League teams: New York (teams in USFL, XFL), Virginia (UFL), Orlando (USFL, WLAF, UFL, XFL), Alabama (Birmingham: USFL, WLAF, AAF, XFL), Sacramento (WLAF, CFL USA, UFL), Austin (AFA), San Antonio (USFL, WLAF, CFL USA), Nebraska (Omaha, UFL), Memphis (USFL, XFL) and Oklahoma (USFL) [References: 3-26]

The last 5 markets the MLF is intending to put teams in have never had either a Major Alternative Football League team or National Football League team in the modern era. These markets are: South Carolina, West Virginia, Mississippi, Kentucky and Arkansas.

Recap

Aarhus Tigers dominated the 2000 DAFF Danish National League in American Football, winning all four games they played during the regular season. Roskilde Kings finished 3-2 and Copenhagen Towers, on their return to the league from playing in Europe, finished 3-3. All three teams made the playoffs, as did the Herlev Rebels, who found life tough in the four team Nationalligaen after going 2-4 during the 7 team 1999 season. The Rebels lost all five games they played (two games between Aarhus Tigers versus Herlev Rebels and Roskilde Kings were not played due to the Tigers competing in Europe), and failed to score a single point.

In the Playoffs Aarhus Tigers swept aside Herlev 50-0 before also scoring almost 50 points against Roskilde Kings in Mermaid Bowl XII. Roskilde Kings had defeated Copenhagen Towers 20-7 in the other Semifinale before coming under the power of Aarhus Tigers in the Bowl, Aarhus champions on a scoreline of 49-6. It was Aarhus Tigers third Mermaid Bowl triumph in a row and fourth overall (their first had been in 1991.

About DAFF Danish National League 2000

The Danish National League (American Football) was reduced from 7 teams in 1999 to 4 in 2000. The Copenhagen Towers returned to the league after playing a Europe-only schedule in 1999, replacing the Kronborg Knights who had folded after losing their third Mermaid Bowl in a row. Odense Swans, Esbjerg Hurricanes and Vejle Saints were all relegated to the 1. Division for 2000.

After the 2000 season the Danish National League (Dansk Nationalligaen) was increased to six teams with the promotion of Fredericksund Oaks and Greve Monarchs for the 2001 season.

Report

With the United States Football League version 2 starting in 2022, but with only teams in the North East and South regions of USA, Eirball takes a brief look into the crystal ball, to see where not only the USFL shall go next, but also what will happen when the NFL goes Global.

After reviving old USFL 1 teams in the Midwest and West such as Chicago Blitz, Memphis Showboats, Oklahoma Outlaws, Portland Breakers, San Antonio Gunslingers, Los Angeles Express and Arizona Wranglers, as well as resurrecting the Orlando Renegades; the USFL becomes a Major League in the USA after the NFL goes global. With a large amount of fans unhappy with the NFL putting teams in Canada, Mexico, Japan and Germany, US fans of Football flock to the USA-only league which revived the popular United States Football League of 1983 to 1985, becoming the firsty successful Spring League.

By 2040 the NFL, under increasing pressure from protest groups in USA, not only moves teams with controversial names such as the Chiefs to Johannesburg, Patriots to Dublin, Ravens to London, Colts to Berlin, Bengals to Delhi, Rams to Sydney, Chargers to Tokyo, Vikings to Stockholm, Browns to Mexico City, Cowboys to Rio de Janeiro, Cardinals to Rome, and Bills to Toronto, but also scraps the AFC in favour of the new World Football Conference, which includes the Houston Texans, Jacksonville Jaguars and Tennessee Titans.

In 2060 the XFL begins its fifth iteration (after another failed attempt in 2040) by bringing back the old NFL teams which the NFL moved out of their markets – Houston Oilers, Dallas Cowboys, Baltimore Colts, Washington Redskins, Boston Patriots, Buffalo Bills, New York Titans, St. Louis Cardinals, Cincinnati Bengals, Cleveland Browns, Minnesota Vikings, Kansas City Chiefs, Los Angeles Rams, Oakland Raiders, San Diego Chargers and San Francisco 49ers are all resurrected in a new Xtreme Football Conference which merges with the United States Football League creating a USA-only 32-team league.

Meanwhile the CFL has added the Atlantic Schooners and the Japan X-League Super division teams drop their Company names and represent the 8 regions of Japan – Kanto Creators, Hokkaido Frontiers are just two of the eight regional teams in the new Japan Super League. The Liga de Futbol Americano and European League of Football also take their place among the 4 Major Regional Leagues along with the CFL and JSL.

Meanwhile Native Americans and other groups such as Hawaiians and Mississippi African-Americans who have had their identity stolen revive old team names in a new Independent Football League with ownership and players of that heritage. A Global League of Football featuring 4 teams in Asia, 2 in Africa and 2 in South America is also set up at the same time, with the two leagues merging as the International League of Football. Finally, to fill in a gap, the Pacific League of Football, with one team in New Zealand and three in Australia is launched.

[References: 1-2]

Playoffs (30 July 2022)

With homefield advantage Albany Empire squeezed by Jacksonville Sharks 68-67 in a high scoring encounter to advance to the NAL Championship Game where they were to meet Carolina Cobras who won 65-51 versus Columbus Lions in a similar high-scoring game at Greensboro, North Carolina.

NAL Championship (13 August 2022)

Albany Empire won the 2022 NAL Championship in blistering fashion, reeling off 41 unanswered points after Carolina Cobras took a 7-6 lead. Albany quarterback Sam Castronova fired six touchdown passes at the appropriately-named MVP Arena in New York State to make the Empire back-to-back NAL Champions. Even though Albany were 47-7 up after three quarters the never-say-die Cobras punched back with a Zack Brown Fumble Recovery in the Endzone and a 38-yard Adam Smith Touchdown catch but time ran out for the Cobras as the Empire prevailed 47-20 thanks to a 3-yard TD run by Castronova less than two minuters into the game; a catch from Aaron Wascha for a 13-7 Albany lead after a 3-yard Kendrick Ings TD pass; Aaron Wascha scored a second TD catch and another TD pass from Castronova as well as a 10-yard Darius Prince TD put Albany 34-7 ahead. Two more TD passes by Castronova for Albany put the game beyond doubt: to Marquel Wade a lineman Cornelius Lewis to give the Empire an unassailable 47-7 lead at the end of the third quarter. 2022 National Arena League Preview

After a reduced schedule of 8 games in 2021 due to Covid-19 concerns, the National Arena League has scheduled a full 14-week schedule with each team playing 12 games for 2022. Jersey Flight have left the league after finishing 2-6 in 2021 and have been replaced by San Antonio Gunslingers, giving the NAL a footprint in Texas. Albany Empire shall be defending the title they won in 2021 with a 7-1 record and two 2-Touchdown victories in the playoffs: 79-62 versus Columbus Lions in the Championship Game after a 55-41 defeat of Carolina Cobras in the Semi-Finals. With four of the six teams playing in the postseason playoffs, each team shall fancy their chances of making it beyond the regular season, with San Antonio and Jacksonville Sharks (2-6 in 2021) targetting the playoff places won by Orlando Predators (4-4 in 2021) and Carolina Cobras (3-5 in 2021). Columbus Lions (6-2 in 2021) and Albany Empire should be favourites to reach the playoffs again.

ABOUT THE NAL

The National Arena Football is a AAA (Third Level) American Football League based primarily in the Northeastern & Southern States of the USA. It is one of 2 AAA Arena Indoor Football Leagues in the USA, the other being the Indoor Football League (Midwest and West).

ABOUT ARENA / INDOOR FOOTBALL

Indoor (also known as Arena) Football plays an 8 v 8 version of American Football on a converted Ice Hockey Rink 50-yards long with 2 10 -yard endzones. Teams have 5 downs (attempts) to score or the ball is turned over – 3 of which must be passing plays. It is therefore a higher scoring game than standard 11 v 11 American Football. The main difference between Arena Football and Indoor Football is that there is no rebound net either side of the goalposts in Indoor Football. Arena Football rules allow the ball stay in play when it comas back off the rebound nets.

Week / Semana Recaps

Week / Semana 1 Recap

With three new teams debuting in the first LFA season since COVID shut down the 2020 season after five games, there was a lot of uncertainty in week 1 of the Liga de Futbol Americano in Mexico. Two of those new teams: Galgos Tijuana (Tijuana Greyhounds) and Gallos Negros (Black Cockerels) Queretaro met in Tijuana, with Gallos Negros coming out convincing winners, 33-9. The other expansion team, Reyes Jalisco (Jalisco Kings) were at home in Guadalajara to Raptors EdoMex, but came out on the losing side 10-13. The third match of the weekend saw the capital city side Mexicas CDMX lose 7-10 in Mexico City to Dinos Saltillo. Reference: [1]

Week / Semana 2 Recap

Dinos Saltillo moved to 2-0 with a 24-17 victory over Fundidores Nuevo Leon at Estadio Francisco I. Madero, in Fundidores first game of the 2022 season. Mexicas CDMX and Raptors EdoMex both stand on 1-1 after Mexicas close 10-8 victory at FES Acatlan in EdoMex. The third game of the weekend between Gallos Negros Queretaro and Reyes Jalisco was postponed until 17 April. [Reference: 1].

Week / Semana 3 Recap

Dinos Saltillo won their third game of the year 24-10 versus Gallos Negros Queretaro to go 3-0, two wins ahead of nearest rivals, Reyes Jalisco, Raptors EdoMex, Gallos Negros Queretaro, and Fundidores Nuevo Leon all of whom stand at 1-1. Fundidores defeated Mexicas CDMX 27-13 to gain their first victory, and leaving Mexicas at 1-2 in the process. Expansion franchise Galgos Tijuana fell to 0-2 after losing 0-10 to Reyes Jalisco. [References: 1-1b]

Week / Semana 4 Recap

Dinos Saltillo continued to be the team to beat in LFA 2022, going 4-0 with a 14-6 victory at Galgos Tijuana, who drop to 0-3. The biggest win of the week, however, belonged to Mexicas CDMX, who won 46-12 at Reyes Jalisco. The Mexicas improve to 2-2 at the Reyes drop to 1-2. A big game between Fundidores Nuevo Leon and Raptors Edomex, both 1-1 coming into the game, went 23-20 to Fundidores. [References: 1-1b]

Week / Semana 5 Recap

Dinos Saltillo went to 5-0 with a 34-6 defeat of Reyes Jalisco who fell to 1-3. Raptors EdoMex made a move for the playoffs with a 40-0 defeat of Galgos Tijuana who fell to 0-4 as the Raptors moved to 2-2. Fundidores Nuevo Leon looked assured of a playoff spot after defeating Gallos Negros Queretaro 13-10 to improve to 3-1. Gallos Negros drop to 1-2. [References: 1-1b]

Week / Semana 6 Recap

Raptors EdoMex inflicted the first defeat of the season on Dinos Saltillo, winning by 28-27 in the Jurassic Duel. The close win put Raptors in fourth place on 3-2 and left Dinos Saltillo still in first on 5-1. Mexicas CDMX were third after a 16-11 victory over Gallos Negros Queretaro. The victory left Mexicas CDMX on 3-2 like Raptors EdoMex, and pushed Gallos Negros back to 1-3 and needing a miracle to qualify for the playoffs. In the other match Fundidores Nuevo Leon defeated Galgos Tijuana to go 4-1 in second place and leaving Galgos still needing their first win on 0-5. [References: 1-1b]

Week / Semana 2 Rescheduled Recap

A rescheduled game over the Easter weekend saw Reyes Jalisco gain a second victory in their debut season with a 19-12 victory at Gallos Negros Queretaro. [References: 1-1b]

Week / Semana 7 Recap

Dinos Saltillo (5-1) were assured of the Regular Season title and a bye into the Semi-Finals after arch rival from Nuevo Leon, Fundidores Nuevo Leon, lost 35-24 at Reyes Jalisco (3-3) in a shock result. Fundidores (4-2) were still assured of second place and a bye into the Semi-Finals also. Joining Fundidores on 4-2 were Mexicas CDMX, the Capital City team winning 30-22 at expansion team Galgos Tijuana who finished 0-6 and out of the playoffs; and Raptors EdoMex, the team from Naucalpan in Mexico State (Estado de Mexico) where the Irish Institute School is based, who won 28-19 at Gallos Negros Queretaro, who also qualified for the Playoffs in sixth position. LFA Playoffs Preview

The First Round of Playoffs pits #3 Mexicas CDMX (4-2) at home to #6 Gallos Negros Queretaro (1-5) and #4 Raptors EdoMex (4-2) at home to #5 Reyes Jalisco (3-3). The first match looked like it should be a formality earlier in the season for Mexicas, who defeated the much improved Gallos Negros 16-11 in Week 6 at home in Estadio “Pallillo”, but with the three expansion teams improving each week it is no longer a certainty they shall win. Likewise Raptors EdoMex, who defeated Reyes Jalisco, another expansion team, 13-10 at Gualajara in Week 1, cannot count on victory in the second game, with Reyes Jalisco becoming the first expansion team to defeat a pre-covid team in the last week of the season when they shocked Fundidores 35-24. The winners shall meet either #1 Dinos Saltillo (5-1) or #2 Fundidores (4-2) in the Semi-Finals with the winners of those games meeting on 21 May in Estadio Caliente to decide Tazon Mexico V (Mexico Bowl V) Champions. [References: 1-1b]

Playoffs Round 1

Raptors EdoMex won through to another Semi-Final with a 26-6 defeat of Reyes Jalisco while Gallos Negros Queretaro continued to improve with a 14-7 win at Mexicas CDMX. [References: 1-1b]

Semi-Finals

Gallos Negros Queretaro reached the Tazon Mexico (Mexico Bowl) in the debut season, after a close 27-20 victory over Dinos Saltillo in the Semi-Finals. Fundidores Nuevo Leon won the right to play them in Tazon Mexico V with a 30-27 defeat of Raptors EdoMex. [References: 1-1b]

Tazon Mexico V (Mexico Bowl V)

Marcelo González opened the scoring for Fundidores Monterrey with an 11 yard run in the first quarter for a 6-0 lead (the Point After Touchdown was missed). Jason Smith recovered a fumble for a touchdown in the second quarter and with Alberto Gonzalez kicking the PAT Queretaro Black Roosters were leading 7-6 before the Smelters recovered the lead through a Field Goal to leave Monterrey 9-7 up at Halftime.

In the third quarter the Black Roosters’ Quarterback Marco Garcia sneaked into the endzone to make it 14-9 to Queretaro after another successful PAT. Monterrey again took the lead when Brandon Calzoncit ran in for a TD, but again the PAT was missed to leave Monterrey 15-14 up. Fundidores sealed the victory and their first ever Mexico Bowl with a Field Goal in the fourth quarter to leave the Final score Fundidores Monterrey 18 Gallos Negros Queretaro 14. [References: 2]

Preview

The 2022 Liga de Futbol Americano (Mexico) kicks off its sixth season. First played in 2016 between four teams (Condors CDMX, Eagles CDMX, Mayas CDMX and Raptors EdoMex) with all four teams playing in a single Arena in Mexico City (CDMX – Ciudad de Mexico) [6, 9], the league has grown to a 10 team league in 2022 with the addidion of Reyes Jalisco (Jalisco State Kings) in Guadalajara and Galgos Tijuana (Tijuana Greyhounds) from Estado Baja California (Baja California State) [1] .

All four original teams have since moved or changed name, with Mayas currently playing in Puebla State, Condors moving for 2022 to Queretaro, Eagles changing their name to Mexicas in 2017 and Raptors EdoMex (Estado de Mexico – Mexico State), moving to Naucalpan in Estado de Mexico, where the Irish Institute is based. Mayas CDMX won Mexico Bowl I in 2016 and in 2017 there was the addition of Dinos Saltillo and Fundidores Monterrey (Monterrey Smelters) in Nuevo Leon, in the North near Texas. That year the league was again won by the Mayas [2,3].

In 2018 the league was won by Mexicas CDMX, one of two teams named after Native Mexican inhabitants (the other is the Mayas) [4,5]. 2019 saw the addition of yet two more teams: Artilleros Puebla (Puebla Gunners) and Osos Toluca (Toluca Bears), bringing the total to 8 teams. Condors CDMX won the Mexico Bowl (Tazon Mexico) and the Raptors EdoMex were beaten finalists for the third time in four years (Dinos Saltillo lost the Mexico Bowl in 2017) [7, 8]. 2020 was a difficult year, with the start of the covid pandemic, and despite the addition of a ninth team, Pioneros Queretaro, the league remained at 8 for the season due to Mayas sitting out.

The 2020 league was cancelled after 5 of 8 regular season weeks due to the pandemic [10,11] and in 2021 the Artilleros dropped down to the Futbol Americano de Mexico (FAM) League with the Mayas returning. The 2021 season, however, was cancelled in its entirety [12, 13] and for the 2022 season, despite the addition of the Galgos Tijuana and Reyes Jalisco, there shall be only seven teams playing, as Pioneros Queretaro drop back down to the Futbol Americano de Mexico (FAM) league and Artilleros Puebla, Osos Toluca and Mayas take a years break.

The 2022 season shall start on March 5th and there shall be seven rounds with each team playing six regular season games. Teams ranked 1 and 2 shall receive a bye to the Semi-Finals and the 3rd to 6th placed teams play in the Quarter-Finals, which begin on April 30th. Only one team shall not make the Playoffs with the Tazon Mexico V (Mexico Bowl V) being scheduled for May 15th. It remains to be seen whether the LFA shall play at all in 2022 having cancelled the last year and a half and with three teams sitting out the year [1].

Prague Panthers vs Prague Lions

Regular Season Schedule

Recap

The first Czech American Football Association (CAAF) season was in 1994, not long after independence from the Soviets. Four teams entered: Prague Panthers, Brno Alligators, Prague Lions and Ostrava Cobras. Prague Panthers finished the season 6-0 claiming the CAAF Championship with an astounding 145-9 triumph over Prague Lions in the first Czech Bowl.

The Prague Panthers are the oldest team in the Czech Republic and had previously played in the Austrian Football League before becoming founding members of the ČAAF Česká asociace amerického fotbalu. They got better as the season progressed, winning by bigger and bigger margins as the weeks went by. Brno Alligators and Prague Lions tied for second place on 3-3 records, and it is not known if a Semi-Final was played before the Prague Lions defeat in the Czech Bowl. Ostrava Cobras finished last on 0-6 and were replaced for the 1995 season by a new Ostrava team, the Ostrava Eagles for 1995. All three of the other teams continued to play in 1995.
